Death, dying, somebody losing his/her life, and passing away. All these concepts are hard to process in real life. In games though, when we think of, or somebody mentions “death”, what comes to mind is weapons, guns, bloodbath, evil enemies, high-octane action, bloodlust, viciousness and many more. Yet, these are not about “passing way”, we need more space, in both real life and games, to discuss the stage of dying. It is phase where it is in action right that moment, it is not like somebody gets killed in an instant. It is difficult to process the phase and relate it in game to a player, I quite agree. Spiritfarer fills this gap, I have played games where characters experience flashbacks or talk about their pasts which concern death or passing away, but I never experienced it in “present” tense before Spiritfarer.

We play as Stella, who is replacing the former and retiring spiritfarer Charon, and we are like a caretaker and a host. We own a ship and we welcome guests, who are passing away soon, we do fulfil their requests, we explore the world with our ship, discover new places and get to know guests better. Lastly, we do farewell the guests to death. What we do is to ease their passing away phase to the best our abilities offer.
Gwen, a reindeer and a guest, welcomes and guides us and teaches us different mechanics in the game, she acts like a tutorial most of the time without making it felt like one. The guests don’t openly talk about themselves as soon as you meet them or once they onboard, the place is slow when it comes to interaction and storytelling. Let’s take Gwen for instance, we get to know closely only bit by bit, each day you wake up, you interact with your guests, and they talk about a moment of their life, just one bit, or when you visit a new location or when they request something from you, there is a chance of deeper conversation, about their past lives, loved ones, what they are thinking of something specific, a food etc. It would have been too typical and direct if the guests talked about their lives at one sitting or in one long conversation, don’t you forget, these are dying people and it takes long to process this stage and their lives up to this point as a whole. It touches you when Gwen says good morning to you on a random morning and adds the last thing her dad said when was passing away that he had loved her when she wasn’t present in the room. These small details are what shape the experience for you, sometimes all it takes is one sentence that is uttered in an insignificant passing moment, and it sticks with you, these moments are the reason why Spiritfarer is such a cozy, lush, comforting game. It does not try to turn upside down, no, opposite of that is here, it is here to face the world, face the inevitable, and move on to the…passage. The game hits on all the right places, this game makes you embrace it completely and let your tears flow, did I mention that the game lets you hug your guests at all times and the guests appreciate you?

When it comes to navigation and journeying with your ship, you head over to the map. There are unique locations which offer distinct interactions (with guests and local people), requests and limited resources to collect, once you complete the main quest on these locations and collected resources available, there is not much reason to re-visit them. On the other hand, there are locations that provide you resources repeatedly and you can find these places all over world, you can get seeds, treasures, ores, wood, iron, jellyfish. It would be wise to visit these places on your way otherwise you will find yourself lacking essential resources to build or upgrade rooms, workshops and facilities on your ship. With the guests and our interaction, we build their requests personal spaces, for instance a worksop to threat silk for Gwen, another to manufacture plank for Atul.
Check out the navigation on map below:
youtube
And this’s your ship in all its glory:
youtube
Even though it is a management sim game, you aren’t simply given all the tutorial and tips and left alone, the game, through Gwen, teaches and directs you what is to be done next, and all the things you can build on your ship are unlocked at a slow rate, as these facilities are related to certain guests, you are introduced to them as you meet new guests, meaning that you are not left behind, you always keep the hang of what’s happening, guests’ requests, your next destination.
Well, the game does not miss the chance to make a nod to Dr. Strangelove:

for that bokuro thing
» how would their first date go?¿
where, when, + their first kiss maybe,,, yk, the sappy bs
💖 Oof this ended up being longer than I anticipated, I hope you like it! 💖
Kenma was sick of it. Kuroo had been prattling on about Bokuto incessantly in the weeks leading up to training camp for both years they had been in school together and even when Kenma was just a middle schooler. It was time to nudge things forward a bit.
“Kuroo, you’ve been running around in the tutorial for three years now. You need to get some huevos and level up.”
“Ugh…” Kuroo could feel Kenma’s unrelenting stare upon him. He never did beat around the bush.
“Kuroo. Look at this logically. You two are practically inseparable whenever you’re together. He gives you those weird chest bumps all the time. He tackles you when you aren’t looking. He’s practically spelling it out for you.”
“Kenma… he’s… you know... a strange person. He’s like that with everyone. I’m not even sure if he’d be into a guy.”
“Has he ever talked about a girl? Even once?”
“I mean, no.”
“Ha. So, the odds are in your favor. This might be your last chance before you graduate. If you aren’t going to make it weird, I’m going to make it weird for you.”
It was times like this when Kuroo reminded Kenma that he used to be even shyer than him. That behind his cocky bravado, there was a bashful, guarded heart. More than anything, he wanted him to be happy after high school. After he graduated, there would need to be more to life than just school and volleyball. Kenma knew that Kuroo would be fine financially, probably getting some high-paying job with big pharma, but he couldn’t help imagining him all alone in his tiny studio apartment every day: cooking a microwave dinner, watching some documentary, and falling asleep, day after day. After all he’d done for him in high school, Kenma wanted to do something in return. So, on his way home from school, he hopped a bus downtown and bought two tickets to the aquarium. He knew that if money had been put into it that Kuroo wouldn’t back out.
________________________________________________
Kuroo could feel the sweat making his jersey stick to his back. He could feel the endorphins of an exhausting day of training cursing through him like the cicada’s insistent song. The tangy smell of barbecue wafted up from the grill as the embers died down for the evening. He got one last plate and settled into the grass by the firepit next to Kenma and a bunch of the other guys. Everyone knew it was the 3rd years’ last day of the last training camp, and no one was in a hurry to leave. By the look of it, a game of truth or dare was already going strong, because sure enough, there was Kenma, holding a cicada right up to Hinata’s face.
“You don’t have to swallow. You just have to bite its head off. It’s really not that bad. There were thousands of years of famine where whole villages lived on nothing but bugs. You’re only paying tribute to your ancestors. It tastes kind of nutty.” Kenma chuckled.
Despite his look of disgust, Hinata squealed and bit the cicada.
“AHHHHH! ITS LEGS ARE STILL MOVING!!” Hinata turned over and gagged while Kenma doubled over in laughter. After he recovered, an out of breath Hinata turned to Kenma. “Truth or Dare?”
“Truth.”
“Lameee… Okay. What’s the most illegal thing you’ve ever done?”
Kenma started to explain how he pulled a fire alarm in fifth grade to get out of having to give a speech, but Kuroo’s head started pounding and he stopped listening as Hinata waved Bokuto over and he put two and two together. Were Hinata and Kenma conspiring against him? He shivered involuntarily and tried to steady his breathing. He knew exactly what was about to happen.
“Okay, Kuroo. Dare.” Kenma said. He could’ve sworn he saw Hinata giggle. He was definitely in on this.
“You need to give these to the most attractive person here.” He held out two tickets to the Shinagawa Aquarium.
The pounding started again. These kinds of nerves usually only happened to him when he was in a match and was torn about what to do next. The difference here was that he knew exactly what he needed to do. Kenma, always the perfect setter, had made sure conditions were ideal. Boy, was inter-high going to be awkward if what he was about to do next didn’t pan out. He still had an out. He could give the tickets to Kiyoko or Yachi. But he knew Kenma would never forgive him. He only hoped no one could see his face flush as he wordlessly shuffled over to Bokuto. He could have played it off as a joke, as he was sure Bokuto was going to, but he felt like he might pass out, so he smacked the tickets down on Bokuto’s thigh without making eye contact or saying a word.
“A man of good taste!” Bokuto announced in his goofy stadium announcer voice, ruffling Kuroo’s hair. Behind his façade, Kuroo could feel Bokuto’s huge eyes asking him a million questions. Questions he was not ready to answer. Not here anyway.
________________________________________________
“ned help. Calculis. Might fail. Come quick. Pls ”
Bokuto’s text had come as a horrendously spelled relief. It had been almost a week and a half since training camp. Kuroo had been obsessively checking his phone, sure that Bokuto had smushed up the tickets in his training bag and forgotten them. Or worse, used them to take some fangirl on a date. Despite Kuroo’s knack for academics, this was the first time Bokuto had directly asked for help.
Kuroo put a little extra gel in his hair, sniff checked himself, applied more deodorant, and ran out to catch the bus.
When he got to Bokuto’s place, Bokuto opened the door with sunglasses on and his keys in his hand. He did not appear to have even attempted any of his homework. It was a good thing Bokuto was talented at volleyball.
“I gave up!” Bokuto announced proudly, gesturing at the mound of papers on the ground. “But since you came all the way here, I didn’t want to waste your time. Still want to go to Shinagawa?”. The tickets weren’t crumpled. In fact, they were in perfect condition, like they had never even been in his pockets.
“Uhh... yeah.” God, Kuroo felt so awkward. He had spent so much time with Bokuto, but there had always been a net between them and a clear goal. Practice. Mess with kohai. Strategize. Eat. Now it was just the two of them wandering around. Was Bokuto fearless or oblivious? It was hard to tell. Kuroo listened as Bokuto rambled on and on about his futile attempt at calculus, and how he was worried about keeping his university scholarship if he failed, but despite the depressing topic, his tone was even more chipper than usual.
When they arrived at the aquarium, Bokuto’s eyes lit up like a little boy’s. “Kuroo? First, can we go pet the stingrays?”
Kuroo nodded and smiled just slightly as Bokuto tugged on his arm in the right direction. He listened as Bokuto pedantically explained the exact way to wiggle your fingers so that the stingrays would swim right up to you, and then precisely where you could touch them without getting close to their stinger. Bokuto’s incessant talking made it so that Kuroo’s own breathless joy didn’t lead to awkward pauses. Hours passed this way, Bokuto bursting with excitement and Kuroo riding his wave of enthusiasm.
There was one final corner of the aquarium Bokuto had been saving for last. The crowds had dispersed, and they were alone. This room was carpeted so that they could barely even hear their own footsteps in the dim lighting. They both were speechless. After a long day of crowds and Bokuto’s lengthy explanations, the silence in this room felt sacred. The only light came from the thousands of teal jellyfish floating in the indigo water.
Kuroo felt like he was standing on a ledge, like the jiggle of the diving board, as you hesitate before diving into the shockingly cold, but smooth water. He’d never been so attracted to someone before. He could listen to him for days and never get tired. Bokuto’s enthusiasm for life made him remember how it felt to be a kid, when everything was important when everything mattered. Now in the darkness, the green glow of the jellyfish playing off of Bokuto’s amber eyes, Kuroo knew he didn’t have a choice. He was jumping off. He whispered to him, not wanting to disrupt his wonder.
“Bokuto?”
Just as Bokuto turned toward him, before he could say anything, Kuroo leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. He could feel his stomach doing somersaults, vertigo overtaking him as Bokuto grabbed him back, taking his head in both of his hands and kissing him back. Hard. He felt the gentlest slip of his tongue into his mouth, forgetting where he was, knowing that he would never be able to get enough of this, of the way he tasted, the way his arm felt pressed into his back, how soft his hair felt, all the parts of him he had wanted to touch for so long. Wanting and being wanted back. Slowly the feeling of needing to faint returned and he could feel Bokuto pulling him onto a bench, holding him tight against him. His breath was soft and gentle on his neck, teasing at another kiss, but waiting until Kuroo looked back up at him, ready.
“Tetsuro… why did you make me wait so long?” Bokuto panted between urgent kisses on Kuroo’s neck.
“I… I was scared.” Kuroo hadn’t realized that there were tears brimming at the corners of his eyes and a lump in his throat.
Kuroo suddenly became aware of Bokuto’s arms, firm and warm, the same arms he had been watching for three years, holding him. Those huge hands were so gentle, his fingers massaging circles into the back of Kuroo’s neck.
“Let’s not be scared anymore, okay? Promise me, Tetsuro?”
Unable to speak, he took Bokuto’s hand and kissed it, hoping that this kiss would mean more than any words could.

Home Transitions “I don’t wanna do group work. It’s so lame that they make you have to work with other people.”
“It feels weird when I’m not with Jade. Why’d he have to be put in another class? I wish we were always taking the same classes together.”
“Trein got mad at me again... This sucks. I feel like he hates me for some reason.”
Home Transition (Login Greeting) “You can guess why I’m here, right? I’m hanging out to waste some time.”
Home Taps “Azul’s so annoying when he tells me I have to iron my shirt. What’s the issue if I can still wear it?”
“You wanna know what kind of classes we used to take under the sea? I could take you down there if you’re curious. Ehe!”
“I don’t get why I can score 100% on the test, but then still get yelled at for skipping class. Why is there a problem if I got 100%?”
“You know, Little Goldfish is called that because he’s red and small and there’s almost nothing on him to eat. Also he turns bright red when he gets angry, ehe~”
“Ahaha! If you keep that up I might just squeeze you.”
PE Uniform - R
Unlock Card “You wanna see me play? Okay, look forward to it~”
Groovy “I’m feeling really motivated today. Can I test it out with you?”
Home Setting “Nobody’s going to beat me at a test of strength, ehe!”

Home Taps “I’m really flexible. Hm, you wanna see? Should I show you~?”
“Right now I’m kinda in the mood to go chase around some small fries or crabs or something.”
“I like that there aren’t any annoying people in the air. In the water, there’s a lot of irritating fish everywhere...”
“‘Why did I join the basketball club’? Mm, that’s what I felt like picking that day. If it was today I’d probably have picked band.”
“Wanna play tag? Okay, I’ll be It. Alright, hurry up and run away.”
Lab Coat - SR
Unlock Card “I don’t even care about seeing what the result will be. Can we do something more fun?”
Groovy “Wanna try out this special potion I made?”
Home Setting “I don’t wanna do work if it’s not fun.”
Home Transitions “If you mix in the ingredients the way the instructions tell you to, it’ll be an automatic success, right? That sounds boring.”
“If you’re not done with your assignment, maybe go talk to Azul. He’ll tell you anything you want as long as you pay the price.”
“Why do we have to write reports? Getting facts and evidence is so much work.”
Home Transition (Login Greeting) “Should I help you with your lab? Ahaha, don’t be shy~”
Home Transition (Groovy) “Here, have this potion I made earlier. Huh, ‘what does it do’? Like I know?”
Home Taps “I gave Azul this gem I made in class earlier, and he was really happy with it. Maybe it’ll sell for a lot of money.”
“Ahaha~ Everyone looks like squids when they’re all lined up wearing their lab coats.”
“I forgot to wash my lab coat so I’m using Jade’s today.”
“Ahaha! That tickles! My turn now~!”

Home Setting “Everyone’s in the same black outfits. They look like a bunch of orcas.”
Home Transitions “The black coaches came to pick us up under the sea. That’s so cool. Amphibious magic coaches.”
“Jade and Azul wouldn’t get mad at me if I skipped the ceremony. They’re used to it.”
“The ceremony robes make me feel like I’m a deep-sea fish with lots of big fins.”
Home Transition (Login Greeting) “I’m soo bored just standing still during the ceremony. Here, I think I’ll go over to where you are, Shrimpy~”
Home Transition (Groovy) “Hah, it’s boring not having anything to do. I guess this is how a barnacle feels... Shrimpy, talk to me about something fun.”
Home Taps “Bah! ♡ Just kidding. Don’t you think the robes are kinda like curtains?”
“I like dark clothes. ‘Cause even if you get dirty, no one’ll notice.”
“I used to hate the concerts they had in the Coral Sea. They were full of songs that all sounded the same; it was so boring.”
“Azul pretends to be so enthusiastic at ceremonies when a lot of teachers and important people are present. It makes them so funny.”
“Shrimpy is so amusing~ Aren’t you scared that I might get back at you for poking at me so much?”
Home Tap (Groovy) “Oh my, whatever is the matter? ...Whaddaya think of my Jade impression? Did I sound like him? Come closer so you can get a better look!”

Groovy “I’ll tell you the rules of Octavinelle. Aren’t I nice?”
Home Setting “If you have any problems, I’ll introduce you to Azul anytime.”
Home Transitions “I don’t squeeze anyone who actually pays the price. It’s only those who don’t... that I have no mercy for. Hehe!”
“I got yelled at for snacking on some food before it was going to be served to a guest. It just looked really good.”

Home Transition (Login Greeting) “You wanna come visit our dorm? Yeah! I’ll show you around.”
Home Transition (Groovy) “Did you know the Mostro Lounge has a secret menu that I made up? Feel free to stop by for a bite anytime~”

“Hey, hey, look at my socks. They have an octopus pattern on them~ Aren’t they cute? They’re just like the Sea Witch.”
“Shoes are so nice. We don’t wear them in the ocean, so I wanna try on lots of different kinds while I’m on land.”
“Octavinelle feels really free. ‘Cause our motto here is ‘Do everything at your own risk.’”
“You know~ When I get prodded at so much... aha~ I really hate it.”
Home Tap (Groovy) “The ghosts at the Ramshackle Dorm are kinda like jellyfish. I wanna try talking to them, so let me stay at your place sometime.”

Groovy “Thanks for the birthday wishes. I’ll make sure to do lots of fun things on your birthday too, Shrimpy~”
Home Setting “Happy birthday, me! I’m excited to see what this year’s birthday will be like.”
Home Transitions “Azul gave me shoe polish, so I tried it out right away~ See, they’re so shiny that you can almost see your reflection in them. Cool, right?”
“I got lots of presents from my parents. But I tried to tell them nothing big ‘cause my room is really small at the dorm... Geez.”
*yawns* “All that excitement’s making me tired. I think I’ll go get my presents from everyone who didn’t give me one to keep myself awake.”
Home Transition (Login Greeting) “Who was the first person to wish me happy birthday? The answer is... Jade! Every year we’re always the first ones to say it to each other.”
Home Transition (Groovy) “Shrimpy, you’re kind of bad at plating food, aren’t you? Hehe. It’s okay, you don’t have to redo it. ‘Cause this is funny.”
Home Taps “I told Mr. Beakfish that I didn’t have homework today ‘cause it’s my birthday but he just gave me more ‘presents.’ He’s mean.”
“Sea Otter gave me a percussion instrument from the Scalding Sands. He gave Jade one with strings, and the body’s the same color as our hair.”
“I kept asking Little Goldfish for a shoehorn so he got me one, but was angry about it. It has an ‘F’ carved into it! He told me Jade’s is next. Ehe!”
“Sea Snake and Crabby threw a pie in my face in our clubroom. It turned into a food fight between all of us... It was so much fun~”
“What? You’re curious about my pin? It’s the same design as the shoes we wear with our dorm uniforms. It almost looks like they used magic to shrink one down. It’s cool~”
Home Tap (Groovy) “Hey~ What are you hiding behind your back? You’ve been acting weird for a while, it’s so obvious. Come on~ Give me my present already.”
Duo Magic Floyd: “Are you gonna celebrate for me, Sea Turtle?” Trey: “Let me wish you a happy birthday, Floyd!”

Week 1 of University - Yeet
So I think I was absolutely yeeted by the university system this week. Being back was fantastic, I felt intellectually challenged again, I got to see my friends that I couldn’t catch up with over summer and just ... learning again had my mood hella good.
Monday was a good day, I only had two classes and a lot of time to catch up with everyone. Being back in the science lectures also had me feeling great, and so did my Latin American culture paper. On Tuesday I finally got to start the Spanish component of my Arts degree which made me happy also. Just seeing people, hanging out and talking a whole lot of shit made my mood lift compared to over the summer.
Wednesday is when the mood went downwards ... and fast. I went to the doctors because my ear was killing me, and guess what the doctor said?! No diving for at least a month, and if I want to be safe, potentially 6 months. This is not what we’re here for. But to go to the doctors, I had to miss my first lab for my biology paper, and it was a lab on sponges!! Ya girl had a bad start to the day, and the end of the week.
On Thursday, my timetable is an actual mess because I have 4 classes in a row all over the campus with only 10 minutes between each class. To make matters worse, I’m actually meant to have 5 classes on a Thursday but due to me having 2 classes on at the same time, I have to miss one of them. 3 classes I have in a row are all taught by the same lecturer who knows me fairly well, and during the second class, I have to take time out for myself to have a cry because I just ... was overthinking the whole clash and it just really hit me.
Today (Friday) wasn’t much better as because now a lot of what happened over the summer holidays has come rushing back, and the whole situation with my ex ... really isn’t great. I mean we’re still friends, but I don’t know what to do and how to navigate a few situations he’s put me in, even though he literally lives in Iceland. His friends have been incredibly helpful and I’m thankful for them, but yeah there are things behind the scenes that they don’t need to know about that are happening but anyways. Something that did make my day was the fact that we had a few species of Cnidaria in our lab. My faves by far were jellyfish and anemones, especially because there were wandering sea anemones and they are just the most amazing sea creature like I literally can’t. We have not cried today, and I hope not to cry for the rest of the day and then the weekend. I will succeed.
Anyways, I will make more of an effort to take pictures next week and will be back to update you all again. Next week is definitely more stressful as tutorials start as well, meaning I will have 15 (16 including the clash) classes next week and work. Lol rest in piece me. Can’t promise I won’t cry.
Many loves Jordana xx

Ch. 18: Vitamin Sea
SUNDAY - SUMMER 7
For two more days, Achilles and Alex had continued their early morning swim lessons. The rainbow on his right arm had since been joined by a smiling blue jellyfish, an arctic fox, and a t-rex (he’d received two yesterday for an “extra good job”). A fast learner thanks to online video tutorials, Emily’s occasional guidance, and an overfilled bathtub, by the end of their lesson on Thursday, Achilles was leaving his anxiety mostly on the sand, and had been able to swim both a pretty self-respecting breakstroke and freestyle across the length of the tide pool.
The mornings with Alex had been his favorite times of the day—the Alex of it all aside, the water was refreshing, and he felt, as pathetic as it was (in his eyes) for a grown man, the teeniest, tiniest semblance of pride to be learning how to finally swim. Though any time he got too cocky during their lessons, Alex had threatened to row him into the sea and dump him overboard.
They had been unable to practice Friday and Saturday, for those were the days Alex returned to Zuzu to teach at Orange Grove, so Achilles had secretly taken it upon himself to practice right after sunrise in the tide pools alone, when the world was still quiet. Oh how quickly his preferences could change—he scarcely found himself thinking about Hyacinthia’s chaos these days.
He knew, in the back of his mind, it was stupid to venture out alone. He was still very much a novice. But while he knew Emily or even Elliott would likely be happy to watch him and make sure he didn’t drown, he still couldn’t overcome the embarrassment.
27 years old and able to drive a boat but unable to swim. Hmph.
On Sunday, however, he had had a bit of a late start, for he and Elliott had had yet another lengthy, late night dinner conversation after bumping into each other at the local “museum”—if one could really call it that. With about two tiny archeological displays and the paltriest library selection he had ever seen, Achilles, who had been looking to pursue Spooky Summer Project #2 and learn more about the local forest spirits, had spent the afternoon flipping through a tattered books on goblins by an M. Jasper. Perhaps he’d purchase a new library for the town (including copies of his own books, of course), maybe kick it off with a little survey around the community to see what folks liked… because, really, these empty shelves were just sad.
Since the sun had long risen by the time Achilles left the farm for Pelican Town, he knew the tide pools would likely be crowded, and though his swimming skills had finally reached a level where he felt ready to be perceived, he didn’t particularly think it right to hog the small space usually filled with children. Nevertheless, it was a wickedly hot day, and to spend it on the shores in the breezy beach air (which he was slowly learning to, if not love, dislike slightly less) wasn’t unwelcome. He could invite Elliott. Perhaps he could get started on putting together that book survey…
“That’s a good boy, Dusty!”
Achilles froze on the cobblestone path by Dr. Harvey’s. Alex was just ahead. He’d likely had just gotten back from a walk with Dusty, for he was unlocking the gate to the dog’s grassy pen.
“You might be the only one around here who understands me, buddy. No one else has seen the kind of stuff you and I have, huh? That’s a good boy.” Achilles could seen Alex give Dusty a good scratch behind the ears before unclipping the leash and standing to grab some treats from the box hanging from one of the fence posts. It was then that Alex caught Achilles—who had neglected to hide—staring from the clinic.
Alex waved. “Achilles! Hey, man.”
“Oh—hi!” He gave a slightly sheepish wave in return. “Didn’t see you there.”
Nothing to do but commit to the bit. Pretending he hadn’t heard that depressing little monologue, Achilles made his way over and joined Alex at the pen. He took a seat inside the fenced in yard and allowed Dusty to take a hefty seat in his lap.
“Who’s a good boy, Dusty?” Achilles murmured, rubbing the panting dog’s neck as Alex snapped a few dog biscuits in half.
Dusty’s collar jangled as he bopped around in Achilles’ lap, and in casual curiosity, Achilles took a closer look at the metal tags clacking against each other. A pink one indicated Dusty was up to date on vaccines, nice; a bright blue bone had “Dusty Mullner” engraved above Alex’s address, 1 River Road. But there was oddly a third tag—this one more worn than the others, a yellow-green heart that had an address from outside of Zuzu and a different name.
“Dusty Andrews?” Achilles asked, turning to Alex who was now squatting in front of the panting dog, feeding him the pieces of biscuit one by one.
“Ah…” For just a second, Alex’s face darkened, but when he stood back up, after wiping his slobbery, crumb-dotted hands on the grass, he seemed more weary than upset at Achilles’ query.
“My dad’s last name. My mom and I picked out the tag way back when. Honestly, I kind of forgot about it… I guess I could take it off, it’s probably confusing with the old address and stuff…” Alex took a closer look at the heart shaped tag, too, weighing it in his hand as Dusty collapsed onto the ground to take a nap.
He took a seat next to Achilles on the grass, uncharacteristically hunching over, legs criss crossed in front of him, the toe of his right sneaker an inch away from Achilles’ shoe.
“My father wasn’t a good guy… actually, no, I’ll say it, he was an asshole. He ruined everything for me and my mom.”
Alex’s fingers began shredding one of the many purple petaled sweet peas that grew wild among the Valley.
“Okay, well, maybe not everything, but he sure didn’t help. Half the time he was gone… the other half he’d drink all night, yell, throw things, tell me I’m worthless, that I’d never amount of anything, you know, that whole shebang, whatever. He never apologized and he could never admit he was wrong.
“I used to think he hated me for screwing up his life. Stuck with a dumb kid he didn’t want, or something like that. But now, I think he resented me for just being, I don’t know, young… because he’d wasted his youth doing nothing and had gotten nowhere in life. That’s my take on it now, anyway, or at least Grandma’s take on it—I mean it’s not like I’d been doing much with my life as a 10 year old… not like I’m doing much with it now… but I mean, there’s wasn’t much for him to be bitter over. But hey, who knows what was going on in his mind.”
A sudden breeze scattered the little shreds of sweet pea from his tiny pile across the pen. Alex’s eyes followed their various paths through the air for a few moments, before leaning back into the fence, his head now tipped up facing the sky.
“He left 14 years ago today. Soon after that, Mom got real sick. We moved to Pelican Town, back in with my grandparents. I never left. Changed my last name, though, when I turned 18.” He twisted Dusty’s tag between his fingers. “I don’t know. I don’t have much left from my mom, so I guess maybe I always thought Dusty deserved to keep something from her.”
A beat. Dusty took it upon himself to fill the silence, rising from the ground next to Alex with a little huff and jingling his way to stuff his moist nose back into Achilles’ lap.
“I…” Achilles was grateful for the excuse to look at something that wasn’t Alex. He dug his hands into Dusty’s fur. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
Alex gave a small, sad smile and reached his arm over to join Achilles in petting Dusty on the head. Their hands brushed, but Achilles, his nerves on high alert, pulled jerkily away. Though Alex, perhaps still deep in reminiscent thought, didn’t seem to notice. “It’s okay. It was a long time ago. A lot’s happened since then…
“Hey, enough about me, though.” A determined shift in tone; the cheer in Alex’s voice somewhat forced. “Where you off to?”
More grateful for the change in topic than he probably had any right to be—well, at least compared to Alex, it was his story they were leaving behind after all—Achilles gestured down at his swim trunks and the terrible pun that had been haunting him this past week stamped down the side. “Well, as the pants say, gotta get that Vitamin Sea.”
Alex gave a tilt of his head, scrunching that perfectly straight nose of his as he scrutinized the screenprinted text. “Wow. You know, I never noticed they said that, and I wish you hadn’t pointed it out. Awful. Literally the worst. You’d think rich people could afford something better—”
Achilles stood, dusted the grass off his pants, and without another word, made for the gate.
“Hey, where are you going—”
“Ho, ho, well, actually, sir, my dad used to tell me the best way to deal with bullies was to just walk away so…” Oh fuck, you idiot, why’d you mention your dad, he just told you his was an asshole.
“Oh I see, so you got bullied a lot as a kid?” Alex had also stood (Dusty had returned to his nap in the middle of the grass), and together they left the pen and began to head down towards the beach (“Ew, stop following me, you bully.”)
“I was never a victim, thank you very much, though, unpopular opinion, I do believe all children should be bullied just a little bit—“
“—that’s a terrible thing to say—”
“It builds character. No, I kid. Well, maybe. Nah, I think my parents were just trying to stay ahead of the game after I came out—they say middle school can be a ruthless place. But turns out, I was fine. Maybe not as popular as you, Mr. Prom King, but I did well enough.”
“Eh. I don’t see you walking away from a bully anyway.”
“What, you think I’d beat them up instead?”
“No, but you’d probably tell them to go eff themselves at the very least. Am I wrong?”
“Did you say eff as in fuck or off as in kill yourself?”
“I said eff, but honestly I could see you saying both.”
“Yeah, yeah, so this is what you think of me huh…”
Alex chuckled at Achilles’ dry sarcasm, and, in a gesture that sent Achilles’ stomach into a tiny barrel roll, lay a hand on his shoulder. “Listen, I’ve got a shift until 2pm, but if you want to maybe head to the tide pool after if it’s not too busy, I’d be down. It’s been a few days, don’t want you forgetting all the progress we made.”
“Actually…”
Perhaps it was a bad idea, especially since Alex reacted exactly how he had anticipated Alex would react when he told the lifeguard he had been practicing by himself the past two days, whipping his hand off Achilles’ shoulder to gesticulate wildly at the beach beyond. But a part of Achilles just couldn’t help but share the initiative (however dangerous it had been) he had taken if it meant receiving even the slightest bit of praise. Although Alex didn’t seem willing to give it.
“You can’t do that, it’s dangerous—hell, Ash, at the very least get Emily or someone to come with you—”
“It’s fine, the water’s like six feet deep—”
“You can drown in an inch, you know that—”
“Listen, it’s fine—I’ve convinced myself the tide pool’s like being in a bath tub, I haven’t had—”
“—look like an irresponsible lifeguard—”
“All right, all right, all right!” Achilles stopped in his tracks and held his hands up in surrender. “I won’t go without you anymore.”
“Well, it doesn’t have to be me, just bring someone—”
“Okay, okay, I will.”
“Promise?”
“Yes, I promise.”
Alex exhaled, an audible puff through his nose. “Fine. Good.”
“I mean… come on though, I’m totally a natural right, you said so yourself.” Achilles checked Alex’s shoulder as they resumed walking. “It’s only a matter of time—”
“Oh yeah? How about we row out beyond the waves after dinner and throw you overboard, huh?”
“I’m so sorry, as exciting as that sounds, I’ve actually got plans this evening so I’m going to have to ask for a rain check—”
“Oh, plans, huh? That reminds me actually…” Alex glanced at him, brows slightly furrowed in both curiosity and concern. “How’s this week been for you? That’s week one of your Summer of Rest and Relaxation, just in case you’ve forgotten.”
“Great. No, really, I mean it,” Achilles added after catching sight of Alex’s skeptical face. “Ok, maybe not great, but it’s been… fiiiiine. I mean, sure, I still catch myself getting anxious about all this… free time—I mean, honestly, that’s probably why I kept swimming while you were out these past couple days—”
“—irresponsible—”
“But… you know. It hasn’t been terrible. Got dinner with Elliott a few nights ago, been finding some… small things to keep myself entertained, I suppose.”
Alex nodded. “Okay… doesn’t sound bad. Just remember, it’s supposed to be fun all right? Don’t go turning any of this into something bigger than it should be… just, like, do things to do them.”
“Yeah, yeah, got it Mr. Mullner…”
They had made it to the beach, and it was there, right next to a particularly thick bush of sea grass close to Elliott’s cabin, that Achilles saw a purple junimo.
“What the hell are you doing on the beach?” he called, forgetting for a second that no one else seemed to be able to see them.
“Uh oh—who are you talking to?” Alex, shielding his eyes with his hands, looked about the area for signs of an intruder of some sort.
“It’s a—oh. Um, it’s a… junimo? Like Junimo Cart, I don’t know if you’ve heard of them, but I’ve been seeing them since I moved here, remember that day—”
“Oh! A forest spirit?”
“Yes! Yes. I’ve been trying to learn more them, but it’s been a lot harder than I realized…” Thank goodness, Alex didn’t think he was crazy.
“So that’s what you were seeing this whole time? Interesting, and you’re seeing one on the beach? You know, I think my grandparents used to be able to see them… I’ve never, but if you ever have any questions, you should ask them.”
“That’d be great actually, yeah I might just do that…”
They had reached the lifeguard chair. Achilles had been prepared to say his farewells, but as they stood underneath the giant red umbrella, something between them still felt slightly off kilter from earlier and he wanted to fix it. It was likely all in Achilles’ own head, but there was something… heavy weighing in his chest. Something asking to be released.
“I’m, um, sorry about your dad. And your mom,” Achilles said, low enough that the other lifeguard couldn’t hear. He had hesitated in bringing the topic back up again, but his earlier sympathies hadn’t felt like they had adequately acknowledged the vulnerability of Alex’s admission.
A little sigh. Again, more resigned than irritated at the switchback in topic, but Alex’s green eyes were ablaze—whether in determination or anger, though, Achilles wasn’t sure.
“Hey, like I said, it was awhile ago.”
“Yeah, but…”
“Now I don’t want any sympathy. If there’s one good thing about my past, it’s that it made me strong. Or,” he looked down at his hands, nerves breaking through. “At least, that’s another one of Grandma’s takes.”
“Well… you’re the strongest guy I know, bro,” Achilles said rather lamely, awkwardly placing a firm hand on Alex’s muscular arms.
“That’s when I first got into swimming, you know. I actually used to um, swim competitively, back in the day…” Alex’s eyes now had that glazed, far off look as he surveyed the beach without seeing. Achilles had forgotten it was Emily who had told him about Alex’s pro-sports history—Alex himself hadn’t mentioned it during any of their lessons, and Achilles was grateful now that he had never brought the details up by accident.
“I ran a lot as a kid. Whenever my dad got into one of his moods, my mom would just take me out to the park and we’d play this game… well, okay, it wasn’t a really a game, it was just a way to give her a well deserved break and get me to shut up. I’d practice counting seconds while running around the playground and we’d write down the times, and she’d give me a sticker.
“When we moved here, it was during the Summer, and with the sea and everything, I just… fell into swimming. I guess all that cardio transferred over. It was easy. It was nice. Everything was so quiet under the water. You can’t hear people yelling at you under there. I mean, not that he was around to yell anymore…”
“Have you talked to him since?”
Alex blinked rapidly a few times—Achilles had never noticed how long his eyelashes were— before shrugging. “He reached out once on my 12th birthday. That was the last time. But it’s been, what, 12 years now? I don’t think about him anymore. Except on days like this…” He jaw was firmly set, fingers tense as they drummed slowly against his thighs.
“What are you up to, Alex?” The other lifeguard—the same sporty brunette Achilles had noticed earlier that week—stuck her head down from the chair. “What’s keeping you, you’ve been standing there for a hot minute, Jason’s shift ended five minutes ago.”
Her ponytail bounced behind her red baseball cap as she swiveled around, looking for whatever had been distracting Alex and catching sight of Achilles. Her brown eyes narrowed slightly. “Oh. Hello.”
“Hmm, you know, speaking of birthdays…” Alex said, still a little lost in thought. He hadn’t even acknowledged the girl. “Figured I’d have a get together by the beach, maybe a bonfire or something. You’ll be there?”
“I don’t know man, a week’s notice, I’ll have to check my calendar, you know I have so much going on these days…”
“I’ll call your assistant, make sure it’s penciled in,” Alex said with a laugh, his good mood returning as he took out his sunglasses and finally, in a enviably graceful climb, joined the girl up in the chair. “Now, you stay out of the water today unless you’re supervised, okay? Haley might be free—”
“Haley? Having her do your job now, huh, isn’t supervising what you’re here for?” Achilles called, jabbing a finger at the safety ring hanging from the side of the stand before dodging the sunglasses Alex proceeded to hurl at him.

SCREEN - Final Edits - ART & FEAR
1.I have changed the audio completely. Instead of layering the voices on top of each other, I have place different audio recordings one after the other to make them flow. (image below)
Also, I have downloaded a wider variety of media news voices from different countries and mixed them with songs about “hand washing”, coughing sounds and others.
2.I have made applied transition between the videos to make them flow as I realised that that drastic separation between the videos was annoying to watch. Now, while the previous video is ‘dissolving’, the next starts. (image below)
3. While I had previously decided that the video should be on a loop, I have now decided to give it a beginning and an end. The beginning is the Brexit countdown ( in which I kept the original audio as I think is very powerful). The reason for this is because when this project began the media focus was all about Brexit, while subsequently it became about corona ( as it is shown on the video). I have kept the jellyfishes at the end as supposed/apparent moment of quiet but is not. Although jellyfishes look very beautiful and peaceful are actually a symbol of the consequences of global warming, they are polluting the oceans causing destruction of sea life the as they can survive in any water, with low oxygen and they are basically immortal.
The viewer can come into the room anytime and watch the full video ( it is only 3 minutes) .
4. I have reduced the introduction text into a few sentences and wrote a small “please note” to notify the viewer about the satirical approach as I know that some people might take it as offensive.
(image below)
However, I did not change the title! :

5. Instead of using Artsteps to make a virtual tour of the mirror room ( which to be honest was impossible unless I knew how to use certain softwares), I have decided to use my craft skills :) to make my own mirror room by using 4 square mirrors, the computer screen to project the video and the 360 camera ( which thank god I had borrowed from Connor before the lockdown). I put together the 4 mirrors with the tape and placed the open side in front of the computer screen and played the video. I placed the 360 camera inside the ‘room’ and controlled it through my phone.(images below)
The video was hard to export and edit but I managed to place and sync the audio to it and upload it to Youtube. If I could go back I would try to make it a better quality but I guess as a mock up it should be fine.(images below)

I would definitely used this technique in future!
LINK TO THE MIRROR ROOM https://youtu.be/yt7CNNkG6EM
ps:I have also tried to use mirrored one-way film, which is a material with the mirror on one side, and you can see through the other side. I bought it and I have placed the camera on the outside looking in (no camera inside the room) but it was way too dark!
6. CRITICAL SELF EVALUATION
I have to admit that making this project it’s been quite of a challenge.
First of all, when I started it I had no idea that we would be in these unfamiliar circumstances. However, it is exactly because of this situation, that has been unfolding week by week until now, that allowed me to experience “live” the evolutions of these events and record them.
My strength I'd say it is "to have known" since the beginning that I wanted this project to be about the current times, therefore the feel to make something responsive.
Initially, I felt inundated by a broader range of events (Brexit, Covid-19, Climate Change and more) and the plan was to represent exactly what was happening in my head. This is when I had the idea of making the mirror room, where the viewer would just enter it and have that overwhelming/disturbing/claustrophobic feeling that I have, being bombarded every single day by media news. It is been interesting to experience how quickly it all became about Covid-19 and this is when I decided to focus on it.
My biggest problem has been the constant unpredictable changes of events ( such as when Boris Johnson got sick with Covid-19) that made the process very slow and uncertain until the very end. Still, at this time, I am not sure if it will upset someone.
I realised where my weaknesses lie while working on the video and ( particularly ) audio technical skills. I am not sure this is because I did not have a proper introduction to them or is it just because is not for me. Either way, I have enjoyed learning Premiere Pro and I will keep practising with it as it made me realise how limited my skills as a photographer sometimes can be.
Organisational is always been my bigger strength, in fact, before the lockdown, I borrowed a Canon handycam, a 360 Insta camera, triggers and lights from the store. Without these, my project would have been impossible to produce. Also, I have used my crafty skills to assemble a DIY model of a mirror room to reconstruct what I would have done in the gallery space.
I only wish I had more time so I could keep documenting the end of this pandemic as I have been (accidentally) documenting it since the beginning.
The most fascinating aspect of this project is that I had absolutely no power over the development of these events so I just sat in my house, watch it happen it and record it in my own way.
Overall, it’s been an interesting, sometimes difficult and fun journey in which the comments and critiques given by my friends, family and groups tutorial have been crucial in helping me to comprehend my insecurities and be proud of my strengths.
