The New York City schools boss has suspended release of mass communications sent to educators, students and parents without her approval — sparked by a furor over a recent Department of Education newsletter claiming Israel is committing “genocide in Gaza.”

The Post first reported Wednesday on the antisemitic message that was included in a 14-page “Teacher Career Pathways” spring 2025 newsletter — sent out to “master teachers” across the system’s 1,800 schools.

Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos said newsletters and other mass communications cannot be released without first being reviewed by her office, amid consultation with Mayor Eric Adams’ office.

“It is egregious and deeply disappointing that despite our efforts to streamline communication protocols in this massive system, politically one-sided materials that are deeply offensive to the Jewish community were once again shared with educators,” Aviles-Ramos said in a statement Thursday.

“I profusely apologize for this. Moving forward, all system-wide communication will be directly signed off by my office until we can further build team capacity to reflect our core values and the highest commitment to curating materials that ONLY reflect political neutrality.”

Adams — who is considering running for re-election under an independent “EndAntiSemitism” ballot line -— was furious after hearing of the Israel-bashing message sent out by his education department.

“Let me be clear: Schools are where our children should feel safest, which is why neither antisemitism, nor any other form of hate, has any place in New York City Public Schools,” the mayor told The Post.

“As the home of the largest Jewish community in the world outside of Israel, we must ensure our Jewish students, families, and educators feel welcomed, not targeted. Today, our city’s public school system is taking direct and sweeping action to ensure that no politically one-sided rhetoric ever appears again in any official communication sent from our schools.”

Meanwhile, a DOE directive sent to educators Thursday was even more explicit.

“Effective immediately, please pause all newsletters and mass communications from your teams and divisions until further notice,” the memo sent by a DOE supervisor obtained by The Post said.

“This applies to any staff-facing, family-facing, or citywide messages, regardless of audience or platforms,” the memo sent to educators said

Earlier this month, Aviles-Ramos was also forced to apologize for a different newsletter that linked to a “Stop Gaza Genocide Toolkit” — sparking outrage in the Jewish community.

That 17-page document contained radicalized messaging that encourages readers to “Stop arming Israel and free Palestine!”

Meanwhile, an anti-Israel group last week sent an email blast to hundreds of city teachers pushing for a May Day strike and other “civil disobedience” to protest the Gaza war.

The Labor for Palestine Network called for union members to rise up against “the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza” and even coordinate their efforts with student groups, which teachers were told to ignore by city school officials.

Jewish educators applauded the action from the chancellor and City Hall.

“We thank the chancellor for recognizing that certain mass email communications and distributed resources have reflected historical inaccuracy and bias, undermining the Department of Education’s core commitment to political neutrality,” said Karen Feldman, co-founder of the New York City Public School Alliance.”

“We welcome her efforts to build a team that truly reflects and upholds these values. However, we must emphasize that this is not an isolated incident—what we are facing is a systemic problem that demands comprehensive and sustained attention.”

St. Martin's Press Boycott

From the Readers for Accountability Toolkit:

The boycott of St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books, and other related imprints is a direct response to the publisher’s lack of accountability regarding a) statements made by an employee in their marketing department and b) their failure to respond to concerns about possible systemic issues within the department.  

This employee, who we will not name, posted Islamophobic, queerphobic, and anti-Palestinian content on their personal (but public) social media. This included pinkwashing and use of the term “pallywood” which is used to imply that videos of Palestinians being murdered or brutalized by Israeli soldiers are fakes.  

This content was shared in Instagram stories and was brought to our attention by Palestinian activist and content creator @vivafalastinleen.  

Leen noted that while she is on the St. Martin's Press influencer list, she never seemed to receive any of the ARCs she requested. Other Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian creators had previously noted the same thing. 

Leen further noticed that her white counterparts, with a comparable or smaller following, would receive these ARCS regularly and without issue. She began to question if this was a symptom of the employee's bigotry or perhaps a systemic issue within the marketing department at this publisher when she was made aware of the posts shared by this employee.  

Leen attempted to reach out to St. Martin's Press when the employee's posts came to light, but struggled to receive a response and was largely ignored. Other influencers and content creators reached out as well with similar results. However, Leen did eventually receive an email from Brant Janeway. 

The response, however, was dismissive and defensive with no action being taken to investigate. 

The boycott was officially enacted after ten days of radio silence from St. Martin's Press and Wednesday books. During those ten days, content creators were emailing, DMing, commenting, and making videos to demand that St. Martin's Press make a statement to no avail. 

As such, Leen created a video that provided other creators with context for the boycott. This video also included a large number of screenshots and significant context explaining why those screenshots are so dangerous. Twitter likes were also included to provide evidence of how deep the employee's bigotry runs. 

R4A have since then assisted in bringing attention to this issue by providing education and resources for the boycott. This includes a petition outlining our demands and urging St. Martin’s Press to hold their staff accountable to the MacMillan Code of Conduct.

While St. Martin’s Press has largely remained silent despite resuming posting like normal on their socials, they did take the time to unfollow two prominent BIPOC creators within the community including @satrayreads and @vivafalastinleen.  

An email was sent from R4A to St. Martin’s Press on 12/14/23 outlining our concerns and issues with St. Martin’s Press and a response was received on 12/15/23. This response failed to meet the demands of the boycott and was heavily focused on equitable ARC distribution. As such, the boycott continues and further updates will be shared as the situation develops.

This boycott means that while you can buy and read books published by St. Martin's Press and its imprints, you should not platform this. This means not marking them as 'read' or 'reading' on Goodreads, not reviewing them, and not posting them on social media. Yes, even Tumblr. Participation:

Participating in the St. Martin's Press boycott can be as simple as no longer promoting books from St. Martin's Press or related imprints on your social media, websites, and review spaces. Additionally, we are asking that participants avoid promoting these books in any way during this time. This includes master lists, reading recaps, and other similar posts. However, readers can still purchase and read these books in order to reduce harm done to the authors.

Learn how to move your videos over to 3CMedia or Canvas Studio. If you need help with captioning, linking, or adding quiz questions to your videos, we can do that, too!

📩Contact Students with both their non-SDCCD student emails & their SDCCD student emails. You can paste copies of any pre-semester communications to your students in Canvas as an announcement or page in a module.

IMPORTANT: Starting this fall, everyone will use their SDCCD Email login/password to log into MySDCCD/Peoplesoft.

Canvas Course Shells:  Build your courses offline & in your Development/Sandbox so it’s easier to restore if Campus Solutions deletes your “real” shells. Any change in instructor, time, a typo, etc. can trigger Campus Solutions to delete that shell without warning. Cara’s Tutorial, Copying Canvas Course into a Development Shell (4:16) or Text version

🆕 Need a Basic Course Template for City College: I created one for our campus in Canvas Commons. You can use this link in Canvas or put my name “Aileen Gum” in the Canvas Commons Search Bar.

Have the LRC scan the beginning 20% of your text to post in your Canvas course: This helps students get started if they have a delay in getting their books or financial aid.

Consider a Liquid Syllabus  so students can get ready before class starts or see how amazing your class will be before they register! *You can release/suppress Google pages to control what people see pre-enrollment vs enrolled. Create/Hide/Delete Pages in a Google Site less (6 Min)

Don’t just put it in your syllabus… Use an Orientation Module: This makes it easier for students to find important policies when they are panicking & need something specific (so they don’t keep emailing you every second, “Did you get my email?), grades/response times, support resources, etc.
