Wimbledon WD F: Taylor Townsend/Katerina Siniakova [4] def. Gabriela Dabrowski/Erin Routliffe [2] 7-6(5), 7-6(1) Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 Wimbledon official app
Gaby/Erin had their fair chances until at least the beginning of the second set, but Taylor/Katka's anticipative returns and court coverage helped them to stand out in this match. Add pacing to the mix as well, they dominated the second set tie-break while a combination between their point construction and pace absorption helped them nail the first-set tie-break. Even though Gaby/Erin tried to optimize their chances by converting 25% of their break points, Taylor/Katka created 9 opportunities to break, some of those thanks to their 14 winners as they utilized the open court well to shift the moment to their advantage while the second seeds were also hampered by their 6 unforced errors, making most of their +1 errors forced ones.
Besides, Taylor/Katka appeared slightly more solid on their serves. Scoring 5 aces than Gaby/Erin's 1, they landed 76% of their first serves and optimized it to win 78% of their first serve points, which helped them to get out of some pressing moments on their serve, especially in their return follow-ups. However, this left the second seeds' second serves slightly more vulnerable by 6%, as they double-faulted thrice, making their second serves more at risk as evident in how the match was finished.
This marked Taylor/Katka's maiden title as a pair, with Katka winning her 9th doubles Grand Slam title (3rd in Wimbledon), as well as completing the Channel Slam as she also won Roland Garros with Coco Gauff a month back. Somehow, this was Taylor's maiden Grand Slam title, which could be considered as long overdue, and even if it's in doubles as well, she would take that. This meant Katka had 3 potential pairings leading up to the Tour finals, but she eventually has to choose as the season progresses further, with jokes surrounding her next partner are cracked online. Mindblowing.

WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Finals 2022
Tennis time in Japan! 🎾 #twosecondstreet #wta
I don’t typically watch sports on TV very often; I get very easily distracted. But plop me down in a stadium, and I could chill and watch sports for hours. That’s what happened with me and tennis as I found myself at the Toray Pan Pacific Open (TPPO) tennis finals this year. (more…)

-Lorenzo Musetti-

Tebrik ederiz.

Taylor/Katka tried to maintain their form in the second set, but they received a stiff opposition from Gaby/Erin, thus they were unable to take their chances until the match was settled through another tie-breaker. In this case, after the let cord moment, there was a functional volley from Erin to create her and Gaby's break point to 2-1* 15-40 in the beginning of the second set, but Taylor/Katka scored a massive hold to 2-2, where Katka's volley for her and Taylor's game point earlier helped a lot.
Several games later, it turned out that Taylor became more comfortable with the angles, scoring a cross-court backhand winner to pave the way for their initial break point, but Gaby's working serve+1 fumbled the fourth seeds' break point before they had another big hold to 4-3. Point construction did its job again for Taylor/Katka, where Katka unleashed that backhand around the post, but their lead got neutralized before Taylor's backhand return ace created their break point. The second seeds then saved them with an unreturned serve and had another gigantic hold to 5-4.
The tie-breaker then became inevitable, where Taylor's forehand return ace set the lead to 1-0 before they held their serves until 3-0. Their exceptional point construction and shot placement also continued where Katka fired her final backhand to double the mini-break lead (4-0), widening the lead after going around the post before the final volley (5-0). Gaby/Erin got a chance to hold a game, but their double-fault 2 points later converted the match point for Taylor/Katka, taking the second set 7-6(1) for their first title as a pair.

Australian Open: Hsieh-Mertens Pair Battles Into Women s Doubles Final
Tumblr media
WTA Doubles World No: The no.2 seeds Begian-Taipei pair Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens booked their spot in the Australian Open women's doubles final with a gripping semifinal 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 win over No.3 seeds Czech-Aussie duo Storm Hunter and Katerina Siniakova on Thursday. Hsieh and Mertens took 2 hours and 35 minutes to overcome Hunter and Siniakova in an engrossing match involving four players who have all held the WTA Doubles World No.1 ranking here at Margaret Court Arena. Mertens is a win away from her fourth Grand Slam title in women's doubles, and her second at the Australian Open. She teamed with Aryna Sabalenka to win the title Down Under in 2021, according to WTA. On the other hand, Hsieh has won six Grand Slam titles in women's doubles -- including two last year -- but she has yet to take the title in Melbourne. Her best Australian Open result is a runner-up showing alongside Barbora Strycova in 2020. Hsieh and Mertens will face either No.11 seeds Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko or No.4 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe, last year's US Open champions. Read the full article
