Research Summary: “Driving Canadian Growth and Innovation: Five Challenges Holding Back Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Canada” By Dan Herman & Anthony D. Williams, deepcentre: Centre for Digital Entrepreneurship + Economic Performance (2013)

At Issue: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which comprise over 99 percent of businesses in Canada, are commonly portrayed as the backbone of the national economy. However, only a small minority of companies, approximately 4 to 7 percent, demonstrate sufficient growth to make a meaningful contribution to job creation and overall GDP. It is imperative for policy makers to mitigate or remove the prevailing impediments facing small businesses, such that a larger share of SMEs may embark upon growth trajectories that enable substantial contributions to the national economy.

Research Objective(s): The objectives of this study are to accurately characterize SMEs in Canada, identify key obstacles to their growth, and propose specific recommendations for policy makers to better support the small business economy.

Scope: The study addresses SMEs, defined as companies with fewer than 100 employees, in Canada. In addition to comprising over 99 percent of Canadian companies, SMEs employ more than 6.9 million people and account for nearly 70 percent of private-sector payrolls.

Approach: The authors of this study conducted secondary research by completing a review of more than 23 independent sources.

Findings: Canadian firms lag behind international competitors in adopting productivity-enhancing technologies. In 2006, Canada ranked eleventh among 21 OECD countries in total economic investment in information and communication technologies, down from tenth in 2005 and ninth in 2004. Technology investments by Canadian manufacturers fell by 37 percent between 2000 and 2013. There is a 33 percent technology investment gap between Canadian and U.S. firms, with Canadian SMEs spending 38 percent less on technology than their U.S. counterparts.

Despite the preponderance of service firms among Canadian SMEs, only 12 percent use supply chain management software. Just 4.2 percent of SMEs in Canada qualify as “innovative SMEs” – defined as those that allocate more than 20 percent of investment expenditures to research and Filemaker development. Studies of SMEs in the U.K., Germany, and France indicate that greater adoption of technology by SMEs benefits not only individual companies but also the economy at large. Increased innovation by SMEs results in increased job creation, productivity improvements, and GDP growth.

To enlarge the pool of high-growth, high-impact SMEs in Canada, policy makers are advised to:

(1) Incentivize business growth via tax policy reforms that reward revenue and employment growth;

(2) Promote international expansion of SMEs by (a) facilitating access to export markets and (b) proactively identifying would-be exporters and facilitating their global expansion via management training, export assistance, and export financing;

(3) Build SME management competencies by hosting innovative management mentorship programs and providing incentives for participating in ongoing training;

(4) Promote technology adoption among SMEs by (a) sponsoring collaborative industry-government approaches to financing, (b) engaging in information sharing in order to build the case for technological investment, and (c) emphasizing that technology adoption does not just narrowly benefit knowledge-intensive companies or tech start-ups;

(5) Facilitate more competitive prices for telecommunications services;

(6) Encourage R&D spending by (a) facilitating the development of industry-academic partnerships and (b) providing financing options and commercialization support for SMEs that pursue promising ventures with university partners; and

(7) Improve access to capital for SMEs with high-growth potential by providing conditional loans and matching grants, in order to facilitate private SME investment in technology, training, and R&D.

Interpretive Planner

Working under the Interpretive Planning Manager, the Interpretive Planner researches, develops the content and creates outlines for, and writes exhibition- and gallery-related collateral, including text panels, labels, audio and video scripts, multimedia content and other elements as required by project. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Creative Writing, or related field required, Masters preferred, with 3-5 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience in research tactics and demonstrated experience in developing content and excellence in writing exhibition text, in a wide array of voices, for a wide range of audiences is essential. An understanding of informal learning strategies is helpful. Familiarity with cutting-edge interpretive and interactive approaches to museum exhibition practice is necessary. Capture Air Quality (AQI) in FileMaker

Yuck, this air!  We've just opened our windows for the first time in over a week because the air quality is ONLY "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups".

I built this database back in November 2018 when the Camp Fire was raging in Northern California and the air quality here in San Francisco was getting really bad.  Little did I know at the time that I'd be opening this database again every year!

I’ve been using it again the past month, and when I saw how horrific the air is today in Portland OR, I thought I’d send it to a couple Oregonian friends — and then I thought others might appreciate it too.  So here you are, Others.

It's basic, but it works. I find it easier to update here than to check the website(s), plus I can see the history.

When the fires started again this year, I learned about PurpleAir, so I added in a way to capture the three PurpleAir monitors closest to my home.  The original data, and left column, is from AirNow.

To use it:

First, download the file.  Then:

a) Find your local AirNow feed at feeds.airnowapi.org  b) Select the link for the RSS “Current Air Quality” c) Paste this link into the Insert from URL step in the “Get AirNow AQI” script

d) Find your local PurpleAir monitors at purpleair.com/map e) Click on one of the monitors and copy the ID from the URL.  It’s the number right after “select=”  (it’ll be something like …&select=5776#… ).  f) Place/paste the number (e.g. 5776) into the repeating field gPurpleAirID_reps on the “all fields” layout g) Repeat for other local monitors.  (I’m only using 3 of the 10 repetitions. If you use more, you’ll need to add them to the layout.)

NOTE: Initially I was just capturing data from AirNow which only gets updated hourly, so the update process only updates when there’s a new AirNow reading, but you can run the PurpleAir update script individually on any particular record too.

Requiring solid strategic and analytic capabilities, the Director will promote awareness and drive revenues through subscription and single ticket strategies across web, digital, print and broadcast media for approximately 35 engagements annually in all disciplines of theater, dance, comedy, family performances, classical and non-classical music concerts, along with a National Geographic and speaker series. 

Specific Responsibilities:

Lead the creation and execution of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that supports organization’s programmatic, artistic, education and fundraising goals across all channels with defined, measurable success metrics.

Work closely with small team to develop, support, and manage integrated marketing plans and all subsequent campaign elements including revenue management.

Direct pricing strategies, revenue projections, evaluation, reporting, data analytics, web site management and development, CRM database management (Tickets.com), and e-communication strategies.

Identify, cultivate, and build strategic marketing partnerships with mainstream marketing and affinity groups.

Implement selling strategies for subscriptions and single ticket sales events. Create time tables for multi-media efforts, analyze daily results and adjust as needed to meet sales goals.

Media Planner and buyer, keep abreast of media choices in the market, negotiate print and broadcast buys with added-value components for each season.

Create targeted promotions that complement events, generate awareness/excitement, and offer potential press opportunities and community outreach.

Design and implement comprehensive organizational communications strategies to include messaging, list segmentation and copy-writing.

Work with PR to create copy for website, e-marketing, and other campaigns as needed.

Work collaboratively across the organization to integrate SPA brand into all materials, communications, and channels including our physical space.

Stay abreast of audience demographics, trends and needs. Develop and analyze audience surveys for quick reads on specific issues.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience developing, implementing, and evaluating successful marketing strategies, with progressive experience in leadership and/or leading teams

A strategic and analytical thinker who can translate short- and long-term goals into practical, implementable plans of action tied to evaluation and key performance indicators

Hands on collaborative leader who can set a vision and direction and be part of the working team with their own projects and timelines that advance collective efforts.

Knowledge of and experience with Houston’s arts and arts education communities

Excellent written communication and oral presentation skills

Demonstrated success leading a team toward a common goal, emphasizing collaboration, respect, and high performance

Excellent time management and project management skills with the ability to drive multiple projects simultaneously

Facility and competency working with digital marketing and social media technologies and platforms including comfort working with websites, e-mail platforms, databases, and design programs including the following: WordPress, MailChimp, FileMaker, Adobe Creative Suite

Flexibility to work nights and weekends

Must hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher

Positive, cooperative work ethic and interaction with staff, board, guests and visitors.

High degree of initiative and attention to detail; ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Proficiency with MS Outlook ● MS Word ● MS Excel ● MS Powerpoint● WordPress

In this article, we take a look and understand what is OAuth Authentication in FileMaker? With the release of FileMaker 16, users can login to a FileMaker database using OAuth 2.0. A feature that will ease the lives of FileMaker developers and their client’s lives as well.

What is Authentication, External Authentication, and OAuth Authentication?

Authentication Authentication is the process of recognizing a user’s identity. In authentication, an incoming request is matched with a set of identifying credentials. In FileMaker, Authentication is done by verifying a pair of Username and Password.

OAuth is an open protocol to allow secure authorization in a simple and standard method from web, mobile and desktop applications but without giving them the passwords. Companies such as Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter permit the users to log in using their accounts with third-party applications or websites.
