Archive Classics: Typesetting Fics
TL; DR: the internet is temporary!!! printed books (for your own private amusement) are forever!!!
What I do:
Basically, I choose fics that I think deserve to be printed and typeset them using a software called Adobe InDesign. InDesign is the professional standard in the industry, but there are definitely easier (and cheaper!) options for formatting.
Once I've chosen a fic, there a few different things I have to decide: the font, glyphs, book size, and the hors-texte (title page, contents, etc).
Then, I go about copy + pasting the text into the software, and formatting them. Usually, that just means deleting the blank space of lines that for some reason appears between paragraphs.
Every element, and I mean every single element, is designed for the reader's comfort. At no point should the reader feel lost or unable to continue because of the way the text is formatted. This means using serif fonts instead of sans-serif fonts for the body text and making sure that there aren't any widows/orphan lines. I have specific justification settings so that the spacing between words and letters are even and smooth to the reader's eye.
I also think about headers and page numbers more than you would expect. Should the page numbers be on top or bottom? Centered or at the corners. Should I have headers at all? And if so, what should they say?
When I began, and I still do this occasionally, I grabbed books off my shelves and examined their formatting. Then I'd question why they made this design choice or that. All publishers have their special little quirks and features, and if I spotted something I liked, I would incorporate that into my own works. For example, Penguin Classics love their classic serif fonts and headers. Barnes and Noble Classics have a feature in their hors-texte that is their "From the Pages Of" section.
My favorite part is creating the cover. If you couldn't tell based off the title "Archive Classics," I *borrowed* Penguin Classic's grid. I love to use paintings or other kinds of artwork (like Étienne-Louis Boullée's architectural drawings for Fractals)
Why I Do This:
While there are many amazing and necessary reasons to read e-books, I enjoy the physicality of a printed book. Nothing can beat the sensation of turning the next page, the smell of paper, or the weight of your next great adventure in your hands. Fanfiction more than deserves to be experienced in that way too.
But also, I've always had a lingering suspicion regarding the temporal nature of digital media and of the internet in general. Fanfiction, in particular, are at risk of disappearing forever, and while you can obvs download it (which I always always do), there's a slight chance that you may not be able to access the technology in order to view it. Books don't require laptops or phones or internet service.
It's a silly movie, but Leave the World Behind (2023) showcases this perfectly, albeit with streaming services and dvds.
Finally, with the ever-changing landscape of the internet and technology, who knows if say archaeologists would be able to access ao3 in a 100 or even 50 years. Look at USB-As, and how quickly they're going out of use. Physical media like printed books will certainly last for decades longer. My ultimate (and idealistic) goal is to have a physical, printed library of fanfiction for both private enjoyment and for the academic study of fanfiction in the anthropological and literary fields. The latter will most likely not happen in my lifetime (if ever at all), but a girl can dream!
Copyright
This is slightly sketchy but from what I can tell from my research is that most sites don't give an af if you print like one copy for yourself and you do not print en-masse or start selling them. So like Manacled. Don't do what those kids did and put up your copies on etsy. I don't. I print this for myself and myself only. And I've never gotten a cease and desist letter or anything like that.
Requests are open: if you have a fic you think deserves the archive classics treatment, lmk! I do not accept payment. This is all free.
Examples!
A Current Cover I'm Working On:
This one is a linen wrap, which means it has flaps!

PotO: Erik's house floor plan (book based)

While there already exists a pretty cool floor plan of Erik's house (this one) it's constructed around the idea that there is a shore or rock formation on which the house is built and that it looks like an actual house. That didn't sit with me as the book clearly says that the house is built inside the double casing of the foundation, so I made my own model. And yes, I totally built it in the Sims.
Things we know from Leroux that helped me build the model:
The placement of the house in between the inner and outer wall of the foundation suggests that it would be roughly rectangle-shaped
There must be some kind of small platform on which you could step out from the boat. A hidden mechanism must then move a part of the wall to reveal the actual door to the house, similar to the entrance from the third cellar
The entrance from the Lake opens directly to the drawing room. I'm no expert on Victorian architecture but it appears to me that a drawing room is basically a living and based on some photos of Victorian houses I saw I concluded that there'd be a fireplace and possibly some shelves for books, even if they are not directly mentioned in the novel. Erik would also surely have a rug. Persian of course ;-)
A door in the drawing room leads directly into the Louis-Philippe room. Connected directly to it there is also an en-suite bathroom. There is also an additional door that supposedly leads to the Torture Chamber. There is a fireplace (Erik/Christine mention the scorpion and grasshopper boxes on the mantelpiece), a bed set, some kind of sofa, and a chest of drawers.
Considering how the Torture Chamber is shaped and what it does, as well as the fact that Daroga is unable to find the hidden latch on the wall that the Chamber shares with Louis-Philippe (the wall on which the peeping window must be located) I concluded that the door mentioned by Christine must actually lead to a sort of oddly shaped room/corridor that goes around the chamber where the heating system and mechanical elements are located (this unfortunately couldn't be properly rendered due to the limitations of the game). From there you can access the actual Chamber by pushing a plain frameless door. Since it opens inwards and has no handles, in order to open it from the Chamber, you'd have to resort to some kind of spring system as described in the book.
We know that the dining is accessed from the drawing room. Considering it's the dining, it must also be connected to a kitchen and pantry from which, I'd assume, one could access the cellars with wine, water, and whatever else Erik might keep in there
After dinner, Erik takes Christine's hand and shows her his room. There is no mention of them first going back to the drawing room. That led me to believe that the door to Erik's room is located in the dining room. The drawing room has enough doors as is anyway.
Leroux mentions a pipe organ that takes up an entire wall. I know organs are large but I think it would be the narrower one. Then we have the coffin in the middle (unfortunately the Sims didn't have anything I could use as the canopy), a desk the exact location of which is unknown but I'd place it near the organ, possibly some wardrobe or chest of drawers, and probably a door to another en-suite bathroom as I imagine he wouldn't be using the one attached to the Louis-Philippe.
If you like the model feel free to use it / reference it in your fanart or fanfic :-)

Islamic Art - Tessellation (LO1)
Tessellation are very popular in Islamic and Arabic architecture
Walls, floors and other surfaces are often covered in these designs that expand into infinity
Islamic art is what pushed MC Esher's art into a new direction
three different forms of islamic art include arabesque, geometric patterns and calligraphy
Some common patterns are based on multi angled polygonal shapes - 8, 10, 12, and 16 point stars can be formed from these shapes
History
The use of animal and human images are rarely used in islamic art, hence the use of more geometric shapes
from the 9th century onwards, sophisticated geometric patterns based on polygonal tessellation began to appear in Islamic art
islamic patterns are created to lead the viewer to an understanding of underlying reality
believed to be the bridge to the spiritual realm, the instrument to purify the mind and soul
Pattern Formation
Many designs are built on squares and circles which are typically repeated, overlapped and interlaced to form patterns
the 8 pointed star is a recurring motif
symmetries including reflections and rotations can be seen in the intricate patterns, suggesting infinity
constructed using grids that require rulers and compasses to draw
these patterns typically can be found on mosques in islamic countries
These patterns influenced western art greatly and can even be found in the Alhambra in Granada, Spain

Debout tous (txt 2011)

Blog 4: Tools-Mediums in The Digital Era - A Study of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, nestled as the fourth film in the original prequel trilogy, stands out as a fan-favourite within the expansive Star Wars saga. Delving into the movie through the prism of medium specificity illuminates intriguing connections with the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk—a notion typically associated with architecture but extending its influence into diverse artistic realms, including cinema, theatre, and opera. Gesamtkunstwerk, often observed in depictions of dystopian or utopian societies, takes on a distinctive form in Revenge of the Sith. While the concept traditionally gravitates towards equitable and utopian settings, this Star Wars instalment explores the intricate interplay between the forces of light and dark, navigating the complexities of the Force. The Sith's pursuit of revenge and their eventual ascendancy to power crafts a vision of an ideal society, one without Jedi, characterized by limited freedom, and firmly under Sith's control. The film's commitment to certain principles contributes to its reception, weaving a narrative with well-defined characters seamlessly integrated into the rich world of the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars, broadly categorized as a space opera, takes on a new dimension when contemplated as an actual opera play. Such a transformation, however, introduces potential challenges that could impact the immersive experience and character development inherent in the cinematic medium. Shifting Revenge of the Sith to a traditional opera format might alter the dynamics of audience engagement, redirecting focus towards musical and vocal performances and potentially diminishing the visual spectacle that defines Star Wars. The film's visual design, the largeness of its space battles, and the emotional depth conveyed through the characters' expressions could face constraints in a theatre setting. The cinematic prowess of Revenge of the Sith lies in its utilization of the strengths inherent to the medium. The visual elements, combined with a compelling narrative, create an immersive experience that might prove challenging to replicate in the confines of a traditional opera. The film's success extends beyond its storyline, encompassing the masterful use of cinema's unique attributes to transport audiences into the captivating realm of a galaxy far, far away.

The Ferrari Electric Car Lease could be live in 2025
It was no secret that the iconic Ferrari brand was going into all-electric technology. As our dedicated section has set out (for well over a year), the Italian performance brand will investing into battery technology more heavily in the run-up to 2030 / 2035. Already some of their hyper performance vehicles have included some form of hybrid aspect, with the move into plug-in (PHEV) models around 2020. And there was a firm commitment to the all-electric facets, with both the retail and motorsport aspects making big statements about the future of BEV within their demographic. And with hybrids now forming around 50% of the sales, the Ferrari group are moving into pure EV tech via their “e-Building” which opened in 2023 and which was introduced to get the group ready for the next stage of their company life. However, in a recent announcement the Chairman John Elkann confirmed that the Ferrari team are formally announcing the new all-electric road car on 9 October 2025.
The upcoming Elettrica (as it is strongly rumoured to be called) looks to be emerging in the SUV format as we have pictured here, which effectively emulates the Purosangue (which more recently launched). But this doesn’t mean that hypercars will also follow, with the F80 self-charging hybrid a good example of what the team can create. The lessons learned from this technology and the 800V charging architecture should hopefully allow the brand to more seamlessly move into the zero-emission aspect of the market. And with in-house battery production, the “E-Cells” laboratory, together with profit increases to £1.3 billion, the prancing horse is looking set to enter a new world for the brand. The group are also suggesting that bikes could also follow the cars in this aspect to. Could we see an actual production car land in 2025? There are strong rumours that calculated and articulate investment and RnD has been put in place to make this a reality sooner rather than later. For keen enthusiasts of the Ferrari brand, make sure to check out the GB site (https://www.ferrari.com/en-GB) to monitor any updates. In the meantime, you will just have to enjoy cars like the 12Cilindri, Roma, Pursosangue and the SF90!

2025 Photography Trends: How Technology is Reshaping the Visual Arts Industry
Introduction

The photography landscape continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, with technological advancements creating new possibilities for both professional photographers and enthusiasts. As we move through 2025, several emerging trends are fundamentally changing how images are captured, edited, and shared with the world.
This article explores the most significant photography trends shaping the industry today, from AI-powered editing tools to sustainable photography practices. Whether you're a seasoned professional looking to stay competitive or an amateur photographer wanting to elevate your craft, understanding these trends will help you navigate the ever-changing world of visual storytelling.
AI Integration in Photography Workflows
Artificial intelligence has moved beyond simple auto-enhancement features to become an integral part of sophisticated professional photography workflows. The latest developments include:
Intelligent Composition Assistance
AI-powered cameras now offer real-time suggestions for optimal composition, analyzing scenes to identify leading lines, rule-of-thirds opportunities, and potential distractions. These tools serve as digital assistants that help photographers make split-second decisions while shooting.
Advanced Subject Recognition
Modern cameras can instantly recognize and track multiple subjects simultaneously, adjusting focus and exposure settings accordingly. This technology is particularly valuable for event photography where capturing fleeting moments is essential.
Automated Post-Processing
AI-driven editing software can now perform complex tasks such as sky replacement, portrait enhancement, and selective color adjustments with minimal human intervention. While these tools won't replace the artistic eye of experienced photographers, they significantly streamline post-production workflows.
Computational Photography Revolution
The line between traditional photography and computational imaging continues to blur, with smartphones and dedicated cameras leveraging powerful processors to create images that were previously impossible.
Multi-Frame Synthesis
Rather than capturing single exposures, modern cameras collect data from multiple frames shot in rapid succession. This technique allows for:
Extended dynamic range without traditional HDR artifacts
Superior low-light performance through noise averaging
Focus stacking for front-to-back sharpness in macro photography
Light Field Photography
Emerging light field technology captures not just the intensity and color of light but also its directional information. This allows photographers to adjust focus, depth of field, and perspective after the image is taken, fundamentally changing the relationship between shooting and editing.
Immersive Photography Formats
As display technology evolves, photographers are exploring new formats that go beyond traditional two-dimensional images.
360-Degree Photography
Omnidirectional cameras have become more accessible, allowing photographers to create immersive environments that viewers can explore interactively. This format has found particular application in:
Real estate and architectural photography
Virtual tourism
Event documentation
Commercial photography for immersive advertising
Volumetric Capture
More advanced than simple 360-degree images, volumetric photography captures three-dimensional space, allowing viewers to move through scenes rather than simply rotating their viewpoint. While still emerging, this technology promises to transform how we experience photographs in virtual and augmented reality environments.
Sustainable and Ethical Photography Practices
Environmental consciousness has reached the photography industry, influencing equipment choices, shooting practices, and business models.
Eco-Friendly Equipment
Camera manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing:
Recycled materials in camera bodies and accessories
Energy-efficient electronics
Biodegradable packaging
Extended product lifecycles through firmware updates rather than frequent hardware replacements
Responsible Nature Photography
Wildlife and landscape photographers are adopting stricter ethical guidelines, including:
Maintaining safe distances from wildlife
Avoiding habitat disruption
Truthful representation of natural scenes
Using drone photography responsibly in sensitive environments
Carbon-Neutral Photography Businesses
Professional photographers are offsetting their carbon footprints through:
Remote client consultations to reduce travel
Digital-first delivery models
Partnering with environmental organizations
Choosing renewable energy for studios and editing workspaces
Hybrid Photography Services
The distinction between still photography and videography continues to diminish, with clients increasingly expecting professionals to deliver both formats.
Cinemagraphs and Living Stills
These hybrid formats combine the compositional strength of photography with subtle motion elements, creating compelling visuals for digital advertising and social media. Mastering these formats requires understanding both photographic composition and video principles.
Stills Extracted from Video
High-resolution video cameras now capture footage at quality levels suitable for extracting professional-grade still images. This technique is transforming how photographers approach fast-moving subjects in sports, wildlife, and family photography sessions with energetic children.
Multi-Format Deliverables
Clients now routinely expect photographers to provide packages that include:
Traditional high-resolution images
Social media-optimized content
Short video clips
Behind-the-scenes material
This shift requires photographers to develop broader skillsets and invest in versatile equipment capable of producing various content types.
Niche Specialization in Photography
As competition intensifies, many photographers are finding success by developing expertise in highly specialized niches rather than offering general services.
Personal Brand Photography
The rise of entrepreneurs, influencers, and small businesses has created strong demand for personal branding photography – custom imagery that helps individuals establish a consistent visual identity across platforms. This specialty combines elements of portrait photography with commercial and lifestyle approaches.
Technical and Scientific Photography
Specialized photographers are finding lucrative opportunities in fields such as:
Medical and forensic imaging
Industrial documentation
Microscopy and scientific visualization
Architectural documentation
These niches often require specialized equipment and technical knowledge but face less competition than consumer-focused photography genres.
Cultural Documentation
As communities recognize the importance of preserving their heritage, photographers specializing in cultural documentation are finding support for long-term projects that capture traditional practices, celebrations, and changing landscapes before they disappear.
Mobile Photography Evolution
Smartphone cameras continue to close the gap with dedicated equipment, changing how both amateurs and professionals approach image-making.
Computational Mobile Photography
The latest smartphones leverage powerful processors and multiple lenses to overcome their physical limitations, producing results that rival dedicated cameras in many situations. This technology has democratized photography while also providing professionals with capable backup tools that fit in a pocket.
Mobile-First Workflows
Recognizing the ubiquity of smartphone photography, software developers have created sophisticated mobile editing applications that support RAW processing, advanced color grading, and even AI-powered manipulations previously possible only on desktop systems.
Cross-Device Ecosystems
The most effective modern workflows allow seamless transition between mobile and desktop environments, with images automatically syncing across devices. This flexibility enables photographers to begin editing on location via mobile devices and finish the process on larger screens later.
Community-Based Photography Projects
Photography is becoming increasingly collaborative, with technology enabling new forms of community engagement.
Crowdsourced Documentation
Organizations are coordinating distributed photography networks to document events, environmental changes, and social movements from multiple perspectives simultaneously. These projects provide comprehensive visual records that no single photographer could achieve.
Collaborative Storytelling
Multiple photographers now frequently work together on narrative projects, combining their unique perspectives and specialties to create richer visual stories than would be possible individually. This approach is particularly effective for complex subjects that benefit from diverse viewpoints.
The Future of Photography Education
The ways photographers learn their craft are evolving alongside the technical aspects of the medium.
Micro-Learning and Specialized Tutorials
Rather than comprehensive courses, many photographers now prefer focused, problem-specific learning resources that address immediate challenges. This approach allows for just-in-time education that can be applied to current projects.
Virtual Mentorship Programs
Established photographers are connecting with emerging talent through virtual mentorship programs that provide personalized guidance without geographic limitations. These relationships combine the benefits of traditional apprenticeships with modern flexibility.
Practical Application Over Theory
Photography education increasingly emphasizes hands-on assignments and real-world projects over theoretical knowledge, preparing students for the actual challenges they'll face in professional contexts.
Photography Business Model Innovations
Economic pressures and changing client expectations are forcing photographers to rethink their business approaches.
Subscription-Based Photography Services
Some photographers now offer subscription services that provide clients with regular content updates rather than one-time sessions. This model is particularly effective for:
Businesses needing consistent social media content
Families wanting to document growth and milestones throughout the year
Brands requiring ongoing product photography as inventory changes
Diversified Revenue Streams
Successful photography businesses increasingly rely on multiple income sources, including:
Direct client services
Stock photography
Educational content
Presets and editing tools
Print sales and merchandise
This diversification provides financial stability during seasonal fluctuations in client work.
Conclusion
The photography landscape of 2025 offers both challenges and opportunities for visual creators. While technological developments continue to lower technical barriers, they simultaneously raise expectations for what professional photography can achieve.
By embracing these emerging trends while maintaining focus on the fundamental principles of visual storytelling, photographers can navigate this evolving environment successfully. Whether adopting new technologies, specializing in growing niches, or developing innovative business models, the key to success remains the same: creating meaningful images that resonate with viewers and fulfill client needs.
For photographers looking to stay at the forefront of these industry developments, continuous learning and adaptability are essential. The most successful professionals will be those who view these changes not as threats to traditional practices but as opportunities to expand their creative possibilities and deliver even more compelling visual content.
