hey, i find your posts about historical fiction pretty interesting, do you have any recs?

anon this is the most beautiful and validating ask i have ever received. absolutely of COURSE I have recs. not gonna be a lot of deep cuts on this list but i love all of these books and occasionally books do receive awards and acclaim because they are good. in no particular order:

the cromwell trilogy by hilary mantel. of course i gotta start with the og. it’s 40 million pages on the tudor court and the english reformation and it will fundamentally change you as a person and a reader

(sub rec: the giant, o’brien by hilary mantel. in many ways a much shorter thematic companion to the cromwell trilogy imo. about stories and death and embodiment and the historical record and 18th century ireland. if you loved the trilogy, read this to experience hils playing with her own theories about historical fiction. if you are intimidated by the trilogy, read this first to get a taste of her prose style and her approach to the genre. either way please read all four novels ok thanks)

lincoln in the bardo by george saunders. the book that got me back into historical fiction as an adult. american history as narrated by a bunch of weird ghosts and abraham lincoln. chaotic and lovely and morbid.

the everlasting by katy simpson smith. rome through the ages as seen by a medici princess, a gay death-obsessed monk, and an early christian martyr. really historically grounded writing about religion and power, and also narrated with interjections from god’s ex boyfriend satan. smith is a trained historian and her prose slaps

(sub rec: free men by katy simpson smith. only a sub rec bc i read it a long time ago and my memory of it is imperfect but i loved it in 2017ish. about three men in the woods in the post revolutionary american south and by virtue of being about masculinity is actually about women. smith did her phd in antebellum southern femininity and motherhood iirc so this book is LOCKED IN to those perspectives)

a mercy by toni morrison. explores the dissolution of a household in 17th century new york. very different place and time than a lot of morrison’s bigger novels but just as mean and beautiful

(sub rec: beloved by toni morrison. a sub rec bc im pretty sure everyone has already read beloved but perhaps consider reading it again? histfic ghost story abt how the past is always here and will never go away and loves you and hates you and is trying to kill you)

an artist of the floating world by kazuo ishiguro. my bestie sir kazuo likes to explore the past through characters who, for one reason or another (amnesia, dementia, being a little baby robot who was just born yesterday, etc), are unable to fully comprehend their surroundings. this one is about post-wwii japan as understood by an elderly supporter of the imperial regime

(sub rec: remains of the day by kazuo ishiguro. same conceit as above except this time the elderly collaborator is incapable of reckoning with the slow collapse of the system that sheltered him due to britishness.)

the pull of the stars by emma donoghue. donoghue is a strong researcher and all of her novels are super grounded in their place and time without getting so caught up in it they turn into textbooks. i picked this one bc it is a wwi lesbian love story about childbirth that made me cry so hard i almost threw up on a plane but i recommend all her histfic published after 2010. before that she was still finding her stride.

days without end by sebastian barry. this one is hard to read and to rec bc it is about the us army’s policy of genocide against native americans in the 19th century west as told by an irish cavalry soldier. it is grim and violent and miserable and also so beautiful it makes me cry about every three pages. first time i read it i was genuinely inconsolable for two days afterwards.

I love Melissa with all my heart, she's my favorite background character ever. However (to me personally, don't come at me with the black dagger), I don't count "Hey Melissa!" canon in my personal universe. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a murderous woman with a blazer, but I don't like the idea of Melissa being a murderer in EVERY universe 😭 breaks my heart. SO. HERE ARE ALL OF MY MELISSA HEADCANONS!

- She used to be friends with Sam, but after seeing how he treats Charlotte, she despises him

- Call me crazy for this, but I can see her and Mr. Davidson having a father daughter relationship. It's the same with Bill and Mel, but it's more commonly seen with Mr. Davidson

- She used to have a crush on Paul (much like in canon), but when she learned that he loved Emma, she eventually lost feelings, and now they're all friends

- Melissa, Emma, Charlotte, Piper (OC), Alexa (OC),Harper (OC), and Sawyer (OC) are all a girl group because it's funny to me and my bestie

- She doesn't have a strong opinion on coffee, but she normally has a lot of milk in it

- While she isn't BIG on musicals, one of her favorites is RENT

- Melissa is pretty expressive, like if you tell her the most out of pocket shit you can tell she's shocked

- She loves talking to her cat, Cassie, as if she were an actual person. She does this with all of Charlotte's cats too (Charlotte has cats. If you disagree, fight me [I'm kidding please don't.])

- She has a lot of videos saved on her phone, and most of them is just chaos happening around the office

- While we don't see her on screen long enough to see how she got infected in TGWDLM, I do have an idea: She was originally going to escape with Charlotte, Bill, and Ted, but she was found by Mr. Davidson before she could get away

- Shocked I haven't mentioned this one, but she has an upsidedown heart shaped birthmark on her thigh

- Melissa is 100% ambidextrous, and I refuse to think otherwise

PROLOGUE

For 21 questions | Matthew Sturniolo

Lily is portrayed as Hailee Steinfeld, Alex as Emma Chamberlain and ofc the boys as themselves

Lily was just getting comfortable, as she put her pyjamas on and got on the couch to watch a movie since she would be waiting quite some time for her friend Alex to come home.

Two hours and a half had passed until Lily suddenly heard Alex bursting into the home and screaming:

“OH MY GOD, FINALLY HOME!!”

“Heyy bestie, how were the last hours at the café?”, asked Lily.

“Very looooong when you’re on your own”, replied Alex as she was removing her shoes.

“What do you mean on your own? Lucas and Jade were with you”, rationalised the brunette.

“Yeah yeah they were here of course", agreed Alex, "but after you left at four, Jade had to leave barely an hour after you 'cause she had an appointment, so it was just me, Lucas and the clients.” The exhaustion could be heard in her voice as she said the last word.

“Oh you’re dramatic, it wasn't even that crowded today’’, laughed Lily.

“Yeah but still Lily I'm so exhausted”, Alex answered, just glad to be home.

“Go relax a bit?”, she suggested to her friend.

“Yeah I was going to do that but before that I need to find our boy so I can hug him”.

“He’s in my room sleeping”, Lily informed

Alex quite literally ran to Lily’s room, finding the cat on the bed.

“MONSIEUR MOUSTACHE I'VE MISSED YOUUU”, Alex yelled with relief to finally see her beloved cat again - she had literally seen him earlier this morning.

“His name is still Bernard in case you forgot” Lily rolled her eyes while joining Alex upstairs.

As Alex and Lily started hugging their cat, Bernard just wanted to flee and find a calm part of the house. A frown appeared on both of the girls' faces when the cat just decided to run from them and Alex took this as a sign to just go shower until Bernard was ready for human presence again.

While Alex was showering, Lily went back downstairs to make dinner for her and her best friend - Tuesday was pasta day. When Alex joined her friend in the kitchen, they started eating in silence until Alex got an idea:

"Girl, I saw a video on youtube today where people just text strangers to play games or like the neighbour number thing you know? I kinda wanna do that".

"Oh yeah why not, could be fun", replied Lily as she was interested in that idea. "Here, just put whatever and I'll text the person who has that number".

As Alex gave Lily's phone back to her after writing "whatever" as her friend said, Lily just started typing and asked about the first game that came to her mind.

~Timeskip~

Another sigh left Lily's mouth as she was ignored once again. For the past hour, she had been texting strangers – whose numbers were randomly given to her by her best friend Alex - and asked them to play 21 questions with her. For now, four people had left her on read and the only one who had replied had just said "Wrong number, don't bother me again." – rude much? Alex rubbed her friend's shoulder for comfort and gave her another number to which Lily groaned:

"If this one isn't successful within 5 minutes, I'll just go to bed and give up".

"Alright, well if you don't mind I'll go now ‘cause I don't want to see you even more frustrated than you are now", Alex laughed at the other girl.

As Alex went to her room, Lily sent the last message of the day and was already prepared to go to sleep in a couple of minutes.

After thirty seconds, Lily realised that she was definitely not motivated enough to wait five minutes and immediately left the living room after seeing that her text had been delivered. As she entered her room, she threw her phone on the bed and went to the bathroom to brush her teeth as well as her hair.

When she came back, she was ready to turn off her phone for the rest of the night but was surprised to see that she had a message – maybe it was Alex sending her tiktoks with the usual message being "us<3" or "that's so you girl". However, as she unlocked her phone, she discovered it wasn't from her best friend but from the last person she had texted

“I was asked not to give a speech today,” William gestured casually to Emma as she pressed her hands to her face, red with embarrassment. “But, I never listen,” he took a swing of the expensive champagne he had browbeat her into supplying- it’s your wedding you hussy, you need to serve the good stuff- before becoming utterly serious, his voice bellowing now from the podium he had commandeered from Belle, her golden dress shimmering as if in mild exasperation, as she stood to the left of the low stage. 

“Dearly beloved,” he started and Killian sputtered into his glass, “we have come together on this day, to drink free booze, and to celebrate a miracle.” 

His audience tittered, laughter tinkling like the light clinking of crystal which preceded William’s overthrowing of the stage moments before as Emma hid behind her hands.

“I met Emma Swan,” he paused for dramatic effect, “sorry, sorry, I forgot why we’re all here,” he held his free hand up in placation, “Emma Jones,” they tittered again, “long before she met Killian.” 

“Oh no,” Emma whispered, turning her face to rest her chin on her new husband’s shoulder.

i gotta confess i've been working on a lot of twiyor recently but i'm still trying to figure out their dynamic tbh because they're a lot--for lack of a better word--healthier than royai, LMAO. there are some similarities but overall i think they're less codependent with a far superior chance of a happy ending AHAHAHA. that said i haven't forgotten about the college au and am hoping to get back to it when work slows down :) anyway i blame @nightofnyx8 entirely for my new sxf/twiyor hyperfixation... we're so normal about this... totally!

i also have been trying to compile some of my poetry into an anthology--my tentative title is womanhood, love, and the cooks, but we'll see how it all goes!! (imposter syndrome do be rough)

other than that i've mostly just been besieged by work tbh :( it was going fine until this case exploded in my face and now i'm gonna have to go on a business trip overseas next month to interview some witnesses, which is exciting (my first!) but also terribly nerve-wrecking... ANYHOW fingers crossed i cannot wait for Christmas ehehehe hopefully i get to squeeze in another holiday eoy :)

I also like how this season Chef actually is the one explaining each character’s possible reasons for getting eliminated. Chris and Chef share the work a lot better now and tahts good.

1. Beauty and the Beast: honestly, probably where part of my affinity for fictional aggressive, dark-haired men came from.

2. Ever After - definitely a formative piece for my love of historical romances!

3. Phantom of the Opera - DEFINITELY where my love for fictional, aggressive, dark haired men comes from +musical genius #sexual awakening

4. Pride and Prejudice - another historical romance classic. Also, THAT HAND YOU KNOW THE ONE.

5. Emma (2020)- newer, lovely score, lovely actors, plus there is a scene where Mr. Knightly just LAYS ON THE FLOOR, longing for his love

6. The Two Towers- Helm’s Deep. That’s it. That’s the reason.

Bonus gif because it’s also part of sexual awakening… maybe collectively.

7. Wolfwalkers - I have loved all the movies from this studio, but this ONE lives rent free. It’s honestly why three of my fics have WOLVES in them, ngl. It’s so good.

8. Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe- my first fantasy love as a child. I also love the friendship between CS Lewis and Tolkien, just two besties getting drunk to talk theology and fantasy world building.

9. Les Miserables- Can’t go wrong with the musical or the movie… Hugh Jackman or Liam Neeson. A great example of the power of redemption. Also the MUSIC.

10. Immortal Beloved - lots of Beethoven and boobs. That’s pretty much the whole film.
