We were told today that hours for on-call employees would be severely restricted through the summer, and I just got my work schedule listing the second week in a row with zero shifts. Guess it's time to file for some UI assistance again, at least until things pick up. * blah *
My supervisor made a point of telling me that her reviews of my work are all positive, etc., and the lack of hours isn't a reflection on me or the contributions I make. Which is nice. But apparently interns get paid out of the same bucket as on-call workers (like me), so the addition of summer interns limits the available hours for on-call. And I can hardly begrudge hours for the interns, considering that I was an intern for the exact same copy desk nine years ago.
I did file the application online to (re)open my unemployment case in the wee hours of Monday morning. Now I just have to wait and see.
I've been thinking of joining the Guild ever since I came back to the Bee last year, but it took me until to today to find out whether on-call workers were eligible. (Ed believes they are, but I haven't applied yet.) My only concern about joining is whether membership would have any negative effect on my employment status.
I don't really understand what the potential benefits of collective bargaining are, which is part of my reservation about joining the union, but it sounds good on the face of it, particularly since as an on-call worker, I feel my job security is tenuous at best. I need to read more about it and talk to some members. If I don't understand the pros and cons of membership, it's hard to justify my decision either way, to join or not.

Navigating Justice: A Tale of Parole and Compassion
Tumblr media
Ramesh v. State of NCT Delhi
WP (Crl)1322/2024
Before the Delhi High Court
Heard by Hon’ble Madam Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma J
Order
The writ petition was dismissed as #premature. The petitioner should have waited for the outcome of his application for #parole filed by him before Jail Authorities. Jail Authorities were directed to treat the present writ petition as a representation of the petitioner & decide the same as per the Prison Rules.
The authorities were requested to expedite the process of consideration looking into the medical and financial condition of his elder brother and passing an order on the petitioner’s application for parole.
Background
1.     The petitioner is a #convict for offence u/s 302/34 of IPC and Section 27 of the Arms Act.
2.     The petitioner was sentenced to #lifeimprisonment, by the Trial Court.
3.     His #appeal against the conviction was #dismissed by the Delhi High Court on 25.05.2009.
4.     In the present Writ Petition, the petitioner is seeking parole on the ground that his elder brother is suffering from Tuberculosis of the Spine and lower Urinary Tract. As a younger brother, he needs to look after his medical and financial needs.
Observation of the Court
1.     The petitioner has already submitted an application seeking parole before the Jail Authorities & without waiting for the outcome of his application and the stipulated period for deciding such applications as per #DelhiPrisonRules, the present petition was filed just 4-5 days after the filing of the petition.
2.     The practice of filing writ petitions for a grant of parole or #furlough within a few days of applying to the jail/competent authorities, has to be condemned.
3.     Such practice only adds to the #burden of the #Courts, as to pass an order, the Courts have to go through the order of rejection of furlough or parole to ascertain the reasons for such refusal.
4.     Moreover, at times, such writ petitions are filed before Courts without waiting for the outcome, and in the meanwhile, the authorities concerned decide the applications in the favor of such petitioners, which makes the entire process of filing writ petitions, a futile exercise.

my friend is trying to get some medical stuff taken care of despite their lack of funds for general living costs because their insurance runs out very soon, if you can spare anything at all, or share this (+ any of my other posts about donations for them and their partner and their two dogs), it’ll be so meaningful

Today was rough. Called my reporter at 3, when I hadn't yet seen his story for the Education section front, only to find out that he didn't HAVE a story for tomorrow's paper, so I had to improvise with a wire story to beat my 5 o'clock press deadline … Got told by the school that my daughter couldn't pick up her graduation announcements & other supplies because they show we still owe $168 -- that I PAID back in JANUARY … Our entertainment editor is on furlough this week, so I'm scrambling to cover his pages, and I'm just not any good at figuring out how he organizes his stuff from the wire services … I was, like, an hour late picking up my kids, because I just can't get away from work on time … So, you know, it was just one of those days. But I'm home now. My family took care of dinner and gave me something soothing to drink -- so it's good to be home. 🙂

I am BACK! I had a blast in Vegas, it was so much fun. I sadly had an overnight flight on the way back, which resulted in me being on planes or in airports for 24 hours!!!! Which honestly was a terrible idea but my flight was free so beggars can't be choosers. That meant that my entire friday and saturday were kind of ruined, and I wasn't in the mood for writing while waiting around the airport. Actually I did a lot of dozing and people watching lol. Then today I was recovering from the trip and had to take my final exam. BUT!!!!! I am DONE!!!!!
I'm going to work on the next chapter briefly before bed, and hopefully I can get it done and pushed out tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
