Today, during a work meeting, I shared my screen. One coworker wasn't familiar with how to transfer a file from the mainframe computer to a personal computer or virtual desktop. We have a file transfer program for that, but she had never used it. During a project call (with only five people), she asked me to show her.

My first step was copying the file from one dataset to another, which had a different name. My FTP will not recognize the format of the original file name, so I create one that includes my user ID in the name.

Someone else on the call watched me do this and told me if I was copying every line I could skip two tiny steps. Then he went a step further, explaining a command I'd never heard of. It allocates a new file and copies everything simultaneously.

Mind blown.

I was going from point A to point B, via points Y and Z. My extra steps only added a few moments to the process, but now, after learning this command, I feel like I'd been wasting much time over the past 20 years.

application: here are the high-end protocols! like http, ftp (file transfer protocol, what were you thinking?) and the dreaded simple mail transfer protocol which i can say after studying it, it is not simple

presentation: applications dont speak internet, so presentation handles (de)codification, (de)encryption and (de)compression however the Protocols see fit

session: most protocols don't have functions or buffers to remember who sent what so session handles keeping connections alive with sessions: little tin cans with a string so the two members of the communication remember each other

transport: this guy is responsible for whether you want to use tcp or udp as a transport protocol (tcp is slower and has data validation for the recipient, udp is faster but fails more often) and chopping up data in tidbits to actually be able to wring them around the net

network: handles ip addresses, routing and telling the other guy everything is okay because that fuckass udp lost me two whole packet fragments

data-link: the oddball of the bunch because it has a dash in its name. and also because it's two sublayers under a trenchcoat

physical: takes whatever the upper layers gobbled up and zip-zaps the cable to send electricity

basically what happens is application concocts the data, hands it to presentatiom and one it is done, it hands it down to session, so on and so forth until physical sends it to the recipient who is going to do the opposite! physical takes the data, gives it to data-link, d-l chews it up a bit, gives it to network until application gets the oh-so-coveted picture of a cat the sender was sending

it's not over yet as those cheeky bastards managed to wedge the stack open with a lego brick remover and stick a little guy called secure sockets layer in to secure the sockets (woah.). he's dead and now we have transport layer security which is that, but better

YT-DLP: Downloading YouTube Videos the Right Way

There are many YouTube downloaders, many of them awful, some functional, some free, some paid. But very few of them download the videos correctly and are as fully featured for the price of yt-dlp. It does everything you can think of to download video and more and it does it for free! (⁠ﾉ⁠*⁠0⁠*⁠)⁠ﾉ

You better get used to command line because yt-dlp has no GUI! It's frustrating, but it's what we got. I have made some scripts that you can copy-paste and edit. Making a functional script literally took me TWELVE HOURS STRAIGHT to figure out. This was due to people answering simple questions in forums and reddit posts being frustratingly obtuse, unwatchably annoying video tutorials, and me trial-and-erroring my way to success on a slow-as-fuck computer, BUT HEY we got there eventually! ಥ⁠‿⁠ಥ

The output files will be in the yt-dlp folder. There is an output command where you can choose where you put the videos, but I could not for the life of me figure it out and 12 hours straight of troubleshooting has left me broken and scarred. ¯⁠\⁠(⁠°���_⁠o⁠)⁠/⁠¯

yt-dlp is rife with options. Feel free to look through their commands list and figure out which one works best for you!

Also, yt-dlp works with many other websites besides YouTube! Newgrounds, Facebook, Twitter, news sites, Crunchyroll, p0rn sites; you name it, it's probably on there.

There is also an Android version called Seal 🦭

Thanks to its GUI, it works much more simply!

You could use an FTP server app to transfer downloads over WiFi to your computer in case command prompt shenanigans are too much for you. (It definitely was frustrating for me!)

En 1944, il est muté à Paris et, lors de la libération de la ville, défend sur les barricades le pont d'Austerlitz à la tête d'un groupe d'une trentaine de combattants.
