Quote
Threatened species, like the Canterbury mudfish, have no legal protection in the regulations. There’s nothing stopping somebody catching and eating them on private land, other than the fact they’re probably not good eating. Perhaps odder still, one of our ‘At Risk’ species falls into our fishery industry’s quota management system. Up to 137 tonnes of endemic long-finned eels can be caught each year. Eels only breed once in their lifetime before dying so every eel which makes it to a dinner plate or into a can of pet food, is an eel which has never had a chance to reproduce.

My insomnia has returned for the past two nights. I’m writing out some pet / animal headcanons that are sloshing around in my head right now, just to tire myself out so I can finally sleep. Not sure if that’s a logical solution, but meh.
Cait: isn’t an animal person. She tolerates Dogmeat because he’s Claire’s (Sole’s) pet, and she’d never harm an animal that isn’t trying to kill her, but that’s about it.
Codsworth: is programmed to respect and kindly treat all animals unless they prove to be harmful.
Curie: loves animals. She spoils Dogmeat with treats whenever she travels with Claire. She probably has a soft spot for mole rats from the centuries spent inside Vault 81′s secret vault, even though most of them are hostile. I can definitely see her adopting a baby mole rat that lost its mother and domesticating it.
Danse, I: likes animals but prefers dogs. He bought a dog bowl for Dogmeat when Claire joined the Brotherhood. He kept it full with food and water, in his room, to give Dogmeat a quiet place to retreat during the days they had to leave him behind.
Danse, II: has a dog of his own. When he’s exiled from the Brotherhood, Claire gives him a Rottweiler puppy, so he isn’t completely alone while staying at the bunker. He names the puppy Athena, after the Greek goddess of wisdom and war.
Deacon: loves animals but prefers cats. They’re agile, stealthy creatures, but can also be incredibly clumsy. He probably had a cat when he was a child but hasn’t had another pet since. Loves Dogmeat. He also sneaks the mutt treats when traveling with Claire.
Hancock: probably likes animals more than they like him. I imagine some dogs and cats are wary of ghouls. He’s always enjoyed looking at pictures of and reading about horses. Wishes they weren’t extinct. Sometimes dreams about riding a horse through Goodneighbor.
MacCready: sees the benefits of having a well-trained dog, but pets cost money and MacCready is a frugal bastard. He’s not going to have a pet for himself. It’s a different story if Duncan wants one.
Nick: is also an animal lover. Cats are mesmerized by his glowing eyes and most dogs seem to like him. Pre-war Nick had a cat named Bogart. During the nights Jenny spent over, Bogart would wait until her and Nick were asleep and curl up between them.
Piper: likes animals on a case-by-case basis. She thinks it’s neat to have a pet, but it’s not for her. She’s busy with the paper and raising Nat, and honestly, I think she worries about a pet getting into the ink and ending up with paw prints everywhere.
Preston: is a freakin’ Labrador personified, so of course he loves dogs. He likes all animals, never shoots at an animal unless it’s hostile, and is yet another companion who gives Dogmeat treats. But, out of all the companions, Preston might be Dogmeat’s favorite.
Strong: sees any animal and thinks it should be eaten. (Poor Dogmeat.)
X6-88: only tolerates an animal if it serves some kind of purpose. He doesn’t understand why some humans have animals for companionship, because how can an animal be a reliable ally?
Bonus, Farah (OC): didn’t grow up with a lot of animals inside the Institute. There were lab rats, the synthetic gorillas, and a few dogs and cats. But cats are her favorite. Farah feeds several of the stray cats in Diamond City, and she even built a shelter for them to rest and keep safe from radstorms and thunderstorms.
Bonus, Claire (Sole): grew up in a rural community and was raised to respect all animals. Cows, horses, pigs, goats, chickens, etc. Someone in her hometown even had a herd of alpacas. But while Claire loves all animals, dogs are her favorite. Even with her mom barely making end’s meat, they managed to have a pet in their home. Her childhood dog was a rat terrier / bluetick coonhound mix named Freckles.

☁ (nicola peltz. cisfemale. 21) welcome back to your summer paradise, BRIDGET COLLINS we were wondering when you’d finally show up! the town’s really missed how ALLURING you are, even if you can be a bit MOODY at times. we hear back home they call you the FALLEN ANGEL, makes sense considering you remind everyone of MAKING A SCENE IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE PARTY, A BOTTLE OF VODKA HIDDEN IN A CHANEL CLUTCH, NOT TAKING OUT YOUR HEADPHONES WHEN YOUR MOM’S TALKING TO YOU, & A COLLARBONE STICKING OUT FROM UNDER A SILK SLIP DRESS  [farah/21/pst/she/her] ☁☼☁
hiiii guys! so sorry this is so late, i went to go workout earlier and kind of died bt now im back after a few hours im feeling better & more refreshed!!! anywayS, i can’t wait to write with you all! for those of you who don’t know me, i’m farah, i’m 21, i use she/her pronouns, and im from the pst timezone. you can look at bridget’s pinterest board HERE to get more of her vibe, and if you’d like to plot just hit that like button and i’ll message you.
ok so i took a lot of inspiration from marissa cooper, serena van der woodsen, lux lisbon, and elvira hancock from scarface
grew up in a wealthy community in connecticut with her mom, dad, and younger sister and would summer in the hamptons every year
bridget was your typical “golden girl,” involved in everything, straight a’s honor student, on the tennis team, activities chair, and definitely considered popular in high school
she loved a lot of those things, kind of but her mom was kind of overbearing and always putting a ton of pressure on her and kind of forced her into a lot of it
she never really felt like it was her choice, and that her mom was just controlling her to be this perfect person that she wasn’t really sure she was
her mom was just very controlling of everyone and always pushing her dad and her and her sister to be the best and have the best and really didn’t care about anyone being happy like it was all about their family’s image and success
with all of this on her plate, she was really stressed and was always unconsciously looking for ways to cope, whether that be "forgetting” to eat, smoking cigarettes, and excessive drinking. at first, none of these habits were super pronounced in her lifestyle and no one really noticed anything was wrong
like for example, the last one used to be something she only did on weekends, now it’s an all-the-time kind of thing
it would get so bad that’d she often pass out and her friends would leave her on her driveway, fleeing from trouble, while she’d wake up to her mom freaking out over what she did the night before
those were just two of the warning signs that like maybe things weren’t ok with her??? bt she was still keeping up on all of her after school commitments so no one really said anything
so things were like fine, she was getting more and more unhappy with her life and more and more upset that people weren’t noticing her cries for help bt it was like whatever
she didn’t have anything to be upset about and she lived such a charmed life she honestly felt so guilty for ever being unhappy and this idea just weighed on her more
UNTIL it gets revealed that her dad, who was a financial planner, ended up making some bad investments, used his clients money to try and make up for it, and then went under investigation by the SEC and FBI during her senior year of high school
it was a huge embarrassment and shock to her family, especially to bridget who was super close to her dad and like her only ally in her family since her and her mom did not get along at least not superficially
her mom, who really only cares about money and material things, divorced her dad as soon as she found out and ended up weaseling her way into marrying an older, richer man to avoid losing her house and reputation
this whole thing just launched bridget into a huge downward spiral
she quit all of her commitments, started staying out all night, smoking, drinking, doing anything to piss off her mom and drown out the void her dad had created and continued to party her way through the summer
even though she had previously gotten accepted and made plans to attend brown in the fall, she ended up not returning after her the first year because she’d fallen into even more of a depression there and stopped attending classes and was always caught in the confusion of whether this was what she really wanted or what her mom wanted for her
so since then she’s just been living at home trying to figure her life out but rlly just being a brat and fighting with her mom and her new stepdad and feeling super miserable because she doesn’t know who she is and rlly doesn’t know where to begin to figure that out
she’s just super cynical??? lifeless eyes???? lots of black eyeliner?? detached???? you kno what i mean, she used to have a very good girl aesthetic all pastels and skirts and cardigans, bt now she’s taken 90′s supermodel/studio 54 to a whole new level
oh and after her dad’s legal trouble he left to go live in hawaii to “start a better life” or as she sees it - leaving her with the spawn of satan herself
this has gotten way too long nd i need to stop so a few random headcanons: 90% of her wardrobe is silk slip dresses, she’s now driving (recklessly) a brand new bmw convertible that her mom bought her as a bribe to get her to be nice to her new stepdad who she HATES, you can usually find her in the corner of the party moodily smoking a cigarette or drinking straight from a bottle of vodka, she likes to spend her summer days laying out by the pool and not taking out her headphones when her mom tries to talk to her !
PLOTS: childhood friends, party friends, hook-ups, fwb, exes, an unrequited crush (either way), someone she hates, someone who hates her, a good influence, a bad influence, someone she can relate to with all her issues...i’ll add to this!

Monks says reptiles have a unique problem when it comes to mice. Our temperate weather makes the cold-blooded creatures sluggish, but has little effect on mice. The slow-moving reptiles can be an evening buffet for the mice, who return night-after-night slowly nibbling the reptile to death. “We have no predator control tools to sustainably suppress mice,” she says. Only 3 percent of our reptile and amphibian species are considered safe from extinction. Another 3 percent have already vanished. Ten species teeter on the edge, classed as nationally critical.

TOUGH RULES TO STOP HITCHHIKING BROWN MARMORATED STINK BUG
By Farah Hancock Strict new rules aim to stop a bug which has been hitchhiking its way around the world from wreaking havoc in New Zealand. The rules, proposed by the Ministry for Primary Industries, shift the responsibility for treatment of shipping containers from some countries to try & stop the brown marmorated stink bug from entering New Zealand. The list of countries required to treat goods before export has increased from 18 to 33. All imported cargo relating to vehicles will need to be treated before export. The rules, which could add to the cost of imports & the time it takes for goods to reach New Zealand, largely have the support of industry players. “You’ve got to give it respect. It’s moving its way throughout a lot of countries by just doing what it does, & it’s getting very successful at what it does.” Aspects such as heat treatment temperatures are now aligned between Australia & New Zealand to simplify treatment requirements for exporters. If the bug establishes itself in New Zealand it could cost the country billions, as well as infest homes. They would be able to survive throughout the North Island & in most of the South Island & could decimate horticultural crops. Outside of East Asia where the stink bugs originate they have few predators to keep numbers under control. Its global spread is mainly through transported goods, & it has established itself in the US & Italy. So far, no country has been able to eradicate stink bugs once they’ve established themselves. A group of 10 bugs arriving together could pose a serious threat within two years if let to breed unchecked. This season, 123 live bugs have been found by border staff, with most coming in via ships. MPI manager facilities & pathways Paul Hallett describes the stink bug as a great hitch-hiker. The proposed changes add several European countries to the list of places where treatment is needed before goods can come into New Zealand. “We haven't seen that many [bugs] out of Japan this season because we tidied up the rules & regulations leading into the season. We've seen bugs mostly out of Europe & the US, and it has been in mostly vehicles, machinery like excavators, caravans & trailers.” When the weather cools, the bugs find a place to hunker down. Caravans are a favourite for the bug, with some new Italian caravans parked next to fields before export. “These caravans are in a prime position, in a prime location & have great hidey holes that are nice, secure & warm & suit the bugs quite down to the ground.” Shipping containers from Italy will now need to be treated prior to export which is a change to current rules. The draft proposal points out there’s a risk even opening the containers for inspection in New Zealand runs the risk of live stink bugs escaping. Hallett said as well as reducing risk the rule will speed up processing in New Zealand. There are currently over 190 treatment providers approved in Europe & the US & MPI has been working with providers to educate them of the standards required. “There are not going to be the issues that there are no treatment providers in Slovenia, or Belgium or the Netherlands, because we’ve actually approved providers there.” He said feedback from importers has been mainly about the three- to four-week delay which might occur. “Most importers are okay with the delays because they recognise that we don't want this pest … Some are not given that now some have an extra three or four weeks wait to get their goods.” Ships getting turned away from New Zealand & Australian ports because of infestations increases cost “exponentially” & it's a cost the shipping lines have been carrying. The alignment with Australia, where many ships bound for New Zealand also visit has reduced confusion. "Australia requires heat treatment for instance at 50 degrees for 30 minutes & we require 56 degrees for 30 minutes." Australia has lifted its standard to match New Zealand's. "That means that all these treatment providers in France & Belgium & Germany will only have to memorise one treatment instead of multiple treatments." “At the end of the stink bug season - not being facetious - the stink bug might not know what the date is.” Vehicle Industry Association chief executive David Vinsen said import industry members are supportive of the rules, & are considering sticking to them year-round, not just during the stink bug season of 1 September until 30 April. He said alignment of standards will make life simpler for importers. “It will probably be a higher thresh-hold, but a common standard.” He sees the downside as added time & cost but said by heat-treating year round costs may even out.

Afrofuturism and the Funkification of the Cyborg
by Farah Yusuf
Electronic music technology creates a world of virtual sound, a realm of sonic simulacra detached from any specific moment or site. Electronic instruments were embraced by black musical subcultures from jazz to techno, and, as musicians of the African diaspora began to explore the abstract possibilities of the electronic signal, tropes of space aliens and science fiction accompanied these synthetic, simulated musics. The “African-American signification that appropriates images of technology and a prosthetically enhanced future” is defined broadly across cultural genres as Afrofuturism.[1]   Specific to music, cultural critic Kodwo Eshun describes “AfroDiasporic futurism” as a digital diaspora of  “computer rhythms, machine mythology and conceptechnics which routes and reroutes and criss-crosses the Black Atlantic.”  Afrofuturism realized through electronic music activates a sense of agency through embodied communication of codes.
Afrofuturism is a techno-visionary tradition that negotiates a zone between modern technology, African roots, and prophetic imagination.  The drum was the original African communication technology and, since their arrival on Western shores, black musicians have proved adept at mastering and re-purposing Western instruments and technologies.  Jazz virtuosos Sun Ra and Herbie Hancock were among the first to use a synthesizer in popular music production, liberating it from the domain of white intellectual avant-garde musicians. After years of playing with Miles Davis’ during his electric period, Hancock released the album Sextant (1973) where he used the synthesizer to its full potential, creating and sequencing futuristic space sounds with no earthly instrumental referent. By the mid 1980’s this trajectory would culminate in techno music – a studio music of synthesized sounds; a music where “young black musicians use computer technology to construct a soundtrack to the end of the industrial epoch.”[3]  Juan Atkins named the genre ‘techno’ after the term ‘techno-rebels’ described by Alvin Toffler in the book Future Shock (1970).  Techno-rebels are a group who master technology yet refuse to let it separate them from their past roots or essential humanity.  Afronauts, like techno-rebels, re-mix of those past roots with future technology.
More than just technical mastery, their music is visionary, giving sonic form to feelings of alienation and reclamation.  Music theorist Jacques Attali writes:
Music is prophecy: its styles and economic organization are ahead of the rest of society because it explores, much faster than material reality can, the entire range of possibilities in a given code. It makes audible the new world that will gradually become visible. [4]
The cosmic sounds spawned further cultural codings of futuristic imagery and dress.  The album cover for Sextant pictorially connects space travel to a primitive African past. Herbie Hancock is shown flying a spaceship in his subsequent album Thrust (1974), and on Headhunters (1975) he becomes an alien playing a synthesizer.  Sun Ra weaves an elaborate myth around his Arkestra’s extraterrestrial origin, and George Clinton received the Funk from an alien race. Platform shoes are for walking on the moon, and techno is described by one of its progenitors, Juan Atkins, as music that sounds like a “UFO landed on top of the track.” [5]
Why science fiction and space aliens?  As Donna Haraway so aptly declares, “the boundary between science fiction and social reality is an optical illusion.” [6]  African diasporic peoples were the first aliens, displaced through slavery in the seventeenth century. Black existence and science fiction are one and the same.  Both exemplify the profound experience of cultural dislocation, alienation, and estrangement. Still, the question remains:
Can a community whose past has been deliberately rubbed out, and whose energies have subsequently been consumed by the search for legible traces of its history, imagine possible futures? Furthermore, don’t the technocrats, SF writers, futurologists, set designers, and streamliners—white to a man—who have engineered our collective fantasies already have a lock on that unreal estate?[7]
This question posed by Mark Déry echoes Spivak’s theory of the subaltern, which informs so much of post-colonial discourse.  But, the Afrofuturist alien is like Haraway’s Cyborg in its “power to survive, not on the basis of original innocence, but on the basis of seizing the tools to mark the world that marked them as other.” [8]  Like the Cyborg, it’s power stems from its technologically inspired reconstruction as pure information, or dis-information according to Kodwo Eshun:
Alien continuum operates not through continuities, retentions, genealogies or inheritances but rather through intervals gaps and breaks.  It turns away from its roots; it opposes common sense with the force of the fictional and the power of falsity. […] The alien discontinuum is the rejection of any and all notions of a compulsory black condition. [9]
These metaphorical tropes provide alternative and empowering narratives of creative self-determination.  However, the Afrofuturist transcends the Cyborg when the narratives are encoded through embodied communication.
Music is the medium through which these imaginative forms get inscribed on the social body.  The term ‘funk’ resides at the heart of all Afrofuturist genres of music.  Funk is derived from an African word meaning “positive sweat” and is indicative of an African aesthetic of “communally impassioned engagement” to music. [10]   Sweat also plays a major role in the evolution from Cyborg to the embodied Posthuman.  The cybernetic theory of information, control, and communication rests on an analogy of homeostasis, which is an organism’s ability to regulate its temperature through sweat. [11]  In the posthuman view the informational pattern of knowledge arises as an “epiphenomenon corresponding to the phenomenal base the body provides.” [12]   The music of Afrofuturism is a kind of re-enchantment of the body – “fluidarirty maintained and exacerbated by soundmachines” [13] – politics enacted on the dance floor and culture encoded in the body.
Afrofuturists are revolutionary. They proclaim a powerful message by carving out a unique and hybrid space, alternative to a historical black tradition or postcolonial diasporic condition, where black identity is empowered by science fiction and electronic technology.  As innovators of their craft, they musically demonstrate the ability to achieve this remote possibility. The true subversion of Afrofuturism is the dissemination of its technologically empowered message through mediums that are traditionally the domain of the white man.

Good morning and acceptable to The Bulletin. In today’s edition: Problems looming for acting acceptance holders, accompaniment abode cat-and-mouse account balloons again, and US ban could hit NZ seafood exports.
United States: March Visa Bulletin Update: USCIS to Honor .. | april visa bulletin
There are some absolute problems looming for acting acceptance holders and their employers, with bags set to expire all once, reports Nona Pelletier for Radio NZ. Automatic extensions were accepted until September 25 for those expiring amidst 2 April and 9 July, but at the moment they aren’t actuality accepted above that unless Immigration NZ is absolutely abiding the jobs can’t be abounding by New Zealanders. It’s abnormally annoying for the dairy industry, which is about appealing alive about that time of year, and accomplished workers are adamantine to appear by.
Some non-residents altercate that they’ve been awash out for political affidavit – and it’s adamantine to altercate with that appraisal appropriate now. Newsroom’s Dileepa Fonsecka had a adventure afresh about the position some individuals are in on acting visas – in one person’s case, they’ve been actuality added than bristles years, paid their taxes and all that – and now they’re adverse a massive excess in accepting residency. Federica Benedet said it was “not fair at all”, and “after bristles years and bisected you still feel like you’re aloof acting actuality and you can’t accept any certainty.” Meanwhile, as Fair Go reports, there are alike some acting acceptance holders who got ashore across afterwards awkward trips, and it doesn’t attending acceptable they’ll be able to appear aback in any time soon.
Is there a fair point in the political accommodation to prioritise NZ citizens and residents? Perhaps – as Stuff reported recently, added than 200,000 NZers are now on either the Jobseeker account or the Covid-19 Income Relief Payment. With the additional annular of the allowance subsidy advancing to an end in September, it is still alien aloof how abounding bodies will charge a job. However, appropriate now at atomic there are added bodies abrogation the country than arriving, according to Interest.
Just quickly, a bulletin from The Spinoff’s managing editor Duncan Greive:
“The accession of Covid-19 and lockdown afflicted The Spinoff, transforming our beat to focus on the bigger adventure of our lives, demography a baby aggregation and authoritative it a seven day a anniversary account operation. But it additionally fundamentally afflicted us as a business, too. Prior to the crisis, about 20% of our beat costs were adjourned by our Members. Now, that amount is arctic of 50%. If you’re already a member, amuse apperceive that all at The Spinoff are abundantly beholden for your help. If you’re not, and would like to contribute, please accede accomplishing so – abutment is important to our adeptness to awning the abutting appearance of the crisis, in all its complexity.”

Despite able increases in the cardinal of accompaniment houses actuality built, the waitlist has ballooned out alike further, reports Stuff’s Henry Cooke. It is acceptable that the ahead mentioned fasten in unemployment over the aftermost few months is partly to accusation as well, and grants for emergency cabin stays accept additionally gone up a lot too.
Inevitably, this is additionally a political question, so actuality are the numbers: There are now about 18,000 households on the waitlist, up from 5,844 aback the government was elected. Over that aforementioned period, 3,062 new homes accept been built, compared to 2,670 congenital over the nine years National was in office. The government says the massive admission is partly because of a added affable admission to those in need, while National says it shows the government has bootless to accumulate clip with demand.
A ban on sales of NZ seafood in the US could be close, reports Farah Hancock for Newsroom. That’s because of cloister activity brought by Sea Shepherd, on the breadth of declining to assure Māui dolphins. The adjudicator audition the case has anatomy as well, accepting previously granted a basic admonition banning seafood imports from the breadth in Mexico – that case accompanying to a animal declared the vaquita porpoise. Meanwhile, some of the beyond fishing operators in New Zealand accept declared a new alertness to get cameras on lath boats, reports Radio NZ.
An abnormal anatomy of automated altercation is demography abode in nursing at the moment, reports Stuff’s Libby Wilson. There’s a pay gap aural the profession, with convenance nurses authoritative beneath than their DHB alive counterparts already they ability a assertive akin of experience. What makes it abnormal is that administration appetite to action according pay it’s aloof they don’t accept the government allotment to do so. A stop-work affair will be demography abode on July 23 for two hours.
Hundreds of businesses are actuality audited afterwards claiming the allowance subsidy, reports One News. They’re the ones that accept faced complaints for claiming it beneath apocryphal pretences, and for the absolutely arrant breaches bent accuse are possible. The names of businesses actuality audited aren’t allotment of the story, for accessible aloofness reasons. However, $200 actor has now been repaid, which suggests that affluence of organisations that didn’t charge it in the end accept done the appropriate thing.

The assay into the apparent aperture of alive Covid-19 case abstracts will be quick, says Accompaniment Services (and basically aggregate abroad too) abbot Chris Hipkins. One News reports that Michael Heron QC has been tasked with adventure the investigation, and is accepted to address aback by the end of the month. Heron will accept admiral to get abstracts and put bodies beneath oath, and will be asked to analyze if annihilation should be afflicted to anticipate approaching advice breaches.
Few publications are accomplishing bounded government account as able-bodied as the ODT, so here’s a brace of belief from their corresponding councils. The first relates to a continued action from the cardboard to get admission to the Dunedin City Council’s book on councillor Lee Vandervis, who has now clocked up as abounding as 27 declared incidents of blowing or contrarily verbally calumniating behaviour. And the second concerns the accessible Regional Council action over whether Marian Hobbs will abide as armchair – that’s advancing up for a vote at an amazing affair on Wednesday.
A bit of media news: Stuff, the country’s bigger account platform, has absitively to stop announcement annihilation on Facebook until added notice, amidst a all-around attack to avoid the amusing media platform. The move wasn’t formally appear as such – the account came to us at The Spinoff because addition at Stuff leaked us an centralized email about it. It’s a cogent moment in the advancing astriction amidst account publishers and Facebook, which has now been cavernous abroad for years. Former media executive Hal Crawford has accounting an assay of both the allegorical accent of the move, and whether it is acceptable to last.

Right now on The Spinoff: To alpha with, we’ve got two competing pieces bouncing off the contempo Clare Curran interview, about the awful ability of aldermanic politics. Dr Jess Berentson-Shaw argues it is unnecessary, and could be actual altered if the arrangement was advised to reflect bigger values. In contrast Danyl Mclauchlan argues that the animality politicians administer on anniversary added acts as a all-important analysis on tyranny, bribery and incompetence. Both are account reading, in my opinion.
In added news: Kris Gledhill explains the sentencing action for the Christchurch abbey shooter. The Fold podcast meets Multicultural Times editor Guarav Sharma to allocution about whether media serves casual communities. Steven Moe looks at XCHC, a popular artistic hub in Christchurch. University of Otago law lecturer Marcelo Rodriguez Ferrere writes about the low accessible contour of NZ judges, and why that ability absolutely be a acceptable thing. And Josie Adams talks to The Beths about the development of their lockdown alive sessions, which were great.
It’s consistently nice to see one of your favourite writers get best up by addition aperture aback their aboriginal advertisement goes down. So for a affection today, an accomplished Jane Clifton cavalcade on Business Desk (paywalled) that looks at an blighted forestry bill, which aims to get abounding added logs candy domestically. It’s bright that there’s added that could be done on value-adding in this sector, but it’s abundant beneath bright if this is the answer. Here’s an excerpt:
In a attenuate moment of accord against an NZ First project, Green MP Chloe Swarbrick championed the aim of accepting added value-added calm copse processing during the bill’s additional account on Tuesday. But neither she nor a adroit advance of added government speakers alike attempted to explain how the bill ability accompany this about.
Even the Opposition, beside itself at this attack to blackmail the chargeless market, chock-full abbreviate of adage the bill had fangs. It almost has gums. Still, National MPs abreast accede that admitting it’s one of our top consign earners, the log barter is a abiding archetype of absent opportunity.

It appears the able rugby players of the country aren’t absolutely blessed with the new All Blacks apprenticeship lineup. That comes from a analysis appear on by the NZ Herald, and conducted by NZME sports ambassador Sam Casey. Added than 100 Super Rugby players took allotment in the bearding survey, with alone 28% adage they were absolutely blessed with the selections. For context, players were additionally asked who the best drillmaster they’d anytime had is – there was a advanced array in responses, but Scott Robertson and Tony Brown both got a appropriate share.

1080 is used to control pests in NZ. Its use is contested by a noisy few. A new report claims high levels of 1080 in rats washed up on a beach. Flora and Fauna of Aotearoa (F&F) won’t name the laboratory that did their testing. It has sparked a hunt for the mystery 1080 testing lab. It’s just the sort of thing my readers might spend some idle time on Sunday searching for clues. Whodunnit?
Readers can tackle Farah Hancock’s and Dave Hansford’s coverage (published in that order), and the Science Media Centre’s Expert Reaction report for background. You can also read the report itself (PDF file; obtained from a link in the SMC Expert Reaction report). Let us know what you think!
F&F spokeswoman Di Maxwell claimed to Dave Hansford their tester previously recieved a “bullet in the mail” and “vandalism”. There’s a media story about a previous chemical “testing” incident reporting the tester making the same claim. Let’s call that person Dr. Y. Dr. Y’s earlier case, like the recent one, is associated with environmental groups, and claims excessively high levels of a substance. Investigations at the time met a refusal to share the methods used, and the laboratory – similar to what F&F are doing now.
My lead is speculative, with all that goes with that. It could be completely off. Rather than expand on it, I’d like to close this piece by drawing attention to how these “science-y” presentations affect issues and invite ideas as how to move groups past this. They’re an odd form of showmanship that really isn’t helpful.
But first let’s run back over the story so far a little. It’s quite a tale.
Where, who and what
On North Beach near Westport on the West Coast of the South Island 680 animals were found dead. Tests by Landcare NZ found no 1080 residues in the rats, and examination of the bodies by Massey University haven’t identified a cause of death.
F&F published what they claim are laboratory tests showing animals from the beach have enormous amounts of 1080 residue in them. To scientists, however, their document raises more questions than answers.
F&F heavily promote that their lab is accredited, but toxicologists say the chemistry doesn’t add up. Cridge and Shaw (SMC report) note stomach tissue is not expected to have high levels of fluorocitrate.
Dave Hansford concluded, “the question being asked in the profession is whether the mystery report is anything more than a work of lurid fiction”.
F&F spokeswoman Maxwell said to Hansford that the tester, “[…] had his house vandalised, he had a bullet through the mail. I could go on and on.”
How many claims of a bullet in the mail and vandalism to someone (claiming to) work at a chemical testing laboratory in work linked to environmental groups are there in New Zealand?
You’d think there wouldn’t be many. Perhaps only one.
It’s easy to find a media account of one case. (Tip: you can limit Google search results to NZ sites by adding ‘site:.nz’.) For your whodunnit, however, there are a few catches.
Many small consistencies and parallels make Dr. Y an appealing candidate to be F&F’s tester, but other claims by F&F don’t match – at least on the face of it.
Hiding the laboratory
F&F say they outsourced to a large (3,000m2!) laboratory, with overseas sites and other details (2 links). Where is the laboratory? There are only a small number of labs approved for fluoracetate testing in NZ. (As for the Dr. Y option, as far as I know he never revealed his lab. Perhaps Sherlock would suggest keeping embellishment open as a possibility?)
Maxwell says she must hide the laboratory, “for the security and safety of the independent chemists involved”. F&F claim, “This is a whistleblower situation” and that, “They have been attacked for standing up before” (as Dr. Y’s claims).
The real question, I believe, is if they need protection for this event. I’m doubtful. It’s a bit hard to see where there is an axe to grind.
Online consensus seems to be this event is nature at work after a big storm. Rats drowning (perhaps especially those that live by riverbanks or in otherwise dry river beds), and some sea-life washing ashore. West Coast rivers in flood are an impressive sight. Nearby is Cape Foulwind, not named by accident. Fans of Occam’s Razor would suggest it’s the simpler and hence more likely idea. (But that’s not enough on it’s own.)
Besides, as Hansford wrote,
You’d think a laboratory that had succeeded where Landcare and Massey had allegedly failed might be keen to burnish its reputation in a competitive field, but no: despite persistent requests, F&F refused to divulge its identity “for the security and safety of the independent chemists involved”, and warned that anyone who asked for it would be summarily removed from its Facebook page.
This reads as the over-played thinking and heavy-handed control seen by groups opposed to “contested” topics on social media.
Getting lobbies to do better
Using the language of science dubious claims can be pushed as issues needing attention. This game of ‘scientific bluff’ can be a kind of showmanship that is deeply unhelpful.
I’ve seen this game of imitating science elsewhere, on other issues. For example, there are commissioned studies of vaccines and genetic modification that look—to be very kind—a mess.
These reports don’t convince scientists working in the field, but they can affect politics. They also force a need to “tear down” the facade of “science-y” claims erected. Aside from the effort that takes, I suspect addressing the claims leaves the lobbies feeling beseiged, even it’s ultimately at their own hand, and they then dig in.
Those opposed might well mean their efforts sincerely, within their limitations. It might stem in part from a mistrust of the institutions. F&F’s Facebook posts show elements of this.
How do we ask lobbies to lift their game and not play at this sort of thing? Do we, even?
Where the issue is properly not a science issue—as in many objections to GMOs are, for example—encouraging people to talk in terms of their non-science objections may help. In not giving ‘value’ issues space, perhaps it’s inevitable there’s more science-bluff? People perceive they’re heard if they make it “scientific”.
But what do you do when the issue is squarely a science one? I’m not sure I know the answer.
Perhaps we could offer visitor passes to witness the testing? The idea being that it might it might reassure them of the professionalism and care that the testing is done with. I can’t see this working for F&F if the tone of their Facebook posts are representative, but maybe for other groups.
Ideas welcome – the comments are open.

Footnotes
As I write F&F are pushing more out. By withholding details needed to resolve their claims, they can rark them up. You’d wish they’d realise how insincere that looks to others, and the extent to which that lowers the judgement of their tests. (You’d also wish they’d see they’d do better by working with people rather than be combative. Humans are a mess sometimes.)
On their Facebook page F&F are both claiming there is a laboratory, but at the same time not saying what it is. Obviously that doesn’t engender confidence in their claim. Similarly unconvincing is F&F’s selective quoting of Shaw’s questions about DoC testing that leaves out his must stronger criticism of their own testing. Likewise, claiming to “want an open and transparent dialogue about the Government poison testing policies”, but not providing the same of their own testing doesn’t look equitable.
There’s more, but I’ll leave you to it!
I’m available (internationally) for writing on biological topics, particularly those related to genetics and molecular biology such as gene editing, GMOs, gene therapy.

Five Random Facts: + Claire knows what it’s like to be poor. Not the rich man’s definition of poor, but the “I duct-taped the bottom of my backpack because my family can’t spare the money to buy a new one, stop laughing at me” kind of poor. The “I live in a trailer park and my classmates call me white trash” poor. Or the “I joined the army because all the jobs in my town disappeared when the oil rigs shut down” poor.
+ While Claire embraces her mother’s and abuela’s Mexican heritage more than her father’s Irish heritage, she’s well aware she benefited from her Irish looks. Strangers from before the war never yelled at her to go back to Mexico, or call her lazy, or accuse her of stealing their jobs. Whereas the two women she loved and respected more than anyone were targets of such hate; they worked jobs no one else wanted, worked hard, and were legal American citizens.
+ She met her late husband in Anchorage. Nate was a surgeon stationed at the army hospital and Claire was one of the patients. He was the one who operated on her ear. They met again years later when both of them had moved to New England.
+ Claire hates killing feral ghouls because she knows they were once people, and they were most likely people she used to know. Friends, neighbors, co-workers, the mailwoman, the sweet cashier at her favorite store, etc. She knows they’re a threat to everyone, and killing them can also be seen as an act of kindness, but it’ll never sit well with her.
+ She’s excellent at making people feel comfortable enough to open up to her. It’s an innate talent that helped her when she was a lawyer, since many of her clients were abuse victims. Present day, it helps her when talking with scared settlers and synths, or when investigating cases with Nick. She’d make a great spy, too, but she’s too recognizable nowadays.

‘TAPI gas line to be completed on time’
ISLAMABAD: Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources is confident it would complete the multi-billion dollars Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project as per schedule - December 2020.
"The project entered its practical phase in Pakistan after the process of initiating front-end-engineering-and-design (FEED) route survey was formally inaugurated in March this year," official sources in the ministry told APP.
Under the project, they said, a 56-inch diameter 1,680 kilometre pipeline, having capacity to flow 3.2 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) gas, would be laid from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan up to the Pak-India border.
They expressed confidence that the project would be completed in time and within the cost, and would help meet energy requirements of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. During the last two years, the sources said significant developments had taken place for the smooth and timely execution of the project.
They acknowledged the role of the Turkmen president and government in initiating the practical work. Terming the project crucial, the sources said Pakistan was in dire need of gas, and was meeting its domestic needs through import of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for the last two years.
They said under the project, Pakistan and India would get 1.325bcfd gas each, while Afghanistan would be provided 0.5bcfd gas.

LAHORE: Both local and foreign investment scenarios in Pakistan needs improvement through facilitation, as existing investment does not match the potential of this country.
These views were expressed by LCCI president Abdul Basit, while talking to the additional secretary Board of Investment Shahjahan Shah at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday.
Foreign direct investment, excluding privatisation proceeds has fallen to $1,601.6 million during July-March 2016/17 from $5,276.6 million in 2007/08.

‘Workers welfare benefits to be paid’
News Desk
KARACHI: The Sindh Workers Welfare Board is releasing Rs500 million to workers under death, dowry grants and other workers' welfare-oriented benefits, a statement said.
This is the first tranche of the Rs1 billion released by SWWB that has been formed after the 18th Amendment, it added. The employers are contributing two percent of their profit under this head. Majyd Aziz, president of the Employers Federation of Pakistan, said this on the Labour Day function held at the Sindh Chief Minister House.
Aziz said that in the SWWB governing body, the employers have only three nominees in the 16-member board, despite the fact that the total contributions are from employers. He suggested that employers and workers should have major representation and that the chairmanship should be rotated between employers and workers instead of the government. He advised the Sindh government should consult EFP before nominating employers' representatives on the board.
  Canadian exports to jump 6pc
OTTAWA: Strong commodity prices mean the value of Canadian goods exports will jump 6 percent in 2017 after a drop last year, Canada´s export credit agency said on Tuesday, playing down possible disruption to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
In its semi-annual forecast, Export Development Canada predicted exporters should benefit this year from a stronger U.S. economy and a weak Canadian dollar.
Canada sends 75 percent of all goods exports to the United States. Those exports shrank by 2.6 percent in 2016, pulled down in part by lower prices for a wide range of goods, including a 17.1 percent drop in energy.
