Beauregard Lionett was the eldest child and sole daughter of the Lionett estate. By proxy, this made her the heiress of her father’s immensely successful winery and business. Her father had her privately schooled for most of her life by the finest tutors money could buy, groomed for the business she would inherit. Beau eventually attended the most prestigious college that would accept her. By her fifth birthday, her parents promised her in betrothal to a man of standing, one of which her father approved. Beauregard’s entire life was planned out for her, monitored and guided in a controlled environment so that she would incubate into the best potential outcome of herself.
Every variable was accounted for.
Except for two—Beau’s rebellious attitude, and one Yasha Nydoorin.
Yasha, who grew up a street urchin and peddled flowers in the market and worked security at taverns overnight. Who tumbled into Beauregard’s life one fateful day and refused to release her purchase on the slim facet she had latched on to.
She was, of course, expressly forbidden from entering the grounds of the Lionett estate, so they made do with what they could manage.
Beau often left the grounds of the estate to traverse the town market, convincing her father she went to peruse the competition. In truth, she met up with Yasha at the edges of the hawking thoroughfare before they sprinted into the woods together. Under the canopy of the trees, Beau shed the weight of her family’s eyes and expectations, her looming betrothal, the chokehold of a pre-determined future.
Beneath the leaves, she was free.
It was here, sprawled among the tall, untamed grass tucked away between the trunks of ancient trees, that Beau dared to dream. She would let herself imagine a life away from town, from her family. Beau pictured a tiny house, perhaps the size of her father’s parlor, a simple hearth, and Yasha’s fingers woven with her own.
“What are you thinking about?” Yasha whispered, husky voice pressed against Beau’s temple as they lay together.
“You,” Beau said without hesitation. “You, and a tiny cabin far from here.”
She felt the slow curve of Yasha’s smile against her skin, and Beau tipped her chin back and up to look. Yasha’s smiles were like a sunrise—slow and bright and promising. Beau would wake up early every day to witness them if that was what it took.
“That sounds nice,” Yasha said, arm tightening around Beau’s shoulders.
Beau hummed in agreement as the wind rustled the leaves above them. The surrounding light had dimmed significantly, but it was still early afternoon—far too soon to be getting dark. The wind seemed to pick up, too.
From her supine position, Beau watched the incoming storm brew to life. The leaves high above overturned in the wind on their branches, the pale undersides exposed to the sky. They were usually unseen by the sun, the same way the dark side of the moon was. Shadows stretched toward one another until they blended together, a blanket of gray that seemed to mute color and sharpen every edge.
Neither of them feared storms, but Beau knew getting caught in the rain would only make them cold and sick.
With a heavy sigh, Beau sat up, Yasha’s arm sliding from around her shoulders down to the curve of Beau’s waist. It took Yasha another moment before she sat up as well. Dandelions and loose grass sat tangled among her wild hair. Beau couldn’t help but to grin, plucking some blades free with gentle fingers.
“We should head back,” Beau whispered as she dropped the grass off to the side. “It’s going to rain soon.”
Beau stood then. If she let herself stay here any longer, it would only make it that much harder to go home later.
Yasha followed, a slow ascent made of a glorious length of leg extending, broad torso straightening. Beau loved to watch the way she moved, confident and controlled, like she had memorized every facet of her own body and knew exactly where to place it in space.
“What if we didn’t go back?”
“What?” Beau looked at Yasha’s face, finding her expression thoughtful.
“Who says we have to go back?” Yasha asked, fingers reaching to trace the line of Beau’s cheekbone. “Nothing ties me here but you. And all of your ties you wish to cut.”
Beau’s heart was a painful, thudding, hopeful thing against the inside of her ribcage. Her sternum ached with a desire so fierce she thought the bone might shatter.
“You and me and a little cabin,” Yasha murmured.
The wind picked up again, rushing through the branches and the surrounding leaves ferociously. The trees gave the storm a voice where thunder and lightning could not. Summer storms and their swells were disquieting things, and the hope flaring in Beau’s chest cried out in the same way.
“Yasha,” Beau breathed, sounding strangled. The loose strands of her hair whipped harshly across her cheeks.
“Do you trust me?” Yasha asked, quiet under the howl of the wind.
“Absolutely,” Beau said without hesitation.
The storm broke around them as Yasha grinned.
There was no steady build from a drizzle to a downpour. The rain came in sheets, only broken up by the shelter of the canopy above. A well-worn path carved through the woods, used by travellers and merchants to reach the city. Beau unwound the heavy outer layer of her skirts from her waist, handing one corner to Yasha as she gripped another. Hoisting the garment over their heads, Yasha wound her free arm around Beau’s waist, keeping her close under the shelter of their makeshift parasol.
“Ready?”
Beau’s grin was a wild and tremulous thing. “As I’ll ever be.”
They took off together down the damp path, joyous and giddy, away from the city at their backs.
