Il y a de nombreuses années, le jeune Jean-Christophe a rencontré et s'est lié d'amitié avec un groupe d'animaux anthropomorphes — Maître Hibou, Coco Lapin, Bourriquet, Porcinet et Winnie l'ourson — dans la Forêt des rêves bleus, et il leur apportait de la nourriture. Mais lorsque Jean-Christophe est allé à l'université pour devenir médecin, il a cessé de leur rendre visite. Sans Jean-Christophe pour les nourrir ou les guider, et avec l'arrivée de l'hiver, les animaux ont connu une famine extrême et ont été forcés de tuer et de manger Bourriquet, ce qui les a tellement traumatisés qu'ils ont développé une haine viscérale pour les humains, en particulier envers Jean-Christophe pour les avoir laissés souffrir. Ils ont juré de renoncer à leur humanité, de sombrer dans la folie sauvage, de tuer tous les humains sur terre et de ne plus jamais parler.
