Gasteria carinata var. glabra
Gasteria is a genus in the Asphodel Family, related to Aloe. Like the aloes, they have tubular flowers with nectar within, but they differ in the way the flowers dangle (and are curved to look like commas). The plant pictured is the eastern form of Gasteria carinata - G. carinata var. glabra. At the eastern end of its range, plants are speckled with white tubercles (raised white bumps, like salt grains on a pretzel), but the variety glabra has only white spots. In its native South Africa, nectar-loving sunbirds visit to pollinate the flowers, but here in California it is our hummingbirds that come calling.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 18 May 2023
My succulent houseplant Gasteria 'Little Warty' (ox tongue) has produced these long flower stems. The genus is named for the stomach-shaped flowers, ‘gaster’ being Latin for ‘stomach’. The clump-forming leaves have raised pale green stripes.

Plant help needed please
My Gasteria succulent is going white at the tips, then turning pink or the other way around. Point is, the part that is affected dies and it’s also on the other tips of the leaves of the plant. Maybe it’s sun-scald or a disease I don´t know about?
This piece I cut today to hopefully prevent it from reaching the stem. This leaf is from one of the three oldest succulent I have, where the pink spread the fastest.
The succulents have been in that pot for many years and from the original three became 12… They were really cramped in there. The succulent’s roots had made a circle carpet right under the plants. I finally repotted all of them mid-spring, but the pink had appeared on three plants last year.
Everything I know of my succulent:
Has mat, distichous (two-ranked), strap-shaped leaves
Specific species??? According to my research, my plant is one of the three, but I can’t decide which one.
Gasteria brachyphylla , Gasteria brachyphylla
Gasteria bicolor
Gasteria disticha , Gasteria disticha
If anyone knows why this is happening and how to stop or prevent this please tell me.

Gasteria 'Monroe's Silver'
This attractive Gasteria cultivar has pale speckled leaves that are smooth and polished-looking. It is either a selected form of Gasteria bicolor or a hybrid of that species, since its flowers look like this, with their pale color, small size, and markedly swollen bases. Gasterias come from southern Africa, and they are related to both Aloe and to Haworthia.

Gasteria.
