Buried under a seemingly ever-increasing pile of open-world explorathons, and free-to-play multiplayer shooters, it’s easy to miss games that focus on contained, single-player experiences. Somehow,”Evil West” seemed to come and go like a blood-drenched tumbleweed with little to no fanfare. That’s a real shame because if you ever wondered what would happen if “Resident Evil 4” (2005), “God of War” (2018), and “Doom” (2016) had a baby, “Evil West” would be that baby.
Part third-person shooter, part over-the-top brawler, “Evil West” puts you in the spurs of vampire slayer Jessie Rentier. Jesse’s on a quest to keep the Wild West safe from the creatures of the night one bullet (or electrified punch) at a time.
Streaming tonight at 7:30 Central: We’re tangling with the undead in “Evil West.” And just in case you need another throwback action game, “Gun Grave G.O.R.E.” (2022) is also on deck.  twitch.tv/lifebeginsat8bit

For Throwback Thursday, we have decided to reenact a memorable moment from our very first Explorathon when we were walking along Limestone Road (Route 7). It was about 7:30 in the morning after a long night of walking. We were tired and our legs were sore so we were going crazy at the moment. Since it was a Sunday morning, we kept saying in old people voices, “Church is coming, ring the bells!” I don’t know where that saying came from but it’s definitely an Explorathon moment I’ll never forget!

Do you like to explore? I came to this T on one of my DoorDash runs and had to pause to snap this photo. I’ve seen so many interesting parts of Tucson. And I heard that Old Tucson Studios has a new lease holder. I’m looking forward to what I will manifest in regards to working with the new tenant. TAG NINE PEOPLE YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW BETTER!
Tumblr media
favourite colour(s): Jeweltones? At least that's what my wife says they are. Deep vivid colors- typically blues, greens, and oranges. But we'll go with blue for this.
favourite genre(s): Of??? Fiction??? Or writing? Either way I think my best time is to be had with adventure and mystery, but tinting both with a comedic edge. Not marvel level but some lightheartedness to break things up here and there. Things that play out on a bigger scale. Whether it's geographical or emotional. Toss some fluff in there.
favourite music: I've got a pic somewhere that makes fun of how varied my taste is. I dunno where I'd place it. Indie? Otakucore? The artist I've been savoring the most as of late is SIAMES. They're amazing. Just listen to this.
favourite movie: Have I waxed poetic about Everything Everywhere All At Once as of late? Because oh does that really get up there for me. Alongside Fury Road and Parasite. Consider it recency bias or something but those all are a jam for different reasons.
favourite series: For video games? Metroid and Rune Factory. Those explorathon and farm sim genres always scratch a good itch for me. I love upgrading powers and getting to open new doors man it's a problem. For anime? Gankutsuou. A fantastic rendition of the count of monte cristo. The visual style is amazing and I love the dub to boot. A series I go back to watch a lot. For TV? Idk. It's been so long since I watched current tv stuff. Better Call Saul sure was a trip.
last song: I'm always shuffling through tracks like mad and listening to random things on youtube or spotify. To pin down an answer in a better way. The last song I added to my favs on spotify is this one.
last series: 🤔 I guess the last thing I 'wrapped up' watching was Bocchi. Which was definitely the best of the season.
last movie: Puss in Boots Last Wish. :^) I'd see that again to be honest. Totally out of left field how good it was. Had no right going that hard with style, substance, and character. Hope it wins best animated pic.
currently reading: I tried reading the Bullet Train book but couldn't really get into it as much. I dunno what it says about me that I found the movie a lot more entertaining and compelling. The complete book I read before that was the 7.5 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. And that was a couple years ago.
currently watching: A few things. F to the Nier anime, because that was really good. I'm really enjoying Tomo-chan is a Girl, Trigun Stampede, and the campfire isekai tho.
currently working on: Kinda scattered right now trying to set my gears. I was doing drafts on @cadcnce and now I might do some more here or hit things on the sideblog. We'll see. My wife's about to leave for work and then I'll settle in and decide... perhaps... after a nice long workout. :V
tagged by: @ofliminalities thanks!! still squinting at you tho tagging: @psychcdelica @orderbourne @prinzessins @eliteimperialism @paraleech @sparklymuses @squidsavior @pastballads @musesofthemoon how about that grabbed nine, or you can steal it! :V

Explorathon ‘16
A great pleasure for me as a scientist is to have the opportunity to inspire and encourage a love of science in others. For this reason, I wholeheartedly embrace all outreach activities offered to me. In September 2016, Glasgow University was to host a science spectacular as part the National Explorathon and the larger European-wide European Researchers’ Night. With my punnet of strawberries, GFP (green fluorescent protein) expressing Drosophila flies and fellow nEUROSTRESSPEPers in tow, I was ready to hit the Glasgow Science Centre to tell the world (or at least visitors to the Centre) all about pest insects and the research of nEUROSTRESSPEP. Whether chatting to the scientifically minded staff at the centre, or to the adorable toddlers fascinated by the creepy-crawlies, the evening proved to be thoroughly enjoyable and a roaring success. I am already eagerly awaiting next year’s event.

Why Beyond Blue is shaping up to be much more than Blue Planet: The Game http://bit.ly/2M4hzjI
Tumblr media
If you’ve ever been to a big, public gaming show, you’ll know a large part of your day is often spent being bombarded by at least fifteen different loudspeakers all vying for you to come and sample the source of their whizz-pop sound effects and booming trailer videos. E-Line Media’s booth for ocean explorathon Beyond Blue, however, was like a small oasis of calm when I visited it back at PAX East, if only because the developers had sensibly given everyone headphones so the soothing whines of its whales and sharp clicks of its playful dolphins wouldn’t get lost in the surrounding hubbub of the very loud Just Beats and Shapes pod next door.
I’m glad they did, because otherwise I’d have missed a large chunk of what makes Beyond Blue so intriguing. Developed in close partnership with the BBC’s Blue Planet II documentary crew, it might not offer quite as romantic a vision of the ocean as, say, the lovely Abzu does, but its natural, semi-photorealistic divers and sea life feel just as wonderful to control and interact with. Beyond that, its emphasis on tracking, cataloguing and getting players to think critically about the state of our own real-life oceans through what sounds like an almost Jurassic World Evolution-style strategy layer suggests E-Line are dropping their anchor much deeper than other ocean explorer games have before.

An overview of my work as Artist in Residence at RSPB Baron's Haugh. My residency has taken inspiration from the Listening Cave, a curved brick structure on the adjacent Dalziel Estate thought to have been built for Lady Hamilton in 1765 to amplify the sound of the Dalziel Burn and the waterfall below. Three outdoor sound installations were developed which aim to engage with hidden and historical listening on the site. 'Flow' uses small variations in the movement of water through the Dalziel Burn to animate a series of mechanical bird calls. 'Cycles' uses simple analog solar circuits to mimic natural cycles on the site and references the haugh's historic use as grazing land for cattle. Lastly 'Echo' creates an immersive sound environment on the Clyde Walkway at dusk with lights and bells triggered by the live echolocation of bats. Presented as part of Sounding the Landscape at RSPB Baron's Haugh and Glasgow Explorathon - both 2019. Further documentation of each piece can be found here - Flow (4.10) - https://ift.tt/2NZs8U0 Cycles (11.50) - https://ift.tt/2mvREWn Echo (11.40) - https://ift.tt/37gizHY #soundingthelandscape

Here is the map for our fourth and final Explorathon! Things got really crazy this time around and once again, we had an incident where we had to think on our feet when things didn’t go according to plan and made history by doing our very first Double Explorathon! This time around, we walked for 22.8 Miles and we were out and about for 14 hours and 8 minutes! While we didn’t go out with a bang like I had hoped, this is still an amazing accomplishment and I had a great time regardless of all the pain my legs were in during and after this adventure and I will definitely remember this for a long time! It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey!
