Mosquito State
Tumblr media
Late-stage capitalism is probably driving us all mad, so it shouldn’t be surprising that someone made a psychological horror film about just that. In Filip Jan Rumsza’s debut feature, MOSQUITO STATE (2020, Shudder), Wall Street data analyst Beau Knapp’s mental breakdown in the face of the volatile markets of 2007 is mirrored by his sterile penthouse apartment’s invasion by a swarm of mosquitos. He’s so cut off from other people he initially welcomes the little bloodsuckers, even though the welts they raise on his body make it almost impossible for him to walk after a while. The film is a visual poem, an ode to decrepitude with gorgeous cinematography by Eric Koretz. At times Knapp’s performance seems more conceptual than human. His early scenes almost feel like somebody playing a Jerry Lewis comedy in slow motion. But as his mind and body fall apart, he commits himself totally to the role and creates something very sad, a portrait of a human soul in an inhumane world. Rymsza and co-writer Mario Zemono surround him with a bunch of overgrown jocks, co-workers who view the economy as just another varsity game, so Knapp is bound to come off more sympathetic. It’s a wonder he hasn’t broken down long before this, and his home environment at the start is already a rejection of the world he has to live in. Olivier Martinez plays his boss and does a good job of capturing the kind of manager who treats his employees like sons as long as they keep the wheels turning.

a short clip from a new trailer for our film SIBERIA. The full “DP CUT” Trailer link is in my profile (http://erickoretz.com/portfolio/items/siberia/) The original “official” trailer used their own terrible color grade for reasons unknown. If you’ve watched that one, please wash your eyes out and go to the new link in my bio and behold Keanu in full technicolor.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #224: Frank & Lola (2016) - dir. Matthew Ross
Contrary to popular belief, Frank & Lola does not provide Michael Shannon the game-changing “romantic leading man” vehicle that we (speaking for the devoted fans) were promised. In this indie drama, Shannon plays Frank, a Las Vegas-based chef whose blossoming relationship with a much younger woman named Lola (Imogen Poots) is almost immediately threatened by the discovery that Lola has been unfaithful and, later on, by the knowledge that Lola has a complicated past involving a middle-aged, married writer named Alan Larsson (Michael Nyqvist), who lives in Paris. Naturally, fate intervenes to send Frank to Paris on a job offer, so guess who he decides to pay a visit?
The casting of Michael Shannon would indeed seem surprising and unexpected if it weren’t for Frank’s tendencies toward violence. Hasn’t Shannon made a career out of playing various shades of psychologically unstable? And it's not like writer/director Matthew Ross needed to tell me that Michael Shannon was attractive enough to play this particular part. That much was obvious in last year’s Loving, in which Shannon’s character was first seen striding over a grassy hill, a pair of horn-rimmed glasses framing his face and his wavy rust-colored hair fluttering in the wind. What an image! Anyway, when Michael Shannon is cast as the romantic lead in a comedy where he gets to be gentle and quirky and maybe a little bit goofy, then we’ll actually have something to discuss.
It’s a real detriment to Frank & Lola that there just isn’t any chemistry between Shannon and Imogen Poots, being that this is one narrative that cannot function without genuine sparks between its complicated lovers. The intensity of Lola’s deception/secrets/flaws/pain is intriguing, but the fact that Frank is so easily (and viciously) provoked by Lola merely makes Michael Shannon come off as bitter and angry in his performance, a characterization lacking in layers. You could blame the age difference between the actors, or perhaps it’s the writing that keeps the characters at a permanently disadvantageous distance; it might even be the frustrating cameo by Rosanna Arquette as Lola’s mother, a wild-card character who could have breathed some life into the movie but was instead left behind in the first act; whatever the issue, the film fails to satisfy the viewer. Some arty cinematography by Eric Koretz gives the film an impressive glow, but otherwise Frank & Lola is an inessential motion picture.

MOSQUITO STATE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Shudder
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: August 2007. Isolated in his austere penthouse overlooking Central Park, obsessive Wall Street data analyst Richard Boca sees ominous patterns through his computer models that are behaving erratically. On Wall Street, they’re called “quants”—the intense data analysts whose mathematical prowess can make the difference between a fortune and a flop. Consumed with his work, Richard doesn’t often stray from his office or apartment. Richard decides to attend a company function where he makes two acquaintances: the mysterious, sylphlike Lena and one pesky mosquito, both of which take root in his mind. The mosquito spawns swarms of mosquitoes breeding in his apartment, an infestation that fosters his psychological meltdown.
REVIEW: Filip Jan Rymsza presents a tale of the unraveling of a stressed mind and how it attempts to validate patterns and connections in his logarithms and the parasite that he allows to overtake his vast apartment. It is part “Willard,” 1973’s “Bug” and part “American Psycho.”
The plot is a captivating tale of a brilliant introvert who begins to crack under the pressures of his job and his isolation. The mosquito acts as a catalyst that begins the process of his demise, or possibly his salvation. The bites have a physical effect and Richard begins to exhibit these growths/welts on his face that deform his looks. While others around him notice, he is blind to his transformation. His mousey disposition becomes more aggressive, yet his co-workers never see him as a threat. Rymsza crafts several interesting monologues, as well as some powerful dialogue between Richard and his boss, and Lena. It’s compelling how Rymsza lays out the plot in relation to the life cycle of the mosquito. As the swarm grows it seems that Richard is having an effect on them as well. It's an engaging plot that draws the viewer in and secures the viewer's interest to see how he resolves the tale.
Filip Jan Rymsza does an excellent job of capturing the period while instilling minimalistic production designs with art pieces that hint at the relationship between certain characters as the colors pop and add a subliminal emotional intensity. The filmmakers great amazing sets that feel like what could be a contemporary castle, with a Dracula like feel. Th film captures some amazing shots of the mosquito and its lifecycle that look like somethin from a nature shot against the backdrop of the apartment. The visual effects for the swarm feel organic and natural as they become a more sentient entity. It's very compelling how the interplay between light and shadow give way to splashes of color that ultimately give way to this bloody hue as the swarm roosts on the apartment’s massive windows. All that is supported by an excellent score by composer Cezary Skubiszewski that creates another level to the mood and atmosphere. Overall, impressive production designs and visuals that are absolutely awards nomination worthy.
MOSQUITO STATE rests on the shoulders of actor Beau Knapp. He creates this complex character that goes from an introverted computer genius, who feels like he is on the spectrum, to this creepy, menacing psychotic that has this Reinfiled aspect to the performance. It’s interesting how he maintains an aspect of innocence and a level of sympathy. He brings this element of a fairy tale to the character as the tale progresses in the relationship between his boss and Lena. It’s an amazing and powerful performance. The rest of the cast present as obstacles to be overcome or conquered. Charlotte Vega plays Lena. It is a genuine performance that also possesses a bit of mystery to it. She has an inner strength, but also there is a bot of the enchanted princes to it. SHe comes across as in need of an awakening more than rescuing. It’s an excellent ensemble cast that draws the viewer in for the ride.
MOSQUITO STATE is a complex film that has numerous visionary aspects that make for a haunting viewing experience. It does offer a bit of an allegory, but it truly is a fascinating thought provoking story. There is so much talent behind and in front of the camera that, again, I would be shocked if it didn’t receive a few award nominations. Filmmaker Filip Jan Rymsza is a master storyteller whose forthcoming projects I will absolutely be on the lookout for. This, as well as several other upcoming releases, make the Shudder subscription fee well worth it.

540 Local Elected Officials From All 50 States Urge Prez Trump to Import More Refugees to U.S.
Joe Biden has promised to make this happen, including taking in foreigners from terrorist hotspots around the world. In fact, Joe Biden was one of the original architects of the fraud-ridden refugee program that has destroyed neighborhoods across the U.S.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by Ann Corcoran
I told you here that the refugee industry was working on a letter to the President urging him to get the refugee flow into America moving again.
Yesterday they sent the letter with 540 signatories.
Says Amnesty International:
By signing this letter, these elected officials have joined together to voice their commitment to welcoming refugees in their communities and reviving the United States’ legacy as a leader in refugee resettlement.
I notice something missing from the letter. It avoids giving the President a number, but the industry has made it very clear!
They want 95,000 refugees to begin arriving on October first.
The President could make a decision this month on how many refugees might be invited to live in the US in FY2021. He could also legally set the ceiling at zero.
All of my posts on the topic are tagged FY2021.
Here are the signatories from yesterday.  The list is handy for identifying those local elected officials who are changing America by changing the people.
I don’t know why the organizers think that these open borders advocates will hold any sway with the President, but they sure make it handy for you to identify the other side where you live. Target them for retirement when they come up for re-election!
(For a little additional fun, see last year’s list here.)
They say the list is bipartisan, but there is no indication of party affiliation.  You will need to look through those listed in your state to see if Republicans are among those looking to import more poverty to your city.

California Voters:  Vote YES on Proposition 10--Fairness to Renters paying in excess of 30% of their income on rent.
Make it clear to greedy developers and unscrupulous landlords that the rent is too damn high!  We’re counting on grassroots supporters to step up and vote for Proposition 10 on November 6. Your vote and your voice COUNT! Give the right of city self-determination back to each city government = local control.  People on fixed incomes like retirees, veterans, and others require reasonable rents.  Median home values have increased by 80% since 2011.   More than half the renters in the state of California spend MORE than 30% of their income on rent (Haas Institute for Fair & Inclusive Society, UC Berkeley).

Vote for fairness, or do not be surprised at budding chaos.
