Real talk- imposter syndrome
So I’ve been planning on making a post on this but I've been holding off. Wanted to make this one as real as possible and thought that the best time to make it was when I am knee-deep.
So if you don’t know what imposter syndrome is it’s basically when you feel you don’t belong. Even more than that, you feel like you’re a fraud. Some of the best, well renowned, and accomplished people feel this. It affects both men and women but is found more prominently in women especially when in a male-dominated field. So here’s my experience with it.
So I am currently a university second year, female, going for an engineering degree and just applied for a math minor. In case you don’t remember, engineering is a majorly male-dominated field right now and it reflects in my classes both with students and professors I’ve had. Our program is small so it’s obviously a small sample size but in a class where all of us have the same timeslot I counted around 8 girls in a room of about 40 people, and that doesn’t account for the people that don’t show up to class.
Right now our classes are largely programming and as someone who's never done anything like that before, the idea of this was terrifying. I’m not joking when I say the first week of our engineering101 class the Ai (assistant instructor) said “open the terminal” and I had no idea what he was talking about. I looked around the rest of the class and most/all of them had prior experience with programming. Some of them had been programming since twelve and if that couldn’t lead to imposter syndrome then I don’t know what could. Even now, despite going through an entire C programming course, learning from the ground up, I still feel like a fraud when doing homework because I work with someone on the assignments and we both lean on each other to talk through the problems.
It’s been two weeks into the new semester and already I’ve had a few hard hits. My co-worker asked me if I thought I would stay in the engineering program, not meaning anything by it just saying that a lot of people drop the major, and I didn’t feel that I could confidently say yes. I don’t plan on dropping the major, in fact, I love it, I’m planning to get my master’s in this program. But that doesn’t change that fact that I’m constantly feeling inferior, new material I don’t understand, a class quiz with a question I don’t quite understand.
They’re small matters but it doesn’t stop me feeling like I don’t belong.
This is very disorganized but the point still stands.
If you have more to share feel free to add! Happy to clarify anything in the post or just have a chat.
All the best,
-E

Shinko Crane is an internationally-recognized crane parts supplier which provides wholesale and retail crane parts within the Asia Pacific region and across the world. What’s good that we came across this shop is because they have Tadano crane parts which is what we need to continue our operations.
