He got involved in gang life by joining the Crips at a young age. He attended Alexander Hamilton High School which he dropped out before graduating.

Determined to change his life, he started to focus on his music career. He adopted the name “Nipsey Hussle” from comedian Julius “Nipsey” Russell. He released his first mixtape called A Slauson Boy. He released other mixtapes such as Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 1, Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 2, and Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 3. According to Rosaland, Shaketta was on the ground for a long time before anyone called police.

“She died alone,” Rosaland said.

“They left her for dead … that hurt me so bad, because I’m her protector, and I couldn’t protect her.”

Shaketta was 16 when she had her daughter, who is 14 years old.

Robin Strange, Shaketta’s mom, said the two were like sisters.

They loved to get food together and get their hair done, Shaketta’s sister, Kaleesha, said.

Shaketta wore her long, natural hair in twists, and would take her daughter to get hers braided.

“That was their thing,” Kaleesha said.

“Her baby came first.”

Shaketta’s family said she loved to eat and cook for others and had dreams of owning her own food truck.

Among her favorites were ribeye steak, lobster, chicken and dumplings, and barbecue.

“To be so small, she loved to eat,” Kaleesha said. Shaketta was about 5 feet, 4 inches.

Rosaland loved Shaketta’s homemade, fruit-infused drinks.

The last one she made is in Rosaland’s fridge, sealed in a jar.

Shaketta had many nicknames.

To her grandmother, she was “Poopie.”

To her stepgrandfather, she was “Mommy, because she was so bossy,” Robin said. Rosaland called her

“Nay.” Robin calls her “my baby.”

Rosaland’s husband called her “Slow Motion,” because she was known for talking and moving slowly. Many knew her as “Star.”

“It fit her well, because anywhere she went, she shined,” Kaleesha said.

Shaketta’s dad, James Johnson, remembers his last visit to Shaketta’s apartment before she died.

She asked him if he wanted a snow cone from a passing truck.

He said no.

“She came back and stuck one in my hand,” he said. It was strawberry red. “That was the last time I saw her alive. That sticks with me all the time.”
