Where do you get your short pile fur type fabric for plushies? I've never been able to fond a decent place that doesn't make you buy like 20 yards at a time.

Which one specifically? I'm in the UK so that's where most of my suppliers are. The printed stuff is called "Short Velvet" and I get it printed through a company called Woven Monkey. The faux fur I use is from Mohair Bear Making Supplies, Swincraft2 on Ebay, and Linda's Wholesale on Aliexpress and this one specific website for 10mm faux fur (I don't recommend the black but the others are nice). I've also just collected a bunch over the years. For Short Minky I recommend Hopen on Aliexpress!

I've finally got the creative bug in me again, which is nice. It has been so long and I've literally cried about not having the motivation to working on all my abandoned projects. I'm very slowly making progress on what should eventually be some costumes. on a run for somethings I needed I stopped by Joann Fabrics to see what they have in stock and they wanted FIFTY fucking dollars per yard for plain white faux fur. Plain White Faux Fur....Uh no. I can buy it for half as much if not cheaper plus shipping online from just about any old fabric supplier that carries faux fur. Maybe in the far, far future of I dunno ... 202--9? I'll have a costume done.

YES! i'm so excited about this one. i'm writing it as a challenge because i simply can't write short fics for my life, but this one is supposed to be a one-shot. it's a get-together, sort of rivals-to-lovers fic! marlene and dorcas meet at a thrift shop and are fighting for the same rare vivienne westwood vintage jacket. here's a little meet-cute:

Between stuffed racks and unimpressive clothing, Marlene is starting to think this thrift trip isn’t going to be the one to hit the jackpot, which is disappointing, considering that she drove for four hours to get to this gentrified-ass neighborhood in another fucking state. This was supposed to be the shop of the moment, the best damn thrift shop in the country, according to Sirius - and he knows his suppliers. The guy is a vintage clothing sniffer dog; she’ll give him that.

So, yeah. It isn’t very reassuring, to say the least. Marlene goes through another coat rack when something interesting catches her eye, like a treasure hidden in a cave. She leaves a plain faux fur trench coat back where it belongs and quickly walks to the next aisle, where an embroidered sleeve is poking out in between two ugly puffer jackets.

And there it is, the perfect embroidered jacket with broken heart-shaped patterns and little shiny beaded bones. Marlene lets her fingers feel the resistant but soft fabric, delicately tracing the seam in search of imperfections. She finds none.

Marlene reaches for the tag on the inside, and yes. Fucking yes. It is a Vivienne Westwood piece. This is going to sell for thousands. Jackpot.

Before she can take the piece out of the rack, someone tugs at it from the other side.

“Hell, no! I was here first,” she informs sassily, tugging back.

“Excuse you,” the person retorts, still hidden behind the massive amount of clothing; their voice is sweet, unlike the snark hidden in their words. “I was here first. You just came down the aisle. The jacket is mine.”

They pull it back, and that’s the last straw. “Over my dead body!” Marlene shoves her arms between the clothes and angrily pushes them aside to face the person with the guts to ransack her found treasure.

When eyes meet, Marlene can’t help but suck in a sharp breath. Of course, they are beautiful. A fucking handsome pirate. Deep brown skin, long dreadlocks styled in an impressive updo, pouty lips, and gorgeous brown doe eyes. 

Oh, she’s going to lose this battle.

The fabric supplier was out of the grape long-pile faux fur, so I ended up ordering silver instead, and I’ll have to dye it to both the medium and the dark shade.  Which, on the one hand means I have more control over the colors, but on the other hand means having to dye most of my fabric.

The Roses and thorn's tailor shop was first founded by Harold as just an incredibly small market stall where he simply sold items made within his hope. Simple things like button up shirts and cheaply made jackets. It could hold itself and was priced fairly cheap for humble beginnings though still not to a point he personally felt satisfied with. Though working like this was enough to gain money were the quality could gradually improve over time leading up to the first building being purchased.

The first location was still rather small but was located within the main shopping district and properly organised with much more on offer. During this time, the tailor shop remained just a boutique with designs he had made and he kept to having just two employees at that point given the cost to keep the shop open and still keep some quality with everything. It remained in some sort of limbo with just barely remaining open up until he at least made a couple attempts at offering tailoring to fix clothes that did not fit people properly. It was much cheaper on his side to undertake as there wasn't much need for extra fabric in extreme amounts. Some time following that came custom fabrics which took a much shorter amount of time to master.

During the fifth year of operating the business, he had decided to move to a much bigger location were his true nature running the store started to come into play. The shop offered high quality of varying prices along with custom designs at a range of prices, custom fabrics and tailoring clothing to fit better. And that alone should have been enough given it had built him quite a pleasant reputation along with the perceived friendly attitude. Though whilst the shop is viewed positively and as quite a helpful place where he pays his employees well, he acts behind the scenes quite strangely. The fur coats are often sourced poorly. He does make more with faux fur of quality that is indistinguishable from real fur which he uses the order receipts for that fur type to falsify his real fur orders if needed. It all depends on if he can actually get faux fur or not. Deadlines not being shifted are more important for him.

Faux Fur Fabric

This imitation fur has had immense popularity since its inception within the 1920s, what with animal activists raising cudgels against the cruelty and danger of using real fur and therefore the many public awareness campaigns administered by animal lovers (like Anti-Fur Trade Movement) pointing to pretend fur as a far better option and lots of more people choosing this as a budget-friendly option.

So on to the facts on Faux Fur that I promised ( warning – they're not earth-shattering, but may cause you to think)

Faux fur is formed of synthetic fibers. there's nothing natural about it – not the yarn, the fiber or the material . Synthetic fibers are made to seem exactly just like the real fur. it's Acrylic or Modacrylic on polyester base – Completely artificial and man-made.

Sometimes real fur and faux fur can cost an equivalent . Fur Farms in developing nations make this possible. But people object to Fur for moral reasons. brooding about the foxes, rabbits, minks, raccoons, dogs that are killed deliberately for creating that specific hat or coat should deter you, not the value . there'll be many such animals killed in fur farms if wearing fur isn't frowned upon. Wearing fur is encouraging and abetting this mass slaughter; it's not the status symbol it once was, but shame on your conscience.

Even PETA website acknowledges that it's difficult to differentiate fur from fake fur. But there are ways. I examine this on the PETA website here. watching the rear of the fur may be a thanks to tell whether you've got fur or fake fur – see if the fluff is attached to skin or a knit fabric/webbing. If it's attached to fabric it's fake fur. See the image above. you'll also use a cloth burn test – if the fiber when burnt smells synthetic it's fake. If it smells like burning hair it's fur. you are doing not even need to buy fur in ignorance.

You cannot mark on the fur side. you'll mark on the rear of the faux fur then cut. As you cut, cut only through the backing/webbing/knit fabric. don't cut the fur. Also, make sure that the fur isn't within the way – you'll accidentally stop the fur ends – no do. Keep the fur to the within as you narrow . you'll avoid this by making small snips and being careful all the way, instead of taking long cuts and regretting later.  Faux fur fabric suppliers

To keep many layers of cloth you'll usually use pins – but with thick fake fur this might end in the material pieces distorting – you'll use paper clips instead. Before you sew, keep the pile down together with your fingers – make sure that you're not stitching over the fur unnecessarily; this is often where clips come of use. Use generously. Keep the fur out of the way of sewing where necessary – but don't be too zealous that you simply are distorting the way the pile lays. If the pile is just too long, trim them to form way for your stitching.

How to look after fake fur

The main issues around fake fur is that the matting of the pile, and lack of luster and shrinkage and loss of volume. These are all consequent to wrong washing. it's better to not give the fake fur for cleaning because the solvents used may cause discoloration and distortion of the pile.

The best option is to use gentle hand washing and low to no heat drying, that too if the item gets too dirty. Otherwise it's better to go away it alone. Do let the material sit in water for long – choose the shortest wash cycle possible in your machine.

Always Remember that faux fur is plastic and an excessive amount of heat can damage the fibers. So tumble drying is out of question. If there's heat the fur will start to shrivel. you'll use a coffee heat hand blower to dry the item. Drying during a very low or no heat setting can fluff the pile which has matted. Use a mild hair brush to brush the pile while still damp can bring the pile to behave. This prevents the tufting of fibers because it dries. Faux fur fabric manufacturers

Buying Faux Fur Swatches

What to look for when buying swatches and choosing fur.

There are lots of great resources to buy fur available online! It can be difficult to hunt fabric stores for faux fur, especially outside of fall/halloween/winter seasons. So online shopping is a way to build fursuit and costumes with fur any time of the year! 

The trick to it is buying a swatch first so you know what you are getting! A swatch is a small sample of the fur fabric that the company selling the fabric will mail to you for a small fee. Swatches are usually around $1 - $5 each, don’t skimp on the swatches! For each color you plan, its smart to get a few swatches to compare. They are invaluable in terms of knowing what the color looks like in different lighting conditions, how it feels, how it moves, and how it shaves. Asking other artists opinions just isn’t the same!

I keep this supplier list updated as I find more! 

Most Online fabric stores make it obvious how to get their samples, but some less-so. You may need to use their search, or simply ask! 

Some sites have swatch collections you can purchase as well, such as Big Z, it offers “color cards” which includes all the colors that type of fabric comes in!

If you are collecting samples offline (from a physical fabric store) the store might not allow swatches to be cut and you may need to buy an entire strip of the minimum cut of that fabric. Ask what the smallest amount to be cut is, it might be a few inches! Your swatch will be a strip instead, but you can cut it to a manageable size later and share the extra swatches with friends.

How do I examine a swatch?

When you buy fur, its not about “the softest” – it is literally what works best with the project you are creating. And everyone’s projects are different with different goals!

Some furs are sparse and flowy with mesh backings and those are incredibly awesome for all over a body/chest to help the wearer stay cool, while they are totally terrible for shaving. Others may be extremely thick and plush, but awful for wearing because of how heavy they are. Some feel “crispy” in your hand, but have a realistic look and are extremely durable and will look good for a long time. Some are different textures, but they are the colors you need.

Its all a careful balance of the search for the texture you want, or the color match you are after. For sure the fursuit maker’s struggle.

I like to mix textures and fur lengths because it adds interest to a costume’s design. Once I receive an order of swatches in, I examine them, take them into the sunlight and indoors light. I also match them up with existing swatches in my collection. As well as see how stretchy they are or aren’t. Then I break out my electric shaver, and see how it shaves. Sometimes it reveals a different colored undercoat, a spotted or patterned backing, or a sparse arrangement of fur, those aren’t ideal for shaving unless it works with your particular project. Definitely use a slicker brush on the shaved and unshaved portions to make sure the fur stays in the backing under normal maintenance.

Determine how much stretch the fabric swatch has. This will tell you if you need to make a dart or if it will fill out on its own just by being stuffed or stretched into shape over foam. Hold a swatch of fabric you plan to use like on the Left, it can be at any angle that would match your project you are patterning. Make sure the fabric is relaxed.

Now pinch it between your fingers and stretch it apart, like on the Right. That measurement between your two fingers is the amount of stretch your fabric does or doesn’t have.

The distance you can measure is how much leeway you have to stretch your pattern to fit. If your swatch doesn’t stretch at all, or doesn’t have a stretch from the angle you are planning to put it at, you can then add a dart to your pattern.

Regarding backings, some are stretchy, some are not. Some have a smooth texture, some are different than others, and that is all completely OK. You are going to want to be wearing underarmor or athletic underclothes while wearing fullbody fur costumes like fursuits anyways, so if a backing is “scratchy” that doesn’t make that fur un-useful in any given project.

You will find a lot of the common furs made by a manufacturer called “Shannon Fabrics” they distribute it to all of the resellers. A lot of those furs are the same colors and textures, but sold under different color and texture names. Its up to the individual website on how they brand and sell them. For example “Luxury Shag” and “Punky Muppet” are the same thing.

When you are ready to buy, measure your patterns so you know how much you need. It is very easy to be tempted to overbuy, and I try to discourage it because it can be difficult to store and re-sell fur remnants. (Photographing, measuring, pricing and listing. Taking payment, then boxing and mailing. Its a very involved process) You may still end up with a bit extra (for repairs or mistakes) because online fabric stores often sell in whole or half yard increments only. Here is a summary of what you can do with a swatch of faux fur:

Think about your project goals. Is your project based in natural colors or fantasy colors? What works best for the project you are creating?

Take it into the sun and indoors to see it in different lighting conditions.

Match them against other swatches you have to compare texture, density, or length.

Check stretch (this can immensely help you when plan darts in your pattern)

Check what it looks like trimmed or shaved.

Use a slicker brush and brush it to see if it stays under normal maintenance.

See if it unravels or runs easily when you pick at the edges. 

Shake it! See how that fur moves and lays.

Test it! Cut that swatch in half and use one part of it for a washing test or other test! Keep half as a “control” and test the other half!

How should I label my swatches?

When your samples arrive, they often come with the invoice that tells you what you ordered. But it is extremely easy for this invoice to get tossed or separated and the swatches kept instead, that info now lost. So labeling your swatches clearly and as soon as you get them becomes more important than ever. Here are ways you can label your swatches and information to include.

Label the month and the year you acquired it “July 2019″ -- this is important!! As dye lots can and will change over time, knowing what time period your fabric’s dye lot was created from can help. If your swatch is more than a year old, you want to know so you can get a new swatch in case the color changed!

Label the color and type that it was named where you ordered it. Examples “Mint Rabbit” “White Arctic fox” “Emerald Long Ecoshag”

Label the website name it came from. Examples “Imstuffedfur” “Mendels” “Big Z”

Label the project or character’s name you plan to use it with or have used it on in the past. This is optional, but can help sometimes it’s easier to remember “Matrices Grey” or “Bonk Mint.” Naming by project sticks more strongly in memory, especially when you come back to use that fur, or think about that swatch again!

When it comes to actually sticking a label on your swatches, you can do so by writing on the swatch in pen, stapling a small paper label to your swatch with this info, or writing it on a label sticker and sticking it to the backing!

How should I store or organize my swatches?

Storing swatches can sometimes be an afterthought. But if you plan on making lots of projects with fur, storing and organizing swatches becomes more important as more of them are collected. 

Here’s some creative ideas and solutions that are useful, especially if you are low on space but want to stay organized. 

Attach them to cardstock with staples or double-sided tape. 

Use a binder with plastic sleeve inserts to tuck them in so they can be put away on a shelf.

Use a cork board and pin them up on the board so they can be stored hanging up.

Put a small hole in each swatch, and use a metal ring or carabiner to string them together so they can be stored in a drawer or hanging up.

Clip them together with clothespins to hang them up.

Mistakes I made while building a fursuit that you shouldn’t have to make

I haven’t yet completed this suit and there is still a lot to be done, but for the benefit of others, I’ve decided to document some of the mistakes I’ve made, some of the issues I’ve encountered and some tips I have to share. I’m doing so in the hopes that this will help someone else avoid some seriously frustrating issues.

You probably don’t want ivory colored fur

Ivory fur doesn’t look like natural white fur up close, it looks like dirty white fur.

It might look more natural in online fabric store photos, but you probably want white fur and not ivory fur. The only exception to this rule would be if you’re building something with naturally ivory colored fur such as a polar bear. I know it can be hard to resist just going ahead and buying it, but If you find yourself tempted:

Order swatches

Even if shipping is expensive. I wish I did this. When I started working on this suit, I struggled to find places that sold faux fur in Canada. I eventually found a US based supplier that was able to ship to Canada, but, shipping was expensive and I didn’t have much time. I decided to simply get all of my fur in one order without ordering swatches despite the risks and it was a huge mistake!

This is probably one of my biggest regrets. I ended up ordering ivory fur because it looked better on my monitor than the white fur. It does not, however, look better on a fursuit and I really wish I stuck to the white fur.

Pattern both sides of your fursuit head

Some online tutorials will have you believe that you can pattern one half of your fursuit head and simply flip the pattern over for the pieces of fur for the opposite side. Don’t do it! Some people might be able to pull it off, but unless you’re already very experienced at fursuit making, it’s probably not a good idea. Even minor asymmetry can have a big impact on on the fitment of the fur and cause it to not fit correctly. I had to discard my mostly completed facial fur and completely redo it as a result of this, wasting several hours of time and a great deal of material.

Be careful with the vacuum

The vacuum cleaner is a great way to remove stray fibers from fur after shaving. Unfortunately, it’s also a great way to remove your entire work piece if you’re not careful! Small pieces of fur can easily get sucked up by the vacuum and this can be quite a frustrating experience after spending a great deal of time shaving down a piece of fur.

I eventually got so frustrated with this that I designed a mesh cover for my vacuum to prevent this from happening. If you have access to a 3D printer, I highly recommend printing one as well.

Try a variety of marking and cutting tools

When building a suit, much of your time is going to be spent marking and cutting fur. Every maker has their own favorite methods for cutting fur, so it’s worth trying a few different tools and techniques to see what works best for you. I’ve been using a very sharp craft knife (similar to a scalpel) to cut the backing of the fur, because that’s what I’ve found to work best for me. Some makers prefer to use utility knives and others prefer to use scissors. I struggled with using a utility knife for a great deal of time because that was the tool recommended by most of the tutorials I looked at. I really wish I had tried using a craft knife earlier, though as I found it to be much more accurate and easier to use.

Use the tools available to you

Use your printer to make templates, stencils and patterns. If you have access to a 3D printer, use it. I used a 3D printer to print the eyes and nose on this head. It’s easy to lose paper patterns and templates, so having digital versions of them could save you some frustration in the future.

However, you don’t have access to these tools, don’t let that stop you! You absolutely can build a suit using simple hand tools and do not need need to buy a 3D printer or even a sewing machine (though it is recommended). I’ve probably stitched more of my suit by hand than I’ve machine sewn at this point, so you can definitely get by with just hand stitching.

You’re going to make mistakes

I made a lot of them. Don’t get discouraged. If you mess up some part of your suit, you can always try it again! It’s okay to take extended breaks if you need to or go back and do some more research on how to make a particular part.
