Century Series - Convair F-102 Delta Dagger
Developed from the cancelled Convair XF-92. First flown in 1953, entering service in 1956, and retired in 1976 (1979 in Greece and Turkey). 1,000 were built. The initial design of the aircraft was limited to just under Mach 1, due to high transonic drag. After an extensive redesign, the modified aircraft had longer range and could fly at up to Mach 1.25. Armed with 24 2.75 inch FFAR (Folding Fin Aerial Rockets), up to 6 AIM-4 Falcon air-to-air missiles, or one AIM-26 Falcon conventional or nuclear air-to-air missile. F-102s were deployed to Vietnam in 1962, serving as bomber escorts, fighter interceptors, and in a limited air-to-ground role. 14 aircraft were lost, one to air-to-air combat. Over 200 were converted to target drones after retirement, with the last one shot down in 1986.
