The goods transportation industry is among the busiest industries in the world. They operate day and night without a break to help ensure that shipments reaches their destination on time. However, even after being jam-packed, there is a need for expedited transportation services. Expedited transportation refers to the fastest mode of transportation.
How Does this Work?
Many times, the sender has to send a shipment quite quickly to a customer or the person on the other end. It might happen due to urgent requirements or end-moment orders. When this happens, the sender has to find the quickest way to send their products. The collective farm, as we have seen in an earlier chapter, fits in admirably to the military organization; it already has its defense group, its labor battalions, its organization for caring for children and the weak. If the farm is in the immediate rear of the Red Army, its activities are those typified in the Ukrainian village “K.” Through its formerly quiet streets roll endless truckloads of fuel and ammunition bound for the front; in case of need, the collective farm’s machine shop offers minor repairs. Many of the farmers are now in the Army and are replaced by women. The remainder have rapidly harvested the crops and threshed more than half of them, taking them to the railroad for transport to the rear. During a brief lull on the front, fifty Red Army men came to assist in the reaping and threshing; they accounted for fifty acres of peas and forty acres of wheat before they had to go back to fight. Some forty of the farmers are working full time repairing roads for the Army. Gangs of girls and women, under the direction of Army sappers, dig trenches and camouflage them with foliage. This organized dovetailing of the activities of Army and people continues without a break if the Army is forced to retreat. Some of the civilians retreat with it as labor gangs. They destroy the village completely before they go. A detailed account of this “total destruction” was given by a village designated only as “X.” When the Germans approached, a group of young people entered the granary, loaded nine trucks, and sent them to the railway station camouflaged under green boughs. Four tons of barley and vetch, which could not be removed, were burned. The tractors plowed down and uprooted the beets. The milkmaids drove the cows through the maturing wheat and rye; they were followed by eighty girls and women with sickles and scythes who chopped up what was left. The mechanics broke the fuel tank; the blacksmiths destroyed the harvesters and thresher. The broken machinery was thrown down a steep precipice. The people burned the pigsty, cowsheds, granary, beehives, and the new stable. The best horses were driven to the forest for the use of guerrillas. Fourteen fattened pigs were slaughtered for the Red Army commissary, the rest were driven to the railroad and shipped to the rear. The wells were filled with earth, and the water from the pond was let out by breaking the dike. Even the green apples were picked by the gardener with the remark, “They shall not ripen for the robbers." If possible, the entire population of the village scatters in an organized manner. If there is time, the children and weaker adults are evacuated by train to the interior of the country; a fortnight after the war began, trains of evacuated people began arriving in Sverdlovsk and other towns of the Urals, where jobs or accommodations in rest homes were at once available for the newcomers – a fate quite different from that which befell the refugees of Western Europe. The most able-bodied of the population go into hiding in the woods as a guerrilla organization that harries the enemy’s rear under direct orders from the Red Army and often in co-ordination with the fighting at the front.

Choosing Between Truckload and Intermodal Freight: Which Suits Your Shipping Needs?
Navigating the complexities of freight shipping options is crucial for optimizing logistics and ensuring timely deliveries. At NFFI, we prioritize helping you understand the various shipping methods available, focusing particularly on truckload and intermodal services. By distinguishing between these two, we aim to guide you in selecting the most effective shipping strategy for your specific requirements.
Understanding the Differences: Truckload vs. Intermodal Shipping
Transit Times: Speed vs. Schedule Flexibility
Truckload shipping generally provides faster transit times compared to intermodal shipping. While intermodal might take additional days due to transfers between railroad lines, it’s worth considering for busy routes where rail transport can avoid traffic delays, potentially offsetting the extra transit time.
Flexibility in Origin and Destination Pairing
Truckload shipping offers unparalleled flexibility in terms of pick-up and delivery locations. Unlike intermodal shipping, which relies on fixed rail ramp locations, truckload services can cater to a wider range of origin-destination pairs, making it ideal for customized logistics solutions.
Scalability and Volume Handling
Intermodal shipping excels in scalability. Capable of handling the equivalent of 280 trucks at once, it is well-suited for large-scale transportation needs, where numerous shipments are moved simultaneously, providing a streamlined solution for bulk freight.
Dependability and Rigidity
While truckload shipping provides direct transit with fewer interruptions, intermodal might face challenges such as delays due to rail system issues. The rigid nature of rail transport means less flexibility in addressing mid-transit complications, potentially impacting delivery schedules.
Environmental Impact and Sustainability
Intermodal shipping is significantly more sustainable than truckload shipping. With the capacity to move a ton of freight up to 450 miles on just a gallon of fuel, and reducing road congestion and associated emissions, intermodal is an excellent choice for eco-conscious businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint.
Conclusion: Making the Right Choice for Your Freight Needs
Deciding between truckload and intermodal freight shipping services depends on your specific needs related to transit times, flexibility, volume, reliability, and environmental impact. At NFFI, we are dedicated to providing tailored shipping solutions that align with your logistical requirements and sustainability goals. I’m picking the thread from my skirt when Rey comes bursting in.
“He won’t stop following me!” she walks back and forth to demonstrate. “Go away” She points her finger at him, and then at the door. I laugh.
Rey argues with the orange droid as it beeps angrily… or as angrily beeps can go.
“You can understand it?” I swivel around to face her.
Rey pushes the droid away with her foot. “Yes, unfortunately,”
I smile. “What’s he saying?”
“Something about a pilot… and a stormtrooper” the droid frantically pushes her foot “I found him in some scavengers net”
“Hey come here,” I put my hands out and the droid rolls over cautiously. I spin the droid around and look for the serial number. “Hmm… he’s a republic droid”
“Like the rebels?” Rey asks. She puts out her hand and squeezes her eyes shut “like Luke Skywalker?”
When she says that the droid goes crazy, rolling back and forth beeping rapidly.
I smile. “Yes… exactly like that, thats exactly how the force works”
Rey grins. “Come on let’s go to the town,”
We walk out to the speeders as Rey chats with the droid. Rey scoffs as as the droid tells her he’s the most important droid in the galaxy.
While I'm haggling with Plutt about how good this scavenge was. Rey chats with her new friend.
Plutt raises his hand to quiet me. “The scavenge is weak... I have many other scavengers that get me better quality stuff than this" He gestures to the pile of scraps, then he looks behind me "...but- I'll take that...how much for the droid?”
“It isn’t for sale” Rey answers for me.
Plutt reaches behind him and dumps a truckload of portions on the counter. “Sixty portions.”
I turn to Rey and shoot her a look saying. Is it really not for sale?!
She gives me a look that says. Yes! Now drop it!
Suddenly the droid beeps franticly and rolls full speed for a man drinking water from an animal trough. Ew. I think. How can you be that desperate?
Rey runs after the droid and I pile the portions into my bag. Subtly sweeping a extra one. He wouldn’t notice.. right?
The man sees Rey sprinting full speed at him and runs the other way. Honestly, I couldn’t blame him. Rey chases him around the market, weaving in between stalls. Suddenly I popped out between two stalls and tripped him over.
“Hey!”
"BB-8?" The man sounds shocked.
All of a sudden TIE fighters began to shoot at the market blowing everything in their path to smithereens. “Run!” I heard someone yell.
The man dragged Rey by her wrist out of the market, in turn Rey gripped on to my arm. We fumbled around trying to escape the TIE fighters blasts.
“Over there!” Rey pointed to a ship as it blew to bits. We ran the other way. “Nevermind!”
The man leads us to a dirty-looking ship. We jumped on as the droid rolled in after us. Rey and I hopped into the cockpit and we began furiously flipping switches and pulling levers.
“Shields aren't working!”
“What should I do?” the man said, his brow furiously sweating.
“Go down there!” I messily pointed behind me. “Fire back at them!”
The man ran off. Rey pulled back on the throttle and we took off shooting into the desert, spinning and flipping the ship, trying to avoid the TIE fighters. I took a panel of of the cockpit and fiddled with wires and switches to try and get the shields on.
“Why aren't there any shields?!” I heard the mans voice over the intercom.
“I’m working on it,” I shout back. I unbuckle my seatbelt and stumble out of the cockpit, putting my arms out for balance as the ship lurches from side to side.
“Where are you going?” Rey yells as I rip another panel of of the ship.
I don’t respond.
Finally we shoot of into hyper space. I heave out a sigh.
Rey runs out of the cockpit and tackles me with a hug. We squeal and jump around.
The man walks out, shock painted over his face. His shocked expression turners into a wide grin.
I grab his arm and shake it while laughing with Rey.
Rey sticks out her hand. “Rey,” she’s grinning.
He thinks for a moment. “I’m Finn,”
They shake hands and then Finn offers his hand to me and I introduce myself.
Time skip~
Han Solo finds his ship and takes us to Maz. After Rey speaks with her she seems shaken. After the fight on Takodono, we realise that Rey was taken. Later we finally reach the rebel base.
(also I'm sorry for the time skip, but we want to get to the juicy parts right?)
I feel the ship gently touch the ground, lurching me from my thoughts. I’m pressing a rag to my side from where a stormtrooper shot me. The rag is almost soaked with blood at this point.
Where are you, Rey? I think. Why are you making me do this?
I do something that I haven’t done in years. I close my eyes and try to reach out to her with the force. I feel the energy around me buzzing. I try to reach out beyond that, I let myself go back to Takondo, the last place I saw her. I know the force is strong with her, but I’ve never said anything. I didn’t want her to be burdened with it like I am.
I reach my mind out further. I feel something… it's dark.
Han Solo walks over, jerking me from the force. “Listen, kid… we’ll get her bac-” he’s going to say something but I can see him rethink his words. “Don’t get on their bad side,” he jerks his head towards the rebel base. "more so, don't get on the generals' bad side, she's a real pain in the-" He walks off muttering about the general.
“...okay,” I slowly stand up, clutching my side. I look over to Finn. He’s sitting with his elbows on his thighs and his head in his hands.
I put my hand on his shoulder. “We’ll get her back,”
I turn around and follow Han and Chewie out. I see rebel soldiers run over to us. Someone sees the blood from my side and yells “Medic!”
I guess it's worse than I thought.
I feel Han put his hand on the upper part of my back, steadying me. I realise I'm swaying.
I hear Finn’s voice, “God! Where are the medics?”
“Kid?” I hear Han say.
“Hm?”
"Nothing you're just really pale, kid"
He turns the the rebel solider running towards to us. He’s in a fluro-orange flight suit, and he swipes his brown curly hair out of his face as he approaches us.
“Finn?!” he says, running to give Finn a bear hug, he punches his shoulder. “I thought you were dead.”
“I thought you were dead!” Finn says, the grin on his face widening, his smile drops when he remembers I’m bleeding out.
“We need a medic,”
“Agreed.” Finn’s friend turns around and yells for a medic, people quickly scramble to get one. I see his eyes on me, they look me up and down. My cheeks don't flush because I'm losing so much blood-
Suddenly the droid pops out of the Falcon, zooming at the man in the flight suit.
“BB-8!” He exclaims. “I missed you!”
How can you miss a droid? I thought. I roll my eyes. I look back to the man in the flight suit, he’s looking at me. God, I hope he didn’t see that.
Of the bat I cant help but notice how handsome he is. His dark curly hair lays on his forehead, lightly swaying in the breeze. And his eyes, god they are so dark. There dark and warm, like a cup of deep hot cocoa. When he talks his jawline could cut glass.
I feel myself buckle in the knees, not because of his ‘rugged’ looks. I feel faint. Finn rushes to my side. “You okay?”
"What d'you think?" I say through gritted teeth.
Finn turns to the man in the flight suit. “Where are those medics, Poe?”
“I don’t know,” Poe takes a step toward me, holding out his arms slightly as if I were about to collapse.
I let out a pained laugh that really sounded more like a yelp of pain. I fall to the floor. My vision goes dark at the edges. I hear voices muffled my a high pitched ringing. The last thing I see is Poe above me yelling my name.

Three years after receiving a $700 million pandemic-era lifeline from the federal government, the struggling freight trucking company Yellow is filing for bankruptcy.
After monthslong negotiations between Yellow’s management and the Teamsters union broke down, the company shut its operations late last month, and said on Sunday that it was seeking bankruptcy protection so it could wind down its business in an “orderly” way.
“It is with profound disappointment that Yellow announces that it is closing after nearly 100 years in business,” the company’s chief executive, Darren Hawkins, said in a statement. Yellow filed a so-called Chapter 11 petition in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.
The downfall of the 99-year-old company will lead to the loss of about 30,000 jobs and could have ripple effects across the nation’s supply chains. It also underscores the risks associated with government bailouts that are awarded during moments of economic panic.
Yellow, which formerly went by the name YRC Worldwide, received the $700 million loan during the summer of 2020 as the pandemic was paralyzing the U.S. economy. The loan was awarded as part of the $2.2 trillion pandemic-relief legislation that Congress passed that year, and Yellow received it on the grounds that its business was critical to national security because it shipped supplies to military bases. Government watchdogs have scrutinized the loan because of the company’s financial turmoil and close ties to the Trump administration, which awarded the loan.
Since then, Yellow changed its name and embarked on a restructuring plan to help revive its flagging business by consolidating its regional networks of trucking services under one brand. As of the end of March, Yellow’s outstanding debt was $1.5 billion, including about $730 million that it owed to the federal government. Yellow has paid approximately $66 million in interest on the loan, but it has repaid just $230 of the principal owed on the loan, which comes due next year.
The fate of the loan is not yet clear. The federal government assumed a 30% equity stake in Yellow in exchange for the loan. It could end up assuming or trying to sell off much of the company’s fleet of trucks and terminals. Yellow aims to sell “all or substantially all” of its assets, according to court documents. Mr. Hawkins said the company intended to pay back the government loan “in full.”
The White House declined to comment.
Yellow estimated that it has more than 100,000 creditors and more than $1 billion in liabilities, per court documents. Some of its largest unsecured creditors include Amazon, with a claim of more than $2 million, and Home Depot, which is owed nearly $1.7 million.
Yellow is the third-largest small-freight trucking company in a part of the industry known as “less than truckload” shipping. The industry has been under pressure over the last year from rising interest rates and higher fuel costs, while customers have been reluctant to accept higher prices.
Those forces collided with an ugly labor fight this year between Yellow and the Teamsters union over wages and other benefits. Those talks collapsed last month and union officials soon after warned workers that the company was shutting down.
After its bankruptcy filing, company officials placed much of the blame on the union, saying its members caused “irreparable harm” by halting its restructuring plan. Yellow employed about 23,000 union employees.
“We faced nine months of union intransigence, bullying and deliberately destructive tactics,” Mr. Hawkins said. The Teamsters union “was able to halt our business plan, literally driving our company out of business, despite every effort to work with them,” he added.
In late June, the company filed a lawsuit against the union, asserting it had caused more than $137 million in damages by blocking the restructuring plan.
The Teamsters union said that Yellow’s executives unjustly blamed the union for the demise of the company, which had been “plagued with financial trouble for nearly two decades,” officials said in a statement.
“Teamster families sacrificed billions of dollars in wages, benefits and retirement security to rescue Yellow,” said Sean O’Brien, the union’s general president. “The company blew through a $700 million government bailout.” Calling Yellow’s top executives “dysfunctional” and “greedy,” he blamed them for failing to “take responsibility for squandering all that cash.”
The bankruptcy could create temporary disruptions for companies that relied on Yellow and might prompt more consolidation in the industry. It could also lead to temporarily higher prices as businesses find new carriers for their freight.
“Those inflationary prices will certainly hurt the shippers and hurt the consumer to a certain extent,” said Tom Nightingale, chief executive of AFS Logistics, who suggested that prices would probably normalize within a few months.
In late July, Yellow began permanently laying off workers and ceased most of its operations in the United States and Canada, according to court documents. Yellow has retained a “core group” of about 1,650 employees to maintain limited operations and provide administrative work as it winds down. Yellow said it expected to pay about $3.4 million per week in employee wages to operate during bankruptcy, which “may decrease over time.” None of the remaining employees are union members, the company said.
The company also sought the authority to pay an estimated $22 million in compensation and benefit costs for current and former employees, including roughly $8.7 million in unpaid wages as of the date of filing.
Yellow had readily accessible funds of about $39 million when it filed for bankruptcy, which it said would be insufficient to cover its wind-down efforts, and it expected to receive special financing to help support the sale process and payment of wages.
Jack Atkins, a transportation analyst at the financial services firm Stephens, said that Yellow’s troubles had been mounting for years. In the wake of the financial crisis, Yellow engaged in a spree of acquisitions that it failed to successfully integrate, Mr. Atkins said. The demands of repaying that debt made it difficult for Yellow to reinvest in the company, allowing rivals to become more profitable.
“Yellow was struggling to keep its head above water and survive,” Mr. Atkins said. “It was harder and harder to be profitable enough to support the wage increases they needed.”
David P. Leibowitz, a Chicago bankruptcy lawyer who represents several trucking companies, said Yellow had found itself in a “perfect storm, and they have not managed that perfect storm very well.”
The company’s financial problems fueled concerns. It lost more than $100 million in 2019 and was being sued by the Justice Department over claims that it defrauded the federal government during a seven-year period. Last year it agreed to pay $6.85 million to settle the lawsuit.
Congressional oversight committees have scrutinized the company’s relationships with the Trump administration. President Donald J. Trump tapped Mr. Hawkins to serve on a coronavirus economic task force, and Yellow had financial backing from Apollo Global Management, a private equity firm with close ties to Trump administration officials.
Democrats on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis wrote in a report last year that top Trump administration officials had awarded Yellow the money over the objections of career officials at the Defense Department. The report noted that Yellow had been in close touch with Trump administration officials throughout the loan process and had discussed how the company employed Teamsters as its drivers.
In December 2020, Steven T. Mnuchin, then the Treasury secretary, defended the loan, arguing that had the company been shuttered, thousands of jobs would have been at risk and the military’s supply chain could have been disrupted. He predicted that the federal government would eventually turn a profit from the deal.
“Yellow had longstanding financial problems before the pandemic, was not essential to national security and thus should never have received a $700 million taxpayer bailout from the Treasury Department,” Representative French Hill, Republican of Arkansas and a member of the Congressional Oversight Commission, said in a statement. “Years of poor financial management at Yellow has resulted in hard-working people losing their jobs.”
