“…Xander wondered if staring at a computer screen was as bad for his eyes as people claimed. He thought of his dad, and how he’d put on a pair of thick glasses as he looked down at his cell phone, with the text as large as he could make it. “It’s the damn computers,” he’d say, “Ruined my eyes.”

It probably didn’t help that he was nearly seventy years old.

Irrelevant, his father would say, “The man down the street is eighty-two years old, and he doesn’t need glasses. Never used a computer a day in his life, either.”

But, of course, the thought of glasses made him think of Meg, which made his stomach twist and turn with loss. When they’d first met, Meg had worn glasses. They were round and silver, and made Xander notice how big and blue her eyes were. He remembered how she’d try to wear mascara, only to have it rub off onto her lenses when her eyelashes fluttered against the glass.

His phone felt heavy in his pocket. His fingers twitched with the desire to text her, beg her, and announce his remaining love for her.

But he couldn’t do that. She’d made it very clear the third time he’d begged her to come home. He’d knocked on the door to her new apartment and wept as he pleaded with her to return home. Yet, it fell on deaf ears. She scowled at him, her big, blue eyes full of disdain as she crossed her arms over her chest.

Instead, Xander stared at his case files. He had been scribbling into his notepad all morning, keeping his thoughts as organized as possible.

Alex disappears 2.10 → Fortier break in 3.10 → possible abduction attempt 4.10

So, within a three day period, one brother disappears, and the other gets pulled into a car and attacked.

His notes became more specific over time, referencing every detail he could think of.

He clicked through the photos, until he came back to the pictures of the notes from Alex’s apartment. A couple in particular caught his eye.

A 3.10 Coda--Greg

I'll be doing very short codas throughout the day (hopefully) on how different characters find out about Alex and Michael. I'm sure RNM canon is gonna blast past those emotional beats, but I want them. This is selfish, selfish fic.

**I’ll be posting these all at once to AO3 when I’m done.

"So," Michael says, sliding into the chair across from Greg and pushing a fresh beer towards him, "you and DeLuca."

It’s a statement of fact, deceptively neutral, and Michael’s eyes are uncharacteristically unreadable. Greg smiles, cautious, but friendly, and replies, "So, you and my brother."

Michael sort of giggles, giddy and light, and Greg smiles to himself, shoulders going loose, the steel in his spine melting to liquid down his back. He takes a pull from the sweating bottle of Michael's offering.

"Are we about to make the same speech?" he asks with a raised brow. "Hurt them and nothing on either of our planets will keep me from hunting you down?"

Michael snorts and shakes his head, glancing across the bar to where Maria is single-handedly kicking a drunk rancher twice her size out of the Pony without so much as a fluttering eyelash.

"Hell, no." he answers. "Maria DeLuca could handle six of you before breakfast.”

Greg laughs, low and deep in his throat. When he looks up, Alex is just walking in, pausing to scan the room, assessing and reading the space for potential threat, before slipping through the crowd to the bar and leaning across the bar top, opening his arms for Maria. Greg falls silent then, takes another swig of beer and turns the bottle slow in his hand, staring at the label. Michael’s eyes follow Alex across the room, but he doesn’t rise to join him; instead, he waits.

“Yeah,” Greg finally mutters, “I guess the time when Alex needed my protection is long gone.”

Michael’s smile fades and he reaches out across the table and squeezes Greg’s shoulder, eyes warm and dark in the low light of the bar. He lifts his own bottle by the neck with his free hand and tilts it towards Greg.

“To partners stronger than we’ll ever be.”

Greg smiles, thin, but genuine, and taps the butt of his own bottle against Michael’s before raising it to his lips.

“To lovers and fighters.”
