– Contagious Computer Virus in Chicago

OVERVIEW:

Home desktop computers have become increasingly common in the past two to three years in no-maj households all across America and, with that increased popularity, personal computer viruses have also become more common, including in the homes of no-maj born and half-blood wix. Recently, a new computer virus has attacked the personal home computers of a number of families across Chicago, causing the computers to overheat, run slowly, and occasionally shut down unexpectedly. However, the virus only became of concern to MACUSA when it was discovered that those who reported the virus all, within a week of their computers acting up, fell ill with an unexplainable sickness. The sickness itself has symptoms such as a prolonged high fever, slowed cognitive response, and infrequent but repeated petit mal seizures. 

Local aurors were originally contacted by the sister of one of the virus’ victims, Avani Wills; they determined that all of the reported viruses seem to have been caused by malware found on disks advertising free trials of a new online chat program called InstantChat, but no record has been found of the company responsible for producing these CD-ROMs, nor does the alleged “InstantChat” seem to exist. Four different wixen families with no-maj personal computers have been affected by the virus in the past month and a half and while no one has died yet, the virus seems to slowly be getting worse in those affected. 

PERSONS OF INTEREST:

Avani Wills: A half-blood witch who first contacted local aurors, Avani’s brother Erick is the most recent of the known victims of the virus, and his condition is the most severe. He is currently being kept for observation and treatment at Calderon Memorial, and Avani refuses to leave his side. 

Esa Burke (cw: memory loss): The first known victim of the virus, the twenty-nine year old pureblood wix has been sick for six weeks, and though the repeated seizures have started to case massive memory loss, their no-maj partner Alice has offered their computer and all other belongings up to be tested in the hopes of finding a cure.

Remy Patterson: Local aurors have traced each of the InstantChat disks back to Patterson, a no-maj employee at the nearby Computer City. Patterson claims the disks were in a bin of other free trial CD-ROMs, from which company policy demands they pass out one at random with every qualified purchase of $50 or more.
