No one told you when to run

I love my dad a lot. Fascinating to talk with, incredibly smart guy and probably the smartest person I know, maybe ever. Very funny and charming but introverted, so people like him a lot but interacting drains him.

Sister and I took him and his girlfriend out for Father's Day, though he muscled us off the bill. Had a nice time once the kid screaming "Fire! Fire! Fire!" behind us left.

Ten years ago it would've been an unremarkable evening, but now with people living apart and having jobs, even our ordinary dinner at a restaurant becomes much more special.

There's that stylized fact how once you're an adult, the vast majority of time you'll spend with your parents is done. I've always been close with my dad, and with time I've become more and more like him as genetics triumph over environment, and enjoy spending time with him more and more.

The idea that we're well past the midpoint is a sad one.

whenever my grandma calls me by the wrong name like my sister or something and apologizes I say "don't worry I know who I am!!!" and she giggles every time and I just wanted to tell that to the world

My family are smart, crazy, people. Impenetrable.

Dad's girlfriend is not stupid, but much closer to normal than any of us are, and awkwardly brings it up now and then.

Hanging out with my dad is one of my favorite things, since we both are into similar topics and get to discuss it, sharing bits one of us knows more about.

But my dad's girlfriend is exclusively into British TV and social drama, so when we hang out she basically just talks the whole time about that. Poor-reflection-on-character time: I don't care if her nephew failed to get into law school again. More than once they've had me over, and it turns out, also one of her friends, so she and the friend talk the whole time while me and my father sit silently both wishing we could talk separately to the main event.

I can't see a polite way to reliably ask if I can go hang out with my dad but not her. Until now when I invite my dad to get pho after work we've carved out some boys time but now tonight she's invited herself along.

I don't dislike her! But I don't have a lot of time spare, and now when I do find some to meet him in, she moves in on it.

i haven't written anything substantive since, oof, march and it feels bad. but i've been monstrously stressed about my thesis and that's probably why and it's understandable and reasonable and blah.

it's mostly just that i like writing and i'm sad i've not done it. but it's a little bit performance anxiety.

my cousin likes to try and predict what I'm about to say so he can jinx knock on wood me. Today I jinxed him, but he said it didn't count because I didn't knock on wood. In fact, he said I was the one who was jinxed because he knocked on wood first.
