I don't care what nationality you are. US, UK, French, German, anyone in Europe, please do me the grandest of favours and spread this around. Steal the link, make your own post, I don't care; just get it to the eyes of your viewers because if they're Canadian, I need your help.
This petition ends May 26th 2023:
What is this about?
"Whereas:
The world is becoming increasingly hostile to transgender and nonbinary individuals;
Transgender and nonbinary people's rights to live as themselves are being restricted and removed in many places;
This includes the so-called "Western democracies" which have historically been presumed safe;
More than a dozen American states have enacted or are considering legislation eliminating or criminalizing gender-affirming care; and
Canada has prided itself on being an inclusive, tolerant, and welcoming society for everyone regardless of gender identity or gender expression.
We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to extend to transgender and nonbinary people the right to claim asylum in Canada by reason of eliminationist laws in their home countries, whatever country that may be."
It's better to give people an exit plan, and just hope they won't need it, then to do nothing and assume they'll be fine. Help us keep making Canada a positive place for everyone. I hope you'll sign if you're Canadian, and if you're not, I hope you'll help us make some positivity by sharing this around.
(Edit: A bullet point in the petitions description has been removed from this post, but remains on the petition. It's removal is due to misinformation around the UK's Equality Act 2010 only providing protection for those seeking sexual reassignment surgery. And while the Equality Act 2010 does explicitly state this, the Equality and Human Rights Commission has released an Equality Act 2019 Code of Practice document that specifies all transgender people are protected under the protected characteristic of "gender reassignment" regardless of desire to undergo the specific surgery initially identified in the Equality Act 2010 document. There has been, as of this editation, no direct quote or statement of plans to remove these protections from discrimination to the public.
I'd also like to add that there do exist protections already for 2SLGBTQIA+ folk to seek asylum in Canada, and the MP who made this petition has apparently been made aware of this, however, due to certain restrictions on that act, Canada currently lists the US as a safe country for 2SLGBTQIA+ folk because as long as there is one safe place(state, province, or territory) in the country for queer folk, the ability to seek asylum is denied. This petition clearly states a need to make a more specific clarification regarding this and open up assylum if any discriminatory laws pop up at all within a country, no matter if it's regional laws, or country wide. Specifying this because there's been a reblog or two calling this petition pointless and because I'm already clarifying UK law misinformation, might as well tackle misinformation from my own country as well. ♡)

Edward Sapir
Tumblr media
Edward Sapir, left, and his brother Max, via Darnell’s biography Edward Sapir.
Edwards Sapir was born in 1884 in what is now Lebork Poland, the son of a Jewish cantor whose dreams of being an opera star were never realized. The family often traveled for his work -- in essence, Sapir had no home town. He grew up speaking Yiddish and received a thorough training in Hebrew. In 1890 his father took a position in Richmond, Virginia and then another position in New York. Sapir was almost as mobile as his father, taking American citizenship, then Canadian, then American again in the course of his career. At the end of the day, he felt he was not really American, or Polish, or Jewish, but a New Yorker.
Sapir's incredibly intellectual gifts manifested themselves early. He attended Stuyvesant, the legendary elite public school in New York that has provided generations of poor, gifted students a pathway to success. When he was fourteen he won a city-wide academic competition and used the money to attend Columbia, where he received his BA in three years. Sapir was musical, and studied piano and composition with the composer Edward MacDowell. But his speciality was language: Competent in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English, he studied Latin and Greek in school, as well as French and Spanish. His undergraduate training was in German philology, where he studied the then-new approach of historical linguistics.
It was at Columbia that he encountered Franz Boas, who exposed him to American Indian languages. The experience was mind-blowing: a continent full of ways of thinking and expressing one's self radically different than Indo-European languages. The process of eliciting language and grammar from informants was also fascinating to Sapir. He was quickly converted. Boas was delighted with Sapir. He, like everyone else, would consider Sapir one of this best students. Sapir did his first fieldwork in the Pacific Northwest on Chinook -- a notoriously complex language. He earned his Ph.D. in 1909 and immediately landed a plum job: to direct ethnographic research in Canada.
Tumblr media

It was an amazing opportunity: Sapir would be able to shape the direction of research for an entire country, but it also came with drawbacks. Sapir moved to Ottawa and took Canadian citizenship. But Ottawa was not like Sapir's beloved New York. He missed the lack of cultural institutions and intellectual ferment. Ottawa was also very homogenous, and Sapir had trouble fitting in with the waspy Canadian upper-crust the way he was supposed to. He had hoped the job would let him do fieldwork as he pleased, but the government wanted him to be an administrator who sent other people out to do fieldwork.
Throughout this period Sapir not only produced linguistics and anthrpology, he also grew pensive. He wrote essays on culture and identity. He experimented with poetry. Partially his adventurousness was due to his boredom in Ottawa. But it also had deeper roots: His wife Florence was slowly dying. It was a long and excruciating process. For her treatments, Sapir often came to New York for extended periods. It was at this point, in the mid-1920s, that he met and fell in love with Ruth Benedict. They corresponded, and sent each other poetry. When he was in New York, she would take care of his children -- something that Benedict, who could not have children herself, especially valued. He also met Boas's new student Margaret Mead, and struck up a relationship with her which was not entirely platonic. Eventually he asked Benedict to marry him, but she refused: Sapir was a traditionalist who wanted her to become a stay at home mother and abandon her career.

After Sapir's wife passed away, he decided it was time for a change. Luckily, one was available: The University of Chicago was looking for someone to hold up the anthropology section of its sociology department (anthropology was a part of sociology at that time). It was a young, wealthy university with a commitment to pure research. Sapir was promised that he could do whatever he liked there -- it was a place where stars were given room to be themselves. So he went. It was a good move: For most of the 20th century Chicago was the center of social sciences (_all_ of them) in the US and perhaps globally.  Sapir remarried in Chicago and trained several students, including Leslie White. But it was not to last.
In 1931 Sapir left Chicago. He had been poached by Yale. Chicago had offered him freedom, but Yale offered him something even bigger: A whole institution, dedicated to his work. He could have freedom to work as well as train up students and develop new curriculum: His new interest in culture and personality. It was also in Connecticut, a convenient train ride away from New York. At Yale the now-middle-aged Sapir would not have to put up with the brutal Chicago winters. So he went.
Yale did give Sapir the opportunities it promised. He developed close relationships with other scholars interested in culture and personality. But Yale also had its drawbacks. The university was wealthy and prestigious, but it was also a haven of white privilege: "Pale, male, Yale" as the saying goes. As a Jew, Sapir was discriminated against. He was initially rejected from membership in the faculty club. He founded the sociology department, but was constantly at war with George Murdock, the protegé of William Graham Sumner, the social darwinist Sapir had replaced.
Sapir's health also began failing. He had a heart condition. It was the middle of the depression, and there was no medicare or unemployment insurance -- he had to keep teaching or else he would not support his family. He withdrew more and more from his responsibilities, but the need to earn money meant he could never get the rest that he needed to recover. Finally, he died of a heart attack in 1939.

As foreigners flock to buy old, inexpensive houses in Italy, one group has gone a step further, helping to revive a depopulated town.
Irsina, deep in the southern Basilicata region, is home to over 300 non-Italians from 12 different countries, alongside 4,000 local residents.
Until the 1960s, this hilltop village surrounded by fields had a population of 12,000, but mass emigration combined with harsh living conditions meant that by the 1960s, barely 4,500 people were living in the old historical center.
Today, things are different. Irsina in 2023 is an expat heaven of mostly retirees and American migrants living the rural Italian dream.
More than 15 families from the US and Canada have bought old properties in this remote village, known for its premium wheat fields and olive groves.
And they keep buying houses and expanding their properties, spreading the word back home of this dreamy location which seems to be frozen in time. Each time they come back, they bring along relatives and friends, all of whom become happy to spend between 20,000 and 150,000 euros ($22,000-$165,000) for a spacious dwelling with bucolic views.
Walking along the narrow alleys, all sorts of accents – American, Canadian, French, Norwegian – can be heard. There’s even a road which locals have rebranded “the Belgian Street” due to the many Belgians who live there.

Who organized the welcome home party? I'm dying to know who invited Felix. 'Ah yes, the residents of Florida who have been historically close to these guys, their best friend from a different state, and this French Canadian guy they hung out with at a gay birthday party.'
Dream organized the party or at least had the idea. In this version of events, Dream and Felix are closer friends behind the scenes than we think. They aren’t collab friends, but go to events awkwardly together friends so he’s there as Dream’s friend much like Larray is there as George’s friend
And I think xqc just moved to Miami? Or at least I was working off the presumption he was moving to Miami so in his mind he’s staying close to home to hang out with friends
Great question!

MY TRAVEL LIST
Italy- is a south-central European country, whose boot-shaped borders extend into the Mediterranean Sea. The country’s historical cities, world-renowned cuisine and geographic beauty make it a popular destination for more than 40 million tourists each year.
Switzerland-is a federal republic made up of 26 cantons and an administrative capital in Bern. Most of its citizens live in towns and cities, the most populous of which is Zurich– the most cosmopolitan of the country’s cities. The country prides itself on its diversity, and is home to regions with distinct cultural identities. German, French, Italian and Romansh languages all enjoy national status.
New Zealand-saw impressive growth and transformation in the decades following independence. The export market, abounding with dairy, sheep, beef, poultry, fruit, vegetables and wine, was opened beyond the U.K., and manufacturing and tourism were expanded. Per capita income remains high and education expenditures as a percent of gross domestic product are some of the highest in the world.
Japan-one of the world’s most literate and technically advanced nations, is an East Asian archipelago country made up of four primary islands and more than 6,800 others. While most of Japan is covered by mountains and heavily wooded areas, the country’s people lead a distinctly urban lifestyle. Long culturally influenced by its neighbors, today the country blends its ancient traditions with aspects of Western life.
Canada-takes up about two-fifths of the North American continent, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. The country is sparsely populated, with most of its residents living within 125 miles of its border with the United States. Canada’s expansive wilderness to the north plays a large role in Canadian identity, as does the country’s reputation of welcoming immigrants.
THAT'S ALL I LISTED BECAUSE IM NOT SURE ABOUT THE OTHER COUNTY, MAYBE SOON WHEN I'M OLD ENOUGH, I CAN TRAVEL THE WHOLE WORLD WITH MY HONEYBUNCH<3

When I’m writing Newsies fics sometimes the hardest part is finding headlines to put in so I’d like to share some a couple things!
The first is this link it’s the library of congress’ archive of American newspapers 1777-1963. It’s very handy. You can sort by state, year, and even by which newspapers articles were published in! You can also search for key words or phrases. All of the articles about the actual strike are on there and you can also just see what else was happening at the time. I usually use this to find headlines to include in fics haha!
The second thing I wanted to share is all the headlines that are in papers from UKsies! I got Crutchie’s cast paper and the Seize the Day “New Newsies Price” paper. I’m just going to include headlines on the post, but if you want to know more about any of them or want the full article just message me and I’d be happy to send it :)

Researchers surveyed Western Hudson Bay — home to Churchill, the town called "the Polar Bear Capital of the World," — by air in 2021 and estimated there were 618 bears, compared to the 842 in 2016, when they were last surveyed. Can you swim in the Hudson Bay? “Most people think that you can't swim here, but you totally can. In fact, the water has never been cleaner.” Gershenhorn is part of a loosely knit group of West Siders who enjoy, when the weather warms up, freely frolicking in the Hudson. What language do they speak in Hudson Bay? Kivalliq, also known as Kivallirmiutut, Caribou Eskimo, or formerly as Keewatin, is a dialect of Eastern Canadian Inuktitut which is spoken along the northwestern shores of Hudson Bay in Nunavut. Are there sharks in Hudson Bay? While it is rare to find a shark in the Hudson River, there have been several sightings over the years. Sharks may swim into the estuary from time to time but won't travel far up north, due to the freshwater. Why do people live in Hudson Bay? They make their living by fishing and hunting, some are in the trade industry and tourism. Hudson Bay was named after Henry Hudson, an Englishman who first explored the region looking for a northwestern passage to Asia at the beginning of the 17th century. Is Hudson Bay water clean? The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has listed various portions of the Hudson as having impaired water quality due to PCBs, cadmium, and other toxic compounds. Can you drink from the Hudson River? Seven communities and over 100,000 people rely on drinking water from the Hudson River. Riverkeeper helped these seven communities — the City of Poughkeepsie, Village of Rhinebeck and the Towns of Esopus, Hyde Park, Lloyd, Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck — organize as the Hudson River Drinking Water Intermunicipal Council. Is the Hudson River clean or dirty? Every New Yorker knows that while the Hudson is likely at least slightly cleaner than the East River (and certainly cleaner than the Gowanus Canal), it's by no means recommended for swimming or drinking. Profile
The following information applies to the default verse and is a basis for multiple other verses (including my canon-divergent DT ‘17 verse).
Name-  “Glittering” Goldie O'Gilt Species- Anthropomorphic Duck Eyes- Cornflower Blue Height- 2’ 11" Birthday- Sept 18, 1873 MBTI- ESFP
◃✧▹
Personality- Clever, tough, occasionally even cold, she has been a spirited lady all her life. Goldie can prance gracefully or pack a powerful punch. She can be loving and thoughtful, or sharp and fierce. Although she has been a singer and dancer, she is also a hard worker, and she does not often expect nor give things for free, unless they are deserved. Overall, how you treat her will determine how nicely, or threateningly, she treats you.
Tumblr media
For personal/rp partners' reference on this blog, I have tried filling lengthy unknown gaps of her life and logically blending her main canons. That being said, some of it is canon, some of it is historical-based, but the rest are my headcanons (with discussions and help from tcthinecwnself) that seemed important or interesting to mention.
Warning: there's a lot. Skip to the end for most interactions' relevance if you wish.
Parents
During the mid-1800s, there was an event known as the Great Famine (or Great Hunger) in Ireland. This event took the parents of a young Irish duck, and inspired him to migrate to Canada to find a new, healthier life. His name was Eoin O'Gilt.
Surviving one of the unpleasant boat trips with others who had the same idea, he did not find himself in much better shape after arriving. Moving further inland and away from so many other migration areas, he worked more than one job, saving what he could to eventually buy his own land and begin to farm again.
Before that time, however, he met a French duckess. She was not very impressed with him at first, but as a pleasant sense of humor and gentleness revealed itself from this hard working Irishman, she found herself enjoying his visits to her family’s tavern. She became Rochelle O'Gilt.
Both of their savings bought the land for that farm in the Quebec providence, and they raised three ducklings who could not have been more different in personality and life-goals.
Siblings and Growing Up
A pair of eggs were the first born, a boy and a girl. Rochelle named them Jeffrey and Amie.
A few years later, another egg came along, and Eoin was promised he could name the third. After she was born and already had golden feathers, he chose Goldie.
They did not grow up with expensive things, but they had a home and food, even if not often feasts, and love.
Goldie was determined she would go out and see more of the country, and acquire the precious metals and jewels that she had only heard of. Knowing if she stuck to the idea she would need to learn how to defend herself, Eoin taught her to fight and shoot alongside his son.
As they reached adulthood, Jeffrey remained and worked at the farm, and later expanded it. Amie was more interested in being among people and settled in Montreal. Goldie remained at home with her brother until she too became an ‘adult’ in age, then started traveling along the path of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Early Adulthood
Having her share of adventures and interesting encounters, Goldie listened and learned a great deal, from how to deal with the harsher climate to swindling tricks (it’s amazing what people will share when a pretty face is curious). She also discovered her consciousness did not bother her if she resorted to conning and theft from crude individuals or scoundrels. Sometimes, in fact, it was easier than being honest.
Within a decade, she had already made her way to the Yukon when news of the Klondike strike reached her in a lumber camp (an area that would later become Dawson), presenting a grand opportunity. A flood always accompanied the discovery of gold, and she set up shop in preparation (with the help of some of the lumberjacks she had been serving meals).
Two of the first to arrive left the strongest impressions. One was a loan-shark named Soapy Slick who wanted to use a table of her establishment for his business, and she agreed to rent it to him until he moved into his own building later. The other was a Scotsman who turned down the offer of a meal after his journey. She did not know his name, but he was pretty cute for a tough guy, him and his fluffy whiskers, and no one else ever left a moose at her door.
She watched Dawson form and grow around her due to the gold rush, making a decent profit selling food, drinks, and occasional card sharking here and there. She had little pity for gamblers who didn’t know when to quit.
The small building was rebuilt and improved to become the Blackjack Ballroom, with advice on style and some furnishings provided by a duck dubbed Dangerous Dan, who then worked with her as a co-manager and bouncer (populace and the violence accompanying crowds had begun to outweigh her ability to keep up with everything herself).
She hired some of the other ladies that had made their way to Dawson by this time, the ones with talent for entertainment, as well as a rather nice pianist who she never thought belonged in such a rough place. Goldie herself finally had not only access, but the funds for fine dresses and jewelry to wear, and she gained her historical title among others during the Klondike Gold Rush: Glittering Goldie. She also gave occasional performances of her own, receiving tips from those she hired.
She eventually learned the name of the whiskered Scotsman who left that tired moose, and heard of his past endeavors in passing conversations the rare times he came to town. He was intelligent, didn’t waste what he earned, and no one could get the jump on him– until the Steamboat incident, a story that may have received exaggeration and been regarded as legend afterward, but she beheld the aftermath in person. It proved Scrooge’s intelligence was matched by strength, an admirable duck among so many idiots and wasteful souls.
Their brief interactions since the beginning of the gold rush were not bad ones, but both were too busy to have time for casual conversation, until the day McDuck brought a very large gold nugget into her saloon. And while Goldie did not pick on him like others before it was revealed, she felt the same greed as Dan and other card gamblers when it was. Brawling soon followed when Scrooge realized she had cheated him out of it. Once the fighting was over, she was confronted, and to avoid being reported to the mounted police, she claimed she would dig him another to make up for it. His disbelief only fueled her determination, as much to prove she could accomplish anything she darn well pleased as actual payment. And maybe swipe more from such a rich claim– she did not plan on emotions getting in her way.
Goldie had helped with lumber, but she had never mined before, and proving she could did not mean she was going to be nice or quiet about a ruined dress or sorry excuse of a bed. There were many a loud disagreements at first, but with time, she noticed moments of softness that showed he was not as cold as he seemed. His mention of parents and childhood reminded her of her own, and how they would feel if she shared the less honest moments of her life away from home in an occasional letter.
Being defended from wildlife, dealing with claim jumpers together, and other events lead to more peaceful interactions between them. Slowly, she did not wear the Ice Queen facade that kept her from seeming weak in a rough town as often. Playfulness started to show itself, such as hurling a snowball at his head one day without warning.
During a long winter of mining and working together, shifting from squabbling to caring, looking after one another when ill or hurt, they accepted they were in love. As spring arrived, they intended to leave together with their stash of gold. Goldie gave him a silk Valentine before returning to Dawson to pack some of her things from the Blackjack Ballroom she had not brought to White Agony Creek, and waited at the train station that night, as they agreed.
Dan had other plans. He stole their stash, and lied to both about the other leaving without them. Goldie did not exactly trust him, of course, but they had worked together, and she had never seen him sink so low. After another person claimed to see Scrooge leave, she had to accept the possibility. She was too proud to go after him to ask why, and too hurt to go after him to shoot him. She assumed she knew the answers: greed, using someone, all to get what you wanted. Why not? She had done it, not to the extend of pretending to love, but it wasn’t a far fetched concept.
Still, after days of anger and sadness, she sent one letter after him. A letter could be ignored, and she did not have to look him in the face; she refused to be a pathetic heartbroken lover who could not accept truth. No response ever came, for the man it reached was as hurt and afraid to read it as she was to chase him. She accepted she made the mistake of thinking he was different than the rest of these gold-fever fools and cons. And she would not let herself make that mistake again.
Mid Adulthood
Goldie sold the Ballroom to Dan, for gold rushes do not last forever, and she had no desire to return to socializing often or wear a smile and put on a show for men in Dawson. She did not have to. She knew how to mine now, she would keep the claim and continue to work it herself. If Scrooge wanted it back, if he dared return, he would have to fight her for it. As far as she was concerned, she had as much right to it after working so hard for nothing, and she would not relinquish it.
She was not quite sure what she would do after hoarding the next pile for herself alone. She had traveled across the country like she wanted when she was a duckling, she had seen it and fought with it. What would she do with another stash? Maybe whenever it ran out, she would go home, work with her brother, or start a business of some kind. But she never did, for more than one reason, each one young and hungry.
Between the countless fights, bushwhacking, and accidents in Dawson and mining camps, a child was sometimes left without a parent, or a parent who would not claim/want them, or both. When she traveled to town for supplies, she found one. And later another. And more. She had no idea how to raise children, but surely she was a better option than having no one at all. Goldie took care of them, fed them, bought and repaired clothing, protected them, and they helped her in return.
Dawson’s booming dwindled, especially after gold discoveries in Alaska. Goldie and some other miners with successful claims rather than failures remained, but droves of others left. Over the next few decades, it became a much quieter, smaller city.
The children she took in grew up, and one by one left to start lives of their own, or go to higher schools. Goldie gave them sufficient funds for travel and making a start in life. One even wished to become a doctor, and she sent him funds while he attended medical school. That stash she once thought she would have and use to move and start somewhere else was instead mostly spread among them.
Later Adulthood
Her gold feathers had gained gray by the time she found herself alone again, but White Agony felt like home now. She stayed voluntarily, she had found joy in those children, more than dresses or jewels, and the idea of starting something else from the ground up again no longer held the same appeal as when she was younger. The mountains were beautiful and providing, and knowing she had supported multiple bright young adults that would undoubtedly go and accomplish great things was more satisfying than anything else she had done before.
Goldie continued to spend the next few decades fishing, farming, and surviving the winters; she was not directly affected by many other events in the world that occurred, but some of her adopted children were. She still has letters of their stories, both personal notes and things effected by wars and politics. Most of their children, however, did not continue to keep up with her. She did not mind. Why should they? They never met the rough woman one of their parents knew.
That is not to say she did not still have random adventures. The smaller Dawson was not so loud to visit, but plenty of shenanigans could occur even in a small town, especially with a few fiends like Dan leftover from the old days. She was involved in her fair share.
And she raised a baby bear, who became a big bear, and a guard bear for a silver feathered older woman.
Shenanigans involving said bear also occurred, including to keep destructive dredgers away from White Agony.
Then he showed back up. The drake she thought she would never see again, and she darn near shot him. Cue the Back to the Klondike DT ‘87 episode that I am not going to summarize in entirety, but it concludes with them learning they never betrayed each other, and while Scrooge does ask if she’ll return to Duckburg with him, she does not. It had been so long, and she had not been a part of the normal world to get used to its changes with time... she did not think she belonged in it.
Having discovered a vein during the episode and without anyone but herself to take care of, however, the option of starting over financially returned. She was old, but she was still in fine shape, so why shouldn’t she? Dawson had begun to gain tourism due to its significance during the Gold Rush, and her first investment was a hotel, restoring the abandoned Blackjack Ballroom for that purpose and a landmark. She later built additional hotels at other historical tourist areas, including Alaska.
Goldie hired some assistance for mining this time, for she was not quite as young and strong as she once was. Since she had had experience with lumbering in the past, and she did not want to jump into any modern business she knew nothing about, land and lumber were her next investments.
By the time of the Ducky Mountain High episode, White Agony had been mined out again, and while her bear remained to guard it (for that was his home and it held many years of memories for her), she had moved to another cabin among some of her timberland. Gold was discovered near it as well, and was cleverly acquired.
Additional RP Development
After establishing more than one business for herself and developing respectable, increasing income, Goldie started to visit Duckburg more often, ‘testing the water’ to see if she really could still fit into the much more civilized world.
Her adjusting to less-harsh (and alone) conditions continued, and said visits grew lengthier.
And one day, after getting to know his family and employees, after business alliances were made, after seeing for herself that she could still be a part of his life and overcoming the doubts about it– Scrooge asked her to marry him, and she did, that same day, in the bin without publicity or ceremony, just them and the few people needed to make it official.
Goldie thus becomes a permanent resident of McDuck Manor. And since she was already used to working at home, one of the spare rooms was converted into an office for her to continue to manage her own businesses by phone and ‘electronic mail.’ She doesn’t have to socialize when she doesn’t care to, she gets to be around and help raise multiple children again, and she sees the love of her life everyday. Now, she has both forms of the two greatest sources of happiness she had ever known; her drake, and family.

Two books you've never heard of, adapted into films you'll likely never see... at TIFF 2024
It's only a few more sleeps until the official schedule for TIFF 2024 is released on Tuesday, August 13th. Every major and minor film site has reported on all the biggest and best the festival has to offer, run down the celebrities that are coming, the films that will be skipping the festival, and all the gossip and speculation in between. I'm not immune to the celebrity glitz and big name directors, but two films in particular that few people have their eyes on, have piqued my interest.
Tumblr media
Last year while perusing a bookstore (I love bookstores!) a novel entitled Winter in Sokcho caught my eye. A thin volume about a young woman and her quiet life in Sokcho, South Korea, near the border of North Korea. The author is a French-Korean woman named Elisa Shua Dusapin, she depicted humble lives and simple interactions with beauty and intricacy.
Fast forward to last month, July 2024, with all its TIFF announcements... I see amongst the list of announced titles Hiver a Sokcho/Winter in Sokcho. My initial reaction included some surprise, I know that everything Korean is having a moment right now ("moment" be damned, I hope it lasts forever!) and Korean cinema is vastly popular. I guess out of all the Korean stories being told, Winter in Sokcho didn't strike me as the most "Korean". It's a story of introspection and contemplation, where one interprets much of the story from what is not said. This is the stuff you're more likely to encounter out of Japanese filmmaking.
Dig a little deeper and it'll come to light that this is the debut feature by a French-Japanese filmmaker named Koya Kamura. I don't want to typecast, but perhaps it makes sense that a Japanese filmmaker has selected this work to adapt to screen. I'm looking forward to seeing this film and what the filmmaker has to say in Q&A. How delightful it would be if the author were to come too!
Tumblr media
Much closer to home is Paying for It, a novel by acclaimed graphic novelist Chester Brown, adapted by filmmaker/artist/actress Sook Yin Lee. If you grew up in Canada in the 90's you will undoubtedly remember Sook Yin Lee as the grunge rocker VJ on Much Music, she also took on some unusual roles in a middling Canadian big screen career in the 2000's. Fun fact: she's even played current Toronto Mayor, Olivia Chow, in a 2012 TV biopic of Chow's ex-husband, politician Jack Layton.
Chester Brown is probably still best known for his historical comic series about Louis Riel. Though far from a household name, he's well-known amongst indie comic circles - ie. the entire comic world that doesn't centre around superheroes (I assume you such comics exist) His 2011 graphic novel Paying for It, now gracing the big screen, was an autobiographical tale.
This is where is gets even more interesting, Paying for It is about Brown's decision to give up on romantic love and spend time with prostitutes instead following his real-life break up with Sook Kin Lee in 1996. Now here we are closer to 3 decades into the future, and Lee is adapting her ex's book into a movie! How can you not want to see this??
As mentioned at the top of this post, the official film schedule for TIFF 2024 will be released on Tuesday, August 13th at tiff.net The website also includes information about when single ticket sales will begin for the different levels of membership and general public.
