Fire Evacuation Plan - why you need one?

One of the key requirements for all buildings, Class 2 and above, is that a written Fire and Evacuation Plan must be in place.  Your plan will provide information you need to know, allowing you to escape a building should an emergency occur, it is essential that it is developed for your building exclusively.

I regularly observe incorrect and/or incomplete fire evacuation plans. The plans are created the same, whether the building is two stories with limited fire systems in place, or twelve with commercial tenancies, fire panels, evacuation warning systems, sprinkler systems etc., they are usually missing approval documents and alternative solutions.

If your plan does not include at the very minimum, the below, speak with the provider of the plan and insist it is updated.

BFSR Division 2 - Fire and evacuation plans

The occupier of the building must ensure the fire and evacuation plan for the building is:

 Kept in a written form; and

 States all required information; and

 contact details; and 

 Fire safety management procedure; and

 Training arrangements; and

 Emergency response exercises; and

 Includes evacuation diagrams; and

 Relevant approval documents

 A  list of fire safety installations within the building.
