Title: From Prison Yards to Campus Quads: How Education for the Homie Students Is Growing and Why We Need Better Transitions
Over the past few years, education programs in California state prisons have been blowing up, giving incarcerated folks—the homie students—the chance to earn GEDs, vocational certificates, and even college degrees. Programs like Rising Scholars and Underground Scholars are out here changing lives, showing people behind bars that there’s more to life than the system that’s tried to keep them down. But while these programs are making waves, there’s still a big gap when it comes to helping the homie students transition from in-prison education to community colleges and universities once they’re released.
Most of the homie students coming out of prison aren’t just dealing with school stuff—they’re carrying the weight of violence, trauma, and survival from both inside and outside. The streets don’t let up, and neither does the system. So, how do we make sure that when the homie students step onto campus, they’re not just thrown into the deep end? How can colleges meet the needs of folks who’ve been through it and are now trying to build something better for themselves and their communities?
---
1. How Prison Education Is Growing for the Homie Students
California’s been leading the charge when it comes to bringing education into prisons. Programs like Rising Scholars are spreading across the state, giving incarcerated students a shot at real education, not just busywork. Plus, with Pell Grants back on the table, more people can afford to go after their degrees while they’re locked up. These programs aren’t just about getting a piece of paper—they’re about giving people the tools to break free from the cycle of incarceration and build something real.
But here’s the thing: education doesn’t stop when the prison gates open. That transition from the yard to the classroom is where a lot of the homie students hit a wall. The support they had inside doesn’t always follow them outside, and too many are left feeling lost, isolated, and overwhelmed.
---
2. Why We Need Stronger Transitions for the Homie Students
If we’re serious about using education as a tool for freedom, we’ve got to make sure that transition from prison to college is smooth. Here’s what’s needed:
a) Solid Transition Programs:
Colleges need Bridge Programs that are built for the homie students. These programs can link people up with mentors, academic advisors, and workshops that break down everything from financial aid to navigating life on the outside.
b) Homie Support Networks:
Programs like Underground Scholars prove that there’s nothing like having a crew that gets you. Peer support isn’t just about friendship—it’s about survival. The homie students need spaces where they feel seen and heard, where they can share their stories without judgment.
c) Trauma-Informed Practices:
Let’s be real—prison isn’t just about serving time. It’s about surviving trauma. From the streets to the cells, the homie students have been through it all. Colleges need to step up with trauma-informed practices—that means counseling services, safe spaces, and training for professors so they know how to support students who’ve lived through serious struggles.
---
3. The Real Struggles the Homie Students Face After Prison
Getting out of prison and stepping onto a college campus sounds good in theory, but the homie students face some real challenges:
Housing and Money Problems: Most folks coming out don’t have stable housing or a job lined up. Colleges need to partner with local groups to help find housing and job opportunities.
Mental Health Struggles: The mental health toll from prison life is real. PTSD, anxiety, depression—you name it. The homie students need access to affordable, accessible mental health support.
Catching Up on Academics: Some of the homie students haven’t been in a classroom for years, and even if they have, prison education isn’t always up to par. They need tutoring, remedial classes, and flexible learning options to get back on track.
---
4. How Colleges Can Step Up for the Homie Students
If colleges in California really want to support the homie students, they’ve got to do more than just admit them. It’s about creating an environment where they can thrive.
a) Create Spaces That Feel Like Home:
Professors and staff need to be trained on how to work with system-impacted students. Colleges should be safe spaces where the homie students feel like they belong, not like outsiders.
b) Build Strong Ties with Prisons:
Colleges need to connect directly with prisons to help prepare students before they’re released. Pre-release college readiness programs can make sure the homie students hit the ground running.
c) Give Homie Students a Chance to Lead:
The homie students should have opportunities to lead on campus. Whether it’s through student government, clubs, or events, giving them a voice helps them—and the entire campus—grow.
---
5. Education as Liberation for the Homie Students
At the end of the day, education is more than just books and grades. It’s about freedom. It’s about giving the homie students the chance to rewrite their stories and break the cycles that have held them down for too long. But for education to truly set people free, it needs to extend beyond prison walls.
By building stronger bridges between prison education and community colleges, we can make sure the homie students aren’t just surviving—they’re thriving. It’s time for California’s colleges to step up, meet the homie students where they’re at, and recognize the strength, resilience, and brilliance they bring to the table.
---
When we invest in education, we’re not just investing in individuals—we’re investing in entire communities. Let’s keep building these bridges for the homie students, because their success is our success.

Which institute is best for GATE coaching in Chandigarh?
Are you ready to take your engineering career to the next level? Look no further than GATE, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Considered one of the most prestigious exams for aspiring engineers, cracking GATE opens doors to postgraduate programs and lucrative job opportunities. But here’s the question: How do you prepare for this challenging exam? While self-study is an option, many students find that enrolling in a coaching institute can greatly enhance their chances of success. In Chandigarh, there are several institutes offering GATE coaching, but which one is truly the best? Let’s delve into this topic and discover why GATEFORUM stands out as the premier institute for GATE coaching in Chandigarh!
Which course is best for GATE preparation?
When it comes to GATE preparation, choosing the right course can make all the difference. There are various options available, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Let’s explore a few popular choices.
1. Classroom Coaching: This traditional approach allows you to attend regular classes where experienced teachers guide you through the syllabus. It provides structure, interactive learning, and a chance to clarify doubts in real-time.
2. Online Courses: Ideal for those who prefer flexibility and convenience, online courses offer recorded lectures, study materials, and practice tests that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. They often include discussion forums or doubt-clearing sessions for additional support.
3. Postal/Correspondence Courses: If you prefer self-study but still want guidance from experts, postal or correspondence courses provide study materials by mail along with mock tests and solutions.
4. Crash Courses: Designed for students with limited time or those who have already covered most of the syllabus on their own, crash courses focus on revision and intensive practice sessions.
Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to which course is best for GATE preparation — it depends on your individual learning style, schedule constraints, and level of self-discipline.
Regardless of the course you choose, consistency in studying and solving previous years’ question papers is key! So weigh your options carefully before making a decision that aligns with your goals and preferences.
Can I crack GATE without coaching?
One of the common questions that aspiring GATE candidates have is whether it is possible to crack the exam without joining a coaching institute. The answer to this question is yes, it is entirely possible to crack GATE without coaching. However, it requires a lot of self-discipline, dedication, and effective study strategies.
Self-study plays a crucial role in preparing for any competitive exam, including GATE. Many successful candidates have achieved remarkable results by studying on their own. With the right study materials and resources available online or through books, you can grasp all the necessary concepts and topics required for the exam.
However, cracking GATE without coaching requires meticulous planning and an organized approach towards your studies. You need to create a proper study schedule that covers all the subjects and topics within the given time frame. Additionally, solving previous years’ question papers and taking mock tests regularly will help you gauge your strengths and weaknesses.
While self-study may be sufficient for some individuals with strong determination and discipline, joining a good coaching institute can provide additional benefits such as structured guidance from experienced faculty members who are well-versed with the intricacies of the exam pattern.
Cracking GATE without coaching is possible but demands rigorous self-study coupled with consistent practice. It’s essential to identify your learning style and choose a method that suits you best — whether it’s through self-preparation or by seeking guidance from professionals at reputed institutes like GATEFORUM in Chandigarh
Is 3 months enough for GATE preparation?
Is 3 months enough for GATE preparation? This is a common question among aspiring GATE candidates who are short on time. While it may seem like a daunting task to prepare for such a competitive exam in just three months, it is certainly possible with the right strategy and dedication.
It’s important to understand that the effectiveness of your preparation depends on how efficiently you utilize those three months. It’s not about the quantity of time spent studying, but rather the quality of your study sessions. With focused and consistent efforts, you can cover all the necessary topics and revise them thoroughly.
To make the most out of your limited time, create a well-structured study plan that includes daily targets and milestones. Identify your strengths and weaknesses early on so that you can allocate more time to challenging subjects while revising familiar ones. Utilize online resources, mock tests, and previous year papers to assess your progress regularly.
Additionally, enrolling in a reputable GATE coaching institute can greatly enhance your chances of success within this tight timeframe. A good coaching institute will provide comprehensive study material, experienced faculty members who have cracked GATE themselves, regular doubt-solving sessions, and simulated test series to help you gauge your performance.
Remember that consistency is key. Even if you have limited time available each day due to other commitments or work responsibilities, make sure to dedicate at least a few hours solely towards GATE preparation without any distractions.
In conclusion (without using “in conclusion”!), while 3 months may seem like a short period for GATE preparation compared to longer durations some individuals may take; with proper planning, effective utilization of resources including joining an esteemed coaching institute like GATEFORUM in Chandigarh — one can certainly achieve commendable results even within this timeframe

Unmasking our flawless facades
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 3: Reimei visit (3/3)
Characters in this chapter : - HiMERU - Sazanami Jun - Tomoe Hiyori
Tumblr media
Read Chapter 1 here!
Tumblr media
-- Location: Reimei corridors --
Tumblr media
"Kazehaya... Tatsumi" is out of the hospital? You had never heard of that name before. Jun said something about a senpai being hospitalized while he made you tour the academy. He must be this person. Reimei's revolutionary.
You resume looking for the specific Open House day classroom.
-- Location: Reimei classroom --
Tumblr media
Two of the teachers there are giving a lecture about the new courses coming in the next school year. You sit on one of the chairs, next to a student from Reimei.
Teacher 1 - "Unfortunately, our school only offers 2 of the 3 new programs: Producer and Designer. As the Shuuetsu Academy is at the top of the CosPro hierarchy, they do have all 3 of them unlike us. Both of our academies, however, follow the same policy: you can change your major mid-year without any difficulty. This is because all 4 programs - Idol, Manager, Designer, and Producer - share a similar curriculum, only the activities vary."
Teacher 2 - "Though I may confirm today that the Idol course is still only available to male students as of right now. Nonetheless, feel free to come to pick up some flyers in the teacher's room."
Interesting. This means that going to the Shuuetsu Academy is strategically better since it offers a more varied course choice.
You continue to listen to their presentation. ... ♪
.
.
A faint noise from the outside catches your attention. Through the classroom window, you see a crowd of Reimei students forming around someone. Unless your eyes are deceiving you, it seems they are all Special idol Students, judging by their striped ties. You get a glimpse at the one who is at the center of it all: a blue-haired man with golden eyes.
As soon as the boy next to you witnessed the scene, he got up and left the classroom to follow the crowd outside.
'What is with this hype? Is he a super famous idol?'
.
.
.
-- Location: Reimei corridors --
-- Time: Around 5 pm --
Tumblr media
The reception conference lasted for about an hour. You still have one hour to kill before meeting up with Hiyori and Jun for dinner.
It is still snowing a bit outside and the sun is setting. Even though the area around Reimei is restricted, you remember passing by a convenience store while on the bus. Maybe they are selling some hot chocolate or something to warm you up there. You walk down the school's lower floor.
On your walk, you pass by the teacher's room. One of the faculty members mentioned some flyers -about the courses- being made available there earlier. Even if you seem to favor the Shuuetsu Academy's options, it is always good to have a Plan B.
Teacher - "Here are your last administrative papers. I am so sorry about what happened, I am delighted that you recovered and I hope you will find your place in the Shuuetsu Academy. Though I don't worry much about that."
?? - "Thank you, Sensei," he says as he collects a pile of paperwork and puts it in his bag.
Another faculty staff hands you a flyer. You grab it and leave the room at the same time as the other student they were talking to.
After a second long look, while walking towards the exit, you realize this student was the one at the center of the gate commotion previously. His face does not look very familiar to you even though, as a producer, you are pretty up-to-date with recent popular idols.
Tumblr media
?? - "Hmm? Do you have something to say to HiMERU? A fan maybe?"
You - "Ah", you say as he caught you off guard. "No. Sorry, I didn't mean to stare at you. I just happened to see you from afar earlier."
HiMERU - "I see. HiMERU is sorry for the assumption", he says as the both of you head out for the exit door.
-- Location : Reimei entrance --
Tumblr media
It seems to have stopped snowing. However, as you step foot outside, you feel the first drops of rain falling on your skin. Next to you, HiMERU looks down while looking at his paperwork. You assume it must be because he did not plan the sudden rain.
You - "Excuse me, we can share my umbrella if you want."
He looks surprised.
HiMERU - "Thank you but HiMERU doesn't need it. Besides, HiMERU does not need useless rumors spreading around."
You - "I saw you getting handed a bunch of paperwork, it would be better for those not to get wet. And don't worry about your reputation, I'm just gonna walk if that's an issue."
You open your umbrella and hand it to him.
HiMERU - "What about you though?"
You - "It's fine. I don't have any important documents on me and I can just hurry to my destination, it's not too far from here. You can just take it," you reply selflessly.
He gently grabs the handle and covers you both as the rain is getting heavier and heavier. He looks like he is hesitating on his next move.
Tumblr media
HiMERU - "... Where were you heading to?"
You - "I was going to the nearest convenience store, though I'm unsure about its exact location and how to get there."
HiMERU - "Well," he sighs. "I guess HiMERU can accompany you there."
You - "Thank you but what about your reputation then?"
HiMERU - "It is getting quite dark anyways, people won't be able to recognize HiMERU anymore under this rain. And the path to the convenience store is usually vacant."
You - "Oh well, thank you! As you can tell from my Yumenosaki uniform, I'm not very familiar with the area haha. So your help is very welcome!"
The two of you start walking together. HiMERU holds the umbrella covering you both -as he is taller-, and guides you around the area.
The street sounds relatively calm and silent. After all, the Reimei Academy is placed in a quite deserted area. The only active people there would be the Reimei students, but most of them are inside their dorms as it is a weekend evening. As for the other visiting students like you, they all rushed towards the first bus station after the sudden heavy rain. Nonetheless, the sound of the drops of rain tapping on the umbrella is quite relaxing... ♪
You - "So, I heard by chance in the faculty room that you are going to transfer to the Shuuetsu Academy?"
HiMERU - "You don't need to know HiMERU's business. But since it will become public information soon, HiMERU can tell you that he's indeed going to transfer to the Shuuetsu Academy."
You - "Okay. Well, I might see you there," you tell him with a smile.
HiMERU - "Oh? I assumed you were going to enroll in Reimei since you are visiting today."
You - "You're not wrong, I'm just hesitating right now. I have some friends in Reimei but Shuuetsu has a more varied course choice."
HiMERU - "Doesn't Yumenosaki offer even more courses, such as the Singing, Vocal, Music, and Theater courses? So why switch schools?"
You - "It's a long story...", you say with a low voice. "But what about you? I saw people running to see you earlier, you seem to be pretty appreciated here so why transferring?", you ask curiously.
HiMERU - "That..."
He does not reply but his expression says it all, even if he tries to keep a neutral expression. It looks like both of you asked the wrong questions. The atmosphere suddenly becomes quite heavy. HiMERU points to the grocery store in the distance.
Tumblr media
Even though it is a Saturday, the shop is open: lucky! Well, that chat was short...
As the two of you are walking lost in thoughts towards the shop, thinking about what made you change schools, you are quickly set back to reality after the thunder hits.
You - "!!"
HiMERU - "!!"
You - "T-that woke me up! Maybe before going back, you should wait and stay under a roof for a moment", you tell him as you enter the grocery store and take a look inside. "You can come with me if you want. It looks like the place is empty, so there's no risk of your reputation potentially getting damaged."
Tumblr media
HiMERU - "HiMERU does not-", he stops. "Sure," he says as he joins you inside.
-- Location: convenience store --
Tumblr media
HiMERU sits in the store's meal area, looking through his phone.
While in the shop, you are looking for something to buy for Jun, as a thank you for making you visit the school. Of course, Hiyori will get something as well.
You - "Say, HiMERU-san (?), what kind of gift should I buy for a friend? Would you rather have something to eat or...?"
HiMERU - "HiMERU likes breath mints but he doesn't know about your friend."
You - "Understandable," you say as you sneakily take a pack of them.
You then go for the strawberry candies for Jun and for the chocolate ones for Hiyori. While manually checking out, you also purchase two hot chocolates through the indoor vending machine.
You join HiMERU and take sit in front of him. You hand him a cup of hot chocolate and the mint candies.
You - "For you!"
HiMERU - "Thank you but why?", he asks, embarrassed.
You - "It's cold outside. You're an idol right? I have idol friends, and I got used to making sure they never catch a cold", you reply enthusiastically. "And for the candies, well, take them as a gift!"
HiMERU - "Thank you...", he repeats with a smile.
While the two of start drinking, you burn your tongue on your beverage.
You - "!!", you release a faint noise.
HiMERU laughs discreetly at your awkwardness. You catch a glimpse of a genuine smile on his face before he returns to his natural serious expression. You take a deeper look at him. Student from the Reimei Academy, blue hair, golden almond eyes, handsome... That is when it hits you. A bit more than a year ago, you saw "HiMERU" doing his debut on TV.
HiMERU - "?"
You - "Wait I think I saw your debuts actually. I hadn't memorized your name though, that's why it didn't ring a bell when you presented yourself."
HiMERU - "Hmm. Is that so?"
You - "Your image looks a bit different though. If I recall correctly, a year ago, you seemed like a cute idol who tried his best to appear serious? But now it looks like you are naturally so haha."
HiMERU - "...!"
He looks surprised.
Tumblr media
HiMERU - "Should HiMERU appear more 'cute' then?", he asks you with the most earnest expression known to man.
You - "I don't kno-", you stop as HiMERU takes your hand.
Tumblr media
HiMERU - "Or maybe a more mature image would suit HiMERU now, yes?", he says as he kisses the back of your hand.
Surprised, to say the least, your heart skips a bit.
HiMERU - "Your comment has been heard, though. HiMERU will try not to forget about his old image. After all, he won't let his first fans down", he says with a serious expression as he lets go of your hand.
Himeru looks at you in the eyes to see if his persuading trick worked, only to realize that you are blushing and are too flustered to hold eye contact with him.
HiMERU - "Hm...? HiMERU thought you had some idol friends. Aren't you used to seeing them act like this?", he asks you playfully.
You - "Hum", you stutter after getting back to your senses. "Well as you said, they are my friends, so I know when they are just playing with me. But I was not expecting that...", you reply while trying to maintain a composed figure.
However, despite your efforts to hide the effect he had on you, the man did notice the shift in your attitude after he kissed your hand. He is very observant of his surroundings after all.
As the two of you resume quietly and awkwardly drinking your beverages -you because of shyness after what happened, and Himeru because of his effect on you-, you notice that both the storm and the rain have gone away. This silence also made the two of you realize that night has completely fallen. It is almost 6 pm on a winter evening after all. Himeru finally breaks the silence.
HiMERU - "So how are you going to get back home? It's already pitch black outside."
You - "Oh, uh, I don't really know. Maybe..."
He knows the area is not very safe for a lady at night: the only not-empty place is an all-boys boarding school around the corner. Plus he also noticed that there weren't many people on the path you two took to the convenience store: it would be even more vacant on your way back...
HiMERU - "Do you need a ride home? HiMERU was going to order a taxi. If you want, it could drop you home as well. HiMERU will pay for it of course."
Wow... Sharing a taxi with a gentleman you just met sounds like one of those shōjo mangas' plots, in a good way. You cannot say that this does not make you feel flattered.
You - "Really? Thank you so much for your proposition HiMERU-san! I would have gladly accepted but I'll be meeting some friends soon, I will ask them to drive me home."
HiMERU - "HiMERU understands," he says as he sends a phone message to a taxi.
"🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵!"
Your phone rings. You pick it up. Hiyori's name is showing on your screen, you accept the call.
📞Hiyori (on the phone) - "WHERE ARE YOU? ♪", your phone blasts as you instantly lower the volume and turn off the speaker mode. "Hey, Y/N-chan! Our practice is over, are you still inside Reimei?"
You - "I'm out of the school property, I'm inside the grocery store nearby!"
📞Hiyori (on the phone) - "Okay got it. Chauffeur please go to the convenience store down the street," he says to his driver. "See you in a minute!"
You - "See you!", you reply to him as you hang up. "Sorry about that," you say to HiMERU.
HiMERU - "It's fine."
You - "I'm gonna wait outside for my friends."
HiMERU - "Let HiMERU wait for them with you," he says as you both stand up.
You - "Thank you so much! But aren't you waiting for a taxi?"
HiMERU - "It is okay. HiMERU is going to buy some flowers before getting in the taxi anyway. Besides, it hasn't arrived yet, HiMERU just sent them a message. So HiMERU can wait with you."
Flowers, he said? Does he have a green thumb? Or maybe they are for someone else...?
He opens the shop's door for you and lets you get out first.
HiMERU - "After you."
You - "Thank you!"
HiMERU - "It's only natural".
-- Location: Reimei Academy area street --
You see Hiyori's luxurious car arriving in the distance.
HiMERU - "By the way. HiMERU believes you haven't told him your name yet. May HiMERU know what is it?"
Hiyori's car stops right in front of you.
You - "Oh, it's 'Y/N'."
HiMERU - "《Y/N》... Well, it was nice meeting you Y/N-san", he tells you with a soft smile. "
You - "Likewise, HiMERU-san," you tell him, returning him a smile.
HiMERU - "Oh and here is your umbrella, HiMERU doesn't need it anymore."
While giving it back to you, your hands touch. It reminds you both of HiMERU's act earlier; you two back up, flustered.
The chauffeur gets out of the car and opens the door that is in front of you.
You - "Have a nice evening, HiMERU-san," you tell him while getting in the car. "I hope we will meet again."

You - "Were you working on a new Eve song or an Eden one?"
Jun - "It's a secret haha."

Jun - "But don't ya worry, once it's out, you'll be the first one to know!"
You - "Can't wait to listen to it!"
Hiyori - "So in the meantime, have you made a decision regarding the school you will enroll in?"
You - "Not yet. But I learned that Shuuetsu has more varied course options, so I'll visit tomorrow to make a final decision."
The car stops.
Hiyori - "I see~ Well it seems we've arrived at our destination. Let's continue our discussion inside."

The three of you sit down in the restaurant. Besides one or two other clients, it seems like you guys are the only ones here.
You - "Isn't this one of the restaurants that are operated by your family’s corporation, Hiyori-senpai? I think this is where you took Trickstar and me last time."
Hiyori - "You are correct. ♫"
Jun - "Please don't call her your little pig again, Ohii-san."
Tumblr media
Hiyori - "Come on Jun-kun☆, I told you last time that the nicknames I give are part of my many charms," he replies playfully.
What a nostalgic sight.
A waitress takes your orders at your table and leaves for the kitchen.
Hiyori - "So, Y/N-chan, if you join Shuuetsu, I was thinking on how Ibara-kun would act towards you..."
... Oh yeah. You forgot about him. Knowing Ibara's personality, he will either mess with you with his "conquer!" persona or he will get along with you as his real (?) self. It is like playing Russian roulette when dealing with him, you never know what is in the back of his mind.
Hiyori - "I decided to give him my trust him as a fellow member of Eden. But, since this time the issue isn't within our unit, we should not tell him about your plans, at least not for the moment."
You & Jun - "Agreed."
Jun - "Also, Y/N, who was that man with you earlier when we came to pick you up?"
Hiyori - "Hm? There was someone with her earlier?"
Jun - "Yea but you couldn't see him from your angle, and I could only catch a glimpse of him from afar. He was a Special Student from Reimei, judging by his uniform."
You - "Oh, that was HiMERU-san! I met him today, we chatted a bit together during the storm."
Both of the boys look at each other.
Tumblr media
Hiyori & Jun - "You said 'HiMERU'?"
They pause for a moment.
Hiyori - "First you-know-who and now HiMERU?"
Jun - "... Woah I need a second to process that."
'What are they making such a fuss about?', you wonder.
Jun - "Actually, I feel very happy to hear that. Both of them were in pretty messed up states y'know? I don't really believe in God but this might be a miracle," he tries to whisper to Hiyori.
Hiyori - "It is in those moments that Ibara-kun would rejoice about making new strategies," he whispers back.
Jun - "Bold of you to assume he doesn't already know, Ohii-san."
The waitress comes back with a plate and serves you your meals and drinks.
Hiyori - "Let us toast to a new page then!", he says as he lifts his glass.
The two of you join him.
You & Jun - "To a new page!"

HiMERU first appearance woohoo!! Longer chapter to honor that! Can I get a A for effort (the game edits)
Also, I'll try to keep the MC as neutral as possible so that you can always relate to her :) From friend groups at Yumenosaki, physical traits, personality, etc...
(She won't be an Anzu v2 who never talks ofc.)
The canon CosPro timeline is so complex but I'll try to follow it as much as possible!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
She desperately wanted to tell him about the letter, and as a result of the internal debate, she brought it up with Jisung. The earlier established relaxed air was out like a candle, as a more serious tone slowly sunk in. Jisung didn’t say anything for a long time, which left her feeling rather uncomfortable—she wasn’t sure whether he had been angry at her or angry in general at the progress of things.
Fortunately, Jisung saved her the trouble by speaking up, asking her whether she had actually submitted the concern request, or complaint, as she sheepishly replied with a shake of her head. Although Jisung had told her before to go through with filing the complaint, she didn’t actually have a lot of time, being the first week of the school semester and all. She did tell him that she would go through with it the next day—she only had one class the next day, which meant she could easily hop on to the administration offices to file the complaint.
Jisung seemed pretty content with that but had her tell him what went on so that he could stop worrying. And she was inclined to do so, as she really felt like her entire stalker ordeal had made Jisung grow grey hairs or something.
Jisung left after a while, and even though she suggested that she should at least walk him out to where the gate was, he told her that he would be fine, and would text her when he had made it home. She nodded and watched him disappear into the sunset through her window while waving absentmindedly in his direction.
But what caught her eye was the little glimmer—she didn’t know what it was, but it was unsettling, and so she closed off her curtain swiftly, opting to look out to the open through a crack through her blinds.
What was that?
Although she felt unsettled by whatever it was out there, her mind raced and thought of Jisung, who was out there, alone. She quickly sent a text to him, asking him to be careful, and he replied back with, “you’re telling me?”
In the next few seconds, another incoming text from Jisung showed up, which read, “ok, I will be careful.”
She breathed a sigh of relief, before sending an outgoing text to him, saying, “remember to text me when you get home!!” And was given a brief response of, “got it.”
Perhaps that eased her heart a little bit. But then again, something Jisung said made her question herself—why would she be telling him about that when she was the one being bombarded with gifts? Surely, the creepy stalker wouldn’t threaten her friends and family, would they…?
She shook her head. The uneasiness that resulted from that inconclusive deduction made her feel as though she should be on her guard, especially with her friends, but…she really needed to stop watching horror and mystery films. It was going to give her a bad case of overthinking and insomnia if she kept on going with thining too much.
She opted for some quiet studying time, and after an hour or two of productive reading, she turned off her lights and headed to bed.
Sometime in the night, the glimmer went away, presumably packed away…
>>>>>
She did end up filing the complaint after her class of the day. It didn’t take her long to make it to the administration’s office, despite being on the other side of the campus. The lady at the counter gave her a strange look, although not entirely skeptical, but more of a worried glance than anything.
She seemed content about her situation, as she handed the slip of paper off to the desk lady, who told her that the complaint would find its way to the security office. She thanked the lady, and walked off, feeling proud of herself.
Finally.
However, when the security officer got in late afternoon, the mountains of papers and previous complaints and piled up so tremendously that her complaint simply got lost in the pile. It was as though the report had never been filed in the first place, and as it got caught with some useless papers on the desk, it was tossed into the shredder without a second thought.
And with that, yn’s attempt to save herself was thwarted by the actions of a careless and overworked security officer.
The day after, she had gotten ready to attend her criminology tutorial, she met Hyunjin standing outside the classroom. She greeted him with a small wave and was given one in return as they briefly exchanged pleasantries before the doors of the class opened, revealing the teaching assistant standing by the doorframe.
She, along with Hyunjin and a bunch of other students waiting outside quickly made their way into the class, where they all found themselves a seat and settled down. She ended up sitting next to Hyunjin, who then looked over at her, and smiled.
“He seems like a pretty friendly guy,” the raven-haired boy whispered, and she giggled in return.
“I hope so,” she whispered back.
Seemed like the teaching assistant had caught a glimpse of their exchange, and smiled confidently at the small group of student.
“Seems like some of you know each other…” He began, although his smile had been upgraded into a small chuckle.
What caught them off guard was the fact that a guy who looked like he was merely in his mid-twenties had the voice of a guy who was in his…40s? Maybe Hyunjin’s initial assumptions of the guy weren’t accurate after all. But the teaching assistant seemed pretty laid back in the way he talked, so…
“I’ll introduce myself first—I’m Felix Lee,” the teaching assistant said. “And I will be your TA for the criminology course tutorial. I have a master’s degree on the subject, and working towards getting my Ph.D., which centers around the psychology of victimhood in criminology.”
He paused, and then started off again, saying, “I know it may be a mouthful, but I assure you that it will get easier once you get into it. My field is the act of victimization of the victim in a crime.”
He received collective “oh” from the class.
Felix laughed and got on with the class. He discussed the material that was covered during the lecture and did an in-depth analysis for those who were still unsure of what was going on. Of course, people still had some issues with certain terminologies, but Felix was able to comb through the confusion with some everyday examples, bringing the class to the same page.
“Don’t forget to review materials beforehand so you’ll be prepared with the questions that you may have regarding the topic of the week,” Felix told them. "If that’s all for today, then you’re free to go—don’t forget that you’re all free to send me an email should you have any problems!"
There was a collective “ok” before they all shuffled their way out the door.
Hyunjin looked back at her, as she grabbed her bag and made her way to the exit. “You have any more classes after this?”
She shook her head. “You?”
He shrugged. “I have a three-hour break before my next tutorial.”
“Oh, that’s cool—what is it for?”
He thought about it, and then responded with, “I think some liberal arts course.”
She laughed. “You don’t know?”
He shrugged again. “It was an elective, they chose it for me, I think. I just got shoved in some random class that was required for my program. The other courses that you must take in order to graduate? I still need some liberal arts credit this year.”
She nodded. “Right, right. I think I have to do that for next year, it’s kind of bad for me to have to push everything to the last minute, huh.”
Hyunjin laughed. “Hopefully not all the time…”
She shook her hands. “No, I’m usually not like this…I’ve been mostly on top of things, although course selection doesn’t always work in your favour, and there is some overlap which causes some problem.”
Hyunjin nodded. “Yeah, I had a problem like that last year, which is why I was saddled with this liberal arts course this year—anyway, do you want to visit the small cafe that just opened near campus?”
She looked excited at the idea. “Yes! That sounds like a good idea!”
The pair made their way to the newly opened cafe, and spread their course material on top of the little table they were sitting at and studied together for a little bit until the conversation veered mostly off course. After talking about courses, they talked about ambitions, future jobs, as well as hobbies.
The conversation lasted a whole two hours—it didn’t really feel all too long. She found out through the exchange more about his parents, his background. When it came to his hobbies, he didn’t elaborate very much, just that he enjoyed reading sometimes, movies, and certainly other everyday hobbies that people tend to have.
What confused her, though, was the fact that he never really branched further regarding those details, merely just ‘I like this,’ or ‘I like that,’ and it threw her a little off. Perhaps he didn’t feel too comfortable sharing so much with her, but then again, it wasn’t really her place to say anything or comment. Instead, she talked about her own hobbies, entertainment preferences, and he listened, rather content with just listening to her talk.
After she went home for the day, and hopped on her couch, intending to relax, she received a text message. She hoped that it would be from Jisung or Sooji, but it was from Hyunjin, who said that he enjoyed their time at the cafe, and looked forward to their next interaction.
Although he didn’t put it like that, exactly. It was more like, “I had fun today, let’s do this again.”
It seemed a lot like the conversation two people on a date would have…
…no no no no. That was embarrassing. She swore she could feel her cheeks heat up, what an awkward thought, seriously.
Furthermore, her stalker seemed rather silent—this meant that she could focus on her work, hopefully. And for the next two months, it stayed like that until she received a text message one evening that made her feel truly unsafe.
It was an image of her—rather, a series of images of her—as they flooded her messages. Each picture was taken in a span of a few days, as it was evident with the clothes she wore, and which path she took to campus. Sometimes she considered herself lucky to live relatively close to the school, but this might not work to her advantage this time around.
She only scrolled through maybe 15 of them when she started seeing other people in the pictures, and most of the pictures that weren’t of her alone were her with Jisung. There were a few with Hyunjin in them, and one with Sooji.
This meant that he followed her. He knew where she lived. He knew which path she took to the university campus. Who she associated herself with, who her friends were.
And if she thought these were bad enough, the pictures she was set later on were even more disturbing. Maybe the creepy stalker had enough smarts to not be identified, but a gloved hand was seen in the ones that were seen later on. She guessed that maybe the hand belonged to her stalker, as they were position in very threatening ways.
When the images finally flooding her phone, she was sent one message:
“Why do you always spend time with them, why, why…I wish I could get rid of them so you’ll only see me…wouldn’t that be nice, yn? If we were the only people left in the world—you would have no one else to hold on to...”
This was the first time her name was actually mentioned in any exchange she had with him. The first one. And somehow, it felt even more personal than before. It was a rude awakening that this had become something far more than she could ever handle.
But she honestly did not know what to do, what else could she do? Create a fortress out of her home? What if her stalker knew how to pick locks? Or even knew how to do things without leaving a shred of evidence?
She thought of calling Jisung but stopped herself before she could dial the numbers. That might cause more trouble...after all, wasn’t her stalker threatening her…?
What on earth did he want…?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
My life got the better of me again, as I’m kinda dealing with some personal issues. I swear to make it up by posting some all the character’s backstories, histories, as well as other things. I also ended up in a rabbit hole of research materials...not a criminology major, so I had to do some extra research for that...as well as future research for other things...I’m basing the course structure on some of the syllabi I was able to find online, taking it mostly from Waterloo U’s criminology intro course...
I am going to be picking up the pace a little after this, as the following chapters will be advancing a much faster rate...I think I got too caught up with the details and I need to stop doing that to myself. I’m also veering off course with my original plot, but I think I need to make some small changes in terms of how things happen and give myself a motivation to write chaptered stories...
If things aren’t consistent...I’m not used to writing chaptered stories...I blame myself for not writing out a clear character profile...

M13U1A1 Globalization and Education
INTRO
There was a phrase that my middle-school self promised to never utter, “I am a middle-school teacher.” Well, I am a middle school teacher and have been for the last four years. The school I work at, Pride Prep, was founded under a vision of project and action based learning with an emphasis on relationship based teaching. It was understood that we would not unionize because the school would take care of us. Though we would be required by state law to participate in standardized tests, as an organization we would not pay attention to the results. There we stood, a public charter school, free from the restraints of the system, able to focus only on the well being of the students.
Given my background in construction, graphic design, and CNC operation I been hired run the school’s maker-space. However, the school was short on math teacher, so instead of helping kids build projects I found myself in the classroom teaching math. I had no formal mathematics background, had never taught before so I didn’t know enough to know better. I tailored my curriculum around my construction, design, and business background.  The students built board games, chairs, and copper art pieces. Each build was a different iteration of scaling, fractions/decimals, perimeter/area, addition, subtraction, multiplication, unit rate and so on. The students would then cost and price the products for resale so that we could use the profit to buy new supplies. For me it was a blur of a year; a trial by fire of classroom management. For the kids it was an illumination of the power of math as a real world tool.
TESTING
As a public school we where required to participate in state testing. We went in with our chins up, knowing the growth our student’s had made, hopeful that we would score on par with other public schools in our district. Our CEO (also acting as principal) reassured us that the test scores did not matter but when the test scores came out changes started happening in the school. We had performed on par with schools of similar demographics but it turned out the public scrutiny of the tests had more sway than was originally anticipated (see https://create.piktochart.com/output/20093013-u2m3a1-sps-and-pride-prep).  As was discussed in Minori Nagahra’s (2011, p.375) review of Globalizing Education Policy, our school was about to start, “implement[ing] policies set elsewhere and have [our] school achieve according to various league tables of performance indicators.”
The following year, in response to the test score, we created our schedule around the needs of the math department on the premise that math is very linear and sequential and requires a solid foundation of concepts before progressing. The problem with this was the unintentional ‘tracking’ of students in other classes. Tracking, or the leveling of students based on demonstrated abilities, is a very controversial topic. Research has shown that tracking sets the stage for a student’s self expectations such that when they are in what is perceived to be a ‘dumb’ class they have a very hard time breaking the mold. While students in mixed level classes have a much easier time stepping up to greater challenges. In addition, “Data shows minority and low-income students are few and far between in high level and Advanced Placement courses,” (Brindley, 2015, p.4). Our admin was aware of the problems with tracking and has since done their best to juggle students schedules so that they can have a leveled math class while maintaining mixed abilities in other disciplines.
This year, however, I was not on the math team. I had signed up for my teacher certificate training with Teach Now and was on track to becoming a science teacher. As such I was given a science class and joined up with the science team to develop curriculum. In silent response to the test scores we aligned the curriculum with The Next Generation Science Standards. We used them to develop projects that ensured students had exposure to a more mainstream science curriculum. The past year science was run as an inquiry based workshop where students led their lines of inquiry based on their areas of interest. The core standards were addressed by means of the online platform Summit PLP.
As a result of the curriculum change, science projects became more like simulations than actual inquiries. We incorporated more practice and rote skill building into class time without a solid demonstration of the need for the skills. This diminished engagement thus begged the question of how do we keep up engagement while also giving students the tools they need to do well on a standardized test. We answered this question by incorporating design into the science curriculum. If we where studying keystone species we would have the students do a deep dive into one species, make a custom t-shirt and then sell them at venues to make money to be donated to conservation and preservation organizations. We also made backstories for the different experiments and workshops we did so the students had a colorful notion of why they where doing what they where doing. This payed off as our test scores in science where 74% passing while the state average was 63%.
RIGOR, CITICENSHIP & CAPITOL
The increase in test scores was not enough for our parents. There was a large cry out for more rigor in our school. The implementation of design in science and the remnants of inquiry based learning gave the parents the impression that we more of an arts and crafts school than an academic institution. Some wanted more ditto work others wanted more instruction. And while the school was founded on internationalist principles as defined in the article, Internationalism and Globalization as a Context for International Education, We would need to take on more of a globalist (as defined in the same article) approach to making our school a more desirable, thus competitive, institution (Cambridge & Thompson, 2004, p.164). A school school needs money to operate. Our first two years we had money from Bill Gates to fall back on but we made a choice as an institution to not use it unless we had no other options. Gates is an avid supporter of charter schools and even though ours is a public charter school, it is a step in the direction of public money for private charter schools. Our school was not founded on the neoliberal idea that schools should be part of a Laze Faire, free market (Nagahra, 2011, p.373). Instead it was conceived of as a dynamic institution that could defy union norms in the interest of a rich education. We hoped to be a school that students wanted to be at because we where doing the right things.
The parents, however, had a hard time swallowing such an optimistic pill.  Naturally they wanted their kids to go out into the world and be successful and more often than not this involved attending college.  Even though we where using a vetted program to ensure students where getting their required standards, Summit PLP, we had to respond to the call. Since we are a public school we are allocated dollars by the number of students we have. If the numbers go down the budget goes down. If the budget goes down we loose the resources to implement great projects. If we loose the great projects we loose more students. Eventually we loose the school.
As a response to the call, our CEO decided to begin the acceptance process into the International Baccalaureate  program. This would lend credibility to our program and give us a framework to steer our projects. There are ivy league schools on the east coast that look at students with IB diplomas as their first draft (J. Ewan, personal communication, 2014)*. And what a way to level the playing field. Our school has around 50% free and reduced lunch. And students come from all walks of life. The only other school in our city to offer IB is a private school that charges over $30,000 a year in tuition and recruits wealthy students from china as a staple source of income. This does make the school more international but it also perpetuates the schism between the haves and have nots.
Ans so it was, for the next two years we steeped ourselves in ATL’s, Global Contexts, and Statements of Inquiry. We tried very hard to balance the rigorous academic expectations of IB, with the original project based philosophies of our school. When things became too academic parents again stepped up with complaints. Only this time the complaints where that the school had lost its focus on project based learning. The drive to compete to be an institution that creates college candidates had overridden the desire to make well rounded, experienced, and thoughtful citizens capable of solving alien problems. On the down side we finished last year, our fourth year, with a higher than average attrition rate. We lost teachers mid year because they could not handle the pressure of balancing the IB with meeting the social emotional needs of kids from all walks of life. However, we are a resilient and dynamic (sometimes too dynamic) institution. And while we never will find a perfect solution to balance out the requirements of a free market competitive system with that of creating global citizens and stewards, we will continue to work creatively within the parameters we are given to maintain the first with the true aim of creating the latter.

Agriculture – exciting opportunities on the horizon of a developing country
India is a country with agriculture as the mainstay for most of its population. As enumerated by many leaders and our first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, our nation can wait for everything else but agricultural development. Till a few years ago, agriculture was extensive in nature, practiced only for the grower’s and his or her family’s subsistence. But now things are changing. Agriculture is transforming into the intensive type, with the help of advanced technology, science, etc. This shift is creating numerous job opportunities that could be immensely rewarding for a student taking it up as a career.
Contrary to common belief, agriculture is not only about farming. It involves various other dimensions like livestock farming, horticulture, pisciculture, dairy farming, agricultural biotechnology, etc. Cutting edge research and continuous innovation are required for sustainably commercializing agriculture in India. Therefore, students today are becoming more and more interested in pursuing a career in the field.
The Faculty of Agriculture at Invertis University is focused on imparting education and skills that aim to assist students in this dynamic scenario. Our courses lay thrust on scientific research in agriculture, government policy analysis, assistance, and incorporation of Information Technology in agriculture, etc. Our advanced labs, e-classrooms, experienced faculty, etc. make the job easier.
