Omg anon is so right about Syd being shoehorned into everything. Like they are written to just be involved with everything like their the main character or the chosen one. Like you're seriously gonna tell me they're deeply connected to the temple, is some kind of vessel for augria, their parent is one of the teachers and the other was the priest (all the temple stuff is a little excusable though because they're the temple li but at the same time Whitney is the delinquent li but they aren't connected to every aspect of the criminal world, abd Eden is the forest npc but isn't deeply intertwined with blue presence, lake temple, etc.), they went to the asylum and knows about Harper's shenanigans, is apparently kylar's best friend and is connected to what happened to their parents, knows about great hawk and I think Morgan somehow, and knows the ivory Wraith personally? And nothing can be like, oh, they saw great hawks species in a book about extinct animals or something, it always has to be an implication that there's something more going on because Sydney is the most important person ever, and they can't just not be connected to things. And I've seen similar arguments brought up only to be shot down with "well the whole game is badly written then because the PC also does a bunch of important stuff" but the PC is the player character. You write those differently than NPCs. A lot of the time when someone writes for someone that is played as in a game, there's an implication that what the player does isn't necessarily all the same person in lore. Like maybe one orphan is doing the church stuff, and another is untangling the hookah parlor.

Sorry this turned into a rant, but the more I thought about how much of a marry sue/main character/chosen one/etc sydney is, the more I wrote

yeah! you can definitely see which characters are favourites (which is silly coming from me because i most definitely have a favourite) but yes. sydney somehow being:

would sydney be the boyest of failures if the echo lake incident never happened? (btw personally his pirate and boxing interests were his hyperfixations and also about kicking the fuck out of his dad- pirates dont follow the law and boxers-kick- punch the fuck outta people so he probs fixated on those because he wanted to teach and change his father.)

Alive Sydney AUs are always interesting to think about but a common pitfall I see people take is just not thinking about the full extend of what changes occur and the circumstances surrounding the change. I think we need to first figure out when the timeline splits for our hypothetical scenario. Are we following a timeline in which Sydney just didn't go with the rest of the group to Lake Emma? Are we following a scenario in which Mr. Bronson didn't die the way he did and thus Sydney didn't get possessed by the Samulation? Or is it that in this timeline Mr. Bronson never accidentally killed Sam Ayers? And thus he was never possessed? Cause I think that this will end up greatly impacting how Sydney turns out.

Cause if we're going under the idea that everything up until the Lake Emma incident is the same then I do not see things going well at all for Sydney. It's noted that ever since his father died and during the months leading up to his own death that Sydney would switch between his typical normal self and extreme aggression — implied to be due to the Samulation. If this kept up through his teenage years then I could see Sydney getting into serious trouble because of this. He was said to have caused some physical injuries to his friends during this time period by getting too violent with them when playing around and getting into these aggressive episodes. If this is like Chase's experience with the Samulation then I expect this to end up being thought of as a mental health issue which won't end up getting addressed due to its paranormal origin. And if that happens I wonder if the Samulation's hold on Sydney would worsen and if his aggression and violent tendencies would increase in severity and frequency. And if that happens then I fully expect it to cause issues for Sydney. Flynn's Samulation-induced hallucination at the end of his route is probably the closest thing we have seen to what Sydney would go through if he didn't die then, but even that was based on Flynn's own personal thoughts on what Sydney was like and how he'd turn out.

If we're saying that Mr. Bronson doesn't die on that hunting trip and Sydney never gets possessed then I think that this timeline is more akin to what a lot of Alive Sydney AUs depict, with a generally happier and more healthy dynamic between the group. I think that there is a solid chance that this timeline's Sydney is a goofy boyfailure, yes. Like a Reyn Xenoblade-esque kind of guy. A rambunctious, fun-loving, boyfailure who loves wrestling, ninjas, pirates, who hates his dad and maybe possibly gets into Situations with Flynn and Leo depending on the AU and headcanon about Sydney. I don't think he'll be as happy and as healthy as some depict him, especially with how his father was, but I do think he'd probably be better off than if he was possessed.

Now that last possibility is arguably the most interesting. What happens if Mr. Bronson never accidentally kills Sam? If that happens then it is likely, if not guaranteed, that Mr. Bronson doesn't get possessed by the Samulation. And if that's the case then maybe he doesn't turn out to be such a shitty father. And if what you say about Sydney's interests are true, then would Sydney in this timeline still enjoy those things? Would Sydney even exist at all in this timeline? Cause Sam's death strained Mr. Bronson and Janice's relationship and is part of the reason they split so maybe in this timeline Mr. Bronson and Janice never break up and so Mr. Bronson and Eliza wouldn't get together and have Sydney.

There are so many possibilities with Alive Sydney timelines depending on when things split from the main Echo timeline. I think it'd be cool to see specific instances of what makes these AUs differ from the canon timelines utilized to explore Sydney's character and dynamic with Flynn and the others rather than a vague "Sydney is alive!" sort of AU. Especially with Chase, cause if Chase doesn't get possessed then he never has that more subdued "rock-like" personality that he has in the main game. I wonder how Chase and Sydney would interact if Chase still had his more judgmental and snarky traits like he does as a kid and when the Samulation stops possessing him in Flynn's route.

Im really not trying to start an argument, but even if elijah had a mental illness diagnosis that wouldn't make me feel more sympathy for him for the way he behaved. Even if sydney was asleep eli was still trying to keep him isolated. I feel like he was a creep from the start, mental illness or not. And being mentally ill doesn't save you from criticism or from hate or judgement. He can be mentally ill, that doesn't mean ill feel bad for him for it. If elijah and sydney switched places id still stand by this take. Opinions on Flynn?

at first i kind of hated the guy and that lasted 90% of the vn until I finally read his route and realized that he is probably the best written character in the vn.

he's not Chase........but even i can admit that Flynn is probably the most important character to the narrative overall and if we weren't looking at the world through Chase's eyes then we'd probably be seeing it through Flynn's. uber good character though I rarely if ever think of him.

cause like UGH he's so important and I really like his writing but I like every other main character more than him as a person and as a character y'know? y'all get me right? I LOVE him from a narrative pov but Flynn from a "would I invite this guy to my and Chase's wedding?" perspective, he'd go in the "no but he's Chase's childhood friend so he'll get an invite and I'd wave and smile at him but not much else" category

and I feel BAD cause tbh he's completely right in being pissed especially at the beginning of the vn. he's kept in the dark about his friend's death and tbh sydney is an otter so him drowning at all is kinda sus. but idk i just dont vibe with him at all. i would do MANY things with Chase, I'd hang with Jenna and Leo. Flynn though eeeehhhhh he has Carl by his side he'll be fine. he has a cool design tho! :3

How did you come up with your author name?

Davern is the oldest maternal bloodline name. My "real" last name isn't even a guy im related to, it was my grandmother's gay roommate who signed my father's birth certificate. So in picking a name I wanted to re-connect my identity to the oldest matriarchy in my bloodline so Davern was the oldest-dated last name i could find tracing my matriarchal line. S either stands for Sarah or Sydney depending on how gender-ey I feel. The L has to do with my birth name which i dont want to give away it is actually my middle name but I swapped around the initials because I thought it was funny to have LSD as my pen name (I was 18 don't @ me lmfao). I don't want anybody to see my name and think they know about me, about if Im a boy or girl, about where I stand politically, etc and on top of that i hate a lot of my relatives so I don't want to keep their name in my pen name especially the males which is why I had my mom who is really into family history find what was the oldest matriarchal last name we had record of. I want to be able to live my life separately from my character as an author if that makes sense. Sort of like Jt Leroy without the lying/fake body double lol I want LS Davern as a character/public figure to be separate from me, Sarah, the author. I don't want to be personally consumed and like I said I don't want strangers on the street thinking they know about me.

I just finished watching "The bear" and here why I loved it so much

(this is my opinion, I have no experience on cinematography or audio or storytelling nor am I a cinemaholic :) :-

It's so human.

Like I know it's a show but whilst watching I catch myself feeling like I'm being allowed to witness these people that are in the restaurant industry and how they're living. I feel like I'm peering to other genuine people's lives and being allowed to watch their journey in a way, their normal daily lives.

It's also very short.

My impatience with starting and watching most shows is that they're unnecessarily long as fuck. They will be like 1 hr episodes and then at least 8-10 eps in a season and it's will not even be that deep, most of it is just empty scenes that don't really add much to anything. You know when in some shows or movies they'll have "empty" scenes that dont add much to the show or anything but they're still meaningful cause they're pushing the show forward and maybe setting the tone or letting us breath or they're simply gorgeous to behold. So you still don't feel like they're a waste of time cause thought was put into them, the entirety of the bear feels like that.

Also I just love-love- how the relationships develop in the whole show. Not necessarily between the characters too but with how we perceive some characters. The one I can think of at the top of my head is Pete; cause when he was introduced and the first few times we see him he's kinda treated like "the loser" and no one kind of takes him seriously and you feel as though he's just a person whose pushed around and just taking it. But then that scene with Donna(Carm and Sugs mom) it really drove me to tears cause he isn't dense or stupidly ignorant, he knows what's up but he's trying to go about it in his own way- a subtle way. He doesn't insult nor curse and he's loving, he wants the best for his wife but he also understands where her mom is coming from. He isn't hateful and we see that play out in while cutting into the scenes of the mess in the kitchen. It felt so real. He felt like Waymond for me just a little.

And then there's richie's arc which we can all agree on obviously; the whole mushroom peeling scence is just absolutely wonderful and the build up to it. And when he was singing taylor swifts song, it just came together so beautifully.

The Sydney episode- like the whole thing was just beautiful. The joy the actual fucking joy I felt seeing her move around and see her kind of assemble this vision of hers to a point and then her trying it out. The whole scence with her father in the diner thing celebrating her moms birthday and him telling her this story of their date. I actually cried there cause I remember having almost the exact same kind of convos with my father multiple times; how you can feel that he loves her but also wants to make sure that she's sure about what she's doing, not cause he doubts her but cause she doubts herself. Their whole gentle relationship which I had not expected at all; and which I love.

And Marcus going to Copenhagen and how at the end of that episode I just felt relief that nothing bad happened. How gentle the entire thing was and how we got to know Marcus as a person away from the beef. How he is kind and loving and passionate. The whole conversation with Luca (the chef)- dont even get me started on that convo- I felt like I was actually sitting there and listening in on a convo between two people. The hug with that guy that marcus helped, how relieving it was. The whole episode was a gentle step back and from all the chaos and just existing day to day. It's quiet and tranquil.

AND THE FUCKING MULATU ASTATKE SONG DROP! That entirely surprised me cause I had to take a sec; the use of Ethiopian music is something I'd never thought I'd see especially used so perfectly for a scence in Hollywood. I could tell there was some habesha that participated- Sydney's family name is also Adamu like. I couldn't find out who though but I felt so proud and happy and I really appreciated it. And i knoooowww some habesha was involved (but I couldn't find out who) and I am so proud of them.

The whole Christmas episode and how -just beautifully it was executed. A lot of families are like that. My family is like that- well minus the fights and knocking down walls with your car part, but the tension is exactly like that when I was growing up. And I didnt feel stressed out of my mind watching but I understood, I understood where everyone was coming from, and how people get to those points that they get to. And it did a wonderful job conveying that. And the desire that you have to leave but the thought that they're your family. And the guilt that some of them probably feel because of Michel's death cause of the toxic environment that was created but is ultimately no one's fault in that sense (like carms mom and maybe carm himself).

The whole Ebari part where he's saying he doesn't wanna change but then we see him later watching a vid in his own place in the kitchen and agreeing and in the background the picture of the 3 of them is hanging.

Again very very human and just life, it felt relatable and understandable. Just came to accept and see these characters as real genuine people as the show went on, like the people in my life.

These characters just feel like people and people are soggy and not perfect and when interacting we don't fit eachother as well as we thought we would and there's friction. And some one needs to apologize and someone needs to be the bigger person but it's hard and it takes time. And it requires constant constant work. And they do a real good job at it. I just love love the show and seeing as how I normally have 0 patience to watch show if I'm not interested by the 4th ep, I will say I will be watching and rewatching this multiple times. Highly recommend.

the show runners have an unhealthy obsession with montages. step away from premier pro guys please. marcus suffered the worst from this - his scenes in copenhagen were mostly montages

all the claire scenes felt weird and she kinda came out of nowhere but that might just be because romance doesnt really feel right on the show. i just like all the platonic moments better. she's a cool character and i hope she sticks around. maybe with more flaws this time cos jesus she was a bit perfect. would have liked for her to be a bit more flaky cos she is supposed to be a very busy doctor.

that being said, the weird vibe of claire's scenes kinda worked to show carmen's discomfort with normalcy and having fun

but idk i think that would have worked more if it wasnt so boring (not claires fault. the actress is great. the pacing just was off)

speaking of romance, i like everyone as friends. apart from richie and fak who seemed like they were going to kiss in every scene they were in

speaking of richie: he had the best arc in season 2!! love him and need more of him even though there was a whole ep dedicated to him. i love that he wears suits now. also tiff is great i love tiff

need more ebra and garry! ebra's plot point as tina's foil was cool but i would have liked to see his side more than just a moody shot of him smoking a cigar

please please please dont turn marcus into a pining unrequited love interest in s3. he is so much more than that. he is such a good character!!

that scene with the fire suppression was really funny because they had to do a mini flashback for each character but some of the characters had had barely any scenes so their flashbacks were really random

they keep telling us that carmen is really good at cooking but i would love to actually see him cook! feel like he's always just standing around shouting
