Cora Ann Neikirk, 87

Cora Ann Neikirk, age 87, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, February 28, 2020 at Wilkes Senior Village.

She was born October 10, 1932 in Wilkes County to Gordon Russell and Maggie Gray Godbee. Cora was retired from Tyson Foods. She loved to do crafts. Ms. Neikirk was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her children, Al Davis and spouse Annie of Texas, Linda Norris and spouse Lee of Wilkesboro, Tony Davis and spouse Joyce of Moravian Falls, Debbie Smith and spouse Shep of Taylors, South Carolina; thirteen grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren; and a number of great great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Miller Funeral Chapel with Eulogy by the family. Mr. William Francis Dargin

Mr. William Francis Dargin, age 79 of Wilkesboro passed away Friday, February 28, 2020 at his home.

Memorial services with Military Honors by the Veterans of Foreign War Post # 1142 will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Matt Miller officiating.

Mr. Dargin was born February 21, 1941 in Newark, NJ to William J. and Margaret M. McClain Dargin. He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a Mensa member, Friends of the Wilkes County Library and he had a lifelong love of boats and sailing. He was an avid gardener and mentor to many teens and young adults. He had a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years; Laurie Volsdal Frachey-Dargin of the home, three daughters; Heather Bartram and husband Brian of Connecticut, Liv Perry and husband Ross of Vermont, Kimberly Crabb of Wilkesboro, two sons; Jared Dargin and Tammie Brown of Millers Creek and David Frachey and wife Deidre’ of Connecticut, four grandchildren; Jim and John Bartram of Connecticut, Eli Perry of Vermont, Nathaniel and Theodor Frachey of Connecticut, one sister; Margo O’Malley and husband Tim of Tennessee, dear friends; Shasta Phillips, Shelia Owens, Collee Riddle, companion canine; Macy, several nieces, nephews and several great nieces and nephews around the globe.

Marvin Franklin Wagoner, age 66, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, February 29, 2020 at his home. Mr. Wagoner was born November 12, 1953 in Wilkes County to Raymond Hobert and Bessie Viola Royal Wagoner. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rufus Wagoner; and sisters, Margie Wagoner and Geneva Wagoner.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda Brown Wagoner; sons, Joe Wagoner and spouse Retha, Mickey Wagoner and spouse Amanda all of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Jeremiah Wagoner and spouse Kayla, Joe Joe Wagoner and spouse Megan, Tommy Wagoner, Sophia Wagoner, Dakota Wagoner, Gina Wagoner, Mickey Wagoner, Jr.; great grandchildren, Jazmine Wagoner, Abigail Wagoner, Aria Wagoner, Joseph Keith Wagoner; and brother, Spencer Wagoner and spouse Verna of North Wilkesboro.

Gladys Wyatt Roberts, 70

Gladys Wyatt Roberts, age 70, of Millers Creek, passed away Friday, February 28, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. Mrs. Roberts was born July 13, 1949 in Wilkes County to Rev. Archie and Julie Cleary Wyatt. Gladys was a member of New Light Baptist Church #2. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud Roberts; great grandchild, Gauge Bumgarner; and sister, Clara Hart.

Surviving are her son, Allen Roberts and spouse Becky, Millers Creek; daughter, Pat Roberts and fiancé James Hart of Millers Creek; grandchildren, Julia Medford and spouse Michael of North Wilkesboro, Jason Bumgarner and spouse Celeita, Halie Smith all of Millers Creek; great grandchildren, Jayden Bumgarner and Kason Bumgarner both of Millers Creek; several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mikey James Lovette, age 37, of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2020 at his home. Mikey was born August 14, 1982 in Wilkes County to Janet Vivian Johnson Lovette. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cecil and Marie Lovette and Lawrence Johnson.

Surviving are his mother, Janet Johnson Gregory of North Wilkesboro; sister, Malisa Lovette and fiancé, Oliver Bentley of Wilkesboro; aunt, Sandra McCrary and spouse Randy, Smithfield, Virginia; nephews, Tyler Carter, Trace Bentley, Bradley Vorsteg, Elijah Bentley, and niece, Jaycee Carter.

Carlie Elvin Cleary, age 87

Carlie Elvin Cleary, age 87, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at his home.

Carlie was born December 7, 1932 in Wilkes County to Raymond and Mozelle Ballard Cleary. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, a US Navy Veteran; was a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Cleary was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Scott Bryan Cleary, Mark Elvin Cleary; sister, Bernice Cleary; brother, Arbury Cleary; and a step-daughter, Paula Sebastian.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Porter Cleary; step son, David M. Wyatt and spouse Sandy of Millers Creek; step daughters, Tamara Wyatt of Wilkesboro, Nikole McGuire and spouse Chris of North Wilkesboro; brother, Larry Cleary of North Wilkesboro; sister, Barbara Jean Cooney and spouse Dan of Knoxville, Tennessee; eight step grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special little friends, Katie Owens and Bubba Prevette.

Donald Ray Ferguson, 73

Mr. Donald Ray Ferguson, age 73 of Millers Creek passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Wilkes Health and Rehabilitation.

Graveside service were held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilkesboro with Rev Gwyn Anderson officiating. The family received friends from 12:30 until 1:30 PM prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Ferguson was born May 18,1946 in Wilkes County to Everette and Ruby Nichols Ferguson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Fred and Robert Ferguson.

He is survived by a sister, Betty Jean Ferguson Price and husband, Sydney of North Wilkesboro, a brother, Bill Ferguson of North Wilkesboro, a sister in-law, Helen Ferguson, of Millers Creek, and special friends, Wanda and Danny Byers of Millers Creek.

Mr. Gary Dale Colbert age 55, of North Wilkesboro passed away February 25, 2020 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at Reins Sturdivant Chapel Sunday, March 1, 2020 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Danny Bauguess officiating. The family received friends from 12:00 until 1:45 prior to the service. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Colbert was born January 1, 1965 to Fred Ray Colbert and Blanche Durham Colbert. He was self-employed as a Little Debbie Distributor.

Mr. Colbert was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bruce Colbert.

He is survived by a son, Cory Garrett Colbert of the home, Gary’s fiancé, Samantha Hamby of the home, a sister, Cindy Colbert of Elkin, a brother Bobby Colbert and wife Kathy of Traphill. Beloved father figure to nieces Jenna Lyons, Gracie Colbert, nephew Traeson Colbert and Sammi Jo Walker, and also survived by niece, Kathy Jo McGee and nephew, Matthew Colbert.

Mrs. Wilhelmenia Wilby Greene Harris, 90, of Millers Creek, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020 at Maple Leaf Health Care in Statesville.

Wilhelmenia was born on June 25, 1929 in Watauga County to Willie Lawrence Greene and Flora Belle Greene.

Wilhelmenia was a homemaker and life long member of Stony Fork Baptist Church.

Wilhelmenia is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Samuel LeRoy Harris; daughter, Cathy “Vicky” Harris; brothers, Claude Greene, Cecil Greene; sisters, Wilma Latham, Lorena Greene, Linda Kay Watson.

Wilhelmenia is survived by her sons, Robert Alan Harris (Kelly Church) of Wilkesboro, Barry Harris (Rebecca) of Statesville; sister, Louella Copley of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Madison Harris of Statesville, McKenzie Harris of Millers Creek; two great grandchildren, Tanner and Shania of Statesville and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Sunday, March 1, 2020 from 2:00-2:45 at Stony Fork Baptist Church. The funeral service was held on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Stony Fork Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hamby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Max Aldean Hamby, a sister; Marybelle Hayes Johnson, a brother; William Jasper Hayes and two brother in laws; Walter George and Lester Johnson.

Mrs. Virginia Fay Handy Watson, age 65 of Sparta passed away Monday, February 24, 2020 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, Elkin NC.

Mrs. Watson was born December 2, 1954 in Wilkes County to Mack Charlie Handy and Merle Blevins Handy. She started at Chatham’s in 1994 and worked there until 2016. She retired after 22 years. She loved her grandchildren, was an avid church goer, made a mean gravy and biscuit, liked canning, cooking, and planning family get togethers.

In addition her parents, he was preceded in death by her husband; Tony Clinard Watson; one sister Ester Mae Handy and three brothers Charlie, Billy, and Bobby Handy.

She is survived by her daughter; Lisa McCann of Ronda and boyfriend Gary Perdue, and two sons, Tony Dale Watson and girlfriend Jessica Venable of Ennice, NC; Larry Watson and wife Jessica Watson of State Road; four sisters, Patsy Lail, Rita Anderson.Tina Lambert, and Angie Holder; two brothers, James Handy and Chris Mcharque Thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and a special friend, Jimmy Billings.

Dare Foster Moore, age 89, of Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, February 24, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. She was born September 3, 1930 in Wilkes County to Alonzo and Nora Riggs McNeil. Mrs. Moore was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She loved cooking, music, dancing, fashion and decorating. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby Ray Moore; son, Michael Foster; daughter, Susan Faye Foster; four brothers; and four sisters.

Bina Louise Myers, age 82, of Hays, went home to be with Jesus, Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at her home. Mrs. Myers was born March 12, 1937 in Watauga County to Edward and Lona Belle Tedder Brewer. She was a member of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church and was a prayer warrior. Bina loved gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James Brewer, Dean Brewer, sisters, Ella Mae Huggins and Jean Ring; son-in-law, Craig Gambill.

Clyde Grady Nickelson, age 83, of Millers Creek, passed away Monday, February 24, 2020 at his home. Clyde was born July 12, 1936 in Ashe County to Robnit and Grace Barker Nickelson. He was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. He loved to garden, loved his plants and trees, and being outdoors. Clyde worked for Lowe’s Co. as a truck driver and 33 years for Skyline Marina as manager. Mr. Nickelson was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jim Stone.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Johnson Nickelson; sons, Clyde Nickelson, Jr. of Ronda, Michael Shane Nickelson of Purlear; daughters, Phyllis Keen of Layton, Utah, Roberta Hadley of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sheree Smith of Victory, Texas; brother, Duane Stone of Millers Creek; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Kaye C. Reid, age 81, of Purlear, went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, February 23, 2020 at her home. Kaye was born May 18, 1938 in Wilkes County to E.M. and Iola Church Campbell. Mrs. Reid was a member of Rock Creek Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy Wayne Reid; brother, Bobby Campbell; and sister, Virgie Campbell.

Kaye is survived by her son, Guy Wayne Reid and spouse Lonnitta of Millers Creek; grandson, David Wayne Reid and spouse Jamie of Cary; granddaughter, Ricquell Cooper of Charlotte; great grandson, Gavin Wayne Reid of Cary; brother, James Campbell and spouse Judy of Wilkesboro; sister, Jane Bouchelle and spouse Jim of North Wilkesboro; a number of nieces and nephews.

Aaaaand we have liftoff! Thanks for your patience. Here’s obituary and celebration of life details for our dear father and husband: Chester S. McLaren March 6, 1935-November 25, 2021 Our beloved Chester S. McLaren, Jr., 86 of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Carney’s Point, NJ passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving at Foulk Manor North, Wilmington, DE after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. The family wishes to thank all caregivers at Foulk Manor North and South, and the entire care team at VITAS hospice company for their loving care during his illness as well as Donald & Linda McLaren and Joe Budischak for their weekly visits. Chester graduated from Penns Grove High School in 1953, attended Ohio State from 1953-1955 and went in to serve in the US Army, stationed at Ft. Hood, TX from July 6, 1955-July 3, 1958 where he learned to be a Dental Technician. His career dream was to be employed by the DuPont company which he achieved by working as a Lab Technician at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE. He embraced the company culture of Safety First as a lifelong part of his personality. His joy was music—a masterful piano player, he also played flute and other instruments and was a longtime member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church choir. Chester loved building and construction—being a Maker of Things and a Master of Repairs. He was a talented artist in both painting and sculpture, an avid gardener, with a fascination of the night sky and a love of Astronomy. He traveled extensively with his family and with his wife both in the US and the world and enjoyed Civil War history. His greatest achievement in this life was being a loving and devoted husband to his wife Ruth Anne McLaren for 56 years, an incredible and beloved father, grandfather, uncles and brother. Chester was patient, loving, kind with a bright smile for everyone who showed his love through acts of service both in his family and community by volunteering at The Emmanuel Dining Room, The Grand Opera House, and Longwood Gardens. As well as exemplary new housing, education and healthcare facilities, this year’s RIAS Awards winners include a new training centre for Scotland’s sporting champions, a temporary museum housing a Charles Rennie Mackintosh masterpiece, and a moveable microhome on the Isle of Skye.

Aberdeen Art Gallery, Aberdeen by Hoskins Architects

Aberdeen Art Gallery

A decade-long redevelopment project, delivering major new exhibition and education spaces, a complete renewal of servicing and environmental control systems, as well as improved art handling, storage, back of house and study facilities. The special character of the original spaces is preserved, while a dramatic new rooftop extension signals the gallery’s renewal to the city.

Altarf, Isle of Skye by Ann Nisbet Studio

This moveable one-bedroom home emulates the form and proportions of traditional highland rural houses, and was developed as a prototype lightweight and thermally efficient house for a rural landscape. Its three open light-filled rooms flow into each other, and feature deep storage to make clever use of the limited space. Designed to be beautiful while also being practical and sustainable, the re-use and maintenance of this project were paramount to its creation.

An Cala, Sutherland by Mary Arnold-Forster Architects

This two-bedroom micro-home was designed to fit on a fixed grid that related to the size of a lorry, with its 13 modules constructed offsite, transported up a single track lane and erected in four days on a site facing Loch Nedd. The robust house can face all weathers and requires no heating apart from a small wood burner.

Bayes Centre, Edinburgh by Bennetts Associates

Bayes Centre

Edinburgh University’s new building the final phase of a redevelopment programme commenced in 2003. This is a building for research, business and learning, designed to enable collaboration between different users in the data industry, and a place to linger and exchange ideas.

Dunira Street Housing, Glasgow by Elder & Cannon Architects This development of 71 homes is part of a larger regeneration programme in Glasgow, and provides a wide variety of homes, including accessible flats and houses. Elder & Cannon Architects have reinstated a perimeter ‘tenement’ block, carefully balancing private amenity space and an improved public realm.

Edinburgh Printmakers, Edinburgh by Page\Park Architects The only surviving structure from the Castle Mills industrial complex – where almost 2 million pairs of rubber boots were made for the British Army in World War One- is now a new creative hub, thanks the redevelopment of a derelict listed derelict building into a welcoming multi-use arts complex.

The Egg Shed, Ardrishaig by Oliver Chapman Architects The aim of this modest building was to improve the built environment of Ardrishaig’s waterfront and increase the tourist offer within the village. The Egg Shed provides a new destination for learning about the rich heritage of the area alongside facilities for both visitors and local residents. Using flood resistant materials this easily visible project builds upon Scottish Canals’ existing facilities to allow story-telling and tourism to flourish.

The Hill House Box, Helensburgh by Carmody Groarke A radical approach to conservation sees the creation of a demountable structure and walkway encasing Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Grade A listed masterpiece, in a hybridisation of tradition and intervention. The Hill House Box provides an environment for the building to dry out from prolonged water damage, alongside visitor facilities allowing people to see its conservation at close quarters.

King’s Stables Road, Edinburgh by Fletcher Joseph Associates This mix of private and rented accommodation (including student flats and a hotel) transforms a former council depot into a lively, attractive environment. Its muted palette of traditional materials blends into the existing fabric of the Old Town, and the improved public realm is now linked to historic closes with views to and from Edinburgh Castle.

Kyle House, Sutherland by Groves-Raines Architects Studios Ltd. Believed to have been built using stones from the nearby Dun Mhaigh Iron Age broch, this nineteenth century unlisted building has been brought back to life as a place for guests to spend time in a beautiful Sutherland landscape. Groves-Raines Architects’ restoration and refurbishment has introduced subtle yet significant contemporary interventions to the exterior, and a series of highly refined, almost monastic interiors within.

Maidenhill Primary School and Nursery, Newton Mearns by BDP Sitting in the heart of a brand new 800 house development, this school provides a variety of flexible spaces for learning arranged around a central atrium ‘heart’. A restrained palette of colours creates a comforting background to learning, and a thoughtful relationship with the surrounding landscape gives pupils space to explore.

Maryhill Locks, Maryhill by jmarchitects Maryhill Locks reinterprets the traditional terrace to create 33 flexible and sustainable homes for young professionals and families, close to Glasgow city centre. Brick enclosures at the front cleverly conceal bins and cars, a linking footpath behind the rear gardens is a safe shared space for young children to play, and a hidden allotment sits at the heart of the scheme.

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, Glasgow by Ryder Architecture This innovative and welcoming building and landscape puts patients first, and is the first hospice in the UK to follow the Scandinavian-inspired ‘Sengetun’ model of care which puts placemaking at its heart. The hospice creates light-filled and familiar places that look and feel like home, with medical assistance sitting firmly in the background.

sportscotland National Sports Training Centre Inverclyde by Reiach and Hall Architects Designed as the UK’s first fully inclusive residential sports facility, this project boasts impressive sports training facilities alongside flexible and adaptable space for accommodation, learning, meeting and offices, with a ribbon-like design that weaves across the landscape. Athletes who have trained here include several Scottish Paralympians – currently seeking glory in Tokyo.

The RIAS Awards demonstrate the quality and breadth of architectural endeavour in Scotland. All types and sizes of architectural projects can win a RIAS Award, as the list of 2021 awards winners demonstrates. Buildings are assessed by an expert jury who look at each project’s architectural integrity, usability and context, delivery and execution, and sustainability.

The winners of the RIAS Awards will become the ‘longlist’ for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award. The shortlist for the 2021 Andrew Doolan Award will be announced on 30 September, with the winner announced on 30 November.

The Keeper of the Grove (Part 34)

Weiss was in her dream world once more.

This time, the scene was her ever growing garden, vegetables growing to massive sizes with speed that they could have only dreamed about in Candela. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the actual Jacques Schnee was tied to a post where the scarecrow was, silent and scowling as he reluctantly protected his daughter's crops.

Nick chuckled as he walked through her garden, careful to step between the neat pathways she'd carved out. “Well ain't this a sight for sore eyes!” he said as he came up to edge of where Weiss was working.

“Mhmm!” Weiss said as she knelt in the ground, carefully clipping her herbs. “Thanks for the pep-talk and the advice, grandpa; I really needed those.”

Nick snorted. “Don't thank me, thank yourself! You know, especially because I really could just be the back of your head using me like a sock puppet, or something.”

“You're not going to turn into another me, are you?” Weiss asked as she tossed leaves into the pockets of her dress. “Because that'd just be creepy.”

Nick shrugged. “Your mind, your rules, sweetheart!”

“Then you stay as my dead grandpa,” Weiss said as she finished up.

She and Nick spent a while admiring her work; she hadn't come close to clearing even a quarter of the overgrowth, but damned if she hadn't made a fine looking garden.

“Is this what it felt like for you, grandpa?” Weiss asked. “When you and the crew were out on expeditions?”

“HELL NO!” Nick yelled. “All that time spent roaming around and trying to look for anything that could help were objectively the worst time of my entire life, second only to when Frosty told me she was pregnant with Snowie while we were still out in the middle of Fucking Nowhere, and third to when Jackass over there didn't even wait for me to kick the bucket before he set the company on its death-spiral!”

“The company has never been more profitable since I took over!” Jacques yelled.

“YEAH, AND THAT WORKED OUT REAL WELL FOR YOU, DIDN'T IT?!” Nick yelled back. He groaned and shook his head, before he turned back to Weiss. “Anyway, the journey sucked, but when we hit pay dirt, there was nothing like it! It's what kept us all going, all those little victories, even after we found that mother of all wellsprings.”

Nick frowned. “It's what kept me going long before I should have retired, too...”

Weiss reached out and put her hand in his calloused palm. He wrapped his fingers around her hand, held her like he was never going to let her go, let anyone take her from him.

“Was it worth it, grandpa?” she asked softly.

“More than worth it...” Nick muttered, smiling. “Hell, now we got a problem with Candela bleeding every other city state dry for everything they've got, but at the very least, we're not shooting each other dead over the last can of spam!

“Anything worthwhile is going to be harder than hell and cost a lot, Weiss,” Nick said. “If it were easy and cheap, we'd never be talking about people like me, or erecting commemorative statues before tearing them back down because I specifically asked those asshats to put up one of Frosty, not me!”

Weiss giggled. It was one of her favourite stories about her grandfather, the time he snuck out of his hospice, flew over the crowds with Tony's help, and personally stopped them from cutting the ribbon on his new statue, then refused to be put back on life support until he saw them taking it down right before his very eyes.

It shortened his already grim lifespan even more, but it was worth it.

“And speaking of costs, you're going to be paying one of them real soon, sweetheart!”

“What, muscle soreness from all the farming and training? I've got Penny for that!”

“Haaah… yeah... I'm pretty sure she's using the 'Resonator' tech me and the Nerd Herd modified the crap out of pre-Candela, and the thing is, there was a HUGE flaw in our design that we never really solved, and no one's been able to crack since, either.”

Weiss frowned. “What flaw?”

Nick frowned as he started to fade away. “Brace yourself, sweetheart, you're going to find out in about 3, 2, 1...”

Weiss woke up.

It was dark, moonlight streaming in through the window. Owls hooted, frogs croaked, Ruby drooled all over her pillows and sheets. Everything was calm and peaceful, except for the fact that every part of Weiss' body hurt.

As it always tended to happen, a memory came screaming up to the forefront of her mind, too little, too late:

Penny, doing her usual treatment to help Weiss with her soreness, the pain and the aching disappearing with the discharge of magic.

Weiss climbing out of her hammock, limber and feeling like she could run a triathlon right there and then.

“I noticed you've been dramatically increasing your levels of physical activity recently, Weiss.” Penny said.

“Yeah, all that training's working wonders—I'm feeling stronger and stronger every day!” Weiss as she headed out the door.

“That's great to hear! But as your personal Mender, I have to warn you against overexerting yourself.” Penny said as she followed her.

“What, afraid I'm going to wake up even more sore than usual? You have all that Mender magitech on you, don't you?” Weiss asked as she headed out to the halls.

“True, but they have their limits,” Penny said as they headed out the front door. “Magic in living bodies can only last for so long before it dissipates back into the environment, and I'd hate to think of what sort of damage you could accidentally inflict on yourself while you're under effects similar to high-grade painkillers.”

“I'll be careful, I promise,” Weiss replied as she headed down the elevator to her garden.

But evidently not careful enough. Weiss tried to move her arm, winced as pain shot up her spine and the rest of her body followed suit, her stiff muscles simultaneously screaming in agony. Paralyzed, she could only let out a tiny whimper of pain.

Ruby's ears twitched. Weiss heard her snort, she groggily raised her head up. “Weiss…?” she muttered.

“Ruby...” Weiss whispered. “Help…!”

Ruby blinked, her instincts kicking into high gear, up in an instant and scrambling over to Weiss. She looked her over once, and instantly knew what was wrong. “Oh man, Stiff-Stuck?”

Weiss made an affirmative noise. “Get Penny...”

Ruby frowned. “Can't: she's totally drained from the hunts today, she won't be ready for anything until morning.”

Weiss whimpered, tearing up.

“Wait, no! Don't cry! Don't cry!” Ruby said as she scrambled off, dug through her piles of belongings. “All of us watchers learn everything there is about massaging sore muscles!” she said as she pulled out a container of ointment, then pumped her fist in victory. “I might not be as good as a therapy mender or Penny, but I can help till we can get you to the hot springs!” she said as she laid it down by her bed and scrambled back to Weiss.

“I'm going to need to carry you to my nest, okay?” Ruby said as she reached for her. “I'm sorry, but this is really going to hurt...”

Weiss whimpered and squeezed her eyes shut.

It hurt. It really, really, really hurt. Ruby was fast and strong, capable of picking her up like she was nothing and laying her down on her nest in the span of a few seconds, but even the tiniest movement was agony.

“I'm going to need you to take your clothes off now,” Ruby said. “Or, you know, I'll have to take your clothes off, since you can't...”

Weiss eyes opened wide in alarm. Her cheeks began to burn. She would have protested if she could, but all she could manage was a squeak of panic.

“I can't massage you properly through your clothes, Weiss!” Ruby explained. “I mean, I've already seen you naked before at the hot springs, so it's not like it's anything I haven't seen already, right?”

The burning worsened.

Ruby bit her lip, took a moment to consider her next words very carefully. “Will it help if I close my eyes? We were trained to do it blind, too! Just tell me! On second thought: blink twice for 'Yes.'”

Weiss debated it. Suffer for however many hours until Penny was done charging, let alone capable of helping her, or have Ruby strip her naked and massage her, a buffer till they could get to the hot springs come morning?

Blink, blink.

Ruby went to work. She kept her eyes open only long enough to strip Weiss naked, open the jar of ointment, and know where it was on the floor. Weiss was laid on her stomach, her body throbbing in pain, her face burning bright red in embarrassment.

She was beginning to have second thoughts, up until Ruby placed her hands on her ankles. Weiss yelped as she felt the ointment kick in, freezing cold on her skin as Ruby started to massage her sore muscles, feeling how Weiss' body reacted and adapting accordingly.

It hurt—possibly even more than if she had just laid awake all night, stiff and sore. Weiss yelped and whimpered, squirming and flinching, until Ruby finally found just the right amount of pressure, and things quickly turned around.

The soreness and stiffness in her body began to disappear. The ointment began to heat and left a pleasant, warm tingling on her skin, along with a minty and soothing scent. Soon, Weiss stopped flinching, squirming, and yelping, smiling in relief and humming in relief as Ruby finished up her legs.

“Feeling better, Weiss?” Ruby asked as she rubbed a fresh layer of ointment all over her hands.

“Yes...~” she moaned happily.

Ruby continued onto her back, Weiss began to doze off, until her hands happened to cross over a particularly sensitive part of her lower back.

Ruby stopped. “Weiss…?”

“Yes...?” Weiss squeaked back.

“You um, uh… made a noise.”

Weiss began to sweat. “What noise…?”

“It kinda sounded like--” Ruby made a poor imitation. “You okay…?”

“I'm fine!” Weiss squeaked.

“Are you really? Because I can--” Ruby stopped. She sniffed, then sniffed again a few more times.

Weiss' face felt like it was on fire—soul fire, as she could feel herself dying inside once more.

“Oooohh…” Ruby giggled as her hands continued their work. “Weiss, there's nothing to be ashamed about! We Fae aren't as weird about sex as you humans are—why are you like that for something so natural, anyway?”

Weiss bit back another “noise.” “I guess we're just weird like that...” she said through gritted teeth.

“Like with Nivian?” Ruby asked.

“Mmpff--!” Weiss stiffened up for a moment. “I mean: mhmm…!”

Ruby snorted, Weiss could feel her shaking her head. “I'll never get you humans...” she muttered as she applied some more ointment on her hands. “Oh, and Weiss?”

“What?”

“After I'm done, I can leave if you need time to, you know--” Ruby made a sexy animal noise. “I'll even hang a sock over the door so no one will walk in on you.”

Weiss mulled it over. “… No… no thanks, I'll… I'll manage…”

“Suit yourself!” Ruby said as she worked on her shoulders. “Offer still stands, though.”

Weiss bit her lip, hard. “Thanks, Ruby,” she whispered, as she began to doze off yet again, finally falling asleep again after Ruby turned her over on her other side.

Morning came, Penny knocked on their door before she opened it. “Good morning Ruby, Weiss! Sorry for barging in, but--”

She noticed Ruby and Weiss sleeping in the former's nest together. The former groggily got up, the latter kept on sleeping peacefully, clearly naked under the blanket that had been thrown over her for modesty's sake.

Penny kept on smiling as she slowly, carefully stepped and closed the door.

Later, that morning Weiss was back to tending to her garden, watering, weeding, and clipping. She looked up as she saw Penny coming up to her.

“Good morning, Weiss!” she said with a wave.

“Hey Penny—something up?” Weiss asked as she got up from the ground.

“Yes, actually!” Penny lowered her voice. “I noticed that you and Ruby have gotten intimate recently...”

Weiss blinked. “I'm sorry, what?”

“You know, the two of you--” Penny made a sexy animal noise.

Weiss face turned completely red in instant. “W-Wait, what?! No we didn't!”

Penny winked. “Of course you didn't~ Anyway, as your personal mender, I have to warn you to please wash both your hands before to minimize the risk of infection to either of you, manicure your nails frequently, and use plenty of lubrication!”

Weiss scowled. “No, seriously, we didn't do anything!”

Penny nodded, still smiling. “I should emphasize that that last point is extremely important: the human body was simply not designed to be able to handle the speed, intensity, and frequency that Fae are capable of, especially when incredibly aroused.”

Weiss just stared at her, simultaneously mortified and offended.

“Do not hesitate to ask me for any questions you may have!” Penny chirped softly. “Though the identities have been changed and obscured for privacy reasons, you and Ruby are not the first interspecies relationship in Fae history.”

Weiss sighed. “Thanks, Penny...” she grumbled.

“You're welcome, Weiss!” Penny said, winking one more time before she left.

Weiss finished up her garden work, and picked up her machete and ax. She was planning on skipping clearing the overgrowth today, but it looked like she was going to go hack some weeds and chop down some more trees after all...

Jeanne Lois Foulks McKechnie, 90, of Stonington went to be with the Lord Oct. 9, at home surrounded by her family. She was born Jeanne Lois Foulks, June 8, 1929, in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of the late Raymond and Georgina Foulks. She was the oldest of four siblings. She graduated from Bob Jones University in 1952. October 25, 1958, she married the late John G. McKechnie. Mr. McKechnie passed away in 2008. She was a fourth-grade teacher for several years until shortly before the birth of her first daughter, after which she became a full-time mother and homemaker. After moving to Connecticut, she was elected and served several terms on the Groton Republican Town Committee. She was a lifetime active member of Charity Chapter #61 Order of Eastern Star in Mystic, now Radiant Chapter #11 in Willimantic. Mrs. McKechnie was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Groton. She was a faithful, caring, and compassionate wife and mother who was known for the impeccable organization of her daily life. She loved reading, golf, and taking care of her family, home, and gardens. She is survived by a daughter, Jacquelynn Lawrence of Stonington, with whom she made her home; a daughter Karen Wescott of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter Beth Sweeney of Oakdale; four grandchildren, Jonathan Lawrence, Raymond Wescott, Colin Wescott, and Erin Sweeney; three great-grandsons, Jack Lawrence and Lochlann Wescott, and Noah Shane Subiono; a sister Linda Palmer of Davenport, Fla.; a brother Raymond T. Foulks, of Haslet, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. McKechnie was predeceased by her husband John McKechnie; a sister Barbara Peterson, and one grandson, Shane Sweeney. The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct their service at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vitas Hospice, 628 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury CT 06033.

I love that we have the choice of running water, we can watch funny things on TV, and with the press of 3 buttons our laundry does itself and comes out fresh and clean (sometimes). I love flushing the toilet and being able to stock my pantry with a few shopping trips at stores filled with pretty jars and brightly colored boxes. And the vacuum, God bless it, let us not forget the vacuum.

I’ve added a few other items to my life to bring some modern ease into my domestic duties; a bread maker from the Hospice thrift and…hum, well I guess that is it. I did get a handheld milk frother but that isn’t so modern. I guess when held up to say a Nescafe Dolce Gusto, it seems victorian.

I once dreamt of owning a Dolce Gusto coffee and latte machine. I had it on my Christmas list. With Christmas, my husband and I don’t get each other gifts. We indulge the children and I make candy and cookies for neighbors and friends. I cook for family as their gift. But this is a magical time that I adore and I usually grant myself a wish or two as a Christmas gift to myself. It is usually an item to decorate the home to make it more charming like a lovely quilt for the family bed or a kitchen gadget to bring more joy into the adults lives like a stovetop Italian espresso maker. I think that is fair and fine.

I love old fashioned things to use in my house. I use them mostly to force me to slow down and be present when cleaning or cooking. I learned this from the Amish. Not that I’ve ever been around them but I’ve read enough Amish fiction and philosophy to get what they are working at. A connection and communion with the Creator, Spirit. You must slow down and get very quiet to hear that the Universe has to share.

I percolate my coffee on the stove to smell the aroma waft through the house in the morning and I use a wooden broom to sweep my wooden floors. That was inspired by Tibetan monks. Don’t ask.

Modern technology was meant to make life easier but people are so busy now. Busier than an 1800’s farmer. They at least slowed down in the winter. Most people cram jam as much into a day and week and monthly schedule as possible. And most people are using liquor or pills to calm down. Interesting, right?

Why not mimic some of farmer grandma’s ways? Let’s take some of great grandma’s frugality and thrift from the Depression Era. Then borrow a little 1950’s housewife scheduling and work, add modern tools and voila!! You have a balanced, cozy, pleasant life.

Farmers used to go with the seasons. Maybe they still do but I read about the old days often so I don’t know what farm life is like today. I would think they went by the natural days light and each season had its specific chores and routines. They worked hard but all the work was for their family, their farms, their land, their homes. They worked long hours when it called for it and had slow days in between. Although the farmer’s work is ongoing and can be grueling, it is also natural. Farm work is done with the hands, takes focus and being in tune with the flow of seasons and the needs of creatures that depend on them, and it’s mostly outdoors in nature with sunshine, fresh air, and the domestic and wild critters. No long days under fluorescent lighting and ringing phones and instant messages, and constant dinging cell phones. The commute is to the barn, to the fields, back to the barn, to the house and repeat.

Depression Era, now here is a subject that has fascinated me lately. I had a book suggested to me ( We Had Everything But Money) that changed my whole perspective on what we really need and how to live simply to survive any financial crisis…or to just have a peaceful existence and not be a slave to money. You learn to wisely work with the money to best have it serve the families needs.

Depression Era homemakers were shrewd, wise, creative. They learned to work with very little, repurpose everything and anything that came into their home and how to be sustainable and resourceful. They made dresses from flour and sugar sacks, had kitchen gardens instead of lawns, and knew how to can any food imaginable. They made every penny count and wasted nothing. They were living greener than anyone in this day and age.

The 1950’s housewife was still making things from scratch and hand cranking the laundry but life was getting easier with washing machines, supermarkets, and vacuums. Now she didn’t need the kitchen garden and canning was already done at the factory. It was new gadgets and a car in the driveway. However, there was still a woman in the home and a focus on tending to the running of it and the care of the family.

Now we have everyone at work and school, after-school activities, long nights at the office, longer commutes, sports and extracurricular classes for the kids, quotas to meet, standardized testing, hours of homework, bringing work home…how depressing just thinking of it.

People were driven by simple living and dreams, family and faith. Now they are driven by money, pride, greed, a desire for titles, raises, promotions, and success.

Children are being driven beyond breaking and literally crazy by the pressure. I was reading in Free to Learn by Peter Gray, that suicides have quadrupled since the ’50s amongst children under 15 years old. And yet we still keep increasing the hours at school and homework and now most kids study during the summer. There is no play, no relaxing, no being a child.

And adults…where do I start? There is definitely not much fun or time for much of anything outside the job work and housework and running errands and taking the kids around to forced classes. And it is all for what in the end?

If you wound up on your death bed tomorrow, what would you think of this life? Would you still be thinking of the files on your desk at work and the laundry? Or would you luxuriate in sweet thoughts of the last few days with your family and playing in your garden or baking sweet bread in your kitchen?

All this hustle and bustle is for kids to get into that college and for us to get that raise or promotion. Then there is the desire for more money. But when is it enough and where do we stop and say, “that is just about right”. We don’t. We want more and more and more.

I see it on YouTube where I live part time myself with my vlog and researching canning and homesteading. Some vloggers are very successful but the more successful they become the fancier and fandangled they get and the YouTubers start selling things and promoting companies that sponsor them…even though they are making more than enough and talking about sustainability and simple living. Ha! We get greedy, it’s in our cells. We are hunters and gatherers by heart and we just keep collecting, consuming, gathering, pushing…

I was getting a bit driven myself and became irritable and didn’t have that much time for my children and play. Play? what is that, good Lord?

Then I deleted all my social media. Ahhh…that felt nice and a cool breeze swept through the valley. Then I stopped writing books at my corporate pace. I stopped forcing things and setting goals. I took up colored pens and filled the kiddie pool. I’m baking more bread, purging the house of clutter because I’m tired of cleaning and organizing “stuff”. Have I completely changed my life? No. I’m still figuring it out because I have been on a hampster wheel myself with working and producing.

But what is helping me find that sweet spot is my memories of our lives in Walnut Grove, when we lived on a fruit farm by the river. We had just moved there from our community by the coast and it was isolated. The town had less than 800 citizens and four miles away. The large town was a 40-minute drive if you wanted to purchase groceries or shop at Walmart or any super store. My husband worked long hours and six days a week. We had one car and walking anywhere was out of the question. The river road had no sidewalk and people drove wild and fast. The only place to walk was around the alfalfa fields or through the orchards. Trips to town were planned once a week. All my friends and family lived hours away now and I only had one elder named Alice to keep me company and help me adjust to life in a pear orchard and scorching hot days.

Alice and my family along with a vacation house for the owners of the farm were the only houses there. We listened to the thick chirp and chatter of birds in the morning and the howls and calls of coyote at night.

It was lonely but one of the most peaceful and pleasant times of our lives. I had small children that required nothing more than lots of love, nursing, and me sitting nearby as they played with sand toys and blocks. We had an antenna but didn’t watch much TV. We just had these slow days of hanging out. The babies played and explored with me just there to make sure they didn’t get into dangerous situations or eat too much sand and I read stacks of Amish fiction, made casseroles, baked treats, hung my clothes on the old clotheslines, and cleaned my home.

On a farm, you feel the full seasons. In the summer you have routines to keep the house cool such as opening and closing blinds with the suns direction, running the whole house fan, and doing chores early and taking walks in the evening. In the winter you get up early to build a fire to warm the house and you bake and cook a lot to keep the house warm. You rise with the sun naturally and go to bed soon after the sunset and cleaning the kitchen. You learn what fruits are in season when and pick them at the peak of ripeness. You only go to town once a week and you make it count.

I wasn’t working on a writing career or any other side work back then. I was just tending to my house and family and I had all the time in the world to read luxuriously under our huge olive tree. We used to take drives through the country and farms to explore our area in the summer evenings. Friends loved to visit because it was so calm and quiet. We would lounge about eating good foods and talking endlessly.

Today I’m busy by my own making of goals and challenges and the boys are bigger and full of energy. We have gardens and homeschooling. But I crave that slower life once again. So, I’m on a quest to downsize and remove all that isn’t bringing this family enjoyment or enhancing the quality of our lives. I purposely buy gadgets that slow the pace and I do things by hand or make food from scratch.

My suggestion is to clear the calendar, clear out the clutter, clear that schedule, try to reduce work so there are times you put in a long day and times you sit about reading all day. Find ways and reasons to work and play outside. All that cement and fluorescent lighting aren’t good for the soul. Stop signing your kids up for all those classes. What will make them smarter, happier, healthier, and more confident is having time to be children, to play freely and if you would just let them be.

As for you the working parent or homemaker…find ways to simplify and learn to savor life. Plant a kitchen garden, start making your own bread, take time to learn sewing or painting, can jam. These things are like a balm to the soul.

Rates of suicides amongst children and rates of depression and stress-induced death amongst adults are rising faster every year. It is a serious thing and it is self-induced to keep up with the trends and chase the almighty dollar. No title, no promotion, no amount of money will be worth all the lost years with family and friends, with your children…with yourself. Take back your life, scale down life to something small and delicious and find ways to save money and live smaller by growing your own food, canning, mending clothes, living under your means, having one car, getting rid of cable and whatever else to bring down the bills.

Trust me, the less you have the more you thrive if done wisely.

Homemaking like our grandmothers. I love that we have the choice of running water, we can watch funny things on TV, and with the press of 3 buttons our laundry does itself and comes out fresh and clean (sometimes).

Bobby Shoemaker, 90

Mr. Bobby Shoemaker, age 90 of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, February 14, 2020 at Arbor Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Lane Roark officiating.

Mr. Shoemaker was born March 15, 1929 in Wilkes County to Robert McKinley Shoemaker and Addie Mastin Shoemaker. He was a retired carpenter, first working for Foster Sturdivant Construction Company on projects that included the Reins-Sturdivant Chapel and Arbor Grove Baptist Church. He was also a brick and block mason and helped to build the racing garages for race car owner Junior Johnson in Ingle Hollow. He also worked alongside his two brothers to build many homes in Wilkes County. He loved to hunt and raised beagle dogs for many years. His greatest joy was his family and especially his grand and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Vecie Hall Shoemaker, his parents, two sisters R.V. (Robert Virginia) Bowman and Agnes Alexander, two brothers; Bruce Shoemaker and Edward (Dink) Shoemaker and a son-in-law; Mike Cannon.

Mr. Shoemaker is survived by two daughters; Lynn Shoemaker Dyer and husband Danny of Millers Creek, Diane Shoemaker Cannon of Wilkesboro, a son; Bobby F. Shoemaker and wife Pam of North Wilkesboro, four grandchildren; Robin D. Hamby and husband Matt, Amber C. Shumate and husband Andy, Ashley D. Cannon and fiance' Bobby Sheets and Adam P. Shoemaker, six great grandchildren; Aaron and Adrienne Hamby, Emeliegh and Ashlyn Shumate, Dawson and Gage Sheets, and a sister-in-law; Ruth Shoemaker, and his special friend and caregiver; Debbie Whitley.

Gene Stewart 89

Mr. Gene Ray Stewart age 89 of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, February 9 2020 at his home.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday February 12, 2020 at Welcome Home Baptist Church with Rev. Lyn Lambert, Rev. John Triplett, Rev. Jeff Collins, and Rev. Dean Crane officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:30 PM prior to the service at the church. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be held in Welcome Home Baptist Church Cemetery

Gene was born August 18, 1930 in Watauga County to Edward "Eddie" and Blanche Luther Stewart. He served in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Clevinger Business School. He retired from Holly Farms Poultry/Tyson Foods as a manager in the accounting department. Gene was a member of Welcome Baptist Church where he served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years.

Mr. Stewart was a member of the Silver Striders through the YMCA. He loved fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a faithful church member and was known for his mild mannered spirit. Gene was a Tarheel Fan and Braves Fan, and loved watching his grandkids involvement in sports. He enjoyed watching West Wilkes Basketball.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Faw Stewart, and two brothers, John Stewart, and Jimmy Stewart.

He is survived by a daughter Jeannie Stewart Stinson and husband Joel of North Wilkesboro, two sons, Stephen Ray Stewart and girlfriend Jayme Love of Statesville, and Reverend Dean Crane and wife Betty of Purlear, seven grandchildren Lucas Stinson, Jackson Stinson, Mackenzie and Christopher Stewart, Matthew Crane, Adam Crane, Josh Crane seven great grandchildren and three sister in-laws; Bonita Greene Stewart of Wilkesboro, Linda Stewart of Lenoir, and Babe Faw of Wilkesboro.

Jesse Church, 83

Jesse Carson Church, age 83, of North Wilkesboro, passed away, Saturday, February 8, 2020 at his home. Jesse was born April 11, 1936 in Wilkes County to George and Nettie Adams Church. He was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Church was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Albert, Marvin, Clayton and Richard Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Catherine Cooper Church; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Harvest Time Fellowship Church, 2865 Elkin Highway 268, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 with Rev. Tom Lineberger and Rev. Clarence Carty, 86

Mr. Clarence Ray Carty, age 86 of Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Accordius Health at Wilkesboro.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at Edgewood Baptist Church with Pastor Eddie Tharpe officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00PM prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Carty was born September 24, 1933 in Washington County, VA to Maiden and Ella Mae Holbrook Carty.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Valerie Teague, and a grandson, Jonathan Teague, and thirteen brothers and sisters.

He is survived by two sons; Jeffrey Lynn Carty and wife, Gigi of N.Wilkesboro and Timothy Ray Carty and wife, Vicki of North Wilkesboro, nine grandchildren; Misty Davis and Alex, Mindy Teague and Drew, Tasha Summerford and Dan, Christina Harrold and James, Shonna Davis, Tabitha Carty, Rebecca Minton and Anthony, Brandi Linville and Kenneth, Samantha Carty and Michael, and sixteen great grandchildren.

Raydell Blackburn, 80

Raydell Billings Blackburn, age 80, of Mulberry, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. Raydell was born March 18, 1939 in Wilkes County to John and Nellie Key Billings. Mrs. Blackburn was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley Billings Miles; and nephew, Ronnie Elmore.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde Blackburn; daughter, Karen Blackburn Earp and spouse George of Hickory; son, Brent Blackburn and spouse Erica of Mulberry; brother, Danny Billings of Mulberry; grandchildren, Julia Golden and spouse Matt, Justin Earp, Claire Earp, Olivia Blackburn, Lilly Blackburn; great grandchildren, Embry and Violet.

Yolande Caudill, 97

Mrs. Yolande Desmond Kerbaugh Caudill, age 97 of North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Villages of Wilkes.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 12 at Mountlawn Memorial Park with Dr. Bert Young officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home after the service.

Mrs. Caudill was born October 27, 1922 in Greenville, TN to John Thomas and Eula Leonard Kerbaugh. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro and a FBC choir member, was a member of the VFW Auxillary and the Crickett Home Demonstration Club. She was an expert seamstress, made the best yeast rolls, and was a crafter of Chrismons, displayed at FBC North Wilkesboro during the holidays.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Lee Caudill, Sr.; one sister, Vivian K. Greene; and three brothers, Shoun Kerbaugh, Glyn Kerbaugh, and Lyn Kerbaugh.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Caudill Adams and husband, Jack, of Clemmons; two sons, Thomas L. Caudill, Jr. and wife, Vickie, and James S. Caudill and wife, Joann, all of Wilkesboro; five grandchildren, Michael B. Caudill, Brian T. Caudill, Andrea A. Turner, Geoffrey T. Adams, and Sara A. Caudill; eight great-grandchildren, Matthew B. Caudill, Brandon A. Caudill, Brennen T. Caudill, Lilly Kate Turner, Savannah C. Turner, Madison G. Adams, Colton T. Adams, and Mila A. Morales; and one sister, Doris K. Bentley and husband, Jim.

Julie Minton, 50

Julie Christine Minton, age 50, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2020 at her home. Julie was born October 13, 1969 in Wilkes County to Thomas James "Johnny" and Mary Christine Bouchelle Call. Julie attended Cricket Baptist Church and was a loving mother to her sons. She was preceded in death by an infant brother; grandfather, Clarence C.J. Call; and uncle, Joey Call.

Surviving in addition to her parents of Wilkesboro; are her sons, Jonathon Marshall Minton, Joshua Austin Minton both of Hays; brother, David James Call of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Tammy Annette Shew and spouse Bodean, Sandy Ann Yates and spouse Keith all of North Wilkesboro; grandmother, Della Call of North Wilkesboro; nephews, Austin Shew and spouse Ashley, Michael Lane Bare all of Hays; nieces, Catherine Yates and Hope Yates both of North Wilkesboro; great nephew, Bentley Shew; aunts, Patricia, Joann, Janie, Gail, and Jeanette; and uncles, Jimmy and Jeff.

Teodulo DeLeon, 80

Mr. Teodulo Meza DeLeon, age 80 of North Wilkesboro passed away Thursday February 6, 2020 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston Salem.

Funeral Services were February 9, at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Father John Hanic officiating. Burial was at Scenic Memorial Gardens in Wilkesboro.

Mr. DeLeon was born February 17, 1939 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Gunercindo Meza and Severiana Meza DeLeon. He retired from Tyson Foods.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Felipa Meza, Antonia Meza and Cecilia Meza.

Mr. DeLeon is survived by his wife, Antolina DeLeon DeMeza of the home, four sons, Agustin, Natalio, Emeterio and Crispin Meza, six daughters, Ubalda, Catalina, Maria, Bertha, Carmen and Guadalupe Meza, twenty-seven grand-children, ten great grand-children, four sisters, Marciana, Marcela, Atanacia and Agapita Meza, two brothers, Crispin and Leopoldo Meza.

Darcie Call, 88

Mrs. Darcie Lee Minton Call, 88, of Wilkesboro, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Wilkes Medical Center.

Darcie was born on May 14, 1931 in Wilkes County to Ransom Edgar Minton and Connie Lee Parker Minton.

Darcie is survived by her daughters, Brenda Call Hooks (Len) of Chesnee SC, Phyllis Call Johnson (Bryce), Thricia Call Walter (Steve), Wanda Call Smith (Rick), all of Wilkesboro; sons, Ransom Call (Shirley) of Wilkesboro, Nelson Call (Laurie) of North Wilkesboro; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Funeral was February 9, at Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery with Rev. David Welborn officiating.

Mr. Randy Paul Osborne, 34, of North Wilkesboro, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.

Randy was born on June 25, 1985 in Wilkes County to Brian Tracy Osborne and Cathy Marie Fitzwater Osborne.

Randy is preceded in death by his grandparents, Lonnie and Rose Osborne, Samuel and Cordelia Fitzwater; aunts, Mary Moran, Donna Fitzwater and cousin, Jason Fitzwater.

Randy is survived by his parents Brian and Cathy Osborne.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Mamie Osborne, 91

Mamie "Nell" Osborne, formerly of N. Wilkesboro, is heaven bound after spending 91 years on earth as a loving daughter, sister, mother of five and grandma to many.

Nell was born in Wilkes County on June 30th, 1933, to Marion Frank Church and Daisy Agnus Milam Church during the Great Depression.

The red head was also known for her wit and spunk. Never did one have to guess what Nell was thinking. She was funny, but also exceptionally bright. She was an avid reader and writer. She documented many of her life stories and travels through her books and poems. She always had a word search, a good book and her Bible close at hand.

Her humor, kindness and selfishness will be remembered by all who came in contact with her during her 91 remarkable years.

A celebration of Nell's life will be held Friday, February 7th at Miller Funeral Service from 1-2 p.m. Family and friends are encouraged to come gather in her memory.

Peggy Taylor, 74

Peggy Ann Prevette Taylor, age 74, of McGrady, passed away, Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at her home. She was born June 7, 1945 in Wilkes County to Dewey Gaither and Hazel Johnson Prevette. Peggy was a graduate of Wilkes Central High School, was a Teacher's Assistant; and a school bus driver for Mulberry Elementary School. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Pamela Taylor West.

Surviving are her husband, Wallace Taylor; daughter, Mandy Wyatt and spouse Ricky of McGrady; grandchildren, Eric Brown and spouse Chelsea of Purlear, Evan Handy and spouse Victoria of Wilkesboro, Lauren Mitchell and spouse Ethan of North Wilkesboro; brothers, "Junior" Dewey Prevette and spouse Linda of Wilkesboro, Kenneth Prevette and spouse Sarah of Lewisville; sister, Kathy Williams and spouse Dean of North Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was February 7, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Key officiating. Burial followed in Taylor Cemetery in McGrady. The family has requested no food. Lawrence Pruitt, 86

Lawrence Allen Pruitt, age 86, of Traphill, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. Mr. Pruitt was born May 7, 1933 in Wilkes County, he was a son of the late Archie and Jettie Shaver Pruitt. Lawrence served in the Army and fought in the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Michael Allen Pruitt and Thomas Wayne Pruitt; and sister, Loreen Cockerham.

Jera Lee Parsons Wagoner, age 40 of North Wilkesboro passed away Monday, February 3, 2020.

David Dearman, 82

Mr. David Dewitt Dearman, age 82 of North Wilkesboro passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, February 3, 2020.

Funeral services were February 8, at Baptist Home Baptist Church with Rev. David Jones and Rev. Mark O. Hollar officiating. Entombment was in Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mr. Dearman was born April 28, 1937 in Wilkes County to Dewitt Talmadge and Rena Miller Dearman.

David married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn on December 18, 1955.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

David is survived by his wife of 64 years; Carolyn Johnson Dearman of the home, three daughters; Kimberly Dearman-Wilcox and husband Shaun of Oak Island, NC, Tamera Dearman Newton and husband Steve of North Wilkesboro and Kandice Dearman-West and husband Chris of Matthews, three grandchildren that he adored; Cameron David Newton, Joseph Stephen Newton and Kassidy Caroline Newton, special niece; Teresa Dancy Casey and his special dog; Duncan.

Wanda Montgomery, 87

Wanda Kay Harms Montgomery, age 87, of Mt. Airy, formerly of West Jefferson, passed away Monday, February 3, 2020 at Twelve Oaks Nursing Center.

She was born July 18, 1932 in Wilkes County to Harrison Columbus and Minnie Leola Brown Miller. Her DNA says she was a mixed of English, Wales, Germanic, European, Ireland, Scotland, and small percent of Native American.

Mrs. Montgomery was a great great great grand-niece of Daniel Boone. She moved to Savannah, Georgia in her early years and married William Harms Sr., then in 1972, she married Walter A. Montgomery, who was in the military and they traveled with their family all over the world and come to retire in Ashe County.

Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Keith M. Miller; and siblings, Thelma, Herman, Blanche, Beulah, Dorothy, Clyde. She will be missed by all.

Surviving are her husband, Walter A. Montgomery; her children, William S. Harms, Jr. and spouse Linda of Ellabell, Georgia, Lilly A. Harms of Vidalia, Georgia, Todd Stewart of Gainesville, Georgia; one grandson; and one great granddaughter

Frances Greene, 87

Mrs. Frances Curlee Greene, age 87 of Wilkesboro passed away Monday, February 3, 2020 at Wilkes Senior Village.

Mrs. Greene was born September 16, 1932 in Union County to Abraham M. and Lois Witmore Curlee. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro. Mrs. Greene graduated from Catawba College in 1953. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker and loved art and music.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Edward Franklin Greene, a son; Richard Edward Greene and a daughter; Katherine Ann Greene.

She is survived by one son; Stephen Brian Greene and wife; Vanya of Wilkesboro, four grandchildren; Matthew Greene of Sarasota, FL, Trevor Greene of North Wilkesboro, Trenton Greene and Lindsay Greene both of Wilkesboro and one great grandchild; Lillian Katherine Greene.

Ronald "Ronnie" Darrell Hamby, age 62, of Deep Gap, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. He was born August 24, 1957 in Wilkes County to Sherman Garfield and Gladys Hicks Hamby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Ryan Hamby; and brother, Donald Hamby.

Surviving are his wife, Claudine Billings Hamby; daughters, Felicia Griffin and spouse Rodney of Wilkesboro, Jessica Brown and spouse Robbie of Millers Creek, Melissa Kay Lewis of Caldwell County; sons, Brad Samuel Hamby of Caldwell County, Ronnie Andrew Hamby of Florida; brothers, Calvin Hamby and spouse Loretta of Purlear, Robert Hamby and spouse Norma of Burke County, Greg Hamby of Greensboro; sisters, Sharon Duncan and spouse Jake of Sawmills, Carolyn Hamby of Crumpler, Nancy Walters and spouse Donnie of North Wilkesboro; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Ronald Canter 71

Mr. Ronald Gray "Ron" Canter age 71 of Wilkesboro passed from this life to his eternal home February 1, 2020 surrounded in peace and love by his family.

Ron was born November 2, 1948 to Hubert Alton and Gozeal McNeil Canter. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. Ron obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Appalachian State University.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother James Alton Canter.

Ron is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Church Canter, of the home; two daughters - April Canter Greenwood and husband Charlie, and Alison Canter Moore and husband Chris; four grandchildren: Hollie Gray Moore, Mitchell Joseph Moore, Charles McNeil "Mac" Greenwood, John Edwin "Win" Greenwood all of Winston-Salem; One brother Kenneth Canter and wife Carol of Wilkesboro; One sister Patty Broyhill of Taylorsville; Nieces and Nephews Jeff Canter, Richard Canter, Susan Canter Boyles, Steve Canter, Gary Broyhill, Janet Broyhill Sherrill, Sandra Broyhill Hawkins, and many special great-nieces and great-nephews.

A private memorial prayer service will be held with wife, children and grandchildren.

Patients Who Have a Life Expectancy of Six Months or Less

Cindy: We met November 1976. It was the grand opening of Standing Room Only, a little three-two bar up in Oak Grove. It was a Monday evening. He asked me to dance, and he hates to dance. So, we had that first dance, and here we are, from 1976 until now – married 33 years, so, 35 years later.

Norman: I was diagnosed in ’96. I’d gone to the VA, and I believe the doctor said I had some sort of lung problem. That’s when I went to my regular doctor, got diagnosed.

[My cancer was] job induced. I’m a retired bricklayer. It’s from all the dust and stuff that you’re breathing in on job sites.

Hospice care is intended for patients who have a life expectancy of six months or less, if their illness runs its natural course. Provided in the patient’s home, hospice is designed to relieve the patient of physical discomfort, provide emotional and spiritual support, and prepare the patient for a natural death. But hospice is also family-centered, offering support and information for loved ones and caregivers. Patients are eligible for hospice once it is determined that life expectancy is limited and they choose to control their symptoms without the expectation of prolonging life.

Cindy: It was in December, was then when he started with the oxygen. And then I started with Allina Health Hospice as a nurse, and so I gained better understanding of qualifying, and he and I talked about it. Sleep was an issue, laying flat is an issue. So, we ended up talking about it and pursued the hospice component for him. It made sense.

Norman: It made real good sense.

Brianna: I think the biggest thing is to make sure that people do understand that there’s just so much available with hospice that it’s a shame if you wait until the very last days to be able to utilize the program. It’s not just for the loved one who’s needing that care, but for the family as well. You know, there’s so much, and they are such compassionate people who work with the program. It’s an amazing, amazing program. There’s so much available to the patients and to the families, so it’s a shame if it’s not utilized sooner rather than later.

Hospice care is coordinated by a team of health care professionals skilled in providing patients and families with a wide range of support services. Together with patients and families, the hospice care team develops a plan of care with the patient’s doctor that honors the goals, values, and wishes of each individual.

Brianna: When he was admitted into hospice, the nurse that he had admitting him did a phenomenal job of answering any questions. And she made sure that we were all aware of all the different resources that were available, not just to him but to us as well — as family. So, it was educational. I being a nurse, have some background knowing a little bit about hospice. But my brother and my dad’s sister were both here, and they don’t know anything about the medical field. So, it was very nice having that information. And it’s just nice knowing that there is the support, that when we need it, that it’s there for us as well, not just for my dad.

Once a plan of care is determined, hospice provides the necessary resources for pain and symptom management.

Cindy: It’s typically such a defined stereotype word – that you have less than, probably, two weeks to live. Because that’s usually – people don’t usually reap the benefits. But the benefit of pain control that hospice can provide when you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness is unbelievable.

Norman: Yeah, there isn’t any reason to be in pain. That’s one thing, you know…basically pain free. And, you know, it’s the first time in years I’ve been without pain and been able to sleep longer at night than before.

Hospice care is covered by most insurers, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers.

Brianna: What I didn’t realize is all of the equipment that’s available to patients, and medications, things that are covered, that the family doesn’t have to worry about the cost of it. And that’s such a huge stress on anybody with health care is the cost. So, I mean, I think that’s a really big deal, and it’s amazing to not have to worry about that, to have my dad be able to have a hospital bed so he can sleep comfortably. You know, to have him have the oxygen and have the medications that help him be comfortable. For us to not have to worry about that is really huge. I mean, it takes some very big stress off of us as a family.

Above all, hospice is about quality of life, however limited life expectancy may be. Norman: Don’t think of hospice as the last days of your life. Think of it as freedom, and being able to be without pain, and do things that you want to do. I like to hunt and fish and just be outside, enjoying nature.

Cindy: Go out for breakfast with the guys, or sit outside and start a campfire.

Norman: Yeah, start the campfire. And it’ll be time to plant the garden here pretty quick.

Ben: You can’t stop him. I mean, you try to say no but he’s just gonna do it. That’s how he is and, you know, he’s gonna do it, and he’s able to do it in comfort now. So, that’s huge in my eyes. I think the biggest thing is just being with his grandkids.

Norman: Samantha and Camryn spend quite a bit of time here, and I do things with both of them. I’ve taught them both how to ride their bikes without training wheels. And the last two years they’ve picked out the flowers that we’ve put in the garden, and everything turned out great. Yeah, I have Sara. She goes where I go.

Cindy: British Lab. And the British Labs have a sense. They just kinda…they kinda know Norman: And her and I bonded right from day one.

Norman: There’s nothing wrong with being on hospice. You can still do everything you were able to do before, there’s no limitations – other than the limitations you put on yourself. And I don’t put limitations on myself. I haven’t given up anything that I’ve done. As long as I’m able to do it, I’m going to continue to do it.

Cindy: It’s a journey we’re all taking together but each on our own path.

Frances Gay, 99

Mrs. Frances Allie Curtis Brendle Gay, age 99 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020, at Rose Glen Manor in North Wilkesboro.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 30, 2020 in the fellowship hall of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Brady Hayworth and Rev. Phil Chapman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 prior to the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gay was born January 17, 1921 in Wilkes County to Joel Curtis and Grace Viola Parsons Curtis. She retired from Wilkes Hosiery and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Frances lived served and honored the Lord her family and her community until God called her home at the age of 99.She was a second mother to her brothers and sisters and had a work ethic to provide. Frances read the Bible through 30+ times and was a former Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

She loved her care from her Home and family at Rose Glen Manor. She was known for her quick sense of humor and her strong independence. Frances loved spending time with her family and working crossword puzzles. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband; Ed Brendle and second husband; Lathian W. Gay, a sister; Grace Vaught, two brother; Junior Curtis and Edwin Curtis and a brother in law; Fred Ferguson.

She is survived by a sister; Helen Ferguson of Millers Creek and two brothers; Basil Walker and wife Gail of Hilton Head Island, SC and Bobby Walker and wife JoAnn of Wilkesboro, two sister in laws; Maxie Curtis of Millers Creek and Lou Curtis of Elkton, FL, a stepson; David Brendle and wife Frances of Greensboro and many nieces and nephews.

Denise Eller, 63

Denise Eller, age 63, of Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. Denise was born February 7, 1956 in Wilkes County to George H. Eller, Jr. and Oma Jean Mitchell Eller. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Denise loved to attend all the youth sports teams, attending all the games she was able. She was a big North High Vikings and a Carolina Tarheels basketball fan. Denise loved her cats and had a special love for all cats. Ms. Eller was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her Aunt, Dare Cothren of Thomasville; Lots of Cousins; life-long friend, Pam Rhoades of North Wilkesboro; and her loving cat, Tempe.

Funeral service was January 28, at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Donnie Shumate officiating and eulogy by Randy Rhoades. Burial followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Gladys Wilma Greer Gilbert, age 94 of Wilkesboro, widow of Bobby Gilbert, died Friday, January 24, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health - Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services was January 27, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial was in the Full Gospel Mission Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Gilbert was born March 1, 1925 in Watauga County to Albert and Rebecca Carlton Greer.

Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby Gilbert; seven sisters, Edna Hampton, Maggie Clawson, Lily Triplett, Ora Watson, Bernice Cox, Ruth Miller, and Melba Hayes; and four brothers, Virgil Greer, Sherman Greer, Vaughn Greer, and Bynum Greer.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Greene Keels and husband, Edward, of Wilkesboro; her son, Bill Greene and wife, Christine, of Wilkesboro; her four grandchildren, Debbie Blevins, Sandra Mastin, Lisa Austin, and Scott Keels; six great-grandchildren, Richard Shew, Zack Blevins, Patrick Blevins, Kayla Bennett, Chris Mastin, and Natasha Brown; and five great-great-grandchildren, Aliza Blevins, Forest Mastin, Finley Mastin, Tyler Brown, and Tristan Blevins.

Mr. Ransome Joe Patrick, Jr. age 64 of Hamptonville, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2020 at his home.

Mr. Patrick was born June 1, 1955 in Wilkes County to Ransome Joe Patrick, Sr. and Oma Kathleen Smithey. He was the Vice President of Operations for Spevco, Inc. and a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother; Charles Patrick.

Robert Vaught, 85

Mr. Robert James Vaught, age 85 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at his home.

Graveside services with Military Honors by the United States Army and Veterans of Foreign Wars was January 25, at Mountlawn Memorial Park with United States Army Chaplin officiating.

Mr. Vaught was born February 9, 1934 in Rural Retreat Virginia. He was retired from the United States Army after serving 20 years as a Platoon Tank Sargent during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. Mr. Vaught was an active member of the NRA and the VFW Post 1142 and retired teamster's long haul truck driver.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Johnnie Culler Vaught and a sister; JoAnn Bess.

He is survived by a daughter; Regina Dawn

Mrs. Young was born February 12, 1955 in Davenport, IA to Evett Jerome and Shirley Mae Shoemaker.

Mr. Kyle Gentry Bumgarner, 77, of Millers Creek, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.

Kyle was born on July 2, 1942 in Wilkes County to James Talmadge Bumgarner and Virchew Yates Bumgarner.

Kyle is preceded in death by his parents, step mother Odessa Pilkenton Bumgarner; brothers, JR, Howard, Wayne, Jim, Hobert Bumgarner; sisters, Ruth Bumgarner, Lois McGuire and Hazel Eller.

Kyle is survived by: his wife of 44 years, Betty Jean Wyatt Bumgarner; daughter, Sally Marshall and husband, Nick of Millers Creek; grandchildren, Keila Marshall of Louisana, Logan Eller of Moravian Falls, and Austin Marshall of Millers Creek.

The family conducted a memorial service at Union Baptist Church in Millers Creek with Rev. Steve Faw officiating.

Edna Key Blackburn Watson, age 96, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Westwood Hills Nursing and Rehab Center. Edna was born August 19, 1923 in Wilkes County to Clarence C. and Oma Haynes Key. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church for many years. Edna loved making crafts, doing puzzles and walking. She worked for 30 plus years and retired from Modern Globe as an inspector. Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Senter Blackburn; her second husband, Paul Watson; brothers, Raymond Key, Ransom Key, Henry Key; and sisters, Betty Key and Ruth Absher.

Surviving are her sisters, Margie Shepherd, Mazie Miller, Virginia Dancy all of North Wilkesboro; brother, J.C. Key and spouse Marie of Greensboro; step-sons, Jimmy Watson and Larry Watson; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was January 23, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Pastor Donnie Shumate, Rev. Marvin Blackburn and Pastor Gene Shepherd officiating. Burial followed in Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Martha Nichols, 78

Martha Marler Nichols, 78, died Sunday morning at Mountain Valley Hospice in Yadkinville, NC, January 19 of cancer, surrounded by her family. She was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, cousin, grandmother and friend. Martha was born and grew up in Winston-Salem, NC the daughter of Ralph H. Marler and Jeanne Lalance Marler, a member of First Presbyterian Church, attended RJ Reynolds High School, and then Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She married James P. Barksdale, JR of Rocky Mount, NC, a Presbyterian minister in 1962 and lived in Kannapolis, NC, Charlotte, NC, and North Wilkesboro, NC with churches that he was called to serve. After his death in 1981, Martha married Ward H. Nichols, a renowned artist and returned to live in North Wilkesboro, NC.

From the beginning of her adult life as a Presbyterian minister's wife, Martha was a devoted supporter of her husband and his career, but she also had outside interests and took art and history courses while in Charlotte and North Wilkesboro. An artist herself, she taught watercolor and drawing classes at Wilkes Community College, volunteered at the Wilkes Art Gallery and became the gallery's director in 1976. Following this work, Martha served as the Director of ExperienceWorks, the Director of Retired Senior Volunteers Program, a Commissioned Realtor with Caldwell Banker and Apple Realty, and lastly as the Marketing Director of Rose Glen Manor, the organization from which she retired.

When Martha's mother died, she became a consummate gardener to work through her grief and before limitations in her mobility, had over 200 roses in her garden, was an award-winning master rosarian and was a member of the Winston-Salem Rose Society and American Rose Society. Valentine's Day would signify the delivery of her roses to many friends and loved ones throughout Wilkes, Caldwell, and Forsyth Counties. Also inspired by her mother's lifelong hobby of quilting, Martha became more than an avid quilter, making over 50 quilts and prayer blankets, most of which she gave to friends in celebration of a joyous occasion, or to friends who faced serious or terminal illnesses.

In fact, Martha sought out people who were experiencing terminal illness, becoming their friend and counselor, and providing whatever comfort she could give. In 1980 when her first husband was diagnosed with cancer, Martha created what she called a home-grown hospice program since hospice was not yet widely available. This led to her contributions towards hospice in Wilkes County, culminating in 1984, first with a speech and presentation to a group of clergy from western NC and subsequently to another group of oncologists in the area. She became well known for her lecture, "The Impact of Cancer on the Family Unit: Psychological and Theological Emphasis" and sharing her experiences were instructive in enhancing their understanding.

The arts helped bring Martha and Ward together, and Martha's life with Ward provided another ongoing connection to the arts. Ward claims that Martha was his biggest advocate and supporter, often naming his paintings and providing constructive feedback. She also managed the business affairs of his work, helping to organize most of his shows and always serving as a consummate host to out of town guests and collectors. They were married for more than 35 years, and their lives included an international trip almost every year and to every state in the continental US. Ward and Martha were members of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church and attended regularly, and Martha served as an Elder and on the membership and personnel committees. Martha's involvement in the community was extensive, and she was particularly proud of Vision2020, a long-range planning effort in Wilkes County during the 1990's. Ward and Martha also frequently visited Charleston, SC, West Virginia and Isle of Palms, where Martha's children would join them for a week at the beach.

While Martha had a full career and many interests and hobbies, she would claim her most important accomplishment was her family, with her first husband, Jim Barksdale and their three children, and then her marriage with Ward Nichols, which coincided in time with the arrival of her four grandchildren. Martha created an intimate family whose members have always deeply supported each other, teaching them how to love and to cherish, particularly during difficult times. Her values were very clear, she was a fervent advocate for the underprivileged, and donated her time and money to the homeless and the poor. Several causes stand out; she created the Ralph H. Marler, JR Award for the Wilkes Art Gallery in memory of her brother, and the Katie Fund for the Wilkes Animal Hospital in memory of her beloved cocker spaniel.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. James P Barksdale, JR and her brother, Ralph H Marler, JR. She is survived by her husband, Ward H Nichols; and her three children, James P Barksdale III, Elisabeth S Barksdale (Laura E Clay), and grandson, Kip H Barksdale, John M Barksdale (Katina M Barksdale), and grandchildren, Ellis A Barksdale, Finn P Barksdale, and Catherine M Barksdale.

A memorial service will be held on February 1 at 2:00pm, at the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, with a celebration of life to immediately follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any shelter for the homeless, or to one of the funds inspired by Martha.

Thomas Eaton, 69

Mr. Thomas Frederick Eaton, age 69 of Kernersville passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral services were, January 24, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 wasin Scenic Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Eaton was born June 12, 1950 in New Jersey to Henry J. and Regina K. Eaton. Mr. Eaton served in the United States Air Force from 1972 until 1980. He loved airplanes, the beach, Bugs Bunny, Disney World, his cats; Stars and Stripes, his family and friends. It seemed later in life his biggest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He was formerly employed by RF Micro Devices.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife; Kathleen E. Yeashvich Eaton and his second wife: Cynthia Diane Eaton.

He is survived by sisters; Mary Anne Eaton, Susan J Locker and husband John, nephews; Eric J. Sneath, Christopher T. Sneath and wife Laurie, niece; Megan A. Locker, great niece; Sianna J. Sneath, sister-in-law; Joan Beem and niece; Karolyn B. Turcotte and husband Andre and their children; Sebastian and Sydney, step-daughter; Crystal Keener and husband Bucky, step-son; Jody Barbour and wife Anita and grandchildren; Kris, Harley, John, Olive, Emily, Gus and Charlie.

Edward Brown, 44

Mr. Edward Kenneth "Kenny" Brown, 44, of Wilkesboro, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020.

Kenny was born on March 27 1975 in Wilkes County to Kenneth Edward Brown and Shirley Louise Martin Brown.

Kenny is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kimberly Dare Brown.

Kenny is survived by his sisters, Dawn Stanley (Ronnie) of N.Wilkesboro, Donna Byers of Wilkesboro; nieces, Shana Dollar (Robert), Melissa McGinty all of North Wilkesboro; nephew, Michael Byers (Olyvia) of Wilkesboro and good close friend Vera Vickers of Hickory.

The family conducted a memorial service January 25, at Westwood Hills Nursing Facility.

Retha Johnson 75

Mrs. Retha Ann Johnson age 75 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Villages of Wilkes.

Funeral services were October 1, at Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Hays with Rev. Jamie McGuire officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson was born August 28, 1944 in Wilkes County to Robert (Bob) Judson Johnson and Vallie Ester Blevins Johnson. She was a lifelong member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Hays.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister; Sue Johnson Pruitt, a sister in law; Grace Johnson and a brother in law; Bill Blevins.

She is survived by two daughters; Sherry Hall Wallace and husband George of Franklinton and Sandra Hall McGuire and husband Jamie of Millers Creek, five grandchildren; Cassandra McGuire, Tori Wallace Cortez and husband Johnny, Alix Wallace, Colin Wallace and Nikki Wallace, a sister; Mary Ellen Blevins of North Wilkesboro, two brothers; Rev. Mary Sheppard, 71

Mary Lou Lunsford Sheppard, age 71, of Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, September 27, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. She was born June 21, 1948 in Wilkes County to Grover and Maie Hendren Lunsford. Mrs. Sheppard was a member of Cub Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Bower Sheppard; granddaughter, Kayla Dubuque; grandson, Anthony Sheppard; brother, Coy Lunsford; and sister, Pauline Jarvis.

Surviving are her children, Beth Wood and spouse Jeff of North Wilkesboro, Mary Sales and spouse Donald of Ronda, Billy Sheppard and Kim Young both of Wilkesboro, Shane Sheppard and spouse Shelia of Purlear; grandchildren, Alicia Wood, Curtis Wood, Nicole Gwyn, Bill Hairston, Donavan Sheppard, Catlin Foster, Mason Foster; sisters, Irene Johnson and spouse Commie of Moravian Falls, Juanita Greene of Mulberry; brothers, Clyde Lunsford and spouse Debra of Moravian Falls, Billy Lunsford and spouse Vicie of North Wilkesboro; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

John Robinson, 47

John Paul (J.P.) Robinson, age 47, of Ferguson, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019. Mr. Robinson was born May 16, 1972 in Wilkes County to Johnny Wake and Ettie Sue Watts Robinson. J.P. loved fishing, cooking, old cars and shooting guns. Most of all he loved his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Faith Robinson; his mother; sister, Sandra Wyatt; and a brother, Ronald Robinson.

Surviving are his sons, Jessie Lee Robinson and spouse Haleigh and Darrell Lee Knight all of Millers Creek; his father, Johnny Wake Robinson of Millers Creek; sister, Linda Robinson of Millers Creek; brother, Fred Allen Robinson and spouse Vallerie of Millers Creek; several nieces and nephews; and his fur baby, Tink.

Mrs. Hallie Christine Bullis Church, age 82 of Boomer, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Westwood Hills Nursing.

Mrs. Church was born December 8, 1936 in Wilkes County to Mamie Lee Adams Bullis. She was retired from Charmette Beauty Salon where she worked as a Hairdresser. Mrs. Church was a member of New Light #2 Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, her first husband; Walter Church, and a son; Kimberly Dale Church.

She is survived by her husband; Buford Nichols of the home, three sons; Kevin Church and wife Geneva of Millers Creek, Lang Derwin Church and wife Linda of Millers Creek and Scott Dowell Church and wife Patsy of Millers Creek, six grandchildren; Shannon Church, Tasha Wdowiak and husband Andrew, Walter Church and wife Jessica, Nathan Church, Matthew Church and Daniel Church, three great grandchildren; Westson Wdowiak, Aubrey Wdowiak and Kyle Church, a sister; Crystal Roberts and husband Doug of North Wilkesboro and two brothers; Harvey Bullis and wife Brenda of Hickory and Ricky Bullis of Millers Creek.

Mrs. Mary Frances Jenkins Wyatt age 74 of Purlear, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services were September 27, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Timothy Wayne Moose, Jr., Rev. Tommy Brown and Rev. Onnie Langley officiating. Burial was in Scenic Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Wyatt was born May 4, 1945 in Ashe County to Conley and Effie Darnell Jenkins. Mary was a devoted pastor's wife for 40 years, was a loving mother, grandmother and a friend to all. She was a member of Church of God of Prophecy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Wyatt is survived by her husband; Rev. Roy Hampton Wyatt whom she was a faithful wife to for 58 years, three daughters; Lisa Wyatt Smith and husband, Dexter of Ash, Anita Wyatt Caldwell and husband Timothy of North Wilkesboro and Valerie Wyatt Key and husband Matthew of Millers Creek, twelve grandchildren; Timothy Wayne Moose, Jr., Daniel Lee Moose, Laura Michelle Smith, Matthew Forrest Prevette, Jennifer Ashley Key, Andrea Nicole Moose, Emilee Faith Prevette, Joshua Garrett Mosteller, Madison Lynn Caldwell, Brianna Hope Key, Landon Michael Caldwell and Carrie Ann Alyssa Key, six great grandchildren; Jordan Alan Miller, Philip Matthew Moose, Hunter Lee Moose, Liam Matthew Prevette, Samuel Ryan Moose and Jeremiah Wayne Moose, a sister; Midge Allen and husband Jim of Millers Creek and a brother; Roger Jenkins and wife Lola of Hiddenite.

Alma Wiles, 94

Alma Elledge Wiles, age 94, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. Alma was born May 24, 1925 in Wilkes County to James Spencer and Lura Harrold Elledge. She was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Moravian Falls and was previously employed with Martin Marietta Aviation and Missile Builders as a secretary. Mrs. Wiles was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Franklin Wiles, Jr.; siblings, Cecil Elledge, Lexie Fraiser, Ruth Ledbetter and Faye Elledge; and nephew, Dennis Fraiser.

She is survived by her nieces, Deborah Fuller and Kellie McLaughlin; and nephew, James S. Elledge.

Graveside service was September 27, at Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Jackie Leonard Rogers, Jr. better known as Little Jack, age 34 of Purlear passed away September 23, 2109 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Rogers was born February 6, 1985 in Concord North Carolina. He was a Brick Mason by trade. Mr. Rogers was a member of Purlear Baptist Church.

Mrs. Geraldine Brooks Rhodes, age 73 of Hays passed away Monday, September 23, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Rhodes was born May 11, 1946 in Wilkes County to Amos Brooks and Lettie Billings Brooks. She was a Homemaker and Poultry Farmer and a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church. Geraldine was a loving Wife, Mother and Grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters; Gladys Wood and husband Eli, Hazel Brooks, Edna West and husband Royal, two brothers; Arvie Brooks and Garness Brooks and a brother in law; Daniel Brown.

She is survived by her husband of fifty five years Otto Lonnie Rhodes, Jr. of the home, two daughters; Lisa Rhodes Hall and husband James of Ferguson, Denise Rhodes Wilson and husband Rick of Hays, five grandchildren; Joshua Hall, Nathan Hall, Elizabeth McCann and husband Brigg Adams, Rebekah Wilson and Reece Wilson, a sister; Arlene Brown of Salisbury and three brothers; Harlis Brooks and wife Darsie of Winston Salem, Jerry Brooks of Roaring River, Roger Brooks and wife Barbara of Roaring River and two sister in laws; Annie Ruth Brooks and Shirley Brooks.

Susan Holland, 65

Mrs. Susan Love Holland, age 65, of Conover went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Susan was born on December 24, 1953 in Statesville. Her father, Larry Edward Love (L.E.) preceded her in death.

Susan was a graduate of Wilkes Community College and worked for several years in North Wilkesboro in banking and data processing. Until her illness became too advanced, Susan worked at Connections, a psychosocial, rehabilitation clubhouse of Catawba Valley Behavioral Health Care, an ongoing community support program in Hickory. Susan contributed much to the Clubhouse and designed, edited and produced a monthly newsletter for the community. Known for her generous heart, Susan was a loving daughter, devoted mother, caring sister and kind spirit.

She is survived by her mother, Geraldine Love of North Wilkesboro; her son, Eric Holland of Greenville; three brothers, Steve Love of North Wilkesboro, Roger Love of Salisbury, and Randy Love of Rockingham; a sister, Dr. Sandra Swaringen of Wilkesboro; two nieces, Dr. Shanna Swaringen of Chapel Hill, Dr. Megan Swaringen of North Wilkesboro; and four nephews, Bradford Love of Knightdale, Wesley Love of Salisbury, Andrew Love of Raleigh and Brian Love of Rockingham.

A private graveside service was held on August 26, 2019 at Arbor Grove Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro with Pastor and Friend Michelle Staley officiating. Memorials may be made to Arbor Grove Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro or to Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home. Miller Funeral Service kindly served the family with compassion, comfort and support.

Mary Lovette, 78

Mary Jo Lowe Lovette, 78, of Moravian Falls, died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 23, 2019.

She was born Aug. 25, 1941, in Wilkes County to Perry Roosevelt Lowe Sr. and Mary Revis Lowe. She graduated from Pembroke State University with a degree in home economics and taught school in Wilkes County for 20 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 40 years and Daughters of the American Revolution for 27 years. She was lover of genealogy and was often called the Lowe family historian.

She was a long-time member of the Moravian Falls Methodist Church until its closure and spent her final days as a member of the Reformation Lutheran Church in Taylorsville.

She was preceded in death by three older brothers: Clyde R. Lowe, Perry R. Lowe Jr. and Caney Lowe.

She is survived by a daughter, Revis (Ann) Lovette Felts and husband Todd of Wilkesboro; son, David E. Lovette Jr. and wife Kim of Hope Mills, N.C.; and five grandchildren: David E. (Ty) Lovette III, Ben Lovette, William Lovette, Meredith Felts and Olivia Felts.

Memorial service was Sunday, Sept. 29 at Miller Funeral Home Chapel in North Wilkesboro.

Mr. Timothy Odell Teague, age 60 of North Wilkesboro, died Friday, September 20, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health - Wilkes Medical Center.

Mr. Teague was born July 24, 1959 in Wilkes County to Clint Isaac and Dessie Marie Handy Teague.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clint Isaac Teague.

He is survived by his mother, Dessie Marie Handy of Hays; his son, Gary Teague and wife, Christina, of North Wilkesboro; his grandchild, Kendall Teague; his three sisters, Diana Kilby and husband, Larry, of Roaring River, Nina Bozeman and husband, Billy, of Wilkesboro, and Darlene Patrick of Virginia; and his three brothers, Denny Teague and wife, Debbie, of North Wilkesboro, David Teague of Hays, and Curtis Teague and wife, Myra, also of Hays.

Mary Frances Greene Lovette, age 75, of Millers Creek, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at her home. Mary was born November 15, 1944 in Wilkes County to Coolidge Edmond and Ella Mae Staley Greene. She attended Old Fashion Baptist Church. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.C. Lovette; daughter, Mary Darlene Lovette; grandson, Jacob Ellis.

Surviving are her daughter, Brenda Combs of Millers Creek; grandchildren, Alicia Ellis, Floyd Combs both of Millers Creek, Lindsey Combs of Raleigh; brother, Archie Greene and spouse Celia of Cricket; sisters, Edna McGuire and spouse Floyd of Wilkesboro, Nancy Harless and spouse John, Kathy Huffman and spouse Brent all of Millers Creek; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Winstead was born February 9, 1926 in Randolph County to Causey J. Davidson and wife Jessie Lewallen Davidson. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; W.E. (Willie) Winstead and her five sisters and brothers.

She is survived by two daughters; Pam Lenderman and husband Keith of Wilkesboro and Sue Teague and husband Jeff of Wilkesboro, two grandchildren; Kelly Lenderman Plumley and husband, John Ryan Plumley of Mt. Holly, NJ, and Meredith Pennington Wingler and husband Dustin Wingler of Wilmington, NC and two great granddaughters; Drew Willa Plumley and Emma Lilly Plumley. A special friend and sister in law; Doris Davidson of Randleman and several nieces.

David Gambill, 76

David Paul Gambill, age 76, of Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center-Wilkes Regional. Mr. Gambill was born June 6, 1943 in Wilkes County to Buel "Buck" and Paulene Bumgarner Gambill. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; numerous aunts and uncles.

Surviving are his son, Sherman Buel Gambill and spouse Jessica of Cary; grandson, Camron Gambill of Cary; half-brother, Jerome Gambill and spouse Jennifer of Elkin; aunt, Carol Shirley Triplett of Wilkesboro; uncles, Robert Gambill and Russell Gambill of North Wilkesboro; nieces, Grace Elizabeth and Lily Hope Gambill; and multiple cousins throughout Wilkes, surrounding counties and other states.

Mr. Gambill enlisted in the United States Navy and completed boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Base where he looked forward to serving his country before receiving an honorable medical discharge.

Throughout his life, Mr. Gambill worked in several careers alongside his father and uncles at Gambill Brother's Construction Company, in grading, building and concrete finishing before also working at Hobe's Ham. He retired from Abitibi-Price and later returned to part-time work at Lowes Foods.

Mr. Gambill enjoyed being with family and friends, Sunday dinners at both of his grandparent's houses, reading, history, astronomy, science fiction, westerns, classic movies, classic cars and NASCAR. He was a strong advocate of caring for those in need and for rescuing and loving animals.

Graveside service was January 20, at Mountlawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Sparks officiating. Pallbearers were Jerome Gambill, Chad Gambill, Steve Johnson, James Elledge, Tony Durham and David Ledford. The family would like to thank the following group of professionals who gave great care and respect to Mr. Gambill; Dr. Tomas Vybiral and staff at Blue Ridge Cardiology, attending physicians and staff at Hugh Chatham Hospital, attending physicians and staff at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, Dr. Harsh Barot and staff at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center-Wilkes Regional, Mountain Valley Hospice, and numerous other caregivers. Ethel Owens, 99

Ethel Elizabeth Owens, age 99, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020 at Wilkes Senior Village. Mrs. Owens was born September 1, 1920 in Wilkes County to Everette and Polly Garris. Ethel loved cooking and sewing. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John P. Owens; daughter, Betty Brock; son, Raymond Owens; grandchild, Phillip Richard Owens; and great grandchild, Kendra Cothren.

Surviving are her sons, Everette Owens, Sr., Phillip Owens and spouse Willa, Roy Owens all of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Tim Brock and spouse Sherry of Mulberry, Ravonda Pruitt and spouse Jerry of Traphill, Johnny Owens of North Wilkesboro, Everette Owens, Jr. and spouse Anna of Kings Mtn., Gina Holloway and spouse Frankie of Mtn. View, Dina Gibson of Charleston, South Carolina, Cindy Owens and spouse William Garrett of Moravian Falls; numerous great grandchildren; and numerous great great grandchildren.

Eva Richardson, 87

Mrs. Eva Jean Chambers Richardson, 87 of Traphill, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at her home.

Eva was born on July 18, 1932 in Wilkes County to Sherman Rosco Chambers and Myrtle Octavia Welborn Chambers.

Eva is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harrold, Lee, Dwight, Bill Chambers; sisters, Pat Chambers, Edmie Joyner.

Eva is survived by her husband Rev. Jackie Richardson of the home; sons, Michael Richardson (Donna) of North Wilkesboro, Tim Richardson (Renee) of Hays, Jamie Richardson of Traphill; daughters, Debbie Asbell (Allan) of Kernersville, Tina Boles (Lee) of Texas, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

The Family conducted a Celebration of Life Service January 19, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.

Mr. Richard" Larry" Anderson, age 74 of Roaring River, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020 at his home.

Memorial service wasJanuary 18th, at Briar Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Wesley Mosteller and Pastor Scott Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Anderson was born March 12, 1945 in Wilkes County to Robert "Jack" Lucis Anderson and Ella Mae Blackburn Anderson. He retired from Stroh's Brewery and Tyson Foods as a Chicken Farmer. Larry was an avid golfer and a good friend to all. Mr. Anderson was a member of Briar Creek Baptist Church

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter in law; Michelle Shew Anderson.

He is survived by his wife; Kay Rist Anderson of the home, two daughters; Kimberly A. Weatherman and husband Bryan of Jonesville and Lisa A. Douglas of Elkin, three sons; Richie Anderson of Roaring River, Paul Layne of Raleigh and Aaron Layne of Wake Forest, ten grandchildren; Megan Crosswhite and husband Matt, Lakyn Stewart, Halle Day, Bailey Martin and husband Eddie, Anna Anderson, Tia Sparks, Cassidy Layne, Alex Layne, Olivia Layne and Parker Layne, five great grandchildren, Trenton Sparks, Ansley Crosswhite, Grayson Crosswhite, Waylon Martin and Ellison Crosswhite and a brother; Russell Anderson of Roaring River.

Maggie Combs, 71

Mrs. Maggie Bumgarner Combs, age 71 of Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Accordius Health at Wilkesboro.

Funeral services were January 18, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Millers Creek with Rev. Keith Lyons officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Combs was born September 21, 1948 in Ashe County to Thomas Franklin Rogers and Maudie Jane Huffman Rogers. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She loved attending church, loved her family and the Staff of Accordius Health.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter; Gwendlon Bumgarner, a great grandson; Joshua Foster, Jr., two sisters; Maudie Sue Dillard and Mary Ruth Hart and one brother; John Franklin Rogers.

She is survived by two daughters; Melissa Sheeler and husband David, Crystal Call and husband Marty all of North Wilkesboro, two sons; Charles Bumgarner and wife Karen and Chris Bumgarner all of Hays, seven grandchildren, Theresa Mooney, Devin Sheeler, Jared Sheeler, Seth Call, Billie Jean Bumgarner, Edgar Silva, Greta Silva, four great grandchildren; Kamron Foster, Michael Walker, Jr., Grayson Walker and Levy Sheeler and one sister; Connie Hart of Purlear.

Edgar Beshears, Jr. 73

Mr. Edgar Lester (Bucky) Beshears, Jr. age 73 of Winston Salem, formerly of Wilkes County passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2020.

Graveside services were January 19, at Yellow Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Ryan Penley officiating.

Mr. Beshears was born December 12, 1946 in Wilkes County to Edgar Lester Beshears, Sr. and Katherine Holland Beshears. He was a member of Fishing Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother; Stephen George Beshears.

Mr. Beshears is survived by two sisters; Jennifer B. Osborne and husband; Brown of Moravian Falls, Susan B. Odom and husband Terry of Greensboro, a sister in law; Kim Beshears of Hays, two brothers; Ben H. Beshears and wife Ethel of Purlear and Bobby Kenneth White of Wilkesboro and several nieces and nephews.

Jackie Broyhill, 65

Mrs. Jackie Sue Summerlin Broyhill, 65, of Millers Creek, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at her home.

Jackie was born on April 5, 1954 in Wilkes County to James Edward "Ed" Summerlin Sr and Georgie Pearl "Bobbie" Lovette.

Jackie is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Tonya "Sunshine" Walsh; sister, Judy Johnson and grandson Jayln Walsh.

Jackie is survived by her husband, Randy Broyhill; son, Shawn Walsh of Wilkesboro; daughter, Tammy Walsh of Wilkesboro; brothers, James E. Summerlin jr, David Allen Summerlin (Kim); 3 grandchildren, Justin Walsh (Asia Castilleja), Harleigh Walsh, Baileigh Walsh all of Millers Creek and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was January 18, 2020 at West End Baptist Church. The funeral service was at 1 p.m. Burial followed at Mountlawn Memorial Park in Wilkesboro.

Conrad McNeil, 88

Mr. Conrad Leon McNeil, age 88 of Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020 in SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville.

Funeral services were January 18, at Lewis Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Dwayne Andrews, Rev. Sherrill Wellborn and Pastor Ronnie Ellis officiated. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 was in the church cemetery.

Mr. McNeil was born January 5, 1932 in Wilkes County to Arthur H. and Bessie Virginia Shepherd McNeil. He was a member of Lewis Fork Baptist Church. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Maria Del Consuelo Perales McNeil, three sons; Michael, Arthur and Gary McNeil, three sisters; Irene

Robertson, Hellen Blackburn and Clara Faye Ellis and five brothers; Ralph, Arvil, Tyre and an infant brother Claude McNeil and Roy Shepherd.

He is survived by four grandchildren; April, Justin, Carrena and Shane McNeil and two great grandchildren; Kaden and Kinsleigh Hackett.

Tom Alexander, 92

Thomas Finley "Tom" Alexander, 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at his residence on Tuesday, January 14, 2020.

Born in Wilkes County on April 14, 1927, he was the son of the late John H. Alexander and Ella Ballou Alexander.

Tom was a WWII veteran who served in the United States Navy. He retired from driving trucks local and long distance. He traveled in 49 different states. He loved people. He had a warm and friendly personality. Tom never met a stranger. He was a member of Grandview Baptist Church in Waynesville.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Peggy Duncan Alexander; one daughter, Melissa Jones (Jay); three grandchildren, Annette Doom (Robb), Jennifer Taylor (Phillip), Jonathan Jones, and four great grandchildren.

Thank you to Pastor Barry Willett and our church family at Grandview Baptist Church for all the expressions of love through prayers, calls, visits and cards.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 17, 2020 at Scenic Memorial Gardens in Moravian Falls, North Carolina.

Ellen Kay Lankford, age 57

Miss Ellen Kay Lankford, age 57 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, January 13, 2020 at her home.

A Celebration of Life Service was held 2 p.m., Saturday, January 18, 2020, at Arbor Grove United Methodist Church on Arbor Grove Church Road in Purlear, with Rev. Dr. Susan Pillsbury Taylor officiating.

Speakers were Mr. Ken Welborn, Mr. Larry Griffin and Mrs. Janet Lael Wood. The family received friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Greeters during the service were Heather Dean and Allison Ivey.

Miss Lankford was born August 1, 1962, in Wilkes County to Samuel Hayden and Willa Mae McNeil Lankford. She was a laboratory scientist with Guilford County Health Department and was a member of Arbor Grove United Methodist Church.

Ellen always excelled in school. She attended Millers Creek Elementary and West Wilkes High schools. During her senior year, she transferred to Wilkes Central High School to take advanced classes, which allowed her to enter college as a sophomore. She went to Appalachian State University in Boone where she earned her bachelors degree in biology. She continued her education at Wake Forest Baptist Medical School and Appalachian State University, going on to earn her masters degree in biology.

During high school she worked for Winn-Dixie grocery store in North Wilkesboro and later for Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission under the late Betty Baker. After completing her college education, she worked at Davie County Memorial Hospital in Mocksville. Later, she went to work for the Guilford County Health Department as a laboratory scientist. She also worked part-time at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro in the same capacity.

She lived in Greensboro during most of her working career. She retired from the Guilford County Health Department. Ellen moved back home to Wilkes in August 2015.

Ellen had no children, but rather looked at her brothers, Mike and Jerry's, children as her own. Later, when Jerry's grandchildren arrived, she acted as a grandmother to those children as well. In return, they all loved her dearly.

Although she had many hobbies and interests - mostly dealing with more intellectual endeavors - her main passion and love was for her family, whom she treated wonderfully.

Ellen was also an accomplished pianist and vocalist. She could also play the dulcimer.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers; Gary Steven Lankford and Michael Grayden Lankford.

Ellen is survived by a brother; Jerry Alfred Lankford of Millers Creek, five nieces; Eva May Lankford and fiancé Robert Carlton of Millers Creek, Heather Renee Greene and husband Joven of Wilkesboro, Jennifer Osborne and husband Edwin of Millers Creek, Anna Lankford and husband Josh Church of Millers Creek and Gabriella Lankford of Hamptonville and two great nephews; Sammie Osborne and Charlie Church. Ellen is also survived by her two dearest friends: Janet Lael Wood of Wilkesboro, and Lisa Church of Millers Creek.

There are also four special people Ellen claimed as family. They are Destiny, Cassidy and Samantha Toliver - whom she considered nieces - and their father, Ken Toliver, all of Wilkes. They are the children and husband of Ellen's dear friend, the late Carmel Toliver.

Special music was provided by Gabriella Lankford, Destiny Toliver, Larry Griffin and Rev. Dr. Susan Pillsbury Taylor.

Stephen Morris Coulter, 78

Stephen Morris Coulter, age 78, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, January 13, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born January 15, 1941 in Catawba County to Ray and Mozelle Smith Coulter. Mr. Coulter attended the Lutheran Church of the Atonement. He worked many years for Vannoy Lankford Plumbing and four years at the Ebenezer's Attic. Mr. Coulter was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard Coulter.

Surviving are his wife, Gwynda Bussell Coulter; brother, Gary Coulter and spouse Pam of Newton; one niece and several nephews.

Lee Edward Kilby, 52

Lee Edward Kilby, age 52, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, January 13, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Lee was born June 26, 1967 in Wilkes County to Nonnie Edward "Eddie" Kilby and Delores Mae Shumate. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle; doing toy runs with the Hillbillies; and loving his dog Oppie. Mr. Kilby was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bern and Violet Shumate, Gather and Ella Kilby and his wife, Beatrice Kilby.

Surviving are his son, Joshua Lee Kilby of North Wilkesboro; brother, Blake Edward Kilby of North Wilkesboro; mother, Delores Trivette and Fred Wagoner of North Wilkesboro; father, Eddie Kilby and Renee Mendenhall of Dobson; his best canine friend, Oppie; and large extended family.

Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tommy Mikeal, Rev. Keith Honeycutt and Rev. Dean Adams officiating. Jerry Alexander, 73

Brother Jerry Ander Alexander, age 73 of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday at Northside Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Seth Whitley, Brother Jason Lee Whitley and Mr. Jason Richardson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in Middle Cross Baptist Church Cemetery. .

Jerry was born October 19, 1945 in Wilkes County to Roy Clinton and Lura Mae Stone Alexander. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was a pastor for 16 years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Judy Brown Alexander and one brother; Earl Alexander.

He is survived by three daughters; Sandy Richardson and husband Wayne of Hays, Dawn Alexander and Pam Alexander both of North Wilkesboro, one grandson; Jason Richardson and fiance' Chelsey Berry, and one great grandchild; Carly Richardson, sister; Mary Nell Williams of North Wilkesboro, brother; Mayford Alexander and wife; Thelma of Roaring River and sister-in-law; Jane Alexander of Rock Creek.

Fellman Cheek, 84

Preacher Fellman Cheek, age 84 of Roaring River, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Hall, Pastor Brian Cardwell and Pastor Larry Stone officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Preacher Cheek was born January 29, 1935 in Wilkes County to Ell and Mary Elizabeth Gentry Cheek. He was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church. Preacher Cheek dedicated over 50 years of his life to preaching the Gospel. He was Pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wilkesboro for 4 years, Calvary Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro for 40 plus years where he was Pastor Emeritus, Grassy Knob Baptist Church in Union Grove for 3 years and Maple Springs Baptist Church in Ronda.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Betty Jane Billings Cheek, four sisters; Geneva Hudler, Ozena Myers, Mary Hemric and Rosie Hanes and three brothers; Willard Cheek, Clemmon Cheek and Marvin Cheek.

He is survived by a daughter: Karen Souther and husband Grant of Millers Creek, two sons: Tam Cheek and wife Jan of North Wilkesboro and Jody Cheek and wife Heather of Ocean Isle; six grandchildren: Joseph Cheek (Missy) of Charlotte, Todd Mathis (Lisa) of North Wilkesboro, Carisa Meade (Bradley) of North Wilkesboro, Thomas Cheek (Jordan) of Yadkinville, Andrew Cheek and Aiden Cheek both of Ocean Isle; six great grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Makayla Cheek, Amber Mathis, Slater and Alarie Meade and Sydney Cheek, and one sister Edna Norman (Paul) of Thurmond.

Mr. Jordan Ryan Adams, age 33 of North Wilkesboro passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Christian Fellowship Mission Church with Pastor Roger Wagoner officiating. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.

Mr. Adams was born August 4, 1986 in Wilkes County to Gary Walter and Kim Holbrook Adams. He was a 2005 graduate of North Wilkes High School and worked for Hobes Ham.

He was preceded in death by his father; Gary Walter Adams and grandfather; Roscoe Holbrook and great grandparents; Glenn and Alsie Douglas.

He is survived by his mother; Kim Holbrook Taylor and husband; Terry of McGrady and two sisters; Kandace Thorley and husband Terry of Charlotte and Rylee Taylor of McGrady, grandparents; Betty and Carvin Brown of Millers Creek and his girlfriend; Meagan Smith and special friends; Mousey and Zae Zae.

Bobby Yoder, 59

Bobby Jean Yoder, age 59, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Bobby was born February 4, 1960 in Tazwell County, Virginia. Bobby was one of the most amazing, hardworking mothers. She never met a stranger and was the grandmother of the century. She was loved by everyone who got to know her. Ms. Yoder was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Eugene and Idna Gladys Yates; brother, Timmy Yoder; and first husband, Joseph Haney.

Sue Summers, 81

Mrs. Sue Mathis Summers, age 81 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist- Wilkes Medical Center.

Graveside services were September 3, at Mountlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Chris Lakey officiating.

Mrs. Summers was born January 21, 1938 in Wilkes County to Coy and Thelma Jarvis Mathis. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sports, gardening, cooking and her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Charles E. Summers, Sr., three sisters; Mary Sale, Lucille Johnson and Jean Anderson and one brother; Buddy Mathis.

She is survived by three sons; Charles Summers Jr. and wife Debbie, John Summers and wife Rosie and James Summers and wife Angela all of North Wilkesboro, three grandchildren; Adam Summers and wife Randee of State Road, Ashley Eller and husband Adam and Caitlyn Summers all of North Wilkesboro and four great grandchildren.

Rita Harrold, 74

Rita Marlene Harrold, age 74, of Liberty, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. She was born April 19, 1945 in Wilkes County to Boss and Ada Dillard Souther. Mrs. Harrold attended Julian Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Harrold; and several siblings.

Surviving are son, Norman Harrold of Liberty; daughter, Marna Dunn of Tucson, Arizona; brothers, Terry Souther of Liberty, Carl Souther of Thomasville, David Souther of North Wilkesboro; and sister, Joyce Golds of Purlear.

Woodrow Dowell, 73

Mr. Woodrow "Woodie" Wilson Dowell, age 73 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services were September 1, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Hall and Pastor Donnie Shumate officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Dowell was born April 20, 1946 in Wilkes County to Howard William Dowell and Annie Floss Wooten Dowell. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While serving in Vietnam, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and earned his Sharpshooter Badge (M-14) Rifle. He was retired from Wilkes Electric Armature where he worked as an Electrical Tech for 32 years. Woodie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for 40 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; Grace Campbell and five brothers; Lonnie Dowell, Bob Dowell, Bill Dowell, Junior Dowell and Paul Dowell.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette Walker Dowell of the home, three daughters; Angela Wood and husband Kevin of North Wilkesboro, Patricia

Rhoades and husband Tim of Boomer and Crystal Billings and husband Michael of Hays, six grandchildren; Taylor McKenzie Wood, Avery Cheyenne Wood, Isaac Braden Wood, Brittany Paige Rhoades, Ashley Brooke Billings and Michael Matthew Billings and two sisters; Laura Byers of Wilkesboro and

Rosa Lee Neaves and husband Gerald of West Jefferson.

Mary Gambill, 86

Mrs. Mary June Bishop Gambill, age 86 of Elkin, formally of the Brushy Mountain Community passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Funeral services were September 1, at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Joe Wood officiating. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Gambill was born February 19, 1933 in Wilkes County to Paul Bledsoe Bishop and Mary Thelma Bumgarner Bishop. She retired from Cashion Oil Company as their Office Manager.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Buel Goodwin "Buck" Gambill, Jr., an infant son; Phillip Jerome Gambill and a sister; Bill Griffin and spouse Bill.

She is survived by a son; Jerome Gambill and wife Jennifer of Elkin, two grandchildren; Grace Elizabeth Gambill and Lily Hope Gambill, a sister; Jean Bullis and husband Glenn of Wilkesboro and a brother; Pete Bishop and spouse Betty of Wilkesboro.

James Higgins, 86

James Russell Higgins, age 86, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville. Mr. Higgins was born May 13, 1933 in Wilkes County to Major McKinley and Ethel Lou Handy Higgins. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Austin Higgins; sisters, Hazel Handy and Nellie Mae Higgins Smithey; and brothers, Wayne and Clark Higgins.

Surviving are his wife, Nina May Watts Higgins; daughter, Sally Wambli Sina Win of Muskogee, Oklahoma; brother, Donald Higgins; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren;

several nieces and nephews.

Mr. James Russell Vannoy, age 70 of North Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, August 29, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Bural with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Vannoy was born August 29, 1949 in Wilkes County to Claude Vannoy Sr. and Selma Stokes Vannoy. He served in the United States Army and did 2 tours of duty in Vietnam.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife; Gloria Dean Pickens Vannoy and his second wife; Jean Remines Vannoy, one sister; Theresa Vannoy and three brothers; Ronald Vannoy, Claude Vannoy, Jr and Robert Lee Vannoy.

He is survived by two sons; Russell Vannoy and wife; Sandy of North Wilkesboro and Demetrius Vannoy of Florida, eleven grandchildren; Torrence Vannoy, Kirstyn Vannoy, Alisha Vannoy, Russell Vannoy, Sami Bell, Danisha Vannoy, Iesha Vannoy Deonte Vannoy, Shamori Vannoy Demetrius (DJ) Vannoy Jr., and Ejovi Vannoy, three great grandchildren; Kennedi Ascencio, Kassidy Ascencio and Bryton Lane, one sister; JoAnn Vannoy Gayles and husband Jackie of Wilkesboro and two brothers; Allen E. Vannoy and wife Jackie and Carl W. Vannoy all of Wilkesboro and sister-in-law; Anita Vannoy of North Wilkesboro.

Mr. George William Miles, age 55 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Miles was born June 17, 1964 in Flint Michigan to Jack D. Miles and Wilma L. Miles. He was an active member of the Wilkesboro Church of Christ. Mr. Miles was a Lab Chemist with Tyson Technical Services.

He is survived by his fiancé Shauna Danielle Porter of North Wilkesboro and a sister; Jewel Cousino of Burton, Michigan.

Gladys Castle, 83

Gladys Zora Castle, age 83, of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. She was born August 27, 1936 in Wilkes County to Wade Jonathan and Mattie Laws Castle. Gladys was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She always had a smile for everyone. Ms. Castle was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ward Edward Castle; very special friend, Eugene Jarvis.

She is survived by her siblings, Lloyd Edward Castle and spouse Lorine of Wilkesboro, Evelyn Anderson and spouse Turner of North Wilkesboro, Mary Mash and spouse Jimmy, Ann Bishop, Grace James, David Castle (Heather Anderson) all of Wilkesboro; nieces, Melissa Mash Whitley and Rita Brown; several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was August 30, at Northside Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Whitley, Pastor Joseph Sturgill officiating and eulogy provided by Chris Bishop. Burial will follow in Moravian Falls Cemetery.

Linda Koontz, 72

Mrs. Linda Arnett Koontz, age 72 of Millers Creek, NC passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 27, 2019.

She was born July 17, 1947 in St. Augustine FL to Dalton and Catherine Tedder Arnett. Linda was a loving mother, grandmother and devoted wife. She was a remarkable cook and enjoyed hosting holidays with family. She was an avid traveler, who loved discovering new roads and shortcuts. She had a passion for quilting, trying new styles and patterns while creating incredible quilts. She played piano beautifully with one of her favorites being Nadia's Theme which could fill up the room, she was truly talented. Linda was very artistic and creative. Her favorite memories were baking Christmas cookies with her children and grandchildren and picking out Holiday decorations. Linda loved all aspects of life and tried to experience as much of it as possible. There are no words to accurately express the love she had for others. Linda touched and enriched so many lives and we know she will continue to enrich us all from heaven.

Linda is survived by her husband; Coy Alton Koontz, Jr. of the home, two daughters; Suzanne Koontz of Millers Creek and Ashley Weaver and husband, Rick of Melbourne Fl three grandchildren; Chase Vogt, Shelby Vogt, Sean Weaver, two brothers; Glenn Arnett and wife Lynn of St. Augustine Fl and Virgil Arnett of Georgia and her devoted dog Toby.

John Parker, 81

John Rufus Parker, age 81, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, August 26, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born May 16, 1938 in Wilkes County to Coy and Kate Anderson Parker. John was a member of Oakwoods Baptist Church. He was a US Army Veteran, receiving a medal for carbine and rifle sharpshooter and was a butcher. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Winnie Arrington and Martha Louise Parker McCulley and grandchildren, Valerie Dawn Teague, Jonathan Scott Teague.

Surviving are his sister, Antonia Parker Bailey and spouse R.C. of Winter Haven, Florida; step daughter, Jane E. Osborne of North Wilkesboro; step son, Larry Osborne of North Wilkesboro; great grandchildren, Cameron Teague and Kyleigh Teague; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was August 30 at Oakwoods Baptist Church with Pastor Christopher Clark officiating.
