Het advocatenleger van Felipe Massa heeft de FIA en het Formula One Management (FOM) meer tijd gegeven om het onderzoek naar de zaak rondom het wereldkampioenschap van 2008 af te ronden. De deadline is verschoven van 12 oktober naar 15 november. In 2008 vond één van de grootste schandalen uit de geschiedenis van de Formule 1 plaats: Crashgate. Nelson Piquet Junior hing zijn Renault bewust in de muur, waardoor teammaat Fernando Alonso de race kon winnen. Het schandaal kwam pas een jaar later aan het licht, waardoor het niet meer mogelijk leek om in te grijpen. Ecclestone deed in maart van dit jaar echter uit de doeken dat hij en toenmalig FIA-president Max Mosley al tijdens het seizoen van 2008 op de hoogte waren gebracht van de list. Massa is nu van mening dat - omdat Ecclestone en Mosley destijds al op de hoogte waren - de race uit het 2008-seizoen geschrapt had moeten worden. In dat geval zou de Braziliaan wereldkampioen zijn geworden in plaats van Hamilton. Massa en zijn advocaten zijn van mening dat hij hierdoor tientallen miljoenen euro's is misgelopen en reputatieschade heeft opgelopen. Middels een verplichte letter of claim lieten zij de FIA en de FOM weten dat als er voor 12 oktober geen antwoord zou komen op de ten laste legging, de zaak naar het Britse hooggerechtshof zou gaan. Die deadline is nu verplaatst naar 15 november, zo meldt Motorsport.com.

Felipe Massa lijkt er met zijn juridische team geen gras over te laten groeien. Zoals alom bekend is de Braziliaan bereidt juridische stappen te zetten wegens het verloop van het seizoen 2008 en de titel van Lewis Hamilton, maar de FOM en FIA lijken wellicht na volgende week al voor de rechter te moeten verschijnen als ze niet voldoen aan een deadline. Eerder deze maand besloot Massa met zijn advocaten een brief te sturen richting de FIA en FOM. Daarin stond dat er een verplichte stap in de juridische procedure was gezet: de zogenaamde Letter Before Claim. De FIA zou nu, een behoorlijke tijd na de eerste brief van het juridische team van Massa, gereageerd hebben. Hierin zouden beide partijen aangegeven hebben dat de zomervakantie en zomerstop van het personeel het lastig hebben gemaakt om meteen te reageren op de brief. Zowel de FIA als de FOM zijn van mening dat er meer tijd nodig is om alle claims te verwerken, maar het kamp van Massa is duidelijk niet van plan al te lang te wachten. De advocaten van Massa willen alles nu in een stroomversnelling gaan brengen en hebben een duidelijke deadline opgesteld: 8 september 2023 om 16:00 uur moet het antwoord binnen zijn, anders wordt het proces in gang gezet.
