Let's talk about Desi representation again!!

I don't talk about this stuff often but when I do, I have some strong ass opinions

and yes I'm gonna be talking about none other than Pavitr Prabhakar at the end cuz he's just special to me <3

Hollywood is lagging behind on Desi representation

You'd think one of the biggest film industries in the world would be able to represent us properly, considering the fact that we make up the largest group of South-Asian Americans and the second largest group of Asian-Americans in the US, but instead-

Western Television forces Indians to conform to harmful stereotypes

Some of the most popular Desi characters on screen are Raj Koothrappali from the Big Bang Theory, Devi Vishwakumar from Never Have I Ever and Kelly Kapoor from the Office.

Indian men are almost always portrayed as robotics engineers and computer whizzes, but with terrible social intellect, making them seem like awkward nerds.

Indian women are almost always portrayed as "whitewashed", or wanting to appear more western, with zero understanding of their own culture or language along with an unrelenting need for attention from white friends/colleagues.

These are both based on stereotypes that Indian culture is "toxic" and "too traditional" and that Indians are only interested in studies.

Most Desi characters in western media have stories that are solely based around their ethnicity and/or racial stereotypes.

British television actually showcases a lot more representation than Hollywood does

I was watching Polite Society, a movie starring two Pakistani characters as the main leads, and there was a dance scene where both the leads are wearing traditional desi attire. My mom turned over, looked at me, and asked, "Is this Hollywood? It can't be."

And she was right. It's a British movie with British-Pakistani actors.

The reason she didn't believe that it could've been Hollywood was because the dresses the two leads were wearing were traditional and beautiful and the song playing in the background was authentic Hindi music, not some random westernized DJ version of it.

A Hollywood movie would've never dressed up their Desi actors in actually flattering attire (*cough cough the Patel twins from Harry Potter) or have used real, popular Desi music in the background.

You see my point?

It is so uncommon to see well-thought-out Desi representation in TV nowadays, where to see real diversity we have to watch movies made by the same country that colonized us.

Ironic.

British movies/shows with desi leads have far better South Asian representation than anything I've seen in Hollywood recently.

The Hollywood movies starring Indian leads, like Slumdog Millionaire or Bend it like Beckham were filmed in the UK, and because they were filmed in the UK, they had fantastic South Asian representation.

Not only does Hollywood refuse to create shows and movies about real problems that South Asians face, but they also don't cast South Asian actors in good roles.

When's the last time you saw a South Asian actor playing a character that wasn't a walking stereotype? When's the last time you saw a South Asian actor playing a character that was a genuine part of the story rather than just comedic relief or a random smart kid in the classroom?

Not often, right?

Me, personally, I didn't grow up with a lot of South Asian characters or actors in shows/movies that I watched. In fact, every time someone even close to my skin color showed up on TV, I was on the edge of my seat because it was just so rare to see it.

This is why representation matters.

You've heard about all the young girls with braids being so excited when the new little mermaid with Halle Bailey came out. Well, us desi kids wanted that too.

I wanted to see a Telugu speaking girl with wavy hair and dark skin who would wear traditional clothing to Desi get-togethers and parties, go to the temple with her family, eat vegetarian Indian meals, etc...

I wanted to see a character who was a representation of me and my experiences as an Indian-American. I wanted to see a character that was at least a representation of Indians or just South Asians in general.

Instead, we were given characters that ridiculed their own culture, were extreme stereotypes and furthered the existence of casual racism in western society today. So many Desi kids experience small acts of racism on a daily basis because people have been so desensitized to the existence of these stereotypes.

Telling South Asians that their culture is a joke and feeding non-asian children media which pokes fun at other cultures is harmful, not only to us South Asians but also communities that could end up being targeted next.

Pavitr Prabhakar; Representation Matters

If you've been following me or if we're mutuals, you probably know I have a tiny obsession with Pavitr Prabhakar. But why?

Because of all the reasons I just listed.

There are few South Asian characters us Desis can look up to these days, and Pavitr Prabhakar is one of the maybe two or three characters who have great writing, magnificent representation, and overall a fun vibe.

He's likable, funny, smart and best of all, unapologetically Desi.

He's just like all the other side characters, with a little bit of his own culture mixed in. He's not being shoved down our throats to further an agenda about fake diversity, he's not a walking stereotype and best of all, he was designed by Indian creators.

He's refreshing and exciting to follow in a world full of a demand for half-hearted representations and the people who created him were obviously putting their hearts and souls into it.

He's awoken a love for Indian culture amongst, not only Desi children themselves but also among westerners who, prior to this, had thought of India as a "3rd world" country, because that's the agenda that Hollywood pushes onto many South Asian countries today.

She came in the night, silver anklets shining through his closed eyes that dreamt about a different life. Perhaps a string of warped reality where everyone didn't just assume what he wanted.

"Yevandi? " her voice came low, urgent syllables over the sounds of moonlight. "Yevandi..." Bangles clanked near him.

Well this wasn't a dream. Sita indeed stood hunched in front of him with pleading eyes. Bheem sprung up, only to be shushed by her. Her gaze flitted to Lacchu behind him in the open verandah— his cousin snorted in his sleep and wriggled back into deep sleep.

All his other cousins and family weren't awake, no beds creaking of the seven others he could see. His family did everything as a team: shopping? Together ; eating? Together ; Seeing a potential bride, the entire football team would march in.

"Sita gaaru," Bheem followed her beckons out to the back garden, giving into her insistent grip on his forearm. Even in a white sari that restricted her steps around the sprouting grasses, Sita's legs rushed in front of him, fluent in the language of grace.

"Please, I really need to talk to you."

When they reached a secluded spot, Bheem waited for her to stop avoiding his eyes and talk to him.

"I'm not saying this out of any spite that you're a village leader." Sita had finally started. "In fact I admire you for all that you do for your loved ones... But I think one thing built up to another this morning, I didn't really say yes to the marriage proposal."

Sita Mahalakshmi, daughter of the revered sarpanch Athreya Pani, had just sat in front of him that morning a few hours ago. She was decked in gold, her kohl-rimmed doe eyes hid everything she was probably feeling.

She hadn't spoken at all when the elders talked of their marriage. All in all, Bheem had realized he hadn't heard her voice till then.

And the first thing she said was that she didn't want to get married to him.

Bheem knew it was unfair of him to feel happiness blossoming in his chest. Especially when his recently would-have-been-but-no-more fiancée was sobbing into her knees.

"It's okay andi..." he said the only thing he could have without spilling his heart out.

His mother never loved his father. "What has love got to do with marriage na verri kanna!" she used to say. The abject result of their marriage was a child who never saw his mother be treated like a person.

"It's better you said it now. I don't feel bad."

Her wet brows peeked out from between her locked hands. "Really? What will we say to the elders?"

He kneeled down beside the pond in front of her with an understanding smile. "If you really don't want this marriage, I am not one to force. We can say I changed my mind."

"But you don't understand!" she shouted.

They immediately cringed at the noise, Sita looking around to catch anyone awake and running to them.

Silence.

Bheem watched her relax and sniffle.

"Is there any specific problem? Cheppandi, it's okay..."

"It's not something that is accepted!" she insisted.

Bheem never drew boundaries. He saw to it that he could treat people around him as tenderly as a farmer tended to a newborn calf. The calf led the way and the shepherd protected it.

"Sita gaaru," he said, "You don't have to talk to me, but looks like you've been carrying some weight inside you. I just want to help."

He knew what she was thinking. Pages of guidelines would have been flipping in her head, trying to find where such a guy had plopped down from. People in this village wanted to know nothing but where the snake had bit. Anything else was of no use to them. But Bheem was different.

He was an ally.

Slowly, her gaze opened up a new puzzle. "There was a girl..."

Writing systems

A writing system is a method of visually representing verbal communication. There are about 4,000 languages that make use of an established writing system.

All writing systems require:

at least one set of defined base elements or symbols, individually termed signs and collectively called a script;

at least one set of rules and conventions (orthography) understood and shared by a community, which assigns meaning to the base elements (graphemes), their ordering, and their relation to one another;

at least one language (generally spoken) whose constructions are represented and can be recalled by the interpretation of these elements and rules;

some physical means of distinctly representing the symbols by application to a permanent or semi-permanent medium, so they may be interpreted (usually visually, but tactile systems have also been devised).

Generally, there are three major types of writing systems: alphabets, syllabaries, and logographies. There are a number of subdivisions of each type, and there are different classifications of writing systems in different sources.

Alphabets use a standard set of letters representing the consonants and vowels of a spoken language. The correspondence is almost never one-to-one. Usually several different letters represent one phoneme and/or several phonemes are represented by the same letter. Alternately, a sequence of two or more letters can represent a single phoneme. Abjads differ from alphabets in that vowels are not indicated, and in abugidas or alphasyllabaries each character represents a consonant-vowel pairing.

Syllabaries consist of symbols that represent syllables, which are considered to be a basic building block of the words.

Logographies use characters corresponding to words, morphemes, or other semantic units.

Alphabets typically use a set of less than 100 symbols to fully express a language, whereas syllabaries can have several hundred, and logographies can have thousands of symbols.

Segmental systems

A segmental script has graphemes which represent the phonemes (basic units of sound) of a language.

Alphabets

Alphabets, or phonemic alphabets, are sets of letters that represent consonants and vowels. The word “alphabet” is derived from alpha and beta, the first two symbols of the Greek alphabet.

Alphabets currently in use include Armenian, Cyrillic, Georgian (Mkhedruli), Greek, Korean (hangŭl), Latin/Roman, N’Ko, and Tifinagh.

Abjads

The first type of alphabet that was developed was the abjad. An abjad is an alphabetic writing system where there is one symbol per consonant. Abjads differ from other alphabets in that they have characters only for consonant sounds, although vocalization is used in specific contexts, such as in religious books and children’s books. The term “abjad” takes its name from the old order of the Arabic alphabet’s consonants 'alif, bā', jīm, and dāl.

Arabic, Hebrew, and Thaana are the only abjads currently in use, but Samaritan and Syriac are used to a limited extent.

Abugidas

An abugida is an alphabetic writing system whose basic signs denote consonants with an inherent vowel and where consistent modifications of the basic sign indicate a different vowel than the inherent one. The graphic similarity of most abugidas comes from the fact that they are derived from abjads, so that consonants make up the symbols with the inherent vowel and new vowel symbols are markings added on to the base symbol. The name “abugida” is derived from the first four characters of an order of the Ge’ez script used in some contexts.

Abugidas that are currently in use include Bengali, Burmese, Cree (Nêhiyaw), Dehong Dai (Tai Le), Devanāgarī, Fraser, Ge’ez (Ethiopic), Gujarāti, Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Inuktitut, Kannada, Khmer, Lao, Malayalam, Naskapi (Innu Aimun), Ojibwe (Anishinaabe), Odia, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, and Tibetan. 

The ones used to a limited extent are Balinese, Batak, Bilang-bilang, Blackfoot (Siksika), Buhid, Carrier (Dulkw’ahke), Chakma, Cham, Dhurwa, Ditema, Gondi, Grantha, Hanifi, Hanuno’o, Hmong, Javanese, Jenticha, Kaithi, Kerinci, Khoiki, Kirat Rai, Kulitan, Lampung, Lanna, Lepcha (Róng-Ríng), Limbu/Kirati, Lontara, Lota Ende, Manipuri (Meetei Mayek), Mon, Mwangwego, New Tai Lue, Ranjana, Rejang, Sasak, Satera Jontal, Saurashtra, Shan, Sharda, Siddham, Sorang Sompeng, Soyombo, Sundanese, Syloti Nagri, Tagalog, Tagbanwa, Tikamuli, Tolong Siki, Tigalari, and Varang Kshiti.

Syllabic systems

A syllabary is a set of written symbols that represent or approximate syllables, which make up words.

Syllabaries currently in use include Cherokee (Tsalagi), Hiragana (Japanese), Katakana (Japanese), and Yi (Nosu).

Logographic systems

The symbols used in logographic systems often represent both sound and meaning. These scripts can also be called semanto-phonetic, logophonetic, morphophonemic, or logosyllabic.

They may include the following types of symbol:

Pictograms and logograms

Pictograms or pictographs resemble the things they represent. Logograms are symbols that represent parts of words or whole words.

Ideograms

Ideograms or ideographs are symbols which graphically represent abstract ideas.

Compound characters

Compound characters include a semantic element, which represents or hints at their meaning, and a phonetic element, which shows or hints at their pronunciation.

The semanto-phonetic writing systems currently in use are Chinese (Zhōngwén) and Japanese (Nihongo), while Naxi is used mainly for decorative, ceremonial or religious purposes.

Directionality

Scripts are also graphically characterized by the direction in which they are written. Egyptian hieroglyphs were written either left to right or right to left.

The early alphabet could be written in multiple directions: horizontally (side to side), or vertically (up or down). Prior to standardization, alphabetic writing was done both left-to-right and right-to-left.

The Greek alphabet and its successors settled on a left-to-right pattern, from the top to the bottom of the page. Other scripts, such as Arabic and Hebrew, came to be written right-to-left. Scripts that incorporate Chinese characters have traditionally been written vertically (top-to-bottom), from the right to the left of the page, but nowadays are frequently written left-to-right, top-to-bottom, due to Western influence.

Jai Bolo Telangana (translation: Hail Telangana!) is a 2011 Telugu-language historical drama film based on the Telangana Movement.

The Telangana movement refers to a movement for the creation of a new state, Telangana, from the pre-existing state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Lasting for almost a decade, this has been one of the most long lasting movements in South India.

FUN FACT: The movie was released in 2011 while Telangana became an independant state in 2013. That means it was a historical movie that spoke of events to happen 2 years after the release date.

This song is extremely patriotic towards the state of Telangana and talks about wanting our resources, our land back, and our freedom back. As someone who didn't even live in the state for nearly half her life but has an extremely patriotic dad, I myself feel giddy when I listen to this song (albiet it being borderline cringey and weird)

Fun fact: The lyrics of this song was written by the current Chief Minister of the state of Telangana before he became the Chief Minister and back when he was leading the movement for a separate state.

Now why did Telangana want a separate state in the first place?

In 1956, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were merged as one state because both speak the same language– Telugu– because in India, states are divided based on language. Despite being legally recognised as one culture, there were many differences between the people of the two states when it came to native food, accents, lifestyles etc. and they didn't get along with each other. Gradually, the government (made of mostly politicians from Andhra) started exploiting the Telangana part of the state to benefit Andhra. Injustices in the distribution of water, budget allocations, and jobs made people of Telangana feel a sense of collectivity, start protesting for a separate state and a separate identity and end a discrimination hidden behind the fact that both speak the same language.
