Animal of the Day!
Florida Scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Vulnerable
Habitat- Central Florida
Size (Weight/Length)- 76 g; 30 cm
Diet- Insects; Small amphibians; Rodents; Bird eggs
Cool Facts- As hard as it is to believe, the Florida scrub-jay is the only bird truly endemic to Florida. These brightly colored birds have one of the tightest family units in the bird kingdom. Scrub-jay chicks stay with their parents several years after fledging to help raise their younger siblings and keep an eye out for predators. Only once adjacent territory becomes available do the chicks set out on their own to raise a flock of their own. Due to lack of wildfires, the forests that Florida scrub-jays call home have shifted from scrub to thick forest. The jays have difficulty finding proper nesting material and prey.
Rating- 11/10 (White and blue is in season.)

The Florida scrub jay is a North American jay species listed as Vulnerable by CITES. This species is the only bird endemic to the state of Florida, hence its name. The bird is similar to most other scrub jays in appearance, with a blue bib & upperside and soft gray underparts. However, this bird is found solely in Florida scrub habitats. This habitat is characterized by nutrient-poor soil, wildfires, and drought, meaning that the Florida scrub-jay is known for its resilience. They are omnivorous, and feed on acorns, seeds, small mammals, and many other food sources. They are one of few cooperative breeding birds; fledgling Florida scrub-jays remain in their parents' territory for several years, and assist in the raising of their siblings. There has been a push to make this bird the new state bird of Florida, in part due to the bird being endemic to Florida, but also in order to raise much-needed awareness of the species' plight. Development and wildfire suppression has led to a loss of scrub habitat, causing declining numbers of the bird. Another potential danger for this species is interaction with humans; these birds have bold personalities, meaning they are often comfortable feeding from humans. This leads to malnutrition, poisonings, and collisions with vehicles when birds are lured to roadsides with food.

Another Avian August piece, the Florida scrub jay. This one wound up more cartoony than I intended, but it's what I've got.
Kinda feel like this little guy would make a great video game protagonist?
