The old bar is next to full, sweaty patrons bumping shoulders at the counter to get their drinks. Brianne and Hayes find themselves alone at their chosen table, the creator of their meetup making space for herself to get a round for the table. Conversation stutters along, Hayes being the main culprit.

He puts his feet up, granules of sand falling from his bare skin onto the wooden table. He leans back, hands locked behind his head. This is absurd, Hayes thinks. There's no way Brianne's pain tolerance is as high as his.

"It's just nature, baby. Women can't take pain as well as men can." Hayes ignores his own memory, specifically every time he's yelped because of a bug bite. "I mean, look at childbirth. 'F men had to do it, we'd be in and out in an hour. At most." Gaze drifts to Eden's empty chair. If we're being technical, she counts as a woman. Yet Hayes doubts she can feel any pain at all. It makes more sense that her little grunts while getting stitched up are fake.
