Setting: ABC Solutions, a leading digital marketing company in Delhi. Known for its vibrant work culture and creative output, the company had just upgraded its audio-visual studio with a new microphone. Amid celebration, a light-hearted team activity led to an unexpected storm…
Ajay Singh had been working as a content writer for 13 years. He was respected for his mastery of words and calm demeanor. One Friday, during a team engagement session, he was asked to sing using the new microphone. Hesitant but encouraged by others, he softly sang an old Hindi song from the heart.
What followed was far from expected.
Jacob Smith, the quirky video editor, decided to “spice things up.” He edited Ajay’s singing video and replaced his voice with an absurd audio track of someone screaming and shouting like a banshee. The video was posted in the official ABC Solutions WhatsApp group, followed by a cascade of laughing emojis and LOLs.
Ajay was devastated.
“They didn’t laugh at the video. They laughed at me,” he whispered to Amjad Ali, the SEO strategist.
He didn’t complain. He never shouted. But the hurt was real.
A few colleagues reached out to him privately.
Amjad Ali: Bhai, what Jacob did was wrong. I’m sorry.
Ajay Singh: I just don’t understand why someone would do that…

The Delay and the Divide at XYZ Digital Solutions
XYZ Digital Solutions was a small but growing digital marketing agency in Kolkata. With a new office set up recently in Salt Lake and a fleet of high-profile clients, the company appeared successful on the outside. However, inside the office, a storm was brewing.
Mr. Chatterjee, a sincere content writer, was getting increasingly frustrated. His salary, which was promised by the 3rd of every month, had now consistently been delayed to the 15th, whereas his colleague, Mr. Das, received his payment on time — every 3rd like clockwork.
Mr. Chatterjee (to Mr. Das): "Hey, Das-da, did you get your salary yesterday?"
Mr. Das (shrugs): "Yes, like usual. Why? You didn’t?"
Mr. Chatterjee (sighs): "Nope. It’s the same every month. They say they’re waiting on 'clearances'. But you get paid on time. Why the difference?"
Mr. Chatterjee decided he couldn't keep silent any longer.
He walked up to the glass cabin of Md. Abdullah, the CEO — a man known for his strictness and his newly purchased 7-seater SUV, which was parked glamorously outside the office.
Mr. Chatterjee (knocks, then enters): "Sir, sorry to disturb, but I wanted to ask why my salary gets delayed every month, while others receive theirs on time?"
Md. Abdullah (without looking up): "Chatterjee, the accounts team is working on staggered payments. It depends on performance and cash flow. Your role isn’t client-facing, so sometimes there's a delay."
Mr. Chatterjee (firmly): "But that doesn’t explain why only I get delayed. It's not just performance — it feels like discrimination, sir."
Md. Abdullah (irritated): "We all have to adjust. If you’re unhappy, you’re free to explore other options."
Chatterjee left the cabin, disheartened.
Later that day, he spoke to a few other employees, including Afreen, a Muslim designer, and Rajiv, an SEO executive.
Mr. Chatterjee: "I’ve worked here for 2 years. Never missed a deadline. But this delay in payment and lack of raise — it’s unfair."
Afreen (nodding): "I agree. I noticed that salary raises were selective. And it's weird — most of the team didn't get a raise, but Abdullah sir just bought that expensive SUV."
Rajiv: "He even hired new people in the new office, but we didn’t get any bonuses."
Afreen (quietly): "Some people are treated differently here. I don't think it's about religion, but… yes, it feels like bias exists in strange ways — salary, roles, even how some get praised publicly and others don’t."
Realizing they weren’t alone, the employees decided to act together.
The next day, 8 employees, including Chatterjee, Afreen, and Rajiv, sent a joint email to the HR team and marked the company’s major client, CC-ing a local labor rights organization.
"We respectfully request that salary disbursements be made equally and on time for all employees. Any form of discrimination — financial or interpersonal — weakens the team spirit. We are open to dialogue but will escalate this formally if ignored."
Within 24 hours, a meeting was called.
HR Head (nervously): "Mr. Abdullah has reviewed your concerns. Going forward, all salaries will be credited by the 5th of each month, no exceptions. Also, a performance review will be held next week for fair appraisal distribution."
Mr. Abdullah (clearing throat): "I want to say that if anything felt unequal, it wasn’t intentional. This company is built on talent, not identity. Let’s reset and move forward professionally."
Mr. Chatterjee finally got his due — not just the salary, but also the respect he deserved. The environment slowly changed. Discrimination faded when unity shone brighter than silence.
Moral of the Story: Workplace fairness doesn’t come automatically — it must be demanded through unity, transparency, and respectful assertion. Discrimination — whether based on role, religion, or favoritism — has no place in professional life.
