Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi is a famous poem by Mirza Ghalib. The song was popularized by Jagjit Singh the legendary Ghazal Singer. Shantanu Moitra scored using Ghalib's lyrics for the movie Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. He brought in Indian Classical Elements into this wonderful song and had Shubha Mudgal sing this song. The effect of the this wonderful fusion of genres resulted in a song which calms the soul. Know what is a "mondegreen?'

MONDEGREENS

If you’ve been listening to rock music, you know it’s often hard to make out the lyrics. They sing it their way and we hear it our way.

Jimi Hendrix famously sang the phrase “While I kiss the sky” which was heard by thousands as “While I kissed this guy.”

CCR’s popular song originally said, “There’s a bad moon on the rise.” Many heard it as “There’s a bathroom on the right.”

Deep Purple’s still-popular chorus (known for its timeless guitar riff) “Smoke on the water/Fire in the sky” was misheard as “Smoke on the water/Fire engine guy.”

Nirvana’s anthem “Smells like Teen Spirit” had the lines, “Here we are now/Entertain us.” They were misheard as, “Here we are now/In containers.”

When Elvis Presley sang, “Everybody in the whole cell block”, many heard it as” Everybody in a wholesale frock”

There’s actually a word for misheard lyrics like these.

Mondegreen.

Some mondegreens became so famous that even artistes like Hendrix and CCR sang the misheard versions in their live concerts in a spirit of fun and tease.

It’s not just in pop songs that mondegreens occur. The US national anthem begins with the lofty words, “Oh say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light.’ Some heard them as “José, can you see…”

Occasionally, mondegreens had an interesting side-effect. Joe Cocker sang of a ‘lovely planet’ which was misheard as ‘lonely planet.’ The latter became the name of a well-known travel guide series of books.

No one knows why we hear the wrong thing although there are theories. It’s akin to the game of Chinese Whispers where the original line gets progressively distorted into some hilarious garbage by the time it reaches the last guy.

Mondegreens are not restricted to English alone. South Indians, with limited knowledge of Hindi, were taught patriotic songs in Hindi by zealous teachers. A popular one had the repeating phrase, “Bara tamata.” School students sang it with great gusto. Years later, some of them realized the actual words were “Bharat Mata.”

A popular line from Qurbani song, “Aap jaisa koi meri/zindagee mein aaye/ toh baat bun jaaye” was understood as “Aap jaisa koi…toh baap bun jaaye.” The defective version made sense to many who saw Zeenat Aman gyrating on those lyrics while gaping at Feroz Khan.

Many who weren’t familiar with the hill station between Bombay and Pune heard the Gulaami song as “Haathi ka andaa la” until they realized it was “Aati kya Khandala”.

I have a friend, her name is Geeta. Her family called her Gitu. Throughout her childhood and youth, she thought Rajesh Khanna was singing for her, when he said, ”Mere sapnon ki raani kab aaye Gitu”.

'Mondegreen' sounds French but isn't. In 1954, a writer at Harper’s Magazine remembered how as a little girl she misheard an old English ballad. The actual words, saluting a dead war hero, were:

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘰' 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯.

And thus was born the word ‘mondegreen’ to signify all misheard lyrics from that moment on.

Turns out, mondegreen itself started life as a mondegreen.

Tribute to Hindi Cinema's Legendary Singer/Actress Tun Tun on Her Birth Anniversary Today (11/07).

She gave us beautiful music and made us laugh. Starting as a young singer and later becoming the well-loved comedian Tun Tun, her impact is unforgettable. Born Uma Devi Khatri in 1923 in a small village in Uttar Pradesh, she lost her parents early. Her uncle raised her in a strict Punjabi family. Despite not having formal music training, she learned to sing from the radio. During a time when girls' education was rare and their ambitions were often discouraged, Uma Devi bravely taught herself to read and write Hindi, and even some Urdu and English, to help her singing career.

At 13, she ran away to Bombay to follow her dreams and challenge the singers she admired. She wanted to sing for Naushad, a composer she thought was the best. After many attempts, she finally sang for him and impressed him with a song by Noor Jehan. Her career began with the hit song "Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon" from the movie Dard in 1947. But her success didn't last long.

The chaos of India's partition affected the film industry, and as the Mangeshkar sisters became popular, Uma Devi's opportunities decreased. She knew her voice couldn't compete with theirs, and she had gained a lot of weight. Naushad, her Rakhi brother, saw her talent for comedy and suggested she try acting.

This led to her successful second career. She made her acting debut in the film Babul, produced by Naushad, with stars like Dilip Kumar and Nargis. She was given the name Tun Tun, which became famous. As the first well-known comedienne in Indian cinema, she entertained people in movies like Aar Paar, Pyaasa, Mr. and Mrs. 55, and Mom Ki Gudiya.

Tun Tun is remembered as one of the few artists who successfully switched from singing to comedy, leaving a lasting legacy in Hindi films.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Loustat (Vampire Chronicles), or all my oc x canons. Loustat will always be famous for a reason. Dysfunctional bi4bi vampires!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? N/a, I am a completionist.

16. What are your writing strengths? My high school writing teacher said I was well-versed in all aspects of writing, but if I had to pick one, character creation/research for worldbuilding.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Editing. But I manage, it helps I speak well and (usually) have good grammar.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I'd try for the sake of trying. I put French and Hindi in my fics cause those are my strongest (not English) languages.

Biography --

Zakir was sixteen when he moved from New Delhi to New York City hoping to find a richer more full-filling life there. He hoped to become a famous rapper. He grew up the oldest son of a Muslim and Hindu couple, with little prospect in life other than continue his father's business. His uncle - a friend of his father rather than his actual uncle - told him stories of America, of New York City, and the American Dream.

He got into crime because he needed funds and connections to gain his fame. He's known for making songs in which he fluently meshes languages and meanings together, rapping under the alias Baagee. However, a lot of his time is spent translating for Dead Hand or using his understanding of languages to decipher coded messages.

He's been releasing songs steadily during the past five years, and has been an official associate of Dead Hand for three years.

He's a polyglot; he speaks multiple languages and easily picks up new ones. Currently he's learning Portuguese, Mandarin & Bahasa Malay. He's however always interested in learning more.

He addresses anyone his age with either habibi/habibti ( ‘my dear’ or 'my love’ in Arabic ) or bhai/bhen ( 'brother’/'sister' in Hindi / Indic language ), and anyone older than him as auntie or uncle. Does this consistently and with respect.

Despite his mastery of languages, Zakir still has a distinct accent when speaking in Russian, English or Spanish.

He produces his own music.

He's a romantic, friendly and charming, and a little afraid of violence. Will always portray the role of a diplomat in a conflict.

Zakir was raised in a Muslim and Hindu household, though neither him nor his siblings got much of a choice which religion they wanted to follow. As a result he still follows a lot of rules from Islam and participates in all its religious days, including Ramadan.

He doesn't drink or smoke - though he on occasion uses the drugs available at El Anhelo, and has his way to say why those aren't as bad.
