WHO IS THANOS?

I knew he was a genocidal maniac, and a Rightwing symbol, especially after seeing trolls repeat, and nauseum, for years that "THANOS WAS RIGHT! THANOS WAS RIGHT!"

But even knowing most characters in Marvel are based on old myths, I didn't dwell on it. Until yesterday, when I saw this:

Wolf imagery. The video posted was full of wolves. That's when I decided to look closer. Playing around with the letters in the name, I first stopped on SONTHA, which is both Hindu and the name of one family from Ayrshire, Scotland.

But then, I tried SONATH, and bingo:

The name Somnath is of Indian origin, specifically from Sanskrit. It is derived from the combination of two words: "Soma," meaning moon, and "Nath," meaning lord or protector. Therefore, Somnath can be interpreted as "Lord of the Moon" or "Protector of the Moon."

I spoke with Aeltrileaf about all of this. Well, we had a long discussion. She believed Thanos to be based on Thanatos, the Hindu equivalent of Yama, God of Death:

My personal choice was still Shiva, due to other similarities...the Purple, the Wolves, etc. I did acknowledge that the Hindu and Greek might be related. It's too much of a coincidence that Thanatos is associated with Night and sleep and SOMNATH is too. Aeltrileaf hit on it, saying that Greek is Indo-European, so if you go back far enough, there is overlap. I think at some point, Thanatos got reversed to Somnath, or vice versa.

Anyone who knows him IRL gets to hear him laughing about how stupid his followers are. However it sounds like he kind of buys some of his own New Age BS to a degree that worries people.

He gets in stupid drama and then spends all night digging up something to cancel his opponent over and sic his followers on them, not because he thinks he's justified, but sheerly for the thrill of the hunt. It makes him feel powerful. His twitter has been banned four times. People run webpages dedicated to documenting his heinous bullshit. He reads them regularly.

He's waiting til 2014 when bitcoin prices drop to like $50, buying as much as he can, spending six years waiting, and selling them in 2020 for like $69,000. He runs a blog telling people to buy crypto. He can actually foresee when the prices are going to peak and fall. He doesn't share this info. He makes bank himself and gleefully ruins everyone else's finances with no regrets. (He would encourage Mabel to buy and tell her exactly what day to sell.) (He would not tell Dipper when to sell.)

He hangs out in doomsday prepper forums so that he can make up new conspiracies and see if he can make everyone even more paranoid.

He's got a youtube channel that's a mix of all of the above BS. New Age self-help buy-crypto buy-gold our-universe-isn't-real access-the-higher-planes doomsday conspiracy mishmash. You can imagine the viewers he attracts. He disdains them all and tries to make them worse on purpose. Never shows his face, every video is a slideshow of psychedelic & pseudo-religious art (mostly stolen) with a voiceover and mystical-sounding music.

Mabel gets him on tumblr, because if Mabel has any social media of course it'd be 2013 tumblr, and probably a deviantart. She's posting her art and really badly photoshopped gif edits of her favorite cartoons and musicians, and generally acts like a normal person online.

Bill's tumblr is completely divorced from all his other horrible online activity. All he posts is cryptic rhyming couplets and terrible local photos of things that fascinate him. The photos could be anything from a car with a really sweet flaming paint job to a stunningly beautiful double rainbow over pine-covered mountains to a literal pile of dog shit because he thought it was interesting how it was drying out unevenly. Once he gets investigated for arson because he posted a picture of the house in flames within three hours of the crime. (He was, in fact, guilty, but he wheedled an alibi out of friends before they knew what he was being investigated for.)

He has like eight followers. The only content he reblogs is Eye of Providence images and pyramid images, which he tags #LITERALLY ME and thinks he's hilarious for; and also every single thing Mabel posts without exception until the end of time.

Summary: An actress with a sadistic & abusive ex reaches out to Evangeline to hopefully thwart his efforts in destroying her reputation by means of leaking a depraved sex tape.

All alone in a vast hotel suite, surrounded by most of her belongings, Evangeline paced the living room area, bare feet soundlessly padding away at the plush carpet. She pinched at the bridge of her nose, listening to the woes of an up and coming actress talking away and trying to explain her reasoning behind the existence of a sex tape. A tape that was currently being used as leverage by her former lover, another actor whose TV cop character was more of a household name than his actual name.

She, however, knew his name quite well. His name had been circulating in the forums on a somewhat regular basis. He did this quite often, and a good number of his ex-girlfriends and former flings had reached out through the dark recesses of the internet, risking their well-treasured privacy for even the chance of Evangeline taking on their case.

In truth, she couldn't care less why the tape existed, only that it did. The reasonings of these people didn't interest her in the slightest, and getting mentally or emotionally involved in the individual risked the chance of her forming an opinion and failing to be indifferent to these plights. This was simply business for her. If someone required a certain piece of media to be eradicated, then it would cease to exist in a few choice keystrokes.

"He said that he can ruin me with this," the actress, Angelika something or other, sniffled on the other end of the line. "That he's gonna sell this to any news outlet that would hear him out just so he can get the interviews. And then the interviews will get him new projects. He'll blame it all on me and tell anyone that'll give him the time that I'm the one that wants to be degraded and treated like a piece of dirt on the road. He sh--" She broke out into sobs, unable to even form the words.

"You don't have to say more," Evangeline addressed the actress. "The video will be rendered useless if it so much as lands in anyone's inbox." She didn't mention anything about the actor already being on her radar, or that bugs were already placed throughout his laughably unsecure digital ecosystem.

This man had tormented so many women that it made her neck twitch every time she flipped to a channel and saw his smug face on the TV screen, using the same monotonous delivery and three facial expressions. Chances were if she dug any deeper she'd come to discover that he blackmailed his way to his cushy primetime darling status as well.

Just as she was about to tell Angelika that she didn't need to worry about payment, the actress spoke again. "What about the pictures?"

"He took pictures of you? On top of all the videos?" She didn't recall finding any pictures within the Texan actor's hard drive.

"No, but he took my phone. He's holding it hostage and I have…more in there. Pics that he hasn't seen but I…sent to other people."

She pinched the bridge of her nose again. She's gonna give me a goddamn migraine, she hissed inwardly, already feeling the vein at her forehead pulsing just calculating the amount of additional work now that she had a whole new data source to worry about. "The price is seventy-five thousand."

Evangeline heard the actress scoff from her end. "Didn't think it'd be that cheap, I might just keep you on retainer--"

"Seventy-five thousand BitCoin," she cut her off. "I believe the going exchange rate is fourteen dollars…? I assume the device you're calling me from has a calculator app, they make apps for everything nowadays."

The sound of buttons clicking away (in a very "hunt and peck" type of pattern) came from the other end of the call, followed by a sharp gasp. "A million?! But this jack-off's holding this over my head--"

"The video that he possesses is one thing," she explained. "The scope you just added because of your pictures, which I'm assuming are nude or lewd or God help me both, is a whole other beast entirely. One is a matter of your safety, and as far as I see, the other is simply a matter of your recklessly handled privacy. And the price of the latter is seventy-five thousand, considering the amount of work you're about to put me through."

She huffed, grumbled, cursed the hacker under her breath, even. But ultimately, she relented. "Fine. How do I send you this coin bite?"

Just shy of an hour later, there was a ding that sounded off on Evangeline's machine, notifying her of the arrival of an additional estimated one million dollars distributed among her accounts. She stripped the audio off of the offending video that Angelika had initially reached out to her for, isolating the snippets that contained only the misogynistic actor's voice, spewing some of the most vitriolic hateful phrases she'd heard from the people moving in that industry.

It seemed that with every sexual partner he became more degrading, looking at these women like they were something less than human. She contemplated for a moment what the outcome would be if she executed this man's downfall with a more personal touch and paying the son of a bitch a visit just as he's watching the image that he worked so hard to cultivate crash and burn around him.

"What a bunch of fucking hypocrites," greywolf, one of her associates, spat out from his end of an encrypted call. "Imagine putting forward an image that you value women, that you're their ally in their fight for equal opportunities and equal pay and then--"

"And behind closed doors you're into fucking excrement play?" she finished for him, trying to fight back the way her stomach retched even letting the words linger in the air. "He's getting worse. More dangerous. I think this should be enough to put into a compilation and leak to the media. Let it fly. May the shit hit the fan and land on him for once."

greywolf chuckled, the sound garbled by the voice distortion software he used to mask his identity. "You a wild one for that line, G."

"G?" she questioned him.

"Some of the guys in the scene started calling you a new nickname. Kinda like they promoted you."

Evangeline grimaced, her pacing stopped as she braced herself for what name could possibly come out of the hacker's mouth. "Considering that they're the ones that chose my current moniker 'darkangel', I have no idea how it could get worse, but lemme have it."

He spoke the name, and she audibly cringed, pinching her nose again and sinking into the couch. "What, too much?"

"Way too much. I pray to God that shit doesn't stick."

An alert sounded off on both their ends. The message came from someone sending in a request on a help line that they'd scattered throughout the most accessible layer of the deep web, right at the gates of the dark web.

Please, if anyone's out there reading this, I need help. My crazy possessive ex keeps following me around campus and says that the second he sees me alone he's not gonna hesitate to attack me. It didn't take her long to arrive on campus, easily disguising herself as one of the students with worn jeans and scuffed sneakers. Security was a joke, easily warded off with a casual stroll and a "good evening" thrown their way.

Tracking the GPS location of the student's device led her to the back alley near the campus' main library. There were two average-built male students who screamed 'lookouts' and clear sounds of a struggle happening deeper down the dark pathway.

Evangeline gripped the handle of her talon baton in one hand, a taser in the other. Both lookouts went down to the ground with a lame thud after the quickest shock from the taser traveled through their bodies.

"What the--Troy?! Chad?!" a male voice yelled from inside the alleyway. "Whoever's out there, you don't know who you're dealing with!"

"Help! He's got a knife!" the girl screamed. "Please I'm in here!"

"You stupid slut, did you try calling the fucking cops on me again?" he scoffed. "My dad's giving them thousands of good reasons to look the other way."

The sickening sound of fabric being split by a blade hit her ears and she lunged for the attacker, bringing him down to the ground and letting the girl stumble her way out of the dark alley. "Go!" Evangeline told her, keeping her knee squarely on the man's chest.

"Whatever that slut offered you I can triple it. My dad's--"

"I know exactly who your father is," she seethed, fighting the urge to roll her eyes at how easily she'd managed to grab one of his arms and start twisting the wrong way. "That nice little confession from your smug bitch ass is gonna help me put him away."

"Aaaaaah! Please! Please stop it hurts!" he whined. "We have money, we can pay you--"

"I have more," she stated simply. "I don't want anything from the likes of you." She twisted some more until she heard the joint pop out of place and his terrified screams filled the alley way. Just as she suspected, there was a handkerchief and a small bottle of what she could only assume was chloroform in his pocket. She stuffed the former into his mouth to muffle the sounds. "What's that you and your frat bros tell those poor girls whose lives you've ruined? Oh yeah…Stop screaming. No one's coming to save you."

He only managed to let out a short muffled scream of protest before Evangeline took his head with both hands and twisted, the would-be attacker now falling limp to the ground.

"What a mess," she grumbled as she stood back up to her feet. She meticulously set the scene, making it seem like he simply slipped and fell at a tragically wrong angle while he was trying to dive into the dumpster to retrieve his trusty bottle of chloroform. And then when she was satisfied, she climbed up to the roof of the library building to find another exit.

Just in case either of his frat bros, or even his near victim was still nearby and waiting for someone to walk out of the alleyway.

Evangeline took a moment to catch her breath on the rooftop, sending over the deceased boy's arrogant disclosure of his father Mayor Dickens' corruption over to greywolf. An audio confession of police bribery…maybe someone could make something out of that and the slimy politician would finally see the inside of a prison cell.

Find someone high up on the food chain that isn't on Dickens' payroll and send them this.

So it's taken care of then? Girl's safe?

Dimon: 'We Should Be Stockpiling Bullets'

“We should stockpiling guns, bullets, tanks, planes, drones, you know, rare earths. We know we need to do it. It’s not a mystery,” Dimon said, referencing President Donald Trump's executive order in March that established a Bitcoin reserve.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon argued at the inaugural Reagan National Economic Forum in California that the U.S. should should stockpile guns, ammunition and drones rather than Bitcoin.

“We should stockpiling guns, bullets, tanks, planes, drones, you know, rare earths. We know we need to do it. It’s not a mystery,” Dimon said, referencing President Donald Trump's executive order in March that established a Bitcoin reserve.

Dimon is by now well known for his dislike/disapproval of cryptocurrencies (even though his own bank now allows clients to trade them); which should come as no surprise since the concept of sovereignty and democratizing finance is the nemesis of the established 'trust us with your cash' regime of banking rent-seekers.

“We should be stockpiling bullets,” he continued.

“Like, you know, the military guys tell you that, you know, if there’s a war in the South China Sea, we have missiles for seven days. Okay, come on. I mean, we can’t say that with a straight face and think that’s okay.

Dimon underscored during his address that he does not view China as America's top adversary, and instead pointed his attention to the "enemy within" that could lead to the U.S. losing its status as the world's leader. 

"I'm not as worried about China," Dimon said.  "China is a potential adversary. They're doing a lot of things well, they have a lot of problems. But what I really worry about is us. Can we get our own act together, our own values, our own capability, our own management?"

Dimon warned that a crack in the bond market is “going to happen�� after the US government and Fed “massively overdid” spending and quantitative easing.

“I just don’t know if it’s going to be a crisis in six months or six years, and I’m hoping that we change both the trajectory of the debt and the ability of market makers to make markets,” the JPM CEO said Friday at the Reagan National Economic Forum.  “Unfortunately, it may be that we need that to wake us up.”

Dimon also criticized the Democrats boarder policies:

“Immigration… what the hell were we doing? The bottom 20% of our population’s wages haven’t gone up in 20 years. The Biden admin was wasting so much money on “green” stuff that we know won’t work...meanwhile our schools don’t work.”

I want to know what the politics in latin america are like currently, how are the elections there different and/or similar to the USA in guatemala, are you aware of whats going on in neighboring countries atm?

I am vaguely aware of Mexico and El Salvador but not too too much. Mexico's current government is a continuity government from a party that has been governing most of the 21st century. El Salvador is particularly notable for its strongman populist president who I'm told has been good for the violence problem but has also done more questionable stuff like making Bitcoin legal tender. (That was quite the novelty for me when I visited two years ago! All the signs saying "We accept Bitcoin here")

In Guatemala our election was just last year! We vote on 5 ballots:

President

Mayor

Regional District Congressmen

National List Congressmen

Representatives for PARLACEN (the Central American Parliament)

Presidentials are done with a run-off system. To win you need a simple majority of votes (50% + 1 vote), but you pretty much never get that on the first round of voting so the two top candidates go on to a second round about 2 months later.

Congress is decided on a party list proportional system. The country is divided into 23 electoral districts, representing the 22 departments + Guatemala City, and each is assigned a certain amount of congressmen based on population. These are distributed proportional to how many votes they got and then the parties assign the congressmen based on a list of all their potential candidates. There is additionally an electoral district that is voted on separately and which counts the whole country. This national list elects 32 congressmen, which at 160 congressmen total makes the national list 20% of the elected congressmen.

Mayor is pretty self explanatory.

And the most contentious is representatives to the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN). PARLACEN is supposed to be a forum for our countries to discuss diplomacy and formulate policies for international trade and cooperation. In practice they don't really, like, do anything. PARLACEN has a reputation for being a den of corrupt politicians who are only running because they want diplomatic immunity for 4 more years. Presidents of member countries (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Dominican Republic) get a seat automatically after leaving office and that has always been super controversial.

In Guatemala this became particularly egregious in 2020 when outgoing President Jimmy Morales rushed his swearing in to office in order to shield himself from a lawsuit due to his mismanagement in office. Protestors were trying to prevent him from rushing into the PARLACEN building in Guatemala City so they could file the charges at the first hour of the morning. But he did end up managing to get sworn in and get legal immunity at the last minute.

For this reason a lot of the left here in Guatemala refuses to field candidates for PARLACEN and a pretty big portion of the population just intentionally spoils that ballot specifically.

Our current president is presiding over a 12+ party fractured government with a congressional minority. His party, Movimiento Semilla, is a center-left party who is focused on dismantling the corrupt structures of power more established politicians have already built. Their party has its beginnings in a protest movement that mobilized due to a corruption case in 2015 to demand the president and vice president to immediately resign. It has been an uphill battle and from his election the government tried every dirty trick they could to prevent him from taking power.

It's not been even a year since they have been in power, but I am optimistic about Movimiento Semilla so far. My biggest hope is that since they were electoral allies of the parties I support, the leftist indigenous rights coalition of Winaq and URNG Maíz, their growing support may spill over to them. I truly do think they are some of the very few principled people still in politics here.
