hihi! 2. three last songs you listened to: ik bagal, by piyush mishra, a song ive recently been obsessed with (could only find the eng trans from a vid thats also a cover here), koi by gen hoshino(!!) and cobalt by mob choir
6. three songs you wish you could erase from history (because they’re terrible): im v bad at remembering stuff i like in the first place afsh apologies for the cop out but im pretty sure ive either never disliked a song sm to wish its inexistence, and if i did, certainly dont remember it anymore
21. three songs of your childhood: a little difficult a little fun! ill say aashiyan from barfi, half bcs this album and all its songs r still my favorite years later (movie too!!) and half bcs i have way too nice memories of performing this song as a kid at an event at dad's work and getting complimented a lot (it was aided tho, im sure, by my front teeth missing). second would be ae mere zohra jabeen, a veeery old classic bollywood song, and v much beloved to me both when i was tiny and straining to catch my ma's radio during hw and now when i can add it to all my playlists. third!! raabta by shreya ghoshal, a song that annoys me a lot now simply bcs ive heard it >2000 times bcs it was such a (deserved) rage when it came out for a few yrs
24. three favourite old songs: tere naam! by alka yagnik (listened to a newish cover, fell in love, found its original version, fell sm in love!!) id again mention ae mere zohra jabeen by manna dey bcs i never get over how sweet and cute of an old song it is. third, kaheen dur jab din dhal jaye, movie anand bcs heyy its lyrics, i really love whats it abt!!
im not surprised its just wholly old bollywood bcs thats what majority of kids in india grow up on, either by their parents love for it, or being a kid in the era itself. plus! i could never rec old bollywood enough, its either so catchy that u cheer the love its talking abt, or so poetic that u..cheer the love its talking abt, half of the time managing to be both. not to mention the iconic voices with legions of songs to their names. thank u for asking, i had sm fun!!!

"Ye kya jagah hai dosto, ye kaun sa dayaar hai
Had-e-nigaah tak jahaan, gubaar hi gubaar hai"
Remembering Khayyam, the great composer of serene and sublime melodies, on his 4th death anniversary (19/08/19). Celebrating the musical journey of Khayyam, the maestro who left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. From his early days in Lahore, mentored by Baba Chishti, to his iconic contributions in Bollywood, his journey is awe-inspiring. Films like 'Heer Ranjha', 'Biwi', 'Shola Aur Shabnam', and 'Aakhri Khat' showcased his genius early on. His collaboration with poets, especially Sahir Ludhianvi, gave us masterpieces in 'Kabhi Kabhie' and 'Phir Subha Hogi'.
The 1981 classic 'Umrao Jaan' stands as a testament to his brilliance, with songs like "In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke" becoming evergreen hits. His work in 'Razia Sultan', especially "Aye Dil-e-Nadan", is considered a milestone. Khayyam's music, a blend of ghazals and Indian classical, was always rich in poetry and emotion. His generosity shone bright when he donated his entire wealth to support budding artists. A true maestro, his legacy will forever resonate in the corridors of Indian music

Kaalia: The "Angry Young Man"
Let's talk about Tinnu Anand's Kaalia.
Tumblr media
Released in 1981, the plot revolves around Kaalia, who is jailed after robbing his brother's employer. Leaving prison more hardened than before, Kaalia seeks revenge against the employer for ultimately causing his brother's death.
Tumblr media
This movie is quintessential old Bollywood, following the classic tropes present in that time period (wealthy evil villain, damsel in distress, hero you root for). Kaalia also balances the elements of the Bollywood formula (action + comedy + romance) without any sort of overexaggeration.
Tumblr media
Kaalia is filled with a casting list that is instantly recognizable to any longtime consumer of Bollywood classics: Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Amjad Khan, and Pran. In their time, the first two actors were famous for playing protagonists, while the latter two always played villain roles (although in Kaalia, Pran plays a good guy. Scary, but ultimately good.)
Tumblr media
The music, composed by R.D. Burman, is filled with many evergreen songs sung by legends like Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, and Mohammed Rafi. Here are three for your listening pleasure:
Kaun Kisi Ko Baandh Saka
Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai
Jab Se Tumko Dekha
The movie is 165 minutes long. Stream it on YouTube here with some popcorn and enjoy!

It’s been a while since I’ve last shared my fav Bollywood moments and it’s an evergreen on repeat! Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte does the job of both going through the decades of Bollywood styles, which is very informative, and also having Rani Mukherjee in it. This song can do no wrong.

Women have always been at the forefront of India’s vibrant music industry, shaping its soundscapes and contributing to its diverse legacy. In recent years, with the rise of streaming platforms like Spotify, female artists have found more creative freedom and wider audiences than ever before. From playback singers who dominate Bollywood charts to indie voices that redefine the sound of Indian pop, female musicians are making waves globally. When we look at popular Indian artists on Spotify, women are not just a part of the conversation—they are leading it. Let’s dive into the stories and music of some of the most successful and influential female artists currently thriving on Spotify.
1. Neha Kakkar: The Pop Sensation
Neha Kakkar has become one of the most sought-after playback singers in Bollywood. Known for her peppy dance numbers, her tracks consistently top Spotify charts. With her energetic voice and catchy tunes, she has created a unique niche for herself, appealing to both young listeners and Bollywood fans alike. Whether it’s the foot-tapping “Dilbar” or the soulful “Mile Ho Tum,” Kakkar’s versatility is key to her enduring popularity on Spotify. Her rise from a humble background to becoming a pop icon is nothing short of inspiring.
2. Jonita Gandhi: The Modern Fusion Artist
Born in India and raised in Canada, Jonita Gandhi has successfully blended her classical Indian roots with modern Western influences. Her ability to seamlessly shift between classical, contemporary, and even Western pop makes her one of the most popular Indian artists on Spotify today. Tracks like “The Breakup Song” and “Gili Gili Akkha” showcase her versatility. Gandhi’s YouTube covers have also attracted millions of fans, proving that her talent transcends the typical boundaries of Bollywood.
3. Shalmali Kholgade: Pioneer of Independent Pop
Shalmali Kholgade is a name that not only resonates in Bollywood but also in the indie music scene. Kholgade rose to fame with the chart-topping song “Pareshaan” from the movie Ishaqzaade, but she has since diversified her music portfolio. Shalmali’s independent releases like "Ruka Ruka" showcase her creative freedom, blending soulful lyrics with upbeat rhythms. On Spotify, her songs span across genres, and she continues to experiment with indie pop and R&B styles, making her one of the leading voices among popular Indian artists on Spotify.
4. Raja Kumari: The Indian-American Rap Star
Raja Kumari is redefining what it means to be a female rapper in India. Known for her fusion of traditional Indian music and modern rap, she’s built a unique soundscape that sets her apart. Her tracks “City Slums” and “Shook” are bold, unapologetic, and speak to her experiences growing up in an Indian-American household. Kumari’s confidence and creative expression have earned her a significant fan base not just in India, but globally. As one of the few female rappers among popular Indian artists on Spotify, she is breaking barriers and paving the way for future female artists.
5. Tulsi Kumar: Bollywood’s Melodious Queen
Tulsi Kumar is synonymous with Bollywood’s romantic ballads. Daughter of legendary music producer Gulshan Kumar, she has created a distinct identity for herself. Known for her soothing voice, her chartbusters such as “Tum Jo Aaye” and “Paniyon Sa” have been widely streamed on Spotify. Whether it’s a romantic number or a sad melody, Tulsi Kumar’s presence on the streaming platform continues to grow, making her a prominent figure among popular Indian artists on Spotify.
6. Shreya Ghoshal: The Evergreen Icon

7. Dhvani Bhanushali: The New-Age Pop Princess
Dhvani Bhanushali is a rising star in India’s pop music landscape. Her songs like “Vaaste” and “Leja Re” have amassed millions of streams, making her one of the youngest female artists to achieve such success on Spotify. Bhanushali’s youthful energy and pop-friendly melodies resonate with a younger audience, positioning her as one of the fastest-rising female voices in the Indian music scene. Her chart-topping hits have not only ruled Bollywood playlists but also made her a household name among Spotify listeners worldwide.
8. Sunidhi Chauhan: Versatile and Dynamic
Sunidhi Chauhan has been an unstoppable force in Indian music for over two decades. Known for her powerful voice, she is one of the most versatile singers in the industry. These artists have not only dominated Bollywood charts but have also explored new genres, making significant contributions to the global music landscape. As we’ve seen, the list of popular Indian artists on Spotify is incomplete without these remarkable women who continue to break barriers and redefine the Indian music scene. Whether through independent music or mainstream hits, they have shown that Indian female artists are not just following trends but are shaping them.
