BBC press release:
BBC News Burmese launches on direct-to-home video channel in the aftermath of Myanmar earthquake
24 April 2025
To ensure audiences can access crucial information in the aftermath of the Myanmar earthquake, the BBC World Service has added a direct-to-home satellite video channel to the platforms delivering BBC News Burmese content.
In the coming four months, the Thaicom 6 satellite, which covers Myanmar, Thailand, and the wider region, will deliver BBC News Burmese TV and audio programming. The channel will also provide access, via a QR code, to the service's website, bbc.com/burmese. …
In the aftermath of the disaster that struck Myanmar on 28 March 2025, millions in the country, as well as Burmese-speakers in Thailand, came to the service's platforms for accurate updates and analysis. BBC News Burmese journalists were deployed to the earthquake epicentre and were reporting from Mandalay, Yangon, and Bangkok, as well as from London. BBC News Burmese extended its daily live radio bulletin from 15min to 30min to include additional reporting and lifeline information. Audiences can also watch the Monday to Friday 15-minute TV bulletin which goes on air at 20.45 local time.
BBC News Burmese channel on Thaicom 6 satellite will run all this programming, with evening repeats of radio and TV bulletins from May 2025. The channel will also visualise the QR code for the website bbc.com/burmese, so the viewers can access the latest news and information online.
Over the next few months, the direct-to-home satellite video channel – formerly used by VOA – will add to BBC News Burmese availability via the service's website as well as its YouTube channel and its Facebook page which has a following of 25m people. BBC News Burmese also connects with audiences via Instagram, Telegram and X. Digital free-to-air TV channel, Mizzima TV, rebroadcasts BBC News Burmese TV programmes.
BBC News Burmese is part of the BBC World Service.

From Phys.org:
New atomic fountain clock joins elite group that keeps the world on time
by Rich Press National Institute of Standards and Technology April 28, 2025
Clocks on Earth are ticking a bit more regularly thanks to NIST-F4, a new atomic clock at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) campus in Boulder, Colorado.
This month, NIST researchers published an article in Metrologia establishing NIST-F4 as one of the world's most accurate timekeepers. NIST has also submitted the clock for acceptance as a primary frequency standard by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the body that oversees the world's time.
NIST-F4 measures an unchanging frequency in the heart of cesium atoms, the internationally agreed-upon basis for defining the second since 1967. The clock is based on a "fountain" design that represents the gold standard of accuracy in timekeeping. NIST-F4 ticks at such a steady rate that if it had started running 100 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed, it would be off by less than a second today.
By joining a small group of similarly elite timepieces run by just 10 countries around the world, NIST-F4 makes the foundation of global time more stable and secure. At the same time, it is helping to steer the clocks NIST uses to keep official U.S. time. Distributed via radio and the internet, official U.S. time is critical for telecommunications and transportation systems, financial trading platforms, data center operations and more.
NIST-F4 has improved time signals that are "used literally billions of times each day for everything from setting clocks and watches to ensuring the accurate time stamping of hundreds of billions of dollars of electronic financial transactions," said Liz Donley, chief of the Time and Frequency Division at NIST.
A special kind of clock
Cesium fountain clocks such as NIST-F4 are a type of atomic clock—a complex, high-precision device that extracts timing pulses from atoms. These clocks play a critical role in our globally connected society: They serve as "primary frequency standards" that work together to calibrate Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC (an agreed-upon system for keeping time using data from atomic clocks around the world, known as a time scale).
National measurement labs such as NIST produce and distribute versions of UTC using their own time scales; NIST's version, for example, is known as UTC(NIST). Those national time scales are then used to synchronize the clocks and networks we rely on in our daily lives.
In fountain clocks, a cloud of thousands of cesium atoms is first cooled to near absolute zero using lasers. Then, a pair of laser beams toss the atoms gently upward, after which they fall under their own weight.
During their journey, the atoms pass twice through a small chamber full of microwave radiation. The first time, as the atoms are on their way up, the microwaves put the atoms into a quantum state that cycles in time at a special frequency known as the cesium resonant frequency—an unchanging constant set by the laws of nature.
About one second later, as the atoms fall back down, a second interaction between the microwaves and the atoms reveals how close the clock's microwave frequency is to the atoms' natural resonant frequency. This measurement is used to tune the microwave frequency toward the atomic resonance frequency.
A detector then counts 9,192,631,770 wave cycles of the fine-tuned microwaves. The time it takes to count those cycles defines the official international second.
(That may change as early as 2030, when nations plan to consider redefining the second in terms of one or more different atomic elements used in so-called optical clocks that can measure time even more precisely than fountain clocks can. Even after that, cesium fountain clocks will still play an important, though diminished, role in timekeeping.)

You Can Block Those Annoying Cookie Banners on Every Website
They might be legally required, but they're also blocking everything you want to read.
By Pranay Parab
There’s a long list of things that make browsing the internet feel like living in a dystopian hellscape, and annoying cookie banners and consent forms are right at the top of that list. Most websites are legally required to display these notices and take your consent for using cookies. However, it also blocks a big chunk of the website you’re trying to read. Let’s fix this on all of your devices.
Block cookie banners on desktop
No matter what platform you’re using, you can easily install a browser extension to block cookie notices. Super Agent is a free extension that works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It’s built to automatically get rid of cookie banners and will come through for almost all the websites you visit. The extension’s preferences page allows you to customize which cookies you want to accept and which ones you want to reject. This is a key feature: You don’t want to use an add-on that automatically accepts all cookies on every websites you go to.
If you’d rather not install a dedicated extension for this purpose, you can use uBlock Origin as an alternative. It blocks a long list of annoyances by default, but you have to manually enable its cookie-notice blocking list. Click the uBlock Origin icon and go to Settings > Filter lists > Annoyances. Enable EasyList Cookie to hide cookie banners.
Be aware that automatically blocking cookie notices could prevent some websites from loading altogether, which is why you can consider using uBlock Origin’s element hiding feature instead. When you see a cookie notice on any website, you can click the uBlock Origin extension icon from the browser’s toolbar, and select the eyedropper icon.
This enters the element-picker mode: Hover the mouse cursor over the cookie notice till the entire banner is selected, click it once, and select Create Filter in the pop-up window. You may have to do this manually on multiple websites, but it’s a one-time effort for each website you visit and only takes a few clicks.
Block cookie banners on iPhone and iPad
As long as your iPhone and iPad are updated to iOS 15, you can use some great Safari extensions to block annoyances on the web. However, Super Agent is still the best cookie-notice handler for iPhone and iPad. It lets the cookie banner load and automatically accepts or rejects cookies based on your preferences. This takes a second or so after the website loads, but you don’t have to do anything after enabling the extension.
Block cookie banners on Android
If you use Firefox on Android, you can install the browser add-on for uBlock Origin to block cookie notices on all websites. If you don’t, your best bet is to use an ad-blocker like AdGuard for Android, which also blocks cookie banners on various websites. The unfortunate truth is that these types of apps are not allowed on Google Play, so you may have to sideload it on your phone.

—just like now, tonight.
Some post-concert reflections.
Even in the wake of a few days' worth of post-concert processing, the whole experience and the serendipity of it remains surreal.
What if I had gone ahead and made plans? What if I booked myself that pity staycation I'd initially planned? What if I'd actually caved and then paid for a ticket? What if I hadn't continued talking to my friend after we'd left? What if I hadn't posted about Ateez on main and had her ask me, "You're an Atiny?! Since when?!" An entire realm of what-if's and somehow, none of those happened.
I feel like I've been walking in a dream since then.
Did it really happen? Did I really watch them live, addressing us in English, Korean, and Malay? Did I really hear them sing anthem of my 2021, the song that spoke to me during one of the hardest times?
A free poster, an event card, a new friend made, one bottle of wine, 5 types of too-salty cured meats, 2 free shots, and ten thousand videos (including one of me struggling to hold my tears back during Turbulence) later, I'm still struggling to reconcile what occurred with my current reality.
When I'd refrained from purchase, I told myself, It's okay. I'll see them another time — even if it's not this one, something better will come.
Call it celestial luck, call it good timing, call it privilege, somehow, some way, this became my reality.
Somehow, on a Friday, I ended up scrambling to sort out ticket details and contact additions, I ended up with a ticket QR code, I ended up hurriedly stitching my top's back-tie pieces to the sleeves to stop it from falling off so easily, then hastily painting my nails, excitement climbing steadily in the pit of my stomach as it slowly became clearer that I was going, I was going to see Ateez, in my country!
Saturday arrived, and I was all over the place. I got ready way too early, had way too much coffee, and got too overstimulated to actually retrieve any freebies promised on the Telegram chat. (Not to mention, after the concert, I also got lost trying to find my way down to the lobby and ended up in the car park.)
But it didn't matter. None of it mattered (even if I'm still upset about my mints getting confiscated).
Because when the lights dimmed, after my new friend asked, "Are you excited?!" and I had all of 10 seconds to screech, "Yes!" before eight silhouettes appeared in the flesh, in front of me (in a seat that was way, way more in the front than we were supposed to be), and the familiar notes of a discography I'd memorised front to back to front all over again rang through the air, the rush that came with it was indescribable.
It probably sounds like deception now, but I'd honestly never been a concert girly. I never particularly saw the need, since I was so accustomed to sourcing things — even seemingly-elusive ones — on the internet anyway (if you catch my drift). The only artists I'd ever come close to contemplating watching were MJ and Il Divo, for which the timings were never really right. (Plus, MJ also passed before he went on the This Is It world tour, which was the one we'd been eyeing.)
I was not crazy entranced by other artists, either. I liked songs here and there, sure, but whenever I searched up their contextual discography I'd usually discover that one track I liked by them was precisely that: a one-off, with no replicas in their albums.
Eventually, I just decided to stop searching by artists. I just listened to whatever fit my mood. Whatever I was interested in at the moment. I tried my damnednest to fit into the Artsy Student™ vibe but had to concede because it just very much was not my vibe after all.
Then we landed on kpop.
It was not unfamiliar to me at all. I'd been around for the success of the 2nd-gen wave and, in fact, my introduction to it was through proofreading my friend's fanfiction (yeah, I know). But it's the first time I started being actively involved in it — and then, Mamamoo announced their tour, and KL was a stop.
And that is how I ended up going for my first concert.
I feel, maybe, it's different for everyone: that moment.
A grain, a nudge, a little ripple in a whole sea of the loud and vivid and confetti-dripped cacophony that envelopes you — except it's completely silent. Your mind shuts off the external, the ambience dies down, it's just you being completely, utterly, truly present, throwing yourself into the coinciding expectation and reality.
For me, it's when the artist(s) first come out onstage. That's my moment. There's noise everywhere around me, but for an infinitesimal wink of time, I don't hear any of it. All of my attention is attuned to the performers onstage, here, now, in this very same space as I am. And it's surreal.
That's how I felt when I saw the four figures of Mamamoo appear: chills, near tears, hit with the startling realisation: Oh, this is why. This is why people go for concerts.
That's still how I felt, almost precisely 3 days ago (to the hour), when 8 shadows strode onto the stage.
And all that goes through my brain: They're here. They're really here. They're right here in front of me.
And then magic happens. There's aching vocal chords, big grins and big laughs, your feet will start its slow descent into numbness (if you're standing), fanchants ringing out in solidarity, and by the third Ateez song when you're sure you've lost your voice you somehow find more of it to go on and cheer anyway. They dance every bit as good as you watch them do on screen — better. They're electrifying, they're magnetic. You can't pull your eyes away from them for a second. You sing-scream along to songs and mess up all your recordings with your voice.
And then, magic happened.
"We haven't performed this song in a while," they said, and I hazarded guesses: Answer? Inception? Pirate King?
Nope — the first few notes of Turbulence starts playing instead, and I froze.
Suddenly I'm back in 2021 hearing that it's okay to be here, all over again and again and again. And suddenly it's a new moment: the one where your song plays. One which helped tide you over in the loneliest moments in your life, helped hem the parts of yourself you were trying to hold onto loosely together. And it turns an ordinary 3-minute track into feeling simultaneously like forever and a split second.
[I did, however, recover by the last chorus enough to actually film the last chorus, and almost had to laugh at the incredulity of them hopping right into Work right after.]
They wrapped up swiftly afterwards, ending on a very upbeat Bouncy. But the feelings stayed with me after, simmering, culminating in this what I can only describe as Bible-length post. Because I wish I could go back to my old self who denounced concerts and tell her, No, you just don't get it yet — but you will. You'll feel like, for that moment, you belong somewhere — this is exactly, precisely, where you need to be. And it'll be one of the most healing things in the entire world.
I'm still emotional writing this, and I might just end up deleting the post altogether, but I just needed to selfishly announce to the world: I felt this way. I feel this way. I found this one group, these friends, these people in my life who care about me and my interests. And I'm so fucking grateful.

Top 10 Best Ways to Advertise Your Rental Property in 2025
In 2025, finding tenants isn’t just about “To-Let” boards. It’s about smart online presence, local reach, and clarity. Whether you're renting out a flat, independent house, or PG unit, the following methods will help you reach genuine tenants faster—with real tips and examples that work.
Tumblr media
1. List on Popular Rental Websites
🏠 Focus Websites: OLX Homes, MaadiVeedu.com, MagicBricks, 99acres, NoBroker
Why it works: These sites attract lakhs of property seekers daily.
Example: Karthik listed his 1BHK flat in Anna Nagar on MaadiVeedu.com. Within 4 days, he got 8 calls and finalized a tenant.
Tips:
Upload minimum 5 photos (bedroom, kitchen, hall, entrance, bathroom).
Mention exact rent, deposit, furnishing, floor, and location.
Use simple titles: "2BHK for Rent in Tambaram – Gated Community"
2. Share in WhatsApp and Telegram Groups
📲 Reach people in seconds through location-specific groups.
Why it works: Local groups are filled with active renters.
Example: In Hyderabad, a PG owner shared in “Kukatpally PG & Rentals 2025” Telegram group and got 3 walk-in visits the next day.
Tips:
Keep message short: "2BHK for Rent – Velachery, ₹15,000 – Family only – 9500XXXXXX"
Add 2–3 clear images.
Ask friends to forward in their groups too.
3. Post on Facebook Marketplace & Local Rental Groups
📢 Free tool with great visibility
Why it works: Renters search daily on Facebook using keywords.
Example: An IT employee listed his flat on "Chennai Rental Homes" Facebook group. He added a short video tour and received 12 enquiries in 2 days.
Tips:
Post in local groups like “Coimbatore House for Rent.”
Always reply to comments and messages quickly.
Use emotional language: “Peaceful 2BHK for Family – Park Nearby – No Brokerage!”
4. Use Google My Business (for multiple units or brokers)
🌍 For owners with more than 1 property or brokers
Why it works: Helps renters find you through Google search and maps.
Tips:
Add photos, working hours, contact, and reviews.
Use keywords in your profile like: “Affordable Flats in Coimbatore” “PG near Ramapuram College”
5. Create YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels
🎥 Visual content gets more trust in 2025.
Why it works: Short videos show what photos can't—natural lighting, layout, and real feel.
Example: A broker in Bengaluru made 30-second videos for 3 rentals and posted them on Instagram with tags like #AffordableHomesBLR and got DMs from tenants.
Tips:
Keep video under 60 seconds.
Highlight entrance, living area, balcony, and bathroom.
Add voiceover or text like: "2BHK near SRM College – ₹13,000/month – Family Only"
6. List with Video Tours on Property Portals
🎬 Video helps renters shortlist faster
Why it works: In 2025, renters avoid properties without video.
Tips:
Record during daytime to show sunlight and ventilation.
Narrate basic info: "East-facing, 2 bathrooms, bike parking, 24/7 water".
Platforms like MaadiVeedu.com allow video uploads directly.
7. Use Digital Posters in Local Shops & Groups
🖼️ Smart version of old-school methods
Why it works: Local shops still get daily footfall from people nearby.
Example: Ravi, a house owner in Trichy, printed 10 posters with a QR code and gave them to tea shops, kirana stores, and medicals nearby. He received calls within 3 days.
Tips:
Create a simple poster with:
Photo of the house
Rent, contact number
QR code linking to Google Maps or property listing
8. Partner with Local Brokers
🤝 Brokers are still fast and result-oriented
Why it works: Many renters still trust brokers for safety and speed.
Tips:
Don’t rely on just one broker.
Clearly mention terms: family/bachelors, rent, advance, pet policy.
Ask brokers to take video calls with potential tenants.
9. Share Google Maps Location
📍 Makes it easy for renters to find your property
Why it works: Renters prefer exact locations over vague area names.
Tips:
Open Google Maps > Long press your location > Click ‘Share’ > Send the link.
Add location link in:
WhatsApp forwards
Facebook posts
Listing description
Example: “1RK for Rent – Near Sathyam Theatre – ₹8,000. Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xyz123"
10. Use Local Language in Ads
🗣️ Makes ads more relatable to local audience
Why it works: Regional language connects better in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
Tips:
Use simple words in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, etc.
Avoid difficult or fancy English.
Example (Tamil):
"Mudichur-la irukkira 1BHK veedu – thani toilet, bore water, gas stove irukku – rent ₹7,500 – call pannunga 9876XXXXXX"
Final Thoughts
Whether you're renting a PG in Salem, a villa in Coimbatore, or a flat in Chennai, advertising smartly is the key to getting the right tenant faster. Use a mix of digital tools and local reach—and always add photos, video, exact details, and location.

What is the best link shortener?
What is a URL shortener and which are the best?
A good snip never hurts.
Although the internet generates more and more weight due to the strict amount of accumulated data, passing by the 10 zettabytes, according to the
World Wide Web Size, it is clear that today's immediacy is rewarded, the concise idea, getting to the point with the message and the Outcome.
In other words, the URL you share is as short as possible, with a clear font and without an eternal chain of meaningless symbols.
Because, in effect, those long URLs in the form of kilometer chains have a way of condensing, using a shortener.
And they make something a little coarse elegant - in fact, they are even used in print magazines or in a bibliography without violating APA standards.
Let's see what this magic encryption is all about.
WHAT IS A URL Shortener?
A URL shortener is, plain and simple, a tool that abbreviates the link of any content.
In this way, an address such as https://t2mio.com/blog/what-does-it-mean-to-shorten-url/ becomes encrypted to something like https://t2m.io/3qOuC5y5 .
WHAT IS A URL SHORTENER FOR?
When Twitter enforced the use of 140 characters, shortening any letter was pressing.
A simple letter of more annoyed the message to us.
Years after claiming some extra space, Twitter started to include its own shortener, then doubled the space for messages, and finally stopped counting the characters that imply links or embedded content, which is more dynamic and interactive.
Facebook, Tumblr or any other platform are governed by these same rules.
But even a URL shortener is still a great tool.
Beyond practicality, here are some arguments in favor:
Analytical: the shorteners collect information on the number of openings, data from the browser, OS and device, associated demographic information, PV, etc. In other words, they are tools that serve to keep more precise control of interactions with content. Hootsuite or Buffer, for example, allows us to obtain data in real-time, even when we send these URLs modified by Telegram or WhatsApp. If you are a community manager or have ever worked with email marketing, you will already know what we are talking about.
Personalization and homogenization: if our URL involves a very long stream of numbers and letters because it is accompanied by a UTM code (Urchin Traffic Monitor), which, in addition, adds publication date, there is nothing soberer than seeing a short URL with just five or six letters. In addition, there are many options for shorteners, so we can get a custom URL - ideal for affiliate promotions or marketing campaigns. Nothing better than using keywords ( keywords ) or calls to action (CTA) that most interested us to achieve a result appealing.
NOT ALL ARE ADVANTAGES
Although it should also be noted that shortening a URL can be interpreted as a symptom of lack of transparency.
In the middle of 2019, where almost any content can be embedded, we should not worry, but we must still consider it for full transparency.
The last thing we want when sharing something is to be branded as a spammer, having sent content without informing what it is. But t2m URL shortener stops spamming and it takes a little basic fee on signup.
If we use a depersonalized URL, we also lose some relevance. And we also expose ourselves to the fact that this external tool stops working, so that we will lose the connection with the entire base of links.
THEN WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?
Easy, the one that uses these basic premises: simple application, null expiration —that has a payment option to keep the new URLs—, which is as short as possible, with the minimum number of characters, and is a service reliable, considering how it redirects.
THE BEST LINK SHORTENERS
For this reason, when it comes to reducing our URLs, we must bet on the most reliable shorteners.
And yes, there is life beyond Google Shortener. Although we must recognize that Google is one of the fastest and has different extensions in both Chrome and Firefox.
But it should be noted that this shortener became obsolete on April 13, 2018, and was replaced by Firebase Dynamic Links.
The use in almost all of them will be the same: paste the original URL in a blank drawer and, on the other side, the shortened URL will appear as a result.
From here, we can already share the new URL on social networks.
And measure your engagement, of course.
T2M URL Shortener
T2M URL Shortener has been one of the most popular in this work and is used for its variety of options offered, including statistics and the ability to create QR codes. You can download CSV files for you shorted links list and get branded URL shortening service.
TINY URL
Another very popular example that won't surprise almost anyone. It was one of the pioneers in the link marketing market and, under its basic appearance, it provides a good handful of statistical data to contribute to our reports.
In addition, we must take into account its main promise: these URLs do not expire, hence they are one of the predilections for email marketing.
OW.LY
Not all free tools are going to be poor in their choice offering. That of Owly is a very simple and practical shortener, it is fully integrated into Hootsuite -for alone did not provide virtually any additional information for the analysis of data- and facilitates programming of publications.
Although perhaps one of its best functions is to allow shortening links without registering. It is up to us to choose its free version or the complete suite.

What To Prepare to China?
China, the most populous country in the world at 1.436 billion people (approximately 44 times of Malaysia’s population of 32.15 million people) and also the third or fourth largest country in the world (approximately 29 times the size of Malaysia). We have definitely heard a thing or two about China, with most notable “Made in China” in majority of your items. Production cost is one of the lowest in the world, hence why it is known as the world’s factory.
You might be planning to go to China, and so happened to stumble upon this blog as you are finding for some information on what to prepare before heading there. Otherwise, you could be my friend who read this because you saw me posting, or you just happened to see this for whatever reason. Not to worry. For my first ever travel blog, I will be sharing based on my experience on what you should prepare before heading to China and some things to keep in mind. I will be writing this from a Malaysian’s perspective (I’m a proud Malaysian), but I will try my utmost best to be as international-friendly as possible. Ya know… need to reach out to more readers! Anyways, hope you enjoy!
1) Let’s talk Visa.
No, I’m not talking about the credit card Visa. I’m talking about your permission to travel into the country visa. As of 26 December 2019, all Malaysians are required to apply for a visa before entering into the People’s Republic of China. You may use Passport Index to check if your passport requires a visa before entering to China. The link is right here!
https://www.passportindex.org/
However, the process of applying a visa is incredibly simple. All you need to do is to go to this website. shown below!
https://www.visaforchina.org/web/guidance/StepByStep_questions.action?visacenterCode=KUL&request_locale=en_US&site_alias=KUL_EN
Just follow the process. It’s a very quick process and shouldn’t take more than a week. However, it’s always good to apply at least one month before your trip.
2) Cashless Society Is Real
You might or might not heard about it, but China is currently in a transition to a cashless society. By “transition” I meant like it’s probably 95% complete. You can literally pay anything and everything with the two e-wallets in China, which is WeChat Pay and Alipay. Even small shops, roadside vendors, and markets have their own QR codes which you can scan and pay. There is a higher chance that you are not able to pay with cash than e-wallet.
WeChat Pay
As of 23 December 2019, a foreigner is still unable to use WeChat Pay in China as WeChat Pay in Mainland China requires you to have a local phone number and a Chinese bank account to be able to use. Well, no cashless society for foreigners then.
BUT WAIT.
Alipay
Alipay has just very recently launched a Tour Pass which enables foreigners to join in the cool Chinese gang and pay with your mobile phone. Just download the Alipay app, register yourself as an international user, follow the steps to register and you will be able to use Alipay e-wallet in China for 90 days. How it works is that you will receive a virtual prepaid card issued by the Bank of Shanghai. Don’t worry at all, any remaining balance in the wallet will be refunded back to your registered card once the 90 days has ended. Alexander Wong from Soya Cincau wrote a simple article on this. Tap this link below to read more about it.
https://www.soyacincau.com/2019/11/06/alipay-ewallet-tour-pass-for-tourists/
In a nutshell, as foreigners, just set up Alipay and you will be able to pay with your phone everywhere.
Malaysians, if you have not gotten BigPay, you are missing out big times. BigPay is basically a credit/debit card based on a Mastercard prepaid introduced by AirAsia. You can use it to make payments at over 30 million Mastercard merchants worldwide as it functions like a normal credit/debit card that is managed by the BigPay app. Just install the app, sign up, top up some cash into it and you are ready to use the card. While there are countless of benefits on using BigPay, I will highlight two big reasons to get this card.
i) BigPay offers the best exchange rate when you purchase an item with BigPay card when you travel overseas. In other words, by using BigPay and purchase items using the BigPay card in another country, BigPay offers the best rate and pays to the merchant at the current exchange rate. To elaborate further, the money that you change at your local money changer will have a higher rate due to many hidden fees, but BigPay does not have any hidden fees.
ii) If you are a frequent AirAsia flyer, use BigPay and enjoy zero processing fee while buying any flight tickets from AirAsia. Not only that, spend with BigPay and you can collect BIG points which can be used to redeem flight tickets.
**I am not promoting BigPay but it’ll be good if they can pay me for writing about them. It’s a real life saver for travels.
***But if you are going to get BigPay, why not use my referral code to sign up? You get RM10, I get RM10. It’s a win-win. My referral code is ZW1PKS7ATN.
So what is the bottom line from this long segment? I’ve topped up the Alipay app using the BigPay card, which I get the best rates while able to use Alipay to make purchase in China conveniently.
3) The Great Firewall of China
Took a nice photo and wanted to post it on Instagram? How about posting a status about how you are having a good time so far on Facebook? Want to make a video call with your friend using WhatsApp? Sorry, you can’t do it in China.
Yes, if you still do not know about this, China bans many, many websites that we access on a daily basis. Some top notable sites are:
Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit
Messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Line
Anything from Google, including your Gmail, YouTube, and even Google Play Store
For a more complete list, I have attached a website here which you can take a look.
https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/the-complete-list-of-blocked-websites-in-china-how-to-access-them/
Unless you are fine with WeChat, which is the only messaging app I can think of that is able to use in China, you will need a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to bypass the firewall.
My own experience to get by this problem is by getting a portable WiFi from Klook to bring over to China. Be sure to read the reviews stating that it can access the firewall. I got it from this website below!
https://www.klook.com/en-MY/activity/18737-3g-4g-wifi-mainland-china/?krt=s20&krid=3c37b711-5b56-4331-6e62-5a33130b4b6a
I also downloaded at least 3 to 4 of free VPNs from Google Play Store before heading to China with hopes that some of them work. China has been actively cracking down these VPNs, so not all VPN works. If you are able to afford a proper VPN, you can subscribe to a legitimate VPN service which will be much better. I have not subscribed to a VPN service before this trip, but now I have.
I personally subscribed to Nord VPN about a week ago and it is working charms so far. I managed to get a great deal of only paying RM230 for a 3-year subscription! PM me to know how or wait a while as I will post a new blog on how I got such a good deal!
Be sure to download and prepare the VPNs before heading to China as you won’t be able to access to the Google Play Store once you are using China’s internet.
So with so many apps unable to be used, what do you use? That brings me to my next point.
4) Baidu Maps, WeChat, and Didi as your replacement
If you are able to read Chinese, then Baidu Maps is your alternative to Google Maps. It is basically China version Google Maps. Baidu is basically China’s Google.
Baidu Maps helped me to determine if it was worth walking, taking the public transport or driving to a destination. For public transport, it showed me the exact route to take, the exact bus number or train line to take, and even the total fare of the trip. As there is no access to Google in China, it is quite unreliable to use Google Maps in China even with VPN access as it does not tell you as much as Baidu Maps does. However, do take note again that it is only in Chinese, so for my fellow friends who can’t read Chinese, you can still download and try to work your way around the app.
WeChat is your replacement for WhatsApp, and why I would suggest to get a WeChat account is so that you can communicate should you need to communicate urgently. There was once that I was separated from my group, and thankfully I was able to find a café with WiFi and used WeChat to communicate. Sometimes, VPN can fail you, so it’s always better to get an app that allows direct communication.
Didi is your replacement for Uber. Sometimes, you need a taxi ride but perhaps you are too used to the e-hailing lifestyle. Didi is the app for you. Works just like Uber, except it is China version.
5) Bicycle apps
Now this was one of the things that I regretted not doing on my previous trip to China. The city of Chengdu has an excellent bicycle rental service and it’s literally so easy to cycle around the city. Sometimes, cycling is the fastest way to get to one point to another, and the rental is cheap.
The most notable bike sharing application that I’ve observed in Chengdu are OFO and Mobike. I did not do this process, but my guess it that the steps are:
1) Set up your Alipay account and top in money as told in the previous point. Make sure you sign up under the tour pass.
2) Download OFO or Mobike or both and complete the set up. Use the Alipay account to link it together.
3) Fly to China and enjoy using the service.
Again, make sure to do any downloading and signing up BEFORE heading to China.
6) Bin your toilet papers
Malaysia is blessed with an awesome sewage system, at least awesome enough that we can flush our soiled toilet papers into the toilet bowl and flush everything away. However, not everywhere is like this, and China is one of the countries that bins their soiled toilet papers instead of flushing it down. As habits are hard to break so soon, we might sometimes throw into the toilet bowl by accident or intentionally because it might be too unacceptable to bin it as it might smell or it is just pure disgusting thinking about it.
I’ve learned this the hard way in my trip, as one of my travel mate forgotten to bin his used toilet paper, and the result was that the whole toilet was clogged. By the time we managed to clear the clog, half of our day was gone and we had to throw some of our plans away due to a lack of time.
It’s real guys, you just got to bin it. It’s much more disgusting to see a clogged toilet bowl than a soiled toilet paper.  Speaking about toilets.
7) Yeah, it’s paper.
China has no bidets. So for #TeamWater, you can either shower in your accommodation, or bring wet tissue out in case the production happens outside.
8) Plug outlet
It’s different. Malaysia uses the Type G as we were once under British influence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Type G plug used in Malaysia]
China uses the Type A plug, so be sure to bring a universal adapter to the trip. My little hack is that I also bring an extension wire along to plug into the universal adapter so that I can have more plugs to charge more devices.
Tumblr media
[Type A plug used in China]
Be sure to always check for the plug outlet before visiting any countries. It’s a good investment to get a universal adapter.
9) Mala (麻辣) everywhere
At least for Chongqing and Chengdu, they take their mala very seriously. It’s hard to run away from their distinct mala taste in most of the food there. They even placed the Sichuan pepper into their stir-fried vegetables.
So if you are not a fan of mala or the numbing sensation from the mala, try to
bring some local food
from your country to compensate. Hard for me to suggest, as I’m usually very curious about the cuisines of each countries and will just try no matter how weird it is.
In a nutshell:
I hope that some of these tips can help you to prepare before heading to China. I hope that you enjoyed my blog, and do share it with those who might need it. It is a big country with too many things to offer, but some fundamental preparation will be great. I am sure after visiting ones, you will know better on some hacks. Do share it with me too! I would love to hear them!
Pack your bags, and let’s get travelling!
Just kidding, not now. Stay at home now as we are in a middle of Covid-19 pandemic.

For this, being in the visit tab, we should open the drop-down menu in the upper right of the screen and access the WhatsApp web area, where we should concentrate with the terminal camera on the previously mentioned code. Consequently, we keep on having a similar restriction as before with respect to the need to have the application introduced and portable information enacted .
For handy purposes, we will have a rendition precisely like that of programs, so the entirety of its capacities are kept up, for example, getting and sending neighborhood documents and taking recordings and photographs from inside the application utilizing the camera of our group if there should arise an occurrence of having it.It appears that with WhatsApp we need to keep on making due with the morsels that are tossed at us, particularly thinking about that its rivals (indeed, Telegram, you are the my indisputable favorite) keep on offering every one of these highlights for quite a while and in a significantly more refined.
