PotC: Ch 3

Summary: Brooke is a 21 year old girl who’s life is flipped upside down when she receives a phone call from someone she hasn’t heard from in years. This phone call leads to events that cause her to get sucked back into the lives of two young men whom she hasn’t spoken to in years. Her life is never the same. Along the way she learns a secret about herself that not even her father had known. She is forced to face her destiny. Which path will she choose: duty or family?

A/N: I suck at summaries. I started writing this fic YEARS ago. It was posted here on Tumblr, but I have made some edits recently and have decided to repost it. This requires some introduction though. I had a thought one day of what the show would look like if there was a female character that was brought in that actually stuck around for longer than a season or two. And because the thought wouldn’t go away this story and Brooke were born. I had a lot of good feedback the last time I posted this years ago so I decided to repost it for my new followers with some edits.

Disclaimer: There is a LOT of direct quotes and scenes from the show. Especially in the first few chapters. I do not own any of it. I only claim the character of Brooke and how she fits into the story. All else is credited to the writers and copyright holders of the show Supernatural.

Warning: There is some smut thrown in randomly for the first 5 chapters as flashbacks to establish timeline, character building, and relationships, but after that the smut dies off. Also, let’s just assume condoms are implied. They aren’t mentioned, but let’s assume they are used.

As she stood watching the paramedics take Meg’s body out the front door she couldn’t help but think about what had happened to her father’s body. Had whoever found him given him a proper burial? Did they cremate him or did they bury him? Had anyone actually found him or was his body still lying there, cold and alone?

“Miss?” The deputy said bringing her back to reality. “Can you repeat that last bit for me please?”

“Yeah, sure. I came in and saw Bobby on the phone, apparently talking to you guys, and saw the girl on the floor, dead.” Just as she and Bobby had rehearsed.

“And where were you when the fall occurred?” The deputy said as he wrote her statement down.

“I wasn’t here. I just arrived.”

“Just arrived?”

“I’m just visiting.” She took a deep breath, “My father just passed and Bobby is the only family I have and he offered to put me up for a while.” She felt a stitch in her side tighten. She had said it out loud for the first time.

“Alright, and just to clarify, you’ve never seen this girl before today?”

“No, sir, I have not.”

Bobby’s story was that she was a transient that was helping him on a few projects in exchange for cash and she was up on the roof of the shop fixing a leak when she slipped and fell. It was the only “accident” he could think of that would explain her injuries.

When the deputies and the paramedics had gotten on their way Bobby turned to Brooke and looked her straight in the eye. He didn’t speak, he just looked at her for a good few seconds, then gestured for her to follow him outside. As they walked through the lot her mind went back to what had happened to her father’s body. She didn’t want to think about it, it hurt to think the man that had always been there, the man that had protected her all her life was reduced to a body, an empty shell. Sure they didn’t get along much the past few years and he always made her feel underappreciated and useless, but he was her father and she had to know if he was given the proper respects, the respects of a hunter. She wiped away a tear as she spoke, “Bobby, do you know what happened to my dad’s body?”

He stopped walking and turned to face her. A look of surprise mixed with utter concern on his face. She could tell he was surprised she was ready to even talk about my father yet. “A hunter friend of mine found him and Caleb and gave them both a hunter’s send off. Proper respects were paid and proper care was given.”

“Thanks.”

He nodded and continued walking toward the shop.

It was customary to salt and burn the body of a hunter upon their demise. Angry ghosts are generally created through a brutal death. Many hunters don’t wish to roam this earth and become the things that they hunt, and as they more often than not die a gruesome death, the only way to prevent this is to salt and burn the body. It’s become almost ritualistic with wrapping the body in white cloth and then placing it upon a large pyre of wood to be burned. There were still some that opted for the traditional burial, but her dad had wanted to be burned and she was happy to hear his wishes had been carried out.

They stopped walking just outside the shop next to a beaten up, rusting sedan. To which Bobby gestured.

“What about it?” It was a piece of junk, not even worth a dime.

“This is your project to earn your keep. Tear her down. Anything worth keeping I want you to put in the shop, everything else is to go over in that bin. And when you’re done with this one, I’ll give ya another.” He tipped his hat and walked away.

Brooke knew this project was a bunch of bull. There was nothing on this car worth salvaging so tearing this car down served no purpose but to keep her busy. Bobby of course was well aware that she knew this. She just shook my head and got to work. She welcomed the busy work. The less idle she was the less likely she was to let her mind wander. She knew she would have to face it all eventually, and that she would have to deal with it, but she just wasn’t ready to do that all quite yet. She knew my father had been given a hunter’s send off and for now that was enough for her. She would deal with the rest of it later.

As she wiped grease from her hands she realized the sun was going down. She hadn’t realized she had been at this project for that long. She tossed the rag in a bin and headed up to the house.

“I was just about to give you a holler.” Bobby said from in front of the stove, as she walked in the back door and took off her boots. “I hope you like sausage it’s all I got right now,” he gave her a sheepish smile. Bobby was a constant bachelor and lived alone with very few guests. She hardly expected him to prepare her a five course meal with game hen as the main course, let alone cook for her at all.

“Sausage is fine.” She said as she grabbed a couple beers from the nearly empty fridge. She made a mental note to do some proper grocery shopping tomorrow.

She sat down at the small kitchen table and set one of the beers on the side closest to him. As Bobby cooked she looked around the room and realized how run down this place really was. When she was younger she thought it was cool that Bobby lived in this run down place, gave him more of an edge, but now, as she took in the peeling wallpaper and discolored kitchen cabinets, she realized just how alone Bobby really was. His wife had died long before she had met him and he’d been alone ever since.

She was lost in thoughts about Bobby and his life when she felt something scratch her arm. She looked down and saw that on the arm of the chair were rub marks. This had been the chair they had tied Meg to earlier. This was the chair that innocent girl had been strapped down to while they exorcised the demon that had taken over her body. Brooke wondered if she had been awake through it all and if she had lived would she still feel the straps rubbing her wrists raw years later as Brooke still did. She closed her eyes and reminded herself that John had been doing what he thought he had to.

She looked up to see Bobby standing beside the table, plates in hand, staring at her. When they made eye contact he gave an unsure smile and set a plate in front of her. They ate in silence. She could tell by his sideways glances that Bobby was concerned for her. She had been through a lot these past couple days. She would be concerned for her too if she were him. She wanted to tell him that she was okay, that she would get through it, but she honestly didn’t know if she was okay or not.

She thanked Bobby for the meal and headed off to the spare room. On her way out of the kitchen she spotted a bottle of whiskey amongst some books that was still half full. She grabbed it as she walked by, hoping Bobby didn’t see, but she knew he had.

She sat on the floor with her back against the bed and stared at the wall. Her mind immediately began to reel. She wasn’t sure which emotion to feel first or which thought was forming when. They all just came in a rush all jumbled together. She took a long draw from the whiskey and welcomed the burn.

She didn’t want to think about any of it. She didn’t want to think about her father dying and leaving her alone in this world. She didn’t want to think about why these old memories of that night in Illinois kept creeping back up. She didn’t want to think about that poor innocent girl that had died earlier today. She didn’t want to feel the pain, she didn’t want to feel the anger, she didn’t want to feel the emptiness. Because than it would all be real, and she didn’t want to accept that it was real, that it was all really happening. She took another draw from the bottle and felt the world around her slip away just slightly. She had never been one to turn to the bottle, but she wasn’t ready to face reality, not yet. She wasn’t ready to feel the pain. Yes, she had exacted her revenge for her father and that demon bitch was back in hell where she belonged, but for some reason that didn’t seem to matter, it didn’t seem to make anything better. She took another long swig and slowly allowed its poisons to take her over. She remembered the promise she had made to herself the night before, the demon was gone, and she smiled slightly at how fast that revenge had been taken out, but now that it was all over she was getting out. She needed to get away from all this death and pain. She wanted a regular life. She took another draw from the bottle as she realized that Sam, who had wanted out so badly, had seemed to get pulled back in, but she didn’t have a brother like Dean to drag her ass back in. She had no one so a fresh start was possible for her. As she finished off the bottle and the world began to slip away she made the decision to start her new life at first light.

It’s a Rumor, a Legend, a Mystery

“Your brother,” Bellamy said dumbly.

“Clarke Griffin didn’t have a brother,” Miller hissed beside him, not quite quiet enough to keep Clair from overhearing.

She sighed and dropped the hand she’d put half around Bellamy. “He’s not my blood brother,” she said, “but he’ll protect me like one. Speaking of which....” She sent a withering look to Lincoln, who was still focused on Bellamy. “I told you already, put that away.”

“I won’t shoot if he steps away and leaves you alone,” Lincoln replied, low and demanding.

“Under other circumstances, I wouldn’t be opposed, but I need him for something.” Clair sighed. “Look, he didn’t kidnap me or anything, Lincoln, it’s okay. Can you please just let me explain? Without shooting my companions?”

Clair felt Bellamy’s gaze slide over to her at the word companions and tensed a little. She hadn’t meant it like that, like they were a group now; she’d just been trying to ease Lincoln’s mind. It was too late to take back now, though, so she offered Bellamy only a glance in return.

Lincoln shifted his gaze back to Bellamy and glared at him harshly, as if he were trying to see through his very soul. Bellamy stared back defiantly, and after a long moment Lincoln caved. “Fine,” he growled, lowering his weapon and stepping forward, though she noticed his fingers were still itching over the string like he was ready to lift it again.

“Away, Lincoln. I don’t want you killing anyone, especially when you’re technically over boundary lines.”

“So are you,” Lincoln grumbled, but slung the bow over his back nonetheless. “All right, explain.”

“First things first—introductions. This is Miller, and this is Bellamy. They’re from Skaikru, obviously.”

“Obviously,” Lincoln said, skirting his eyes over the two of them again, but with less distaste this time. “How’d you end up with them anyway?”

“By accident, at first, but now...well, it’s sort of a long story.”

Lincoln crossed his arms. “I’ve got time.”

Bellamy explained the situation again, including the story of the lost princess since Lincoln wasn’t very familiar with it; he was oddly careful to be precise about all the details, adding where he’d heard this or that as if it was helpful to the situation. She sort of wanted to tell him to hurry up, but forced herself to be quiet until he finished.

Lincoln turned directly to her. “So?”

Clair gave him a look. “So, what?”

“Do you believe them?”

Clair swallowed hard, remembering the lump in her stomach as they walked through the same path a two-year-old girl had once taken, like there was a flood of memories waiting to burst out of her. Part of her wasn’t sure she wanted them to, but most of her was too desperate and curious to resist. “Yes. Or, at least, it’s a possibility.” Lincoln started to say something, probably wanting to argue, but she cut in. “You don’t know where I came from, right? You always talk about family, and I could find mine, Lincoln. The one I lost.”

He hesitated before letting out a resigned sigh. “Fine. But I’m coming with you.”

It was Miller who voiced her thoughts. “What?”

“If you’re going on some journey to find your maybe-mother in Skaikru territory, so am I. You don’t get to find one family and leave the other behind.”

Clair paled a little. “Lincoln, that’s not what I meant—”

“I know that,” he said, softer, and put a hand on her shoulder. “But I’m not letting you go without me, either. I have to make sure you’re safe, right?”

“We’re not exactly going to throw her in a pit,” Bellamy started to protest, but Lincoln cut him off sharply.

“Thanks for the input, but I didn’t ask you. It’ll take more than words for your trust to be earned with me.”

Bellamy stayed quiet after that.

“All right. Say you do come with us,” Clair said slowly, working it out in her brain. “Will the plan still work? I mean, getting one non-sky person through was going to be hard enough, and you’re much larger and tattooed than I am.”

“Most of that isn’t too hard, once we get you cleaned up,” Miller shrugged. “With a new set of clothes and a way to hide some of those tattoos, it’s just a matter of how to get you there, really. Mrs. Griffin moved a long way away.”

“I don’t suppose getting new clothes is going to involve more walking, is it?” Clair groaned, only half joking. “My legs are killing me.”

“Alas, it will,” Bellamy said. He was actually smiling a little bit, rather than his usual sarcastic smirk, though he hid it fairly well. “But don’t worry, there’s way more walking to come.”

They headed back to town, but split up once they arrived—Miller and Lincoln one way, Bellamy and Clair the other. Lincoln argued about this, of course, but Clair insisted she could handle herself and they parted ways.

She and Bellamy snuck through a back alleys – she did her best to remain quiet, overly aware of Bellamy’s eyes on her every time she made a sound – and ended up in front of a small but intimidating building with a sign in large, sloppy block letters: Juvenile Center.

“Is this a prison or something?” she asked, looking over the building with distaste. Did Bellamy go anywhere that wasn’t creepy?

Bellamy laughed; it had a weirdly nice ring to it. “Not legally, but you’ve got the idea down. This is where the troublemaking kids go now instead of the skybox like they did in space. When they turn eighteen, they either join society again or go to an official prison if they haven’t gotten their lives together.”

“And we’re here to...what? Steal some criminal kids’ clothes?”

“Not us, just me. You’ll wait outside.” He paused, then added, “And they’re my sister’s clothes, but yes.”

Then, being the dramatic type she already figured him out to be, he slipped inside without giving a further explanation.

She nearly went in after him before remembering he’d told her to wait outside – which made sense, since getting caught breaking into a building in a town that she didn’t belong in was sort of doubly bad – and huffed, going to the side and sitting against the wall.

While she waited, Clair tried to go over everything that had happened. The scouting mission with Lincoln already felt like years ago, though it must’ve only been a few hours. And now she was going on an illegal adventure with her brother and two strangers to maybe find her long-lost mother. It was crazy at best, and definitely the worst idea she’d ever had, but somehow...somehow she couldn’t imagine backing out. The experience in the forest was too real for that, and besides, there was something about Bellamy—a secret, something he wasn’t sharing with anyone. She was itching to pry it out.

Sometime later – a few minutes? An hour? It was getting harder and harder to tell – she heard the click of a door and a voice hissing, “You out here, Princess?”

“You did not just call me that,” she replied, standing and entering the light.

He shrugged, not even bothering to conceal his smug smirk. “Better get used to it, if you really think you’re the real deal.”

“If you really thought I was the real deal, you’d be a little nicer,” she muttered, then noticed the clothes in his arms. “Is your sister the vandalizing sort of criminal or the murder type of criminal? Because despite what your people probably think of my people, I’m not big on blood, especially on clothes.”

“More the insubordinate, running-off kind,” Bellamy said, with the air of someone who knew just how insubordinate she could be.

“What, she not like her parents or did they not like her?” Clair asked, taking the clothes and looking through them.

“She doesn’t have parents to hate; just me.”

Clair froze at his words and the bitter, hollow tone they carried. She kept her eyes carefully on the clothes in her hands, wishing she could think of something to say better than, “Oh.”

“You don’t have to tiptoe around me,” Bellamy said gruffly, like he’d been through this whole situation too many times to count—which, he probably had. “Neither of our dads were ever in the picture, and Mom died when she was just a baby. Nothing you can say will hurt.”

“Actually, I was going to think of something sad about my family to say to distract you,” she said, looking up cautiously, “but you seem to know most of it already.”

He held her gaze for a moment, and she sensed...something. Like he was looking at her for the first time. Then he cleared his throat and the moment was done. “You’ll need to see if those fit, and I’m assuming you don’t want to that right here, so go around back.”

“Wait, only one outfit?” she asked, confused. “This isn’t exactly going to be a day trip.”

“That’s all we can spare to take without anyone noticing,” he said; then, when she still didn’t move, “We’ll get you more clothes later, but this is all you’ll need for now and we have to get moving, so just go, please.” He pushed her lightly away from him for emphasis.

She huffed and stalked off to change, muttering a few choice phrases, but when she glanced back, Bellamy was staring at the building the way she’d looked at the forest, like he’d lost something, and she couldn’t hold onto her annoyance.

The clothes fit, technically, though they weren’t the right shape for her and clung to her curves in a couple of odd places, but they’d have to do. She went back to Bellamy, who checked her over and said it’d be fine, and they waited back at the edge of town until Miller and Lincoln arrived.

“It was harder than expected, finding something that fit him,” Miller explained, referring to the mismatched, ill-fitting clothing they’d found for her brother, including an oversized beanie to hide his head tattoos.

Lincoln just sulked, and Clair had to work hard not to laugh.

“Well, what now?” Clair asked, looking at the strange quartet they made—the mystery, the con man, the brother, and the princess. It would be a miracle for them to make it to the capital, but that didn’t stop a tiny part of her from swelling with excitement.

(She realized a moment later she’d referred to herself as princess and promptly decided to never reveal that to Bellamy.)

“We have plenty of food and supplies packed away already, so we’re basically ready to go,” Miller said.

Lincoln looked at the darkening sky with a frown. “Except it’s too late to do anything right now, I’d wager.”

“Yeah, night travel is dangerous,” Bellamy agreed. “We’ll have to go back to the hideout to sleep and start out in the morning.”

“This adventure is starting to look more like an errands list,” Clair grumbled, but followed him just the same.

The hideout was interesting, but small, and Bellamy and Miller insisted they all stay in one room—supposedly to ward off attacks better, but Clair knew they really just wanted to keep them from running off, which was silly. She was the one who had agreed to find her mom; she wasn’t about to back out now.

Bellamy and Miller had their own beds, though they were crude; there were no spare beds, however, and Clair was looking around for something to sleep on when she heard a familiarly snarky voice say, “Not used to sleeping on the floor, Princess?”

“I lived in forest clan, not some castle,” she shot back, not giving Bellamy the satisfaction of looking up. “Are there blankets or am I just cuddling with your books?”

“Here,” Miller said; she glanced up and saw his armload of blankets and pillows. “Bellamy’s right about the floor, though; we don’t have many guests.”

Clair took them from his arms and laid them out on the floor, side by side. It reminded her a little of how Lincoln would sleep beside her when she was small, tucking her face into his chest because it was the only way she could sleep without nightmares. Of course, when she got older she refused such a childish set-up, nightmares or no, but it still made her sort of nostalgic to think about him patting down her hair and calming her down with his words until she fell asleep.

And something else, too. A different kind of nostalgia; homesickness for something she didn’t remember. It made her dizzy.

“Whoa, easy there,” Miller said, catching her as she swayed. “That walking must’ve really gotten to you, huh? Just lie down and get some rest. We’ve got a long day tomorrow and you probably don’t want to pass out in the middle of nowhere.”

She nodded and slowly went to her knees when she saw Bellamy moving towards the front. “Hey, where are you going?”

Miller grunted in agreement, crossing his arms across his chest. “Getting a midnight snack or something?”

“I’m sleeping in the front room,” said Bellamy. “So if anyone comes in, they’ll just see me. And yes, that means the princess or Lincoln can have one of the beds, if they’re so inclined.”

“They won’t look on further?” Clair asked skeptically.

“If they recognize me, and they will, they’ll expect me to be alone,” Bellamy muttered darkly, turning to go.

“Said like someone who’s done it before,” Clair called after him, feeling a strange urge to pull something out of him, force this sarcastic, closed-of fman to say something real.

“Get some sleep, Princess,” Bellamy said without turning, and shut the door between them.

Lincoln didn’t seem to mind the situation as much as Clair expected, simply laying out on one pile of blankets and pulling the others on top of him, tipping his head to indicate she take the bed. She did, hesitantly, already thinking about the teasing she would get from Bellamy in the morning but not entirely minding.

As she slipped under the covers, Clair noticed Miller standing by the door, fuming. “That idiot Bellamy Blake. He knows between the two of us it’s better if I get caught, and if he didn’t have such a thick skull he’d see that. He’s going to blow his cover. And I don’t care if you can hear me, by the way!” he added, louder.

“If you’re so worried about him getting caught,” Clair said, bored, “why not just switch with him?”

Miller looked over his shoulder at her with a raised eyebrow. “Even you should’ve realized by now how stubborn Bellamy is. He’d sooner have his hands cut off than admit he was wrong about something, especially when it puts a friend in danger.”

“What would happen to you if you got caught? Is it really so bad to be in an abandoned building?”

“If we were some random people off the street? No, not really. Maybe some community work, a little jail time at most, just to give us a lesson,” he said. “Problem is, I came from that juvie center he took you to for clothes. Being out in the community past eighteen is our second chance, so getting caught doing any infraction means a long time in jail.”

Clair pursed her lips, unsure if she should continue but too curious to stop. “What about him?”

Miller scowled. “Let’s just say it’d be worse for him to get caught here than both you and your brother combined.”

She opened her mouth again, wanting to ask why, but it was clear from Miller’s clipped tone he was done speaking. He went to his own bed – though not before kicking the door and cursing at Bellamy through it – and burrowed under the sheets.

“If there’s one thing Bellamy’s right about,” he said, just as Clair was about to drift off, “it’s to get some sleep. I have a feeling it’s going to be a long, long day tomorrow.”

I was struck by an uninsured driver on 02-10-11. Because the driver who struck me was uninsured I was forced to file a claim with my insurance company(Omni Insurance). The car was towed to CJ's collision at 6128 n beechwood Philadelphia, pa ,19138 on 02-11-11. Phone number 215-848-2836. On 02-14-11 Omni insurance sent out an appraiser to evaluate the vehicle. They then faxed an estimate on 02-15-11 totaling $5300 to CJ's collision shop. I went to the collision shop on 02-15-11 to sign paperwork giving them permission to work on my car. They then began the repairs. On 02-18-11 the insurance company then deemed my car a total loss. The vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Altima SL with 96,477 miles. The NADA value for the vehicle is 10,995. According to Omni insurance a car is deemed a total loss when the repairs reach 70% of the value of the vehicle. Omni insurance valued my car at 7,415. They then proposed a settlement offer of 5826.40. They deducted 975.00 in prior damages(which I disagree with) and 1000.00 my deductible. The settlement offer included 386.40 in sales tax. After negotiating on 02-28-11 they proposed an offer of 7835.30. The value they gave my car was 9255. Again 975.00 was deducted and my 1000.00 deductible. They including sales tax and tags/registration fee in the offer. I accepted the offer out of desperation because they also stopped paying for the rental car I was driving on 02-28-11. I work, attend school and have a child my schedule requires that I have a car so I paid out of pocket for a rental car until 03-07-11, expecting the payment to be issued to my lien holder by then so I could purchase another car. I contacted them on 03-07-11 inquiring about my payment and was informed they did not pick the vehicle up from the collision shop therefore they were not issuing a payment. The collision shop gave them a bill of 1750.00 for the repairs they did and the storage fees. The insurance company disagrees with this and refuses to pick the vehicle up and issue my payment. They have also stated this may come out of my settlement offer. The insurance company already has the title to the car and all the necessary paperwork to the vehicle but refuses to issue a payment. It has been a month since I filed my claim and I can no longer afford to pay for a rental especially since it seems I will have to purchase a new vehicle. Financial Samurai Goals 2018: Back To Early Retirement Life!

My biggest disappointment in 2017 was pushing my mind and my body past their limits. At the age of 40, I no longer have the energy to do what I’ve been used to doing all my life, yet I worked more than I ever had before. I was a stubborn mule who couldn’t accept the fact that I had aged. As a result, I injured my ankle, back, elbow and quads.

I also had a breakdown one evening when I couldn’t put my son to bed after the third try at around midnight. Hearing my baby cry is a heart-stinging experience. After an hour and a half of singing and cradling, I gave up on giving my wife the rest she needed and texted her to relieve me.

I felt like such a failure. I had spent years building a lifestyle business in order to be able to be a good father. Yet I lost it because I was working way too much on the business instead of storing up energy reserves for the late night shift.

It was at this moment I realized that going down the path of full-time caretaker with my wife while also keeping Financial Samurai going at a fervent pace wasn’t going to work out. I was no longer my happy go lucky pleasant self. Here are some goals that will make life better in 2018!

Goals For 2018

1) Return to early retirement life. As this site has grown more people are reaching out for help or contacting me with business opportunities. It’s become overwhelming. No longer is Financial Samurai a casual, unknown site where I can say and do what I please.

I want to respond to everybody but I can’t. Therefore, I created a massive out of office e-mail with answers to my most frequent requests. But it was ineffective. One business partner e-mailed me on Dec 22, then again on Dec 26, then again on Jan 2. It’s good he’s hustling, but what happened to boundaries, especially during the holidays?

In 2018 two of my goals are to publish only 100 articles (from 175) and to start having more fun with the topics without stressing about the quality of the content. While the business component of this site is exciting, it has become too much. Just like with day job income, after you make a certain amount of business income, there is no more additional happiness. Instead, misery often ensues due to increased demands for your time.

Early retirement life is all about being carefree and only doing what I enjoy.

2) For six days a week, provide an average six hours of JOYFUL assistance to my wife. For the seventh day, provide four hours of joyful assistance for a total of 40 hours a week.

As a stay at home dad, I provided around eight hours of support to my wife in 2017. For example, I would always relieve her for 2-3 hours in the morning, depending on how difficult the night was so she could shower, go to the bathroom, catch up on reading, and do her own thing. Then I’d provide care for 2-3 hours in the afternoon, and another 3-4 hours in the evening.

After a while, I realized that a lot of my assistance was not 100% done with a smile because I was always sleep deprived and sometimes frustrated after having already worked so many hours that same day on the business. As a result, tension sometimes ensued. Thankfully, she started doing the entire night after the third month and things got better. And now that my publishing goal is 35% less, things should get even better.

Providing six hours a day of happy care is better than eight hours a day of grumpy care. I know I’m not alone with regards to relationship tension during the first year of a baby’s life. More than 80% of couples experience a huge drop (40% – 90%) in marital quality during the transition to parenthood. Research also says folks who are sleep deprived typically suffer a 91% loss in their ability to regulate strong emotions, while the decline in general cognitive skill is equally dramatic. Just think about how dangerous it is to drive drowsy.

3) Increase business productivity. In other words, find a way to do less and maximize my existing content to boost traffic and revenue. I will never spend more than four hours a day on the business in 2018. Further, I will cease responding to comment and e-mail questions whose answers are obviously discernible in the post and encourage readers to use the search box on my website for answers.

Not bad for 10 days of work over the holidays

With time freed up from not responding to obvious questions, I plan on building new readership by answering questions on Quora, a Q&A social platform. I’ve always known about the benefits of Quora, but never bothered to try until the Christmas holiday when a reader asked whether I was sleep deprived in my 2017 review post even though that’s what I wrote I was in my intro. Instead of answering his question, I responded to a question on Quora that ended up bringing in a lot of new traffic.

I plan on building up my authority on everything San Francisco, Real Estate, and Investing related. Even though I’ve lived in San Francisco for 17 years, own SF real estate, worked in finance, consulted for startups, and have this site, very few people in the SF media have reached out. If I can become a go-to resource, then productivity should increase.

After 10 days of trying, Quora has ranked me as a “Most Viewed Writer” in Real Estate and San Francisco. The ranking only lasts for 30 days, but I’m sure with consistency, the results will grow.

4) Spend more time doing work in the hot tub. Through voice dictation, I’m actually writing this post in my hot tub right now. Not only am I utilizing my hot tub investment more, but I’m getting some stress relief while also producing work. Of course I’ll still have to do all the editing on the laptop, but this is a good way to really focus on living the early retirement lifestyle. Whenever I can knock out two or three things in one activity, I get very happy.

5) Aggressively spend more money on help. Until recently, we’ve always done all the lawn work, housecleaning, and childcare. There’s something therapeutic about gardening and cleaning. But now that we are tired parents, we need to prioritize! I really need help at this stage because my lower back is still tender. It’s kind of torturous to crawl around and chase a baby for a couple hours with a bad back.

Finally, I’m looking to hire someone who has a disability do some freelance work online. Roughly 15% of the world’s population, or one billion people experience some form of disability. Not only will this person get paid a fair hourly wage, this person will also gain some valuable insights about the online business world. 6) Continue to help people of all types in different ways. This means publish two times a week, produce at least 30 podcasts, see my foster child mentee at least 24 times, coach high school tennis, and participate in more fundraising events. Actively helping others by getting involved in their lives is one of the best benefits of early retirement.

7) Stop feeling so damn guilty for not doing more. I have a tortured soul. Since I was 13, I’ve always had the belief that if I can, I must because a friend of mine died in a car accident and was never given the chance. But with this attitude, I feel a tremendous weight on my shoulders to be the financial provider and a caregiver for my son, even though my wife is a stay-at-home parent and we should be enough money.

I sought some advice about getting rid of guilt from a father who told me, “Raising a child is pretty easy if you can go away for 12 hours a day. Out of sight, out of mind.” In other words, he was suggesting that I find a day job like many fathers. But I don’t want to go that route.

Whenever I feel bad for not doing enough, I will remind myself that being able to provide my wife and me the freedom to take care of our son during his crucial first five years of life should count for a lot. There are many parents who reluctantly have to go back to work after 1-3 months.

8) Get regular physical checkups. One in three people will get cancer. And one in four people will die from cancer. The closest thing to curing cancer is early detection. However, most cancer is detected only after a patient feels symptoms. By stage three, only 8% of cancer patients live past five years. I bring up cancer because an old colleague of mine died of breast cancer at age 44. She leaves behind two children and a husband. I cannot imagine the pain of leaving Earth before I see my son grow up to be a strong and independent man who finds someone who loves him as much as we do.

As much as I hate full physicals, I will get one. And I will ask my doctor to do more blood work tests to see if they can find any anomalies. If I feel pain, I won’t be afraid to see the doctor. After all, I’m paying close to $700 a month for healthcare! Good thing I did some blood work in mid-2017 for my life insurance policy. After checking for 22 variables, the only anomaly was a slightly elevated cholesterol reading.

9) Find a way to grow net worth by $2 million. What’s a personal finance site without a concrete financial goal. With the estate tax threshold doubling to $22 million for couples, why not shoot for more wealth while taking things down a notch. The more you have, the more time and money you have to help other people. I assign only a 30% chance my investment returns plus savings will achieve this goal. Therefore, the only way to get a $2 million boost is if I invent something that takes off, get some kind of huge JV offer for my company, build a new revenue channel, or get really lucky with an investment. As always, I’ll be tracking my net worth closely to make sure my risk exposure is appropriate.

Excited About Early Retirement

One benefit about returning to the kick back early retirement lifestyle is that I’ll be writing more about early retirement. It’s really a wonderful stage that I think everybody should shoot for. It just didn’t last longer than a year for me due to my strong desire to maximize Financial Samurai’s potential.

2018 is the year I’ve been waiting for. To finally relax and be a present dad after spending so much time growing passive income and building a lifestyle business. Our little one is growing up so fast. We’ve got to cherish every moment. It’s highly likely he’ll be our only child given our advanced ages.

So Friday morning, my fiance' and I were headed to New Jersey to visit his family for Christmas. On the way there, I was driving his truck so he could sleep a little before we switched places. We were in much better shape; but again, he was not in pain and his door was the only thing that seemed to be damaged. Hi everyone, I would appreciate your ideas regarding the following situation: My son had a car accident last week in a nearby WalMart parking lot (Dallas, Paulding County, GA). He was driving down a parking lane and hit a car which came out of nowhere cutting across the aisle. Both vehicles had extensive damage (front of the vehicle on our car, and driver side on the other car). There was a gentleman who saw everything and called 911. The sheriff's deputy arrived at the scene promptly. He explained there would be an accident report, but since this happened in a private parking lot, he was not in a position to state who was at fault. I got the report the other day and it states the facts about the accident and gives the contact information for the witness. I have spoken with the other driver's insurance company three times and I just found out that their claims rep has determined that my son was at fault, so they have denied my claim. The claim with them was actually originally filed by the other driver. I politely asked to speak with a supervisor and was advised that I should expect to receive a call from a supervisor soon. I did not get a chance to talk to my insurance rep after I found out the other insurance denied the claim, but I am not sure if there is anything my insurance can do for us, especially given the fact that we only have liablity coverage on this vehicle (no collision coverage either). I think it is really outrageous how they could claim my son was at fault, if all evidence points to the fact that their insured was driving across the parking lanes and obviously did not see our car. I cannot find anything online (like traffic regulations) that explicitly says that the driver cutting across the parking lanes is at fault if there is a collision, but I think it is common sense that this should be the responsible party! If anyone has had a similar experience, or has any suggestions, your help will be very much appreciated!""
