Day 3 of being in the new place. We've got one (1) ethernet port out from the router, and sweetheart thinks that her having wired internet to her desktop takes priority to wifi for the entire unit. (Router then goes to modem that makes the wifi, or maybe reverse idc). She's got the splitter but hasn't tested it.
I understand that she's in a severely delicate mental state, but that doesn't negate my frustrations. Like how I was dead tired yesterday and just flopped into bed with the promise she would help me with some of my checklist that I likely should have done yesterday this morning. Then wake up tomorrow to learn she stayed up all night, so she's likely going to eat breakfast then go to bed.
I'm gonna talk to her (cause communication is important) but again, extenuating circumstances don't mean I can't still feel and work through emotions. Trying to do that therapy shit and unlearn childhood stuff is hard but it's a 24/7 thing.
Thanks for listening, gays in my phone, as I externally process things with my internet diary.

Ethernet Splitter vs Switch: Choosing the Right Solution for Your Network
In today's connected world, your network setup plays a critical role in everything from productivity to entertainment. If you've ever faced the challenge of connecting multiple devices with limited Ethernet ports, you're not alone. The two most common solutions are Ethernet splitters and Ethernet switches. While they may sound similar, they function very differently. In this guide, we'll explore what they are, how they work, and when to use each one.
What is an Ethernet Splitter?
An Ethernet splitter is a small, passive device that allows two devices to share a single Ethernet cable. It splits the cable into two paths, letting you connect two devices to one port. Splitters are inexpensive and easy to install, but they come with limitations.
How Ethernet Splitters Work
Ethernet cables like Cat5e and Cat6 have eight internal wires. In a 10/100 Mbps connection, only four of those wires are used, leaving four unused. Splitters utilize these unused wires to transmit a second signal. However, a pair of splitters is required—one near the router and one near the endpoint.
Pros of Ethernet Splitters
Affordable and simple to use
No power required
Reduces cable clutter
Cons of Ethernet Splitters
Only supports two devices
Maximum speed of 100 Mbps
Not compatible with Gigabit Ethernet
What is an Ethernet Switch?
An Ethernet switch is an intelligent networking device that connects multiple devices in a network and manages data traffic efficiently. It provides dedicated bandwidth to each connected device, unlike splitters that divide one stream.
How Ethernet Switches Work
Switches use packet-switching technology to send data only to the specific device it's intended for. They maintain a MAC address table to route data accurately. Switches operate in full-duplex mode, enabling simultaneous sending and receiving.
Pros of Ethernet Switches
Supports multiple devices (from 4 to 48+ ports)
Full Gigabit speeds or higher
Manages traffic efficiently
Easily expandable
Cons of Ethernet Switches
Requires power
More expensive than splitters
Occupies more space
Comparing Ethernet Splitters and Switches
Use Cases for Splitters and Switches
When to Use an Ethernet Splitter
Connecting two low-bandwidth devices
Temporary or budget setups
Reducing cables in small areas
When to Use an Ethernet Switch
Home offices and entertainment centers
Gaming and streaming setups
Small business networks
PoE device connectivity (e.g., IP cameras, VoIP phones)
Ethernet Splitter vs Switch vs Other Networking Tools
Ethernet Splitter vs Hub
Hubs broadcast data to all ports, causing congestion
Splitters are passive but limited in speed
Neither compares to a modern switch in efficiency
Ethernet Switch vs Patch Panel
Switch: Routes data between devices
Patch Panel: Organizes cable connections
Often used together for structured cabling
Real-World Applications
In a home setting, a splitter might work for connecting a desktop and printer in a guest room. However, for more robust setups—like connecting a smart TV, gaming console, and streaming device—an Ethernet switch is essential.
In offices, switches are invaluable. They ensure fast, uninterrupted connections for multiple users, especially in setups involving VoIP calls, cloud software, or large data transfers.
Final Thoughts
Choosing between an Ethernet splitter and switch depends on your network demands. Splitters offer a quick fix for basic needs but fall short on speed and scalability. Switches, while slightly more costly, provide future-proof reliability and performance.
If you're planning to upgrade your network, start with a quality Ethernet switch and pair it with reliable Cat6 or Cat6a cables from NewYork Cables. The right tools today can prevent connectivity headaches tomorrow.

From Simple to Smart: 8 Port PoE Switch to Simplify Network

Lay eyes on a setup wherein the wire that connects your network devices to the network at the same time functions as their power source, approving stable communication between them. Get into the world of Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches, or more simply the 8 Port PoE Switch, which is reshaping network setup and administration.
What is a PoE Switch 8 Port?
A PoE Switch 8 Port is a network switch with PoE eight ports, all eligible to provide both data and electrical power over a single Ethernet cable. This technique, known as Power over Ethernet (PoE), cuts out the need for independent power supplies for each networked device, simplifying installations and reducing chaos. In simple terms, an 8 Port PoE Switch acts as the soul of your network, passing around both connectivity and power to numerous devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, and far more.
What Does an 8 Port PoE Switch Do?
An 8 channel PoE switch has a dual purpose:
Data Transmission: Similar to all other network switches, it unites several devices within a local area network (LAN) and ensures data packets are competently routed to their hot spots.
Power Delivery: It feeds electrical power to linked devices employing Ethernet cables. This is especially functional for devices put in places where power outlets are hard to find or illogical to set up.
In essence, an 8 Port PoE Switch merge the functioning of a conventional network switch with the stepped up comfort of power distribution, turning it into a crucial tool for both home and business networks.
How Do I Determine if My Devices Are Compatible with a PoE Switch?
It’s crucial to confirm that your devices are compatible with PoE technology before getting a PoE switch. Here’s how you can determine compatibility:
Review the Device Specs: Go over the product specifications or the user manual of your devices. Words like “PoE,” “802.3 af,” or “802.3 at” signify compatibility with standard PoE or PoE+.
Manufacturer’s Information: Visit the manufacturer’s website or contact their support to verify if your device supports PoE.
PoE Adapters: If your device doesn’t natively support PoE, you can often use PoE splitters or injectors to adapt it for use with a PoE switch.
Being compatible is of utmost importance to make certain that your devices can be powered properly free from the need for additional power supplies.
What are the Power Limitations of an 8 Port PoE Switch?
Getting an idea of the power restrictions of your 8 Port PoE Switch is imperative for reliable network planning. Here are some crucials to look at:
Total Power Budget: Every PoE switch possesses a maximum power budget it can provide to all interconnected devices integrated. For example, a switch using a 120W power budget can circulate this power throughout its eight ports.
Per-Port Power: Several PoE standards offer differing levels of power per port. The standard 802.3 af provides up to 15.4 W per port, while 802.3 at (PoE+) offers up to 30W per port.
Device Power Requirements: Ensure that the power demand of your connected devices does not exceed the switch’s total power budget. For instance, if you have eight devices each requiring 15W, you need a switch with at least a 120W power budget.
Balancing your devices’ power requirements with the switch’s power capabilities ensures smooth and uninterrupted operation.
How Do I Manage and Configure an 8 Port PoE Switch?
Managing and configuring an 8 Port PoE Switch can seem daunting at first, but modern switches come with user-friendly interfaces that simplify the process. To get you going, follow these steps:
Connect to the Switch: First, connect your computer to one of the switch’s ports using an Ethernet cable.
Access the Management Interface: Enter the switch’s IP address into your web browser to access the management interface. The default IP address is usually provided in the switch’s manual.
Login: Use the default username and password to log in. It’s advisable to change these default credentials immediately for security reasons.
Configure Settings: Navigate through the interface to configure settings such as VLANs, QoS (Quality of Service), port configurations, and PoE settings. Most interfaces provide guides to help you through this process.
Firmware Updates: Check for firmware updates regularly to ensure your switch has the latest features and security enhancements.
By following these steps, you can customize your switch to meet your specific network requirements, ensuring optimal performance and security.
Can I Mix PoE and Non-PoE Devices on the Same Switch?
Absolutely! One of the significant advantages of PoE switches is their versatility. You can mix PoE and non-PoE devices on the same switch without any issues. Here’s how it works:
Automatic Detection: PoE switches are intelligent enough to detect whether a connected device is PoE-capable. If the device doesn’t require power, the switch simply acts as a standard Ethernet connection, delivering only data.
Non-PoE Ports: Some PoE switches come with dedicated non-PoE ports specifically for devices that do not need power over Ethernet, providing greater flexibility.
This capability allows you to integrate various devices into your network seamlessly, making your network infrastructure both versatile and scalable.
What are the Common Troubleshooting Steps if a PoE Device Isn’t Powering On?
Even with reliable equipment, issues can arise. Here are common troubleshooting steps if a PoE device isn’t powering on:
Check Connections: Ensure that all cables are securely connected and not damaged.
Verify Compatibility: Confirm that the device is PoE-compatible and that the switch port is configured correctly to deliver power.
Inspect the Power Budget: Ensure the switch’s total power budget isn’t exceeded. If necessary, disconnect some devices to free up power.
Port Status: Use the switch’s management interface to check the status of the port. Check for any status indications or error messages.
Reboot the Switch: Sometimes, a simple reboot can resolve connectivity issues.
Swap Ports: Try connecting the device to a different port to see if the issue is port-specific.
Use a PoE Injector: If the switch’s PoE function appears faulty, use a separate PoE injector to power the device temporarily.
By systematically going through these steps, you can identify and resolve common issues, ensuring your devices stay connected and powered.
How Do I Expand My Network if I Need More Than 8 PoE Ports?
An 8 Port PoE Switch is often sufficient for small to medium networks, but what if your network grows? Here are a few options to expand your network:
Add Another PoE Switch: You can daisy-chain another PoE switch by connecting it to one of the existing switch’s ports. This allows you to add more devices while maintaining power delivery and data connectivity.
Use a PoE Midspan: PoE midspans, also known as PoE injectors, can be used in line with your existing switch to provide additional PoE ports without needing to replace your switch.
Upgrade to a Larger Switch: If your network demands significant expansion, consider upgrading to a switch with more ports, such as a 16 or 24 port PoE switch.
Network Segmentation: Create separate network segments using multiple switches, which can help manage traffic more efficiently and improve overall performance.
These options provide flexibility in scaling your network to meet growing demands without compromising on performance or connectivity.

PoE vs Non-PoE: Choosing the Right Network Solution for Your Setup
What is PoE and How Does it Work?
Ethernet cables can now send data and electricity to linked devices thanks to a technology called Power over Ethernet (PoE).
This makes installation easier and reduces cable clutter by doing away with the need for separate power supplies.
PoE is frequently used to power network equipment like VoIP phones, wireless access points, and IP cameras—particularly in areas where installing electrical wiring would be costly or difficult.
It functions by utilising standardised protocols such as IEEE 802.3af (PoE), IEEE 802.3at (PoE+), and IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++).
These protocols provide varying power levels to accommodate different device needs, making them a flexible and scalable solution for contemporary network configurations.
What is a Non-PoE Setup?
Standard Ethernet switches that only send data—not power—are used in non-PoE configurations.
Each connected device, including desktops, laptops, printers, and standard network devices, needs to be powered by an external source or adapter in these kinds of setups.
Non-PoE switches are frequently utilised in settings where every device is already close to a power outlet, negating the need for separate Ethernet power delivery.
For standard office or home networks where sophisticated or remote power management is not needed, this configuration is adequate and reasonably priced.
Key Differences Between PoE and Non-PoE
There are a number of significant distinctions between PoE and non-PoE configurations.
The most important factor is power delivery; PoE switches can send data and power over a single Ethernet cable, while non-PoE switches only send data, necessitating that devices have their own power sources.
Because PoE switches have more features, they are typically more expensive. While non-PoE setups require separate power lines, which increases cable clutter, PoE simplifies cabling by requiring fewer cables.
Last but not least, PoE frequently shortens installation times, which makes it perfect for remote or large-scale deployments where efficiency is essential.
Use Cases: When to Choose PoE or Non-PoE
Depending on the needs of the network environment, PoE and non-PoE configurations have distinct functions.
PoE is perfect for powering devices like VoIP phones, IP surveillance cameras, wireless access points (WAPs), and smart building automation systems that are frequently placed in remote or difficult-to-reach areas.
By doing away with the requirement for independent power sources, it streamlines deployment. However, non-PoE configurations work best in conventional office settings where desktop computers, printers, and laptops are already near power outlets.
They are also a sensible option for small-scale or cost-sensitive networks where PoE is not required.
Final Thoughts: Which One is Right for You?
The size of your network, the kinds of devices you plan to connect, and the physical setting of your installation should all be taken into account when choosing between PoE and non-PoE.
PoE is a scalable and practical solution that offers centralised power management, which makes it perfect for expanding networks and contemporary smart infrastructures.
Despite its limitations in terms of power delivery, non-PoE is still an affordable option for configurations where advanced features are not needed and power is easily accessible.
PoE injectors or splitters can be used to create hybrid networks for mixed environments, which enables the effective integration of both kinds of devices within a single infrastructure.

Choosing the Right Smart Switch for Your Growing Network Needs
Let’s talk about your network. You’ve added more devices, your team’s grown, and suddenly your old setup feels like a tangled mess of cables and lag. The fix? A smart switch. Think of it as the backstage crew of your network quietly managing traffic, powering devices, and keeping things running smoothly. But with so many options, how do you pick the right one?
Enter the Netgear ProSAFE JGS524PE. This 24-port smart switch is a favourite for small to mid-sized setups, offering Power over Ethernet (PoE), easy management, and enough muscle to handle growing demands. But whether this model’s your match or not depends on what your network actually needs. Let’s simplify the hunt.
What Makes a Smart Switch “Smart”?
Unlike basic switches (glorified cable splitters), smart switches give you control. Need to prioritize video calls over TikTok binges? Set up Quality of Service (QoS). Want to split your network into secure zones? VLANs have your back. And PoE? That’s magic for powering gadgets like security cams or Wi-Fi hotspots through Ethernet no extra outlets needed.
3 Things to Ask Before Buying
How many devices do I need to connect? Count your wired gadgets now, then add 25% for growth. The JGS524PE’s 24 ports work for offices or studios, but a coffee shop might thrive with 8.
Do I need PoE? If you’ve got IP cameras, VoIP phones, or wireless access points, PoE is a game-changer. Just check the switch’s total power budget some can’t juice all ports at once.
How techy do I want to get?
Unmanaged switches: Plug and play. Zero drama.
Smart switches: Light customization (QoS, VLANs) without a PhD in IT.
Managed switches: For control freaks who love granular settings.
Most growing networks hit the sweet spot with smart switches.
Don’t Make These Mistakes
Overbuying: A bakery doesn’t need a $1,000 enterprise switch. Start small, scale later.
Ignoring Heat: Shoving a switch into a closet? Make sure it’s got cooling fans or vents. Fried electronics smell worse than burnt toast.
Skipping Labels: Trust me, you’ll forget which cable goes where. Color-code or cry later.
Why the Netgear JGS524PE Works for Many (But Not All)
This switch’s PoE+ support, cloud management, and 24 ports make it a solid pick for offices, schools, or creative studios. But if you’re just running a cozy home network with three devices? Save cash and space with something simpler.
TL;DR
Your network’s needs are as unique as your Spotify Wrapped. Match the switch’s ports, PoE budget, and brains to your actual setup not the flashiest specs. And if you’re eyeing the Netgear ProSAFE JGS524PE, ask yourself: “Do I need 24 ports, or am I just being extra?
Now go forth and untangle those cables. Your future self (and network) will thank you
