In exciting personal life news, I recently downloaded a step tracker rewards app with GPS, and I've been using it discover safe (sidewalk-enabled) walkable routes to a number of places. Yesterday I found out my credit union is just 4,000 steps away (about 40 minutes if I walk very slowly) and I also found that a separate walking trail I enjoy but have had to drive to in the past connects to my neighborhood!

To get from one side of the U.S. to the other is to criss-cross a veritable snakes and ladders of state and county-level legislation and policy. If you’re after a particular title by Toni Morrison or Margaret Atwood, you might find that it’s available in Georgia, and effectively banned next door in Florida. A new initiative from the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), launched in concert with the Palace Project, hopes to toss a ladder to people living in places where access is restricted.
The Banned Book Club is a free e-reader app that uses GPS-enabled geotargeting to determine which books are not available in a given area, and upload them to a library. To transcend petty local politics, simply download The Palace app, then select “Banned Books Club” as your “local library.” You will then be able to access all the goodies that someone else has “challenged.”
Executive Director of the DPLA, John Bracken, said in a statement that “book bans are one of the greatest threats to our freedom.” Thus, your local library doing what it can to remedy your rights.
They can’t wrap every state in tin foil, can they!
The project was announced on July 20th, and is doing its work as I type.

The drops are all listed worldwide but unfortunately you have to click into them to see specifically where each one is but if you're spoofing your location it doesn't matter which you pick

When you open it it will then tell you how far that drop is from you and give you the option to open in Google or apple maps, open it, this gives you the exact location of that drop, then go to your GPS spoofing app.
Android folks will likely need to enable developer access for this, to do that go to your phones settings, then about, then look for this phones build version, I think mine was called like a miui version, and you tap on either the build number or the build name 5 or more times and it should then tell you that you're now a developer.

you can then go to your developer options and look for a GPS or locations sectioned with an entry named something like 'select mock GPS app' or similar, select the GPS spoofer you installed.

Go back to your spoofer app and drop the pin near where the drop is

Check the drop site again.

In this case I dropped the pin near where the movie theatre was but the actual location of this GPS drop is slightly further down the street, if this happens, keep adjusting your GPS spoofer until you're in the area of effect for the drop.

Apologies to any apple users, I dont have an iPhone to take screenshots but you go to your settings > privacy & security > developed mode and I think the rest of the steps should be similar.
Hope that helps any of you who are either too far away from a drop, or who are in range but the site keeps giving you errors and saying no drops found.

welp, I sure am glad FISH FLASH IS NOW AVAILABLE ON STEAM, because it seems it's about to be deleted from the Google Play store come February :( Google Play is requiring I display sensitive personal info on my developer profile if I want to keep selling apps there, and as a child of 90's internet safety etiquette I simply will not. The latest mobile version of FF isn't ready anyway, but I'll make Fish Flash v7 (the version currently available on Google Play) available on itch for those of you who know how to install APK files that aren't from the store. It's not a hard thing to do, but it requires you enable apps from "unknown sources" in your settings, which I understand some people might not be comfortable with.
If some people do install it from itch though, that might actually inspire me to make more mobile apps. The biggest pain in the ass about developing for mobile has been meeting/maintaining GP store requirements, which often sends me on a maddening hours-long quest to figure out what the hell they're even requesting. The Routes, Places, and Maps features are expanded and improved by the 17 new and improved APIs that Amazon Location Service announced today, giving developers a more unified and efficient experience. These improvements increase the accessibility and utility of Amazon Location Service for a variety of applications by bringing new capabilities and providing a smooth migration process.
Advanced route optimization, GPS tracing, toll cost calculations, a range of map styles with static and dynamic rendering options, proximity-based search, predictive recommendations, and rich, detailed information on points of interest are all now available.
At Amazon, user feedback informs the great majority of its roadmaps. When working with location-based data, several customers developing applications with Amazon Location Service have expressed that they require more specific information, like contact details and business hours, as well as specially designed APIs. Developers have indicated a desire for further features, like comprehensive route planning, proximity-based searches, more place details, and static map graphics, even if the present API set has given many users useful tools. These needs are met by these new APIs, which offer a more thorough and unconventional location solution.
Improved and new capabilities
In direct response to your feedback, today’s launch provides seven completely new APIs and ten revised APIs. Specific improvements are made to each service Maps, Places, and Routes to accommodate a wider variety of use cases.

SnapToRoads allows GPS traces to be precisely matched by snapping sites to the road network.
You may create more dynamic and accurate route experiences for your consumers with these features. For instance, a logistics firm may minimize delivery travel expenses by optimizing driver routes in real-time while accounting for real-time traffic.
Maps
More specially designed map types created by talented cartographers are now available in the revised Amazon Location Maps API. These map styles provide expert designs that remove the need for custom map construction and speed up time to market. Furthermore, developers can incorporate static maps into applications using the Static Map Image feature, which eliminates the requirement for constant data streaming and boosts performance in use scenarios when interactivity is not required.
Among the Maps API’s primary features are:
GetStyleDescriptor, which returns details about the style; GetTile, which downloads a tile from a tileset with a given X, Y, and Z axis values
GetStaticMap allows non-interactive maps to be rendered for reporting or display.
Places
In response to requests for more granularity in location data, the Amazon Location Places API has been improved to enable more thorough search capabilities. Among the new capabilities are:
For improved user experiences, SearchNearby and Autocomplete allow predictive text features and support proximity-based queries.
Improved company information including sections for contact details, business hours, and extra features for sites of interest
Applications like food delivery services or shop apps, where customers require comprehensive information about nearby locations, will particularly benefit from these functionalities. Consider a scenario in which a consumer launches a food delivery app, uses SearchNearby to find restaurants in their area, and downloads restaurant information, including contact details and business hours, to verify availability. The application utilizes OptimizeWaypoints to recommend the most effective route for pickups and deliveries after a driver has been assigned several delivery orders. SnaptoRoads improves the customer’s real-time tracking experience by providing a detailed depiction of the driver’s location as they follow the route.
The operation of enhanced location service
It is simple to call the API. You have three options: the basic REST API, one of AWS SDKs, or the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI). However, some further preparation is needed to display the data on a map in a web or mobile application. Despite having extensive documentation, the method is too intricate to go into detail here.
There are two methods for authenticating API requests with Amazon Location Service: using API keys or AWS API authentication (AWS Sigv4 authentication). For developers of mobile applications, API keys may be more practical in situations where end users are not verified or when integrating with Amazon Cognito is not practical. For front-end apps, this is the suggested authentication technique.
You utilize a combination of the AWS CLI, cURL, and a graphical REST API client to show the flexibility of the APIs and how simple it is to integrate them inside your apps.

the so-called 'triple lock plus' or 'quadruple lock': the triple lock legally mandates three possible minima for the state pension, depending on which is highest. it's currently below the tax-free personal allowance, but it is forecast to go above the current personal allowance at some point, which would mean pensioners would start paying tax on the income above the allowance. the tories have made a huge song and dance about raising the personal allowance for pensioners in line with the triple lock. George W Bush 'Mission Accomplished' energy. they're trying to present 'removing' this weird and unhelpful discrepancy as a 'tax cut', even though it is currently not a 'tax' and would be easily rectified by any incumbent government facing this situation by just raising the allowance, because all pensioners would cause a hell of a storm were the government to forget to solve the discrepancy. and it totally ignores any possibility of the personal allowance being raised anyway

Why Apple's 2nd Gen UWB Chip is Exciting?
With over 10 years of experience in spatial and location technologies, including Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband, and Cellular IoT, we at Estimote are thrilled about the newly announced iPhone 15 and its upgraded second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.
In this blog post, we'll explain why we're excited, we will try to forecast the potential use-cases of this second-gen chip, and highlight the opportunities for developers to create groundbreaking context and location-aware apps.
SPATIAL AWARENESS
Many people aren't aware, but every iPhone from the iPhone 11 onwards has a hidden super-power. It can measure the distance and orientation to nearby phones or other compatible devices. Think of it as an invisible string connecting your phone to objects with AirTags attached, a HomePod, or even your car.

This super-power is made possible by the first generation Ultra Wideband chip (U1 chip). This chip is a small radio transmitter that sends, receives, and processes tiny radio signals. These signals are so low-power that they're almost indistinguishable from the background noise in a broad range of frequencies (5-9 GHz). That's why it's called Ultra Wideband, or UWB for short.
Whenever a nearby device communicates with an iPhone using UWB, the phone calculates the duration of this interaction. The greater the distance, the more time it takes for the radio signal to make the round trip. The U1 chip then multiplies this travel time by the speed of light to determine the inch-level distance to nearby phones or tags.
iPhones equipped with the UWB chip use this distance data to create magical user experiences. For instance, when you AirDrop files to friends close by or search for your misplaced keys, your iPhone directs you to the corresponding AirTag. And when you walk into your living room your music can seamlessly start playing on your HomePod. These are just a few examples of what the U1 chip offers, and there's so much more on the horizon.
LOWER POWER UWB CHIP
The new iPhone 15 as well as new Apple Watch Series 9 feature a second-generation UWB chip. Reports indicate that a primary difference with that model is the shift in the chip manufacturing process from 16nm to 7nm. This simply means that the transistors have become smaller. As a result, they use less energy and switch more quickly, leading to enhanced performance, greater range, and new possibilities.
Why is power consumption so crucial? Reduced power usage can result in a superior user experience and introduce entirely new use-cases and applications. For instance, with the new UWB chip, new AirTags when upgraded could last up to 2-3 years on a single coin battery, as opposed to the current 1-year lifespan with the U1 chip.
Having more transistors also means stronger computing power, better signal processing, and more effective noise filtering. This is why Apple also announced a 3x improvement in UWB range and unveiled a new precision finding feature for the Find My app to locate friends around.
UNTRACKED INDOOR LOCATION
Another potential future application of the lower power UWB chip might involve a technique named Downlink TDoA. This stands for "time difference of arrival," a new standard championed by the FiRa organization. It lets UWB-enabled phones passively receive signals from UWB beacons or anchors.
Imagine your car in a tunnel where GPS is unavailable. UWB beacons in the tunnel transmit radio signals to your phone. Your phone captures these signals, and using the time difference of their arrival, it can calculate the exact position of the car inside the tunnel. With Downlink TDoA, beacons don't collect any data from to the phone. The precise location is determined solely by the UWB chip on the phone. This approach is seen as safer and more privacy-centric than traditional real-time location systems (RTLS). As a result, it's often referred to as Untracked Indoor Positioning.
This innovative, privacy-centric way of determining indoor positioning could also be applied in airports, malls, museums, and more. It could effectively deliver what the iBeacon promised years ago, but with inch-perfect accuracy and superior security.
To make such experiences possible, a low-power UWB processor like the second-gen chip is essential. The phone would need to constantly detect UWB signals from nearby beacons, and it's crucial that this happens efficiently.
SPATIAL COMPUTING AND VISION PRO
There's also speculation that the UWB chip may eventually interact with Apple's new smart glasses. This makes a lot of sense. Currently, Vision Pro determines its spatial orientation in a room using computer vision and image processing. Using the UWB chip and radio signals for this purpose would use order of magnitude less power. Preserving power could allow Apple to design more compact and lighter smart glasses in the future.
FUTURE APPLICATIONS OF UWB
Ultra Wideband technology has many more uses than just distance positioning. It was originally developed for military use in radars. Essentially, UWB signals sent from the phone could reflect off nearby objects and return to the UWB chip. By examining these reflections phone can identify the shape, orientation, or movement of objects.
RADAR AND HEALTH MONITORING
There are many research papers where UWB radar is used to count people in a room or even detect human heartbeats. Given Apple's focus on health & fitness, it's entirely possible for future iPhones equipped with UWB on your nightstand to monitor heart rate or breathing. Non-contact monitoring could be useful for elderly individuals living alone or young children. It could identify falls or irregular heartbeats and notify caregivers or family members. This might not be implemented on the second-gen processors, but could be expected from the future UWB revisions and the new software.
HANDS-FREE PAYMENTS
Another potential use for an improved UWB chip could be in payments. While NFC has been popular for close-range payments, UWB could transform the entire experience. Imagine approaching a payment terminal, and without needing to pull out your phone or move it near the terminal, the payment is processed securely. This technology might lead to genuinely hands-free shopping. Customers could just grab items and leave the store. With devices powered by the UWB chip communicating with other UWB-enabled tags and payment terminals, the items someone has would be detected, and the cost automatically taken from the associated account, all while ensuring security through spatial authentication.
Beyond shopping, UWB could also make peer-to-peer payments easier. Instead of sifting through apps, just being nearby could prompt a payment screen on your iPhone, asking if you want to split the bill, recognizing your friend's device by its spatial position.
ACCESS CONTROL AND HANDS-FREE AUTHENTICATION
Finally, Apple's new second-gen UWB chip, can revolutionise the way we access and interact with spaces. Imagine arriving at a hotel. As you approach your room, the door recognises your smartphone and automatically unlocks without you having to fumble for a keycard or even touch the door.
Workplaces, especially those that involve machinery or secure data access, can benefit from hands-free authentication. Consider a research laboratory with multiple machines and computers. Instead of using passwords, keycards, or fingerprint scans, devices equipped with UWB sensors could detect the presence of an authorised UWB chip-carrying employee and unlock automatically.
The incorporation of the second generation UWB chip into a broader range of devices could dramatically transform the way we interact with the world, making our experiences smoother, more intuitive, and more secure. From hotels to workplaces, the possibilities for hands-free access and seamless interactions are vast and exciting.
