For over two years now, workers have been occupying the GKN autoparts factory in Florence to stop it from closing, in the longest factory occupation in Italian history.

They have received huge support in demonstrations of up to 40,000 people - and crucially, from the climate movement, which inspired the workers to come up with an alternative plan of production. Instead of autoparts, they plan to produce cargo bikes and solar panels, and use them to build a local economy based on the needs of people.

Now they urgently need your help to make this "just transition" away from fossil fuels a reality. The bosses are planning on sacking all the workers on January 1st so the first priority is to come to a New Years Eve event at the factory if you can, for a huge concert - and to barricade the factory. They've fought off redundancies before; with the same support, they can do it again.

But then they need to raise one million euros in a popular shareholder campaign, to start production off the cargo bikes and solar panels under workers control. So please share this video call out with trade unions, with environmental organisations, with everyone who wants to see a global just transition away from fossil fuels. Thumper (1981) by Dave Woodfield, GKN Technology, Wolverhampton, UK. Preliminary trials for the 1981 Micromouse competition were held in Paris (May 81) and at the 'Online Exhibition' in Wembley, London (July 1981). The finals were held at Euromicro Symposium in Paris in September 1981. "The winning ‘mouse’ was Thumper which was entered by a group of three people from GKN Technology; its handler at the competition was Dave Woodfield. They won the first prize of a Sharp MZ80K computer donated by Newbear Computing Store. It succeeded in traversing the maze four times in the 15 minutes allowed, with each traversal having a faster time as the ‘mouse’ learnt the maze and found the shortest route. The four times were: 2 mins 24 secs; 2 mins 21 secs; 49 secs; 47 secs. Thumper was designed around an 8085 processor, the positioning and sensory system used photocells to sense the top of a maze wall — the success of this technique relied on heavy screening from ambient light. A single drive motor was used for locomotion via an ingenious system of pulleys, a second motor was used to drive a retractable turntable foot which was used to rotate the device. A unique and endearing feature of Thumper was the inclusion of a speech synthesiser which gave the robot a voice output. This was imaginatively used to provide diagnostics and as a psychological warfare device to intimidate other entrants. The speech synthesiser used was a Votrax single chip phoneme synthesiser." – Micromouse by Nick Hampshire, Practical Computing, October 1981.
