Committed Care Hospice is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to a person approaching end-of-life. This time can be a soul-enhancing experience for the terminally ill patient and family members. To us, it is more than merely coping with the symptoms of dying and the inevitable loss that each family feels when their loved one passes. It is about the journey. It is about keeping things real. Keeping them cost-effective. We keep families and friends supported in the knowledge that we are keeping their loved one as physically and emotionally comfortable as possible while promoting them to lead a purpose-driven and meaningful life at home or at hospice for the duration of their life.

The Death of My Father
By Steve Martin
In his death, my father, Glenn Vernon Martin, did something he could not do in life. He brought our family together.
After he died at age 83, many of his friends told me how much they loved him—how generous he was, how outgoing, how funny, how caring. I was surprised at these descriptions. During my teenage years, there was little said to me that was not criticism. I remember him as angry. But now, ten years after his death, I recall events that seem to contradict my memory of him. When I was 16, he handed down to me the family’s 1957 Chevy. Neither one of us knew at the time that it was the coolest car anyone my age could have. When I was in the third grade he proudly accompanied me to the school tumbling contest where I won first prize. One day, while I was in single digits, he suggested we play catch in the front yard. This offer to spend time together was so anomalous that I didn’t quite understand what I was supposed to do.
When I graduated from high school, my father offered to buy me a tuxedo. I refused because my father always shunned gifts. I felt with my refusal, that somehow in a convoluted, perverse logic, I was being a good son. I wish now that I could have let him buy me a tuxedo, let him be a dad.
My father sold real estate but he wanted to be in show business. I was probably five years old when I saw him in a bit part at the Call Board theater on Melrose Place in Hollywood. He came on in the second act and served a drink. The theater existed until a few years ago and is now finally defunct and, I believe, a lamp shop.
My father’s attitude toward my show business accomplishments was critical. After my first appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1976, he wrote a bad review of me in the newsletter of the Newport Board of Realtors where he was president. Later, he related this news to me slightly shamefaced, and said that after it appeared, his best friend came into his office holding the paper, placed it on his desk, and shook his head sternly, indicating a wordless “no.”
In the early ’80s, a close friend of mine, whose own father was killed walking across a street and whose mother committed suicide on Mother’s Day, said that if I had anything to work out with my parents, I should do it now, because one day that opportunity would be over. When I heard this remark, I had no idea that I would ever want to work anything out with them, that, in fact, there was anything to work out at all. But it stewed in my brain for years, and soon I decided to try and get to know my parents. I took them to lunch every Sunday I could, and would goad them into talking.
It was our routine that after I drove them home from our lunches, my mother and father, now in their 80s, would walk me to the car. I would kiss my mother on the cheek and my father and I would wave or awkwardly say goodbye. But this time we hugged each other and he whispered, “I love you,” with a voice barely audible. This would be the first time these words were ever spoken between us. I returned the phrase with the same awkward, broken delivery.
As my father ailed, he grew more irritable. He made unreasonable demands, such as waking his 24-hour help and insisting that they take him for drives at three a.m., as it was the only way he could relax. He also became heartrendingly emotional. He could be in the middle of a story and begin to laugh, which would provoke sudden tears, making him unable to continue.
In his early 80s, my father’s health declined further and he became bedridden. There must be an instinct about when the end is near, as we all found ourselves gathered at my parents’ home in Orange County, California. I walked into the house they had lived in for 35 years and my weeping sister said, “He’s saying goodbye to everyone.”
A hospice nurse said to me, “This is when it all happens.” I didn’t know what she meant, but soon I did.
I walked into the bedroom where he lay, his mind alert but his body failing. He said, almost buoyantly, “I’m ready now.” I understood that his intensifying rage of the last few years had been against death and now his resistance was abating. I stood at the end of the bed and we looked into each other’s eyes for a long, unbroken time. At last he said, “You did everything I wanted to do.”
I said the truth: “I did it for you.”
Looking back, I’m sure that we both had different interpretations of what I meant.
I sat on the edge of the bed and another silence fell over us. Then he said, “I wish I could cry, I wish I could cry.”
At first, I took this as a comment on his condition but am forever thankful that I pushed on. “What do you want to cry about?” I finally said.
“For all the love I received and couldn’t return.”
He had kept this secret, his desire to love his family, from me and from my mother his whole life. It was as though an early misstep had kept us forever out of stride. Now, two days from his death, our pace was aligning and we were able to speak.
My father’s death has a thousand endings. I continue to absorb its messages and meanings. He stripped death of its spooky morbidity and made it tangible and passionate. He prepared me in some way for my own death. He showed me the responsibility of the living to the dying. But the most enduring thought was expressed by my sister, Melinda. She told me she had learned something from all this. I asked her what it was. She said, “Nobody should have to die alone.”

Hoag and Vivante Partner to Improve Senior Living Communities
Tumblr media
Renowned healthcare network Hoag and assisted living and memory care provider Vivante have announced a collaborative effort to enhance healthcare services for aging residents. The collaboration extends to the two Vivante campuses in Orange County, including Newport-Mesa, which opened in October 2013 on Monrovia Avenue, and a second location on San Clemente Drive, which opened in late November. This partnership follows Vivante's 2021 launch of its Vivante Vitality Program, an eight-week series aimed at tracking changes in physical, nutritional, cognitive, and mental health for participating seniors.
While Vivante provides essential daily living activities, medication management, and grooming, it lacks direct medical care licensing. Hoag has stepped in to bring its established medical expertise to Vivante to fill this gap. This partnership streamlines critical rehabilitation and medical treatment, thus allowing residents to transition between inpatient and outpatient care conveniently. Hoag medical staff work full-time at the campuses at offices located in Vivante Hoag Wellness Center.
Hoag fills the medical gaps to ensure Vivante residents have access to comprehensive care without leaving Vivante's supportive community to access a higher level of care, such as skilled nursing. This collaboration benefits seniors who need medical care and services and eases the burden on the medical care system by minimizing unnecessary hospitalizations and providing preventive care. Hospice care is also available to Vivante residents in their communities to address the coordination of medications and equipment for comfort and symptom management.
Residents benefit from having convenient access to primary care physicians on-site and can receive personalized care plans tailored to their needs. Hoag offers a collaborative approach with residents, families, and specialist physicians.
Residents can access Medicare Part A and B care. They can also participate in rehabilitation therapy at home or in the newly renovated VIVAH (Vivante Initiative for Vital Aging with Hoag) campus spaces.
Trained professionals can assist residents who struggle to adjust to assisted living or memory care. In addition, patients, families, and caregivers can receive psychological and spiritual care and bereavement support.
Hoag Hospital is constantly forging new paths to excellent health care. Therefore, Vivante residents can participate in new studies to help further the hospital’s research and benefit the residents at no cost. In addition, Hoag is also working with doctors at the Neurosciences Institute to provide the most up-to-date cognitive care and programming to Vivante residents. It includes virtual reality for therapeutic purposes and the Montessori Method for dementia.
Vivante residents have access to skin cancer awareness education and checks through doctors from the Patty and George Hoag Cancer Center. They also receive education on the importance of diabetes prevention through lectures and one-on-one consultations with in-house Hoag physicians.
Aside from offering top health care, the Vivante campus communities offer resort-style living with various amenities such as an indoor pool, bowling alley, virtual golfing range, gym, art studio, yoga studio, dog park, and dining options. All units consist of accessibility features and equipped full-service kitchens. Monthly rates at the facilities vary based on unit size and range from $5,000 to $25,000.

Families want assurance that their loved ones receive excellent care from trusted providers such as Visiting Angels. This care helps them keep their dignity and quality of life while staying in their own familiar homes.
Understanding the Need for In Home Care Services Orange County
Demographic Trends Driving the Demand for In-Home Care: As people get older, more folks need help at home in Orange County. Because people are living longer and want to stay in their own homes, the need for assistance with daily tasks and managing health is going up. Also, more people have long-term health issues or disabilities, so there's even more need for in-home care that fits their needs.
Benefits of In-Home Care Compared to Other Options: Receiving care at home has many benefits compared to places like nursing homes or assisted living places. For one, it lets people keep their independence and dignity because they get care in their own familiar spaces. Also, getting care at home helps folks stay connected to their communities and loved ones, which can make life better. Plus, it's often cheaper because there are no extra fees for a place to stay, like there would be in a facility.
Challenges Families Face When Seeking In-Home Care Solutions: Even though there are advantages, families can face difficulties when trying to navigate the world of in-home care. It can be hard to find caregivers who are dependable and match the needs and wishes of the family. Also, arranging schedules and making sure care continues smoothly can be really tricky. And understanding how insurance works and what options there are for paying adds even more to the confusion. But with careful research and help, families can tackle these problems and discover the right in-home care choices in Orange County.
Investigating the Variety of In-Home Care Services
Personal Care Assistance: In-home care services cover lots of different kinds of help, like with everyday activities such as bathing, grooming, and getting dressed. Personal care aides give really important help to people who might find it hard to do these things alone. This kind of support helps them stay clean and take care of themselves overall.
Companionship Services: Many older people, especially those who live alone, often feel lonely and cut off from others. In-home caregivers offer companionship services to help with this. They provide emotional support and friendship, which can make seniors feel less alone and happier. Whether it's chatting, playing games, or going out together, these caregivers help seniors feel more connected and improve their mental well-being.
Medical and Health-Related Services: Apart from helping with everyday tasks, in-home care providers might also provide medical services to meet clients' healthcare needs. This can involve managing medications, checking vital signs, taking care of wounds, and aiding with medical appointments. By including medical services in their care plans, in-home caregivers assist individuals in handling chronic conditions and recovering from illnesses or surgeries while staying in the familiarity of their own homes.
Specialized Care for Specific Conditions: In Orange County, in-home care providers offer special services designed for people with different needs, like dementia or hospice care. Caregivers get special training to give caring and understanding help to people with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia. Also, hospice care services concentrate on giving comfort and help to people with serious illnesses and their families, making sure they feel respected and peaceful during their last days.

These rules are there to protect clients and make sure everyone knows what's going on and can be trusted.
Choosing the Right In-Home Care Provider
Factors to Consider When Selecting an In-Home Care Provider: When picking a home care provider in Orange County, it's important to think about things like how long they've been doing it, what people say about them, and what kinds of help they give. Find someone who has a good history of taking care of people well and who can give you the specific help you need.
Questions to Ask During the Selection Process To make sure you find the best match for your family member, ask potential in-home care services about how they choose caregivers, train them, and handle emergencies. Also, find out how they create care plans and involve both clients and their families in making decisions.
Tips for Ensuring Compatibility and Quality of Care: To make sure your loved one has a good care experience, focus on finding a caregiver who gets along well with them. Think about things like personality, hobbies, and cultural background when choosing a caregiver. This helps create a happy relationship between them. Keep talking to the caregiver and give them feedback regularly. This helps keep the care good and lets you deal with any worries quickly.
Understanding Expenses and Payment Choices
Understanding the Cost Factors Associated with In-Home Care: The price of in-home care services in Orange County may change based on things like how much care is needed, how often caregivers visit, and where you live. It's important to get specific cost estimates and think about other costs like getting to appointments and buying medical things when you're planning how to pay for in-home care.
Understanding Insurance and Government Assistance: To understand how to pay for in-home care, check out insurance like long-term care insurance and Medicare. Also, look into government programs such as Medicaid and Veterans Affairs benefits. They could help with the costs if you qualify.
Tips for Budgeting and Financial Planning for In-Home Care Services:  Create a detailed money plan that thinks about both present and future care requirements. Think about talking with a money expert to look into ways to save, different things to invest in, and what help is out there to guarantee financial safety in the long run while making sure your loved one gets the best care possible.
Future Trends and Innovations in In-Home Care
Emerging Technologies Shaping the Future of In-Home Care: New technology like remote monitoring gadgets and telehealth platforms is changing how in-home care is given. With these new tools, caregivers can help in real-time and connect with doctors quickly. This makes care safer and more effective.
Trends in Caregiving Approaches and Service Delivery Models: The in-home care industry is changing to fit the needs of clients and families better. They're offering new services like specialized dementia care and holistic wellness programs. This helps make the care experience better for everyone involved.
Potential Challenges and Opportunities on the Horizon: The future of in-home care has a lot of good things coming, but there are also some tough parts, like not having enough people to work and the cost of healthcare going up. But if we work together, come up with new ideas, and keep making things better, we can beat these challenges. This way, we can make sure that in-home care services in Orange County and other places get even better and are easier for people and families to use.
Conclusion

She was born in Hillsborough, NC to Rainey Baines Clayton and Alcy Mae Johnson Clayton. She attended Hillsboro High School and Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. She married Don Guthrie in 1967 and became the mother of four loving children.
She did secretarial work for Alamance County Social Services and later the Orange County Register of Deeds before operating a private daycare service from her Hillsborough home for many years. Many of the children she kept became like a "second family" and remained in contact with her over the years.
She loved music and enjoyed sharing her vocal talents in her youth as part of the "Clayton Sisters" trio. She also enjoyed a number of other hobbies including gardening and cooking. She was an excellent homemaker whose creativity, organizational skills, and generous hospitality were readily apparent in the frequent "get-togethers" she loved to host for family and friends.
Before declining health prevented her from attending, she was an active member of Beacon Baptist Church in Burlington, NC where she sang in the choir and taught children's church. Her deep faith was clearly evident, and her walk with Christ was marked by perseverance and fervent prayer. Her gentle spirit, quiet strength, kindness, and humor made profound and lasting impressions on many who knew her.
Mrs. Guthrie was preceded in death by her sisters Priscilla Clayton Ray, Ella Joyce Clayton Kindall, and Mary Clayton Coggins; as well as her brother-in-law Brantley Marvin Ray Sr., and her brother-in-law Keith Lavern Kindall. I’m sad today; the dead whale and pie
I am sad today for many reasons. Those two barrels don’t taste very good. I still haven’t taken the donations to the Hospice thrift shop. I forgot to get that order together. I had my first mammogram today (which was fine, nice lady touching my breasts to arrange me on the machine, so what’s not to like? Lol. squish). Things just aren’t working today: the drip tray is not draining, the trunk line for CO2 is not connected so I have to go again to exchange tanks, but I haven’t time today. The people that say they are interested in using our pressed fruit aren’t returning my messages and the pulp is just rotting out there and I don’t have time to take it to the field to compost it today. And there is more fruit to press. And this time last year Hal was still my friend, though I found out I would not be his lover. And the other person I thought would be my lover, well…
I’m definitely going to knock off early from work. But what can I do to cheer myself up? There was one day around 2008 when W’s dad was asking her to co-sign a loan, an enormous loan, the kind of loan that fucks up the rest of her ones if goes into default. He wouldn’t tell her what it was for, didn’t have a good reason for why he needed it. Just told her she wouldn’t understand, which is absolutely not true as W is one of the most savvy in market and economics I’ve ever met. So she told him no. As it turned out, this was the beginning of a federal investigation into her dad’s business dealings which would eventually end with him in federal prison for fraud. We would learn that he lost his retirement, his wife’s retirement, his son’s mother in law’s retirement, and the life savings of countless others. W’s parents lost their big, beautiful house in the hills of Orange County, the one W grew up in. It was sold to pay court costs and probably satisfy some of the claimants that brought the suit. The only thing they had left to survive on was their pensions, luckily enough to live on. Still, it was a very depressing time.
My work as an environmental biologist for state parks was going great at the time, though it would take its turn. In fact, a whale had just washed up on the shore. That doesn’t happen every day. There’s nothing like a dead whale to cheer up your glum spouse when her dad has gotten himself into a pickle of a ponsi scheme, right?
Nothing like it, indeed.
The sun was approaching the horizon and the sky was changing color. The marine layer several miles offshore glowed golden. The blustery day was easing into a breezy evening as we traipsed down the boardwalk through the dune lake and coastal dune plant communities. Not everything was blooming but there were some lovely colorful flowers, sun cups and dune poppies and sea rocket, purple and yellow and orange. We caught sight of the least tern fledglings on the bridge over the lake where they were learning to fish, and those goofy fuzzy clumsy doofuses with their colorful leg bands were adorable. We saw a few rabbits and I pointed out raccoon, coyote, and owl tracks. As we crested the last dune to the beach, there it was, a juvenile humpback whale, still rolling in the surf due to the steepness of the beach and a berm of deposited sand. It kept rolling it back into the water, and the tidal motions kept trying to push it back up the berm. Its gray hide was scraped pink and gashed in places, presumably polished off by sand and torn by whatever rocks it had met. It’s slack jaw opening and closing as the water rushed in and around its enormous, baleened mandible, which seemed out of proportion for the size of the animal, as if it hadn’t grown into it yet. A few gulls tried to perch on the carcass, but it was an unsteady surface and they quickly abandoned it. And it did smell strongly, the ranicid blubber and putrescent muscle mixing with the smell of the shoreline and rotting kelp that also washed up on the beach. (The following day, one of our crew would brave the surf to get a chain around the tail which would be attached to the largest tractor at the park. The operator, big old crotchety Ted (retired, this was his fun retirement job), would haul it up to a level spot out of the surf, under which he would later dig its resting place. But before that, biologists from a series of curious natural history museums and colleges would descend upon it with their whaling gear (really, it’s the best stuff for the necropsy of a whale) and take samples and measurements. I have a photo of a woman proudly, smugly holding an eyeball that was bigger than her fist. When they were done, Ted would dig that grave next to the whale, shove it in, and and push sand to cover it up, like he did with all the large dead elephant seals and sea lions (there is a mass grave of them out there in the dunes somewhere; what will anthropologists think when they find it).)
While not the most uplifting sight, it certainly did break up the monotony, it certainly was a temporary distraction, and the physical activity was probably good for us. So. Yeah. Nothing cheers a person up more than sunset with a dead whale… But there is no dead whale for me to walk to today. So I guess I’ll make a pie.

Vivante’s Expanding Portfolio of Senior Living Offerings in California
Tumblr media
Completed in 2013, Vivante on the Coast had a $62 million price tag and represented the first luxury retirement community built in over two decades in Orange County’s scenic Newport Mesa area. The complex consists of 185 residences, of which 40 are within a secure memory care facility. Located on a gated seven-acre campus and only a half mile from Hoag Hospital, it has 200,000 square feet of developed space, including amenity facilities that total 31,000 square feet.
The brainchild of developer and Nexus Companies founder and CEO Curt Olson, the community was designed for those in the 65-plus demographic who wish to maintain an active lifestyle in retirement. It enables a socially fulfilling life within an age-focused community and takes in new residents well before assisted living becomes a medical necessity for them.
Among the amenities included within the residential setting at Vivante on the Coast are a physical therapy and fitness facility, a jacuzzi, a game room, and an indoor saltwater pool. Residents also enjoy access to a roof-top deck with views of the Pacific Ocean and outdoor gardens and courtyards. These offerings are amplified by programming that gets residents out and about, enjoying an active, social lifestyle.
The culinary program at Vivante spans diverse dining options, including a pizza oven, sushi bar, and well-thought-out dishes that incorporate fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients. Wine lockers and a bar and bistro are also part of the residential programming.
Within The Shores, a premier memory care facility, memory-impaired residents can access various supportive programs to enhance their quality of life, including a popular Music and Memory Care program.
Over the years, Vivante on the Coast earned numerous accolades, with readers of the Los Angeles Times selecting it as “Best Senior Living in Orange County” in 2020. This led to an ambitious expansion plan, with the Vivante Newport Mesa opening in late 2022 as a senior living community that offers a luxurious blend of memory care and assisted living.
As reported in the Los Angeles Times in early 2023, Vivante Newport Mesa represents a groundbreaking collaboration between the developer Nexus and Hoag. This reflects that Vivante does not maintain a direct medical care provider license, while Hoag has a reputation for being best-in-class in local medical services.
The Vivante side of the operation offers various existing services that meet resident medical needs, as directed by family members and primary physicians. These include personal grooming, the activities of daily living, and medicine management. With Hoag At Home on board, residents also access the Vivante Hoag Wellness Center and receive care that extends to hospice services, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
Hoag also maintains neurological departments that provide vital education and support to memory care community members. The result is a comprehensive program that fully looks after residents as their medical needs expand.
The partnership also brings Hoag staff members to the original Vivante campus and makes the transition from inpatient at Hoag Hospital to outpatient at Vivante simple and expeditious. It gives residents and their families the peace of mind that they can remain in place during critical medical treatment and rehabilitation phases of care. As the Hoag executive director of post-acute care describes, the aim is to create a warm, welcoming environment where seniors “know they can stay here, age in place and not have to go to a higher level of care.”
