I'm taking over management of a public informational web map for a small local government. The guy who created it over a decade ago was good with the science/analytical side of GIS but was by his own admission not great a creating an easy-to-read map. I mean, you click on something and the popup label will read "wm_NP3: JXY209". So we're going over the map, I'm talking about some of the changes I'll be able to make like more obvious labels, and he says "oh, don't do that for everything."
"Why not?"
"Some of that's critical infrastructure, we don't actually want all that information public."
His security system was to leave the default labeling for everything and hope that the sensitive information was confusing enough that only the people who needed it for legitimate purposes would be able to figure it out.

Oh, and when I asked if he kept any metadata that might help me understand his files and labels, he basically responded with, "What's metadata?"
Anyway I will be crying in the corner as I try to decipher the data for dozens of mapping files and track down where they came from. I already found out one of our (intentionally public) data layers was last designed and updated on Windows XP so um. Wish me luck.

No idea if this person follows me BUT while the industry standard for GIS software (ArcGIS pro) is incredibly expensive, there are open source alternatives like QGIS. A lot of governments and organizations also have open data portals that you can grab data from (shapefiles, CSVs, rasters, whatever).
I've kind of been taught ground-up in person so I don't have recommendations on video tutorials for teaching basic concepts sadly. Bolstadt GIS fundamentals is good and was dirt cheap by textbook standards though (was like $40 iirc).
"Learning GIS" I guess also depends on what you want to do with it? If you want to mess around with cartography and data visualization you could probably just give yourself some pet projects.
#of course i would never. never pirate a textbook. cough.#i like highlighting while reading though so im happy i bought a physical copy of that one specifically#iirc open source GIS software also requires you to lean on SQL and python a little more. though i could be wrong#not art

So the "down" arrow hasn't worked on my computer since September, but I've been too busy to be able to spare my computer for several days while being fixed, so I've just been working around it. Until this morning, when I discovered that the program that I now need to use for my research (....because the old version of it relies on a program that's been discontinued) requires that I scroll through options with the arrow keys, and I can't just scroll up and loop around. Which... is lovely.
My advisor's solution, while I'm trying to find a place that will do a fast repair: connect an extra keyboard to my laptop. Pretty sure I can hear my remote sensing prof (who has already criticized my laptop for being old, my external hard drive for being outdated and slow technology, and my mouse for randomly turning off) screaming in the distance.
#personal#grad school#apparently the GIS branch of geology is very into new and cutting-edge tech#and does not often run into Biology (and particularly Ecology) people#there are computers in the lab that still run on windows XP because the software that goes with the hardware needs it#one computer that has a DO NOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET sign on it because if it updates someone is screwed#like my five-year-old computer is nothing there's 15-year-old computers still being used

What is Portfolio Management?
Portfolio management is the strategic process of overseeing multiple projects, programs or investments to align with an organization's goals and maximize value. It involves selecting, prioritizing and managing these initiatives to ensure resources are utilized efficiently and objectives are met.
The Key Components of Portfolio Management
Portfolio management focuses on balancing an organization’s resources, risks and returns. It begins with identifying and evaluating all potential projects or investments to determine their feasibility and alignment with strategic objectives.
For instance, in industries like construction or utilities, field service project management often plays a significant role in a portfolio. Each project’s timeline, budget and deliverables are assessed within the broader context of the organization’s goals. A portfolio manager ensures that resources are distributed optimally, risks are mitigated and all projects contribute to overall success.
Monitoring and reviewing the portfolio regularly is another crucial component. This helps in identifying underperforming initiatives and reallocating resources to higher-priority tasks.
Benefits of Portfolio Management
Portfolio management provides a structured approach to decision-making, ensuring that every initiative aligns with long-term objectives. By focusing on the bigger picture, organizations can achieve better resource allocation, improved risk management and increased profitability.
For businesses involved in field service project management, portfolio management ensures seamless coordination across various projects. It minimizes overlaps, identifies potential bottlenecks and enhances communication between teams. This leads to higher efficiency and successful project execution.
Conclusion
Portfolio management is a vital strategy for organizations aiming to optimize their resources and achieve long-term success. It helps businesses make informed decisions, balance risks and ensure all initiatives contribute to overall goals. In the context of field service project management, portfolio management ensures projects are executed efficiently and deliver maximum value.
By adopting a portfolio management approach, organizations can streamline their operations, improve financial performance and gain a competitive edge in their industry.
