I learned recently that not everyone knows just how massive some types of Gallifreyan flutterwings can be, and I need to remedy this.

Just. You are on Gallifrey, just walking and minding your business when a giant, cloud-sized flutterwing soars overhead. Just fuckkkkk

What native Gallifreyan species are there?

Gallifrey has a diverse range of fauna, both native and introduced. Despite claims of minimal ecological impact, the installation of the Eye of Harmony and millions of years of Time Lord civilisation have significantly altered Gallifrey's original biosphere.

🦋 Invertebrates

Beatitude Flies: Begin as maggots and pupate into golden-winged nocturnal insects. They use nectar to create helium in their bellies and are attracted to light and decay.

Butterflies: Various species flutter across Gallifrey.

Bees: Essential for pollination.

Gullet Grubs: Likely to live in digestive tracts of larger mammals, or similar environments.

Blossom Thieves: Possibly insects that steal nectar or pollen.

Scrubblers: Likely small, cleaning insects.

Neversuch Beetles, Sandbeetles, Waspbeetles: Various beetles.

Dustworms: Likely live in dry, dusty environments.

Scissors Bugs: Possibly predatory insects with sharp mandibles.

Flutterwings: Gigantic insects (3 meters by 25 meters) that never land. Five races include Wild Endeavor, Mandrigal, Silver-Band, Blue Crystal, and Perdition.

Snails

Water-Sligs: Likely aquatic or semi-aquatic molluscs.

Web-Spinning Insects: Including spiders about an inch long.

Other dangerous invertebrates: There are also nasty creatures that live beneath big stones.

🐟 Marine Life

Singing Yaddlefish: Notable for their song, and they can be eaten.

Kittensharks: Hatch from eggs and presumably grow into Catsharks.

Axolotl Salamanders: Amphibious creatures with regenerative abilities.

�� Elapids

Taipan: A venomous snake, 10 metres long.

Venal Snakes: Possibly nest-stealers or highly venomous.

Bat-Snakes: Presumably flying snakes.

Dinosauria: 20-meter-long reptiles resembling brontosaurs with thick chitinous scales and serrated teeth.

🦅 Avians

Owls: Symbol of Rassilon.

Flurry Birds: Likely small, fast-moving birds.

Trunkikes: Game birds whose eggs are often eaten.

Air Diamonds: Fly in the upper atmosphere, possibly crystalline or bioluminescent.

Song Birds: Various species.

Gargantosaurs: Dinosaur-like creatures, twice the size of a hab-bloc, with two legs, vestigial wings (with purple and white feathers), and four eyes.

🦣 Mammals

Plungbolls: Thumbnail-sized furry creatures living in mountains, attach en masse to warm objects.

Taffelshrews: Edible rodent-like mammals.

Fledershrews: Bat-like, mushroom eaters, nearly extinct.

Cobblemice: Mice that sprout wings.

Rovie Mice: Field-dwelling, long-lived if kept safe, sometimes pets. They have short memories.

Moss-Rats: Possibly rodents that live in marshes with moss-like camouflage.

Vex: Burrowing animals.

Gallifreyan Womprats: 1-metre-long rats with fifteen legs.

Pig-Rats: Inhabit the Drylands, presumably combining porcine and rodent traits.

Rabbits

Flubbles: Small six-legged koalas.

Unnamed rounder rabbit-like creatures

Ounce-Apes: Might be tiny monkeys that are particularly agile.

Sealak: Perhaps a kind of seal, often eaten.

Bear-Ass: A donkey-like animal with bear-like qualities.

Horse-Cats: Probably a horse/cat hybrid-like species.

Sagittary: Horse-like creatures.

Elephants

Pig-Bears: Can be trained as pets.

Wolf-like Creatures: With long snouts and black-and-white striped fur, almost as big as adult humanoids.

Broakir: Live in foothills, often hunted for food.

Baanjxx: Arboreal browsers that like to eat hallucinogenic cerub nuts. As a child, the Doctor was kicked by one in the head, apparently.

Cows

Walrus

Gallifreyan Marlot: Purple and unique in all of time and space. Probably a bit cat-like.

House Cats: Revered as symbols of intelligence. Traditionally, Presidents kept them as pets.

🐱 Killer Cats (C.A.T.S)

Killer C.A.T.S: These sapient creatures possess instinctive precognitive powers and cat-like physiology. Known for their lethal gladiatorial contests, they despise Time Lord traditions and live in the Gin-Seng Sector of Southern Gallifrey. Their culture includes mercenaries and oracles; they are telepathic.

🏞️ Ecosystem Preservation

Though Gallifrey's outer ecology has suffered, the Time Lords have used technology to preserve many species. Extinct species have been collected, ensuring none become completely extinct. The more fearsome creatures are contained in the Death Zone, while xeno-zoos hold alien species from other worlds.

So there's your whistlestop tour of the species on Gallifrey. One day, I'll try to put these onto a species distribution map. Oh, by Rassilon's Beard, I just gave myself more work.

9! I'd actually love to know everyone's favourite animal, and wether or not where and when they grew up made any difference in that / influenced it :)

Dela's favourite are cobblemice, there were a lot of them around where she and Patok grew up. Patok hates them for that reason, his favourite are flutterwings.

Rolenva likes tafelshrews. She especially likes to catch them.

Obnik's not much for animals, but he does admire the vortisaurs. He did also grow up in the citadel, so far away from any animals

Lanro's favourite are Gargantosaurs, and they have travelled to the past to see them. They may have lost a leg on that trip

Dolin is from the mountains and his favourite are the plungbolls over there.

Do you miss home at all?

Because sometimes I wish I could go back to days when Gallifrey was around. But no the Council of Time Lords had to put that stuff into place to make it so we couldn't and make us live parallel time lines to Gallifrey.

I get it was so bad Time Lords couldn't come back after being banished or whatever... But now I can't see home again after the Time War. :'(

I even miss the buzz from all the work in Arcadia. I know the Time Lock was for a good reason, but I really want to see House Arpexia again.

NAME: Princess Atta Flutterwing HOMETOWN: The Enchanted Forest OCCUPATION: Princess of the Selva Hollow LOYALIST/REBEL/OTHER: Officially neutral, secretly aiding the rebellion

BIOGRAPHY: When Atta was chosen as a Royal-Talent, she had no idea what was in store for her. There was the usual fare of any fairy Hollow, but then also came the rule of King Magnifico in the nearby town of La Cuidad Des Rosas.

The ability to grant any wish was tempting for fairies in the Hollow, but they soon learned that they were not particularly welcomed by the King, and that often their wishes came at the cost of their fairy heritage or ability to return to the Hollow. As the years went by, less and less fairies made wishes, and Selva Hollow became more isolated. Atta was fine that they kept to themselves--it made things less complicated.

Until suddenly they weren't. When Asha and her rebels showed up in the forest, begging for shelter, Atta was much more cautious than her Queen, who graciously took them in. But over time, Atta has come to see the purpose and promise in their cause, and how fairy-kind might benefit should they succeed. Although publicly, the fairies remain a neutral force in this conflict, secretly they are continuing to provide cover and aid to the rebellion.

Will Atta's happily ever after come in the form of fairies freed from discrimination and tyranny? Or is she to rule a kingdom isolated within the trees?

Your Name: Scad Characters: Angel Milano, Darius Deamonne, Luisa Madrigal, Bones, Devyn Morey, Ralph Reilly, Atta Flutterwing, Ben Wormwood

Pick one of your characters and talk about their growth (we recommend choosing an older character, but it’s up to you!) What about their story has surprised you? What are you proud of? How have they changed from their original inception to now?

When I picked up Darius, I was very determined to make Dadrius happen. It was my big wish for him in last year's questionnaire. I think I can say he's made great progress! His relationships with Hunter and Willow specifically have become very dear to me and it's brought on some Big Feels that Darius has been able to step into the role that Caleb was for him.

Something that has surprised me was Darius reconnecting with his family. It wasn't something I had planned for him, but it sort of fell naturally into place with where I wanted to go for him. While taking on a leadership role is easy, actually genuinely connecting with people is distinctly harder, particularly those he has hurt. The more I grew Darius's family and his history with them, the more I wanted to explore the complicated relationship between self and collective, tradition and modernism, and generational trauma. The story of the Deamonne family doesn't have winners or losers and no side is completely right. Sometimes things happen that can't be fixed with an apology or grand gesture, but will instead take work and time, which Darius is willing to put in. And now that's being cut off from him! What happens next? We'll just have to see.

Pick another character (or the same character if you only have one) and talk a little about where you WANT them to go. What are your plans for them going into the new year? 

I have big plans for Ben coming up. He's still in the process of settling into town, and I want to get him fully integrated by moving somewhere permanent and making some friends, even if just catty bitchy ones. I want him to ingratiate himself throughout the community and make "deeper" connections.

That way, it'll be even worse when he starts making his moves.

So that being said, if you love magic items or talking shit, you should hit him up!

Pick a thread or a plot that you’re proud of and talk about why you loved it. 

I really loved the SATO AU. I was nervous about it at first, because I don't know anything about PJO and didn't grow up with it. But if you give me a chance to make a monster character, I will go for it. I loved being able to write Ralph the Cyclops--it's a lot of what I want to do with Ralph the Giant in canon, but his monstrosity was a lot more front and center here. Plus, I'm a basic bitch who LOVES an animalistic predator/prey ship, so I was all over this lmao

However, I also really enjoyed getting to write Atta in this context! It's so hard to separate her from her canon self, considering being a Royal Talent is so much of her identity. But getting to strip that away and see who she is under all that was a fun exercise and it got her some neat connections once she woke up as well!

And of course introducing Ben through the AU was a bit of a wrench, because we got to see more of who he actually is much earlier than I (or he) had planned for. It's given me a bit of a different trajectory with him that I'm having fun with!

In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 things you love to write about (metaphors? Sibling relationships? Physical description?) and talk about why you enjoy it! 

Last year I chose family, dialogue, and set up/pay off. All of these things are still true! Here are some more:

Otherness: As I said earlier, I love a good monster metaphor. The ways in which society "others" others can be explored through the straight up magic system and lore of the world space but it also can be through queerness, racial identity, neurodivergency, fatness, and so much more that I love weaving into my writing.

Found Family: I grouped this in with family last year, but I do think it's a distinct thing. The family you're born into has such a different dynamic than the one you choose, with neither better or worse, but I have really enjoyed the found families I've been writing this year

Cringe: I love writing losers lmao. It's fun when you get to poke fun at your characters and even more so when you can draw a reaction from someone else.

What major updates have your characters gone through this year? (For example: beginning/ending a relationship, moving, starting a new job, adopting a pet, etc). Think if it as anything you would have put in the #character-updates channel. If you have a pinned post, consider adding these updates so everyone is aware of them in the future.

Angel: Quit her job at the Hunted Deer after Gaston told her she needed to stop OnlyFans, experienced her first Swynlake dream (Regency), had to say goodbye to her first real friend Tanya, got a job at The Lucky Cat Cafe, had her first hookup in years with Boo (and werewolf safe condoms!) wolfed out in order to save Gem from the cops at fight club, got recruited by MAFIA where she met the lead werewolf Reggie, had her second Swynlake dream (SATO), kidnapped a sorcerer prison guard, helped in a prison break, maybe killed a person, then actually killed a person when Gaston confronted her burning down the Hunted Deer after Linnet's attack came to light, all while getting shot. It's been a Big Damn Year for Angel!

Darius: Went on a date with Tofi then got ghosted, formed one sided beef with a woman who doesn't know he exists, experienced his first Swynlake dream (Regency), got closer with co-workers (Shere, Randall), helped Annie after she was magically pranked, was called in to help when Hunter mysteriously conked out for several days, helped Lilith enact her tournament providing abominations, helped funding for Aurora's apothecary, experienced his second Swynlake dream (SATO), joined Lilith's crew for hunting the Philosopher's Stone, joined Hunter and crew to confront Belos and helped them escape, reconnected with his siblings after no-contact for 10 years, met his nibling, chose to stay in Swynlake even with the Isles closing and had Willow move in with him, helped out with Magnifico's solstice party. and met up with old friend and colleague Raine Whispers to begin plotting...Also a pretty big year for Darius!

Luisa: Started off the year with a lot of good family interactions, but then the Regency Swynlake dream opened a big can of Trauma Worms that really shook her up, she opened up to Mirabel about it, she went on dates with Mads and Remy, saved a group of old people with Lightning using their powers, got caught up in Madrigal Drama when Bruno returned for the vow renewal, SATO dream, helped out with the university Magick Grand Prix, had a confrontation with Julieta at their Día de los Muertos party which caused a localized earthquake, began to experience her powers faltering until they completely failed when attempting to lift the town's Christmas tree, made a brief appearance at Georgette's luau at her sister's request but has been noticeably absent otherwise

Bones: Joined the rp (but has canonically been around), Hinted to Hunter he was dead (lol), Auditioned and got a part for Pip's musical, experienced the Regency dream where he killed King and hooked up with Shere, returned to Paris for the first time in years, cast in Much Ado, briefly a servant to Lady Miracle after she took over Snow's body, was kicked out of Hauntley and then had to take it back by breaking the timeloop, was confronted by his old necromancer in the timeloop, confirmed to Hunter he was dead (lmao), SATO dream, had his 300th birthday

Devyn: Joined the rp (but has canonically been around), started reconnecting with people after having taken a year off from school, did set design for Much Ado, participated in the Clawthorne Tournament (and placed fifth!), started classes again in the summer including a writing class for Professor Sanchez, accepted into his exclusive class where they became a Magnifique, returned to the dorms for the fall semester and became roommates with Sid, took all Sanchez classes for the fall semester, painted Nick's van, SATO dream, helped ease a haunted book from the library with their friends, spent winter break in the dorms with Sid, had a New Year's kiss??

Ralph: Returned to Swynlake after spending the last decade in Denmark living with giants, reconnected with old friends (Elsa, Star, Chief, Tofi) and made new ones (Edward, Georgette, Boo), catered for prom where he was accosted by Moon and became infamous for shrimp, accepted money from Georgette's dad to be her bodyguard (but mostly is just her yes man), made up(?) with Moon(?), attended Ren and Martin's wedding as Elsa's plus one, saved Boo from falling off a ladder (which he knocked over), kind of started working at Ice Queen under the table, attempted to help fix the theater's broken door, continues to cater for events

Atta: Joined the rp (but has canonically been around), oversaw the late fairy flotilla, connected with her fairies on issues around the Hollow, attended campaign events for Vidia and confronted her and Tink, SATO dream, asked fairies what they thought of Vidia's campaign, became friends with Ben (backdated one-shots are coming OTL)

Ben: Came to Swynlake under the guise of research on magical objects, experienced his first Swynlake dream which really shook him up, got into some Twitter fights which birthed an interest in fairies, got a job as an archivist at Town Hall, reconnected with Order people, spent entirely too much bidding on Phillip Knightley, had his date with Phillip which prompted an Instagram post where people mistook them for a couple, danced with Giselle at the election ball, became friends with Atta (I promise it's coming!!)

Talk about your dash reply style and your Discord reply style! (And if applicable, also your doc reply style). What do you like about each type of interaction? What is something you feel is difficult? Do you have preferences regarding how many times you’re tagged per day, or do you prefer for your replies to be queued for a certain amount of time?

Dash: I'd like to think I've made progress on my bad habit of feeling like I need to respond to everything all at once when it comes to dash posts. However, I'm not where I'd like to be in terms of reply speed and how fast I finish threads, so that's something to work on in the new year! I'm also trying to let go of the notion that my best writing should be in my replies--it doesn't need to and it's okay if not every reply is a gem! Either way I love a good dash reply, I love using gifs, and I love seeing everything come together and look back at it all.

Discord: This is something I still need to get better at. I feel like I do pretty good when I'm online and around, but it's easy for me to fall off once something else comes up and then I don't come back to it. I am always up for continuing a Discord thread even after the event so HMU if you ever want to!

Docs: I'm still getting used to this, but I do like docs! I think it's a great way to do group threads which I've really been enjoying, especially with all the bigger plots going on. This is another one where I need to remind myself that my writing doesn't have to be perfect and it's better to have it done than "good".

In terms of all of these, I don't mind being tagged as much as I need! In fact, please poke me if I need to be tagged more than once! This is a big resolution for me this year.

And now, a wishlist! Jot down a few themes or stories or genres etc that you want to maybe pursue in the upcoming year! (i.e. a good ol’ fashion forbidden romance, maybe you want to dig deep into racial identity etc) This doesn’t have to necessarily be attached to any characters or stories you have now– it’s just meant to help you see for yourself what kind of stories call to your heart.

Starting off generally:

Friendships: Some of my fave relationships in this rp have been unexpected, while others were planned from the start, and I love them both! If you ever think our characters would be friends, please feel free to reach out. Let's throw them together and see what happens!

Romance: I didn't really get to explore this a lot in the last year, so it's something I want to get into now! It doesn't necessarily have to be long term ships but going on dates, ill-advised hookups, weird pining, and everything in between, HMU!

Magic and worldbuilding: I think the worldbuilding in this rp is so cool and I'd love to explore it more with my characters. If ever you have any weird ideas, I'm always listening. Especially with Ben as the resident Magick-Eater, I think there could be some really cool drama there

Angel: Get closer with her MAFIA buds, maybe some more hookups, get closer to and recruit other werewolves for MAFIA, continue (and potentially find?) the search for her father, contend with her non-MAFIA relationships now that she's committed to them, help MAFIA towards their goals including any and all illegal activity

Darius: Grow into his role as a leader and mentor of...a growing rebellion?? The upcoming year is heavily involved with BI plotting, but there's still a chance to sneak in a date if you want ;)

Luisa: Contend with the dysfunction of her powers! This is obviously a huge plot for her, as being the super strong helper around town is her entire identity and personality. During this rough time I'd love for her to connect with people, finally make some deeper friends, and figure out who she is outside of what she can do.

Devyn: Devyn is getting all wound up in the Magnifique drama, along with some big news dropping early in the year. I'd love for outsiders looking in to start warning them the dangers of what they're getting into. But also, I'd love for Devyn to support other people in their plots!

Ralph: I've really loved the way Ralph has connected with people and would love to expand that! Become a part of the community! Finally start to feel like he belongs somewhere! Also more shenanigans!

Atta: She's also got some big plots coming up this year. Like it or not she WILL be interacting with more people so come bother my babe. I'd also really like to see her be forced to face her gender identity issues more head on

Ben: More talking shit, more Twitter drama, more exploration of his abilities
