Joseph McGill Jr. coming to Natchez for two-day program on slave dwellings

NATCHEZ, Miss. -- Joseph McGill Jr., a renowned authority on slave dwellings, is coming to Natchez for a two-day program that will feature a lecture and a living history campfire conversation.

The lecture, which is titled, “The Education Value of Sleeping in Slave Dwellings: Mississippi Edition,” will be presented at 6 p.m. Friday, April 14 at Historic Natchez Foundation. The campfire conversation will be held at 6 p.m., April 15 at the Auburn slave quarters.

Both events are free and open to the public. They are part of McGill’s nationally acclaimed Slave Dwelling Project. The two-day program is being hosted by Historic Natchez Foundation, Natchez National Historical Park, and Our Restoration Nation.

McGill is a history consultant for Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, S.C., and the founder and director of the Slave Dwelling Project. Through the Slave Dwelling Project, he has arranged for people to “sleep in extant slave dwellings,” providing experiences that “brought much needed attention to these often-neglected structures that are vitally important to the American built environment,” McGill said in a biographical sketch.

Since 2018, McGill has conducted more than 250 overnights in about 100 different sites in 19 states and the District of Columbia.

As a field officer for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, McGill worked to revitalize the Sweet Auburn commercial district in Atlanta, Ga., and to develop a management plan for the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area.

McGill is a former executive director of the African American Museum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a former director of history and culture at Penn Center, St. Helena Island, South Carolina. He has also served as a National Park Service park ranger at Fort Sumter National Monument in Charleston.

McGill holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional English from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, S.C. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

McGill’s work is recognized by authors and historians. He is featured in the books “Confederates in the Attic” by Tony Horwitz and “Behind the Big House” by Jodi Skipper.

In 2018, she decided to run for New York Attorney General after the former attorney general resigned. She won the general election on November 6, 2018, with 61.9 percent of the vote. Day 7 - Cape Disappointment to Astoria, Oregon

End of the first week, start of a new state. Woke up at around 6:30 to a thick fog. After a quick bathroom break, not five minutes later it had cleared up. Expecting that to be a recurring morning pattern for a bit.

Crossing from Washington to Astoria involves going over the Columbia River. The Columbia River has the largest mouth to the ocean of any river in the USA, and apparently only of the largest in the world. That means a long bridge crossing over the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Nearly 7km long. It has a bit of a reputation for cycles as potentially harrowing. Little shoulder, fast cars, lots of traffic, and a big climb near the end.

Josh had heard the same about the bridge, so we decided to try to leave camp early and cycle together to hopefully cross the bridge at a quieter time. I think that worked out well, as it wasn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. The climb was similar to Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver which I've done a few times, and the traffic was light and respectful.

The bike ride to the bridge was nice, too. Through a couple small towns, and near some historic fort areas. But we mostly just flew by them as we were on a mission.

Across the bridge we parted ways, he's continuing on down the coast, and I'm having a rest day of sorts in Astoria.

I spent time exploring the downtown area of Astoria, grabbed some late breakfast, and then decided to bike up to Astoria Column. I may have had better ideas in my life, it's quite a climb on a bike. But I saved $5 in parking! And the view from the top was incredible. Once up there, you can climb up the 150 or so stairs to the top of the column for an epic view. A little daunting at the top if you are scared of heights!

Biked down from the viewpoint to a park to dry out my tent, then on to the motel for the night to do some laundry, cleaning, etc.

The motel is up on a crest, so another climb on my rest day, but seems to be worth it. Will definitely sleep well tonight, and looking forward to hitting the coast tomorrow!

Although he was Senior Officer of the U.S. Army, Wilkinson was also a traitor on the payroll of the Spanish Viceroy. It came out later that Spanish bribes dwarfed Wilkinson’s legal army salary.

Historians still debate how tainted Senator John Smith of Ohio was in the whole treasonous conspiracy. Was he an innocent friend Burr manipulated? Or was he a willing accomplice who kept up a smokescreen to hide his nefarious involvement?

The Vice President at the time was Aaron Burr, who in that role served as President of the Senate. Smith and Burr got along famously and Smith continued to support Burr even after the fatal duel with Hamilton.

It is known that Burr entrusted Smith with large sums of conspiratorial cash, which Smith dispersed on Burr’s instructions to active participants in the conspiracy. It is known that Smith knew Burr’s whereabouts and kept this intelligence confidential.

On the other hand, Smith, in apparent innocence, wrote to Burr asking if the rumors of traitorous conspiracy were true. Burr responded by fiercely denying the allegations. Nevertheless, after Burr’s plot imploded, John Quincy Adams introduced a resolution recommending Smith’s expulsion from the Senate because of his association with Burr. The measure failed to gather enough votes, but Smith knew his clout had evaporated and resigned from the Senate.

Cincinnati author William Henry Venable published, in 1901, a novel based on Burr’s empire conspiracy titled "Dream of Empire, or, The House of Blennerhassett."  That novel includes a (probably) invented romance between Burr and a woman with the unlikely name of Salome Rosemary, who was staying with the Smiths in Terrace Park when Burr visited.

It is possible that Salome Rosemary was based on a real person because it was well known that Aaron Burr was an incorrigible womanizer and he very likely chased some skirts on his travels through Cincinnati. Venable also records a piece of possibly accurate legend about Elder Smith’s house. According to the novelist, Burr scratched something into a glass window pane of Smith’s house.

“Sitting on the porch in the Sabbath twilight beside Salome, Burr softly intoned his regret that in the morning he must part from her. Sportfully he drew from her finger a diamond ring. ‘Do you want it back after all these years?’ she murmured. ‘No, dear, you shall have it again in a moment.’ He turned to a window, and with the sparkling stylus incised some delicate characters upon a pane of glass. Then he returned the ring to its owner, who, after perusing the inscription, looked round into his face, her own radiant with happiness. The window-pane remained unbroken for nearly a century, and the writing on it was always shown to strangers visiting the old historic homestead. The cutting diamond traced two names upon the glass those of Senator Smith's transitory guests. Many a sentimental girl, pausing over the double inscription, and mildly condemning Burr, has wondered whatever became of Salome Rosemary.”

Elder Smith’s house still stands. It has been owned by various members of the Lindell family for more than 80 years now. Tradition has it that the old house on the farm was once occupied by Burr and his friends during the progress of the Blennerhassett Island conspiracy, and that Burr wrote his name on the glass during a discussion of ways and means of carrying out the plot. The nature of the tradition may be doubted, but the autograph is certainly genuine.”

Senator John Smith is all but forgotten, except for two Cincinnati streets. Today, there is only a nubbin left of Smith Street, running west of the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge ramp, and John Street, from Court north to York in the West End is barely noticed by commuters these days. Paul R. Williams’s Early Commercial Works

By the 1930s, Paul R. Williams’s architectural career had taken off, he was hiring more staff for his firm, and he had built an impressive portfolio of private residences, yet like all architects, Williams yearned for important commercial contracts (3). In 1926, he had collaborated with Norman Marsh to build the Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles, that would later become an important site to the civil rights movement in that area (7). One of Williams’s first solo commercial commissions was designing the interiors for the Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue department store in 1938 (6). The following year he built the headquarters of Music Corporation of America (MCA) also in Beverly Hills (8). The clients hired Williams for their project because they envisioned their offices to look more like an English Georgian Revival style home than a typical office building of the time (3). He also designed the Arrowhead Springs Hotel in 1940. In 1941 Williams took on an international commission designing the Hotel Nutibara in Columbia (8).

During World War II Williams closed his architectural office in order to take on work for the military. “In 1942 Williams designs 125 housing units for the Army at Fort Huachuca,” 8 and over the following years he worked with the Allied Architects on the Roosevelt Naval Base Project.  Also during the war years, like European architect Jean Prouvé, Williams became interested in providing low-cost pre-fabricated metal housing. Williams established the Standard Demountable Homes Company of California in the mid-forties. The firm built mainly “Quonset-style homes [which] quickly fell out of favor after the war” 8.

Williams’s Post-war Buildings of the Mid-Century

After the World War II Williams teamed up with architect A. Quincy Jones, who had worked in Williams’s office in the years before the war. The two architects worked on several “projects in Palm Springs, including the Palm Springs Tennis Club (1947) and the Town & Country (1948) and Romanoff's on the Rocks (1948) restaurants” (6).

Williams’s most notable post war works include, the West View Hospital (1947), his 1949 additions to the Beverly Hills Hotel, the Al Jolson Memorial (1951), renovations to the Knickerbocker Hotel in Los Angeles (1954), the Frank Sinatra House (1955), and the Founder’s Church of Religious Science (1960).

During the 1950s Williams began a lifelong friendship with the popular comedian Danny Thomas when Thomas commissioned Williams to work on renovations to his existing home. When Thomas shared his vision of a children’s hospital open to all children regardless of race or religion that would offer free care, Williams was whole-heartedly on board. He designed the hospital gratis as an act of love for his dear friend (3). Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital was built in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962, but was demolished in the early 1990s to make way for a larger more modern hospital (3).

In 1960, Williams joined the Los Angeles Airport (LAX) planning and design team (1). He was not, however, the architect of the airport’s iconic Theme Building as many believe. It was designed by Gin Wong of Pereira & Luckman but [a] photo by Julius Shulman cemented the urban myth (5).

Paul R. Williams published two books on residential architecture: “The Small Home of Tomorrow (1945) and New Homes for Today (1946)” (5). He also wrote the essay "I am a Negro" first published in the 1937 and reprinted in Ebony in 1986 (5).

Paul R. Williams’s Contributions to the African American Community

According to Paul R. Williams’s grandson Paul Hudson, Williams was instrumental in working on behalf of Los Angeles’s African-American community and in supporting its leaders and businesses. For his Golden State Life Insurance Building (1949) he commissioned two murals depicting the struggles of African Americans in United States history. A memorial to Williams was built in that building when it underwent a restoration in 2005 (3).

In 1946 along with Dr. H. Claude Hudson, Williams founded the Broadway Federal Bank. Its mission was to loan mortgages to African-Americans, and enabled many African-Americans to realize their dreams of home ownership. The bank also provided the financing on the 1960 Stall Case Study home designed by Pierre Koenig. Due to the house’s experimental nature, the owners could not obtain funding through traditional banks (3).

Williams’s Housing Project Work

Although Williams is best known for his mansions for movie stars and film moguls, he did design low-cost housing. Williams worked with another African-American architect Hilyard Robinson on the first federally funded public housing project in the Unites States Langston Terrace,  Washington, D.C. in 1938 and later on the Pueblo del Rio project (1941) in southeast Los Angeles. Williams also designed, Carver Park, a segregated development in Henderson, Nevada. It opened in 1943. “Many of the units were destroyed between 1994 and 1999” (5). Williams was the Chief Architect on the The Hacienda Village Housing Project, other architect who collaborated on the project were Adrian Wilson, Richard J. Neutra, Walter Wurdeman and Welton Becket (5).

Paul R. William’s Endangered Legacy 

In 1973 after a five-decade long career Paul R. Williams closed his firm and, he  retired (6). He spent his final years devoted to his family and to causes supporting the African-American community. He died on January 23, 1980; his friend Danny Thomas gave the eulogy at Williams’ funeral (3).

Williams received many tributes and awards for his work during his lifetime among them, “the AIA Award of Merit, the NAACP Spingarn Medal, and USC’s Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1957, he became first African American to become an AIA Fellow (1). He was “posthumously awarded the AIA's 2017 Gold Medal, America's highest honor for an architect. Williams is the first African American to receive the AIA Gold Medal” (1). In 2020 a documentary about his life and work aired on PBS (3).

Tragically all of Williams’s business documents were destroyed in 1992 in a fire at the Broadway Federal Bank in the riots that took place in Los Angeles in the aftermath of the verdict in the Rodney King trial. Luckily, Williams’s blueprints and drawings had been saved by his granddaughter Karen E. Hudson who had borrowed them from the bank to do research on her grandfather’s career (3).

While several of Williams’s buildings have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places (6), an astonishing number of important buildings have not survived; notable among them are the Ambassador Hotel (1), the Frank Sinatra House, Perino’s Restaurant, the Sunset Plaza Apartments (3), the Claude A. Wayne House (1926), The George S. Seward House (1928), E. L. Cord House, aka Cordhaven (1932), The Lucy and Desi Arnaz Ranch (1941), The Tevis and Colleen Morrow House (1948) (5), La Concha Motel (1961) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On Day # 67 of our Great American Road Trip, we traveled from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington to Estacada in Oregon. We had two ‘Lewis and Clark’ moments: We took a selfie with the Pacific Ocean at our back, just over two months after staying on Cape Cod. We crossed a continent with a Bambi in tow. After that, we still had quite a drive through Washington State - which was becoming a bit boring, frankly, especially through depressing towns like Hoquiam and Aberdeen - but it was a beautiful moment when we saw the five mile wide Columbia River. Drove along the Washington (north) side of it towards the 4.1 mile Astoria-Megler bridge, the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. And what a great crossing it was, even with us having to tow Bambi up the high part of the bridge on the south (Oregon) side. The second moment was when we visited the Lewis & Clark National Historic Park with the replica of Fort Clatsop. Very nicely done! A lady told us about many of the artifacts that were shown, including the peace medals, the flag with 15 stars, musket balls, tools, skins, tobacco. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Canada’s railway companies built grand hotels along the routes of the country’s burgeoning rail network. Many of these hotels were built in French château- and Scottish baronial-inspired styles, rich in dormers, towers and turrets.

When air travel started to compete with the railways in the second half of the twentieth century, many of the hotels struggled. Some were closed and torn down. The ones that survived are now national landmarks.

Let us take you on a tour of the grandest of Canada’s railway hotels.

Windsor Hotel, Montreal

The first of the grand railway hotels, the Windsor, embodied the commercial success of Montreal, then Canada’s largest city.

It took a few years for the hotel to become successful, but by the turn of the century it had become the center of Montreal’s elite social life. A fire in 1906 provided the impetus for an expansion, doubling the number of rooms. During their royal tour of Canada in 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stayed at the Windsor.

Another fire destroyed a third of the hotel in 1957. The damage was so extensive this time that the original building had to be torn down entirely. The Windsor continued to operate out of the North Annex, built in 1906, but the hotel fell into decline. It closed in 1981. The North Annex is now an office building.

Located in the Banff National Park of Alberta, the Banff Springs Hotel has gone through several iterations.

The original hotel, which opened in 1888, was an Alpine structure adorned with stone accents, dormers and turrets. But it had accidentally been built the wrong way around, with its back to the mountain vista. Expansions were made in 1902. Only four years later, plans were drawn up for a complete overhaul. Walter Painter, the architect, designed an eleven-story tower in concrete and stone, flanked by two wings, this time facing in the right direction. For a time, the so-called Painter Tower was the tallest building in the country.

World War I delayed the completion of Painter’s plan. It wasn’t until after a fire in 1926 had destroyed what was left of the original hotel that his two wings were finally completed.

Place Viger, Montreal

Killing two birds with one stone, the Place Viger in Montreal served as both a railway station and a grand hotel. Built in the Châteauesque style, inspired by French Renaissance architecture, it opened its doors in 1898.

The Viger competed with the Windsor Hotel. The first was favored by French-speaking elites, the second catered to Anglophones.

When the city’s commercial center shifted northwest in the beginning of the twentieth century, the hotel lost its appeal. The Depression forced it out of business in 1935. The railway station continued to operate until 1951. The building was then converted into office space. A highway was built next to it in the 1970s, straight through the historical heart of the city, making the whole area undesirable.

In recent years, the Viger and its surroundings have seen a revival. The building is now home to apartments as well as offices.

The Empress hotel in Victoria, British Columbia, was built in the first decade of the twentieth century to accommodate Canadian Pacific’s steamship service, whose main terminal was just one bloc away. When Canadian Pacific ceased its passenger services to the city, the hotel was successfully remarketed as a resort to tourists.

The interwar years were the hotel’s heydays. Edward, Prince of Wales waltzed into dawn in the Crystal Ballroom in 1919. His brother, then-King George VI, and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, attended a luncheon at the Empress in 1939. Shirley Temple, the American actress, stayed there to escape kidnapping threats in California.

Built in tandem with Ottawa���s downtown Union Station between 1909 and 1912, the Château Laurier was built by Canada’s Grand Trunk Railway, which later merged into the Canadian National Railways. The hotel was named after Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier, who supported its construction.

Although it looks French from the outside, the interior of the hotel is more English or Scottish. Until a restoration in the 1980s, the lobby featured dark-oak panelling and a railed gallery overlooking the double-height space and trophies of the hunt.

An east wing was added in 1929, adding 240 rooms to the hotel. An Art Deco-style swimming pool and spa were added the following year.

The hotel was the place to be and be seen in those years. Richard Bedford Bennett, a native of New Brunswick, lived in the Château Laurier during his stint as prime minister from 1930 to 1935. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s English- and French-language radio stations operated out of the hotel’s top floors from 1924 to 2004.
