It's a magnetic nail polish and the pigment shift on it is gorgeous!!! but of course since I'm a first timer, I waited until holo taco's black friday sale to grab stuff like the base and top coats at a discount, and also this other magnetic nail polish colour cause it's so fucking pretty oh my god that velvet blue!!!! oh and two glitter toppers too just so I could use it with cremes that I'll likely get in the future from a regular drugstore

It's a piece meant to represent struggle, tears , uneven playfield, rage, depression… and cheekiness, hidden meaning, layers in the literal and figurative sense.

It mostly represents my own journey of liberty, freedom to do as you please, freedom to express emotions, freedom to be, freedom to love or not love, to make our own choices. As simple as these seem, mentally I have had limited freedoms, limited by beliefs, stereotypes, ideals and roles that are imposed.

The struggle is portrayed in the ripping of the paper and chaotically placing it all over the artwork. It could also be perceived in the piece of cord. It has light and black parts representing illness or mental illness versus life that falls lightly. Even the burning of the edges of the thin paper represents struggle and internal pain. The darkness represents the heaviness of feelings. In this piece the darkness is clearly portrayed and not hidden to show it to the world. It’s not sugar coated, actually quite the opposite as the canvas is sprinkled with salt. Salt is known to keep safe, and is sprinkled to protect the subject of the feelings of further harm. The uneven structure of the cardboard is highlighted in black charcoal to better show it. This piece is all about telling, showing, not hiding. Yet the layers and black do conceal some of the work. It represents the freedom to feel and to heal. In our society, feeling bad feelings is not yet widely accepted, it is deemed uncomfortable for the other person to see you struggle with ‘bad feelings’. There are no bad feelings. Once felt they melt away so hiding them has no use but to keep someone else comforted. The colors in this work are familiar to those who know. Soft pink, orange and red are significant markers of the freedom to love. They also give the piece a soft feminine vibe amongst the harsh black and still abundant white and cream. The teabags represent cheekiness. The yellow gives them a happy touch. Some of the words are still readable. "Partagez ce avec", "for everyone", enjoy", "rgy". Of course they also represent what's wrong with our world, our history and what contributes to our mental health. The wealthy enjoy their tea while it's harvested with a tremendous amount of labor and shipped across the world in containers. Our comfort is created by the work of others. Our luxury is someone else’s misery. To reinforce that, the label of the shipped box is visible. Postmen are also known to work on a killing schedule while other people enjoy having their goods delivered to their doorstep. The handwritten receipt is reminiscent of old times, but also reinforces that message that money is everywhere. The receipt might also signify deception. Nowadays all receipts are typed out, to keep track of sales for government taxes. Is this a sign of tax fraud? Who is hit the hardest by tax fraud? The other workers who miss out on benefits because of it? Or the ones inning taxes? Are honest people at a disadvantage because of it? One thing is certain, we are all at a disadvantage when the ones with big incomes don't pay taxes. Wealth is distributed unevenly, people aren’t able to afford a comfortable living anymore. Were we ever? Are we too dangerous to the ruling power when we could? Actual freedoms seem to disappear worldwide. Mental freedoms become more important? Love is one of those, love comes in many forms. Friends, lovers, community, pets (weird way to handle animals, they are caged and not there in free will, even though I have a cat). Pets signify or need to control everything as humans. We are afraid of how unhinged things would be if they roam freely. Same goes for humans, the ruling class is afraid of how free we would be and how we wouldnt give a fuck about them and they would lose control.

This work is subconsciously influenced by the collage classes in my painting class, the unhinged tv show I saw yesterday wie zoekt die wint, and the abstract work of some of my painting friends and coworkers/ co-artists like Lluis salvador sanchez, Han coussement, Joke derycke and examples in the painting classes. And probably more given the subconscious part.

The title love =>< love could be a reference to the love is love queer slogan. But the >< signs also imply a clash. I interpret this in a way that hetero love is portrayed everywhere but once there’s a drop of queer love visible, it is a problem for some, and the abundant love all of a sudden needs to shrink.

I spent way too much on my fingernails...

I’ve never had nice fingernails because I’ve never been healthy enough to have nice fingernails. Thin, soft, ridged, curled, pasty pale white with no moon, if I painted them, wore nail tapes, wore press on or glue on nails, etc. my fingernails peel away from my nail beds.

It’s not great.

Started seeing polygel nails on Instagram and decided that, despite every other type of fingernail enhancement I’d tried making them worse, I’d give it a try.

Which does NOT have a UV lamp. You do need a UV lamp for these nails.

They’ve updated the photo since I bought my kit to show that it DOES include the little clips to hold the molds on, but when I ordered that wasn’t shown or mentioned so I had also ordered this set:

I ended up not needing it since the Phoenixy kit does have clips.

HOWEVER! It turns out my fingernails are too FLAT to use the molds at all, and if I try to clip one of the molds onto my fingernail, the clip, mold, and sticky, sticky polygel gel slide around and get everywhere.

So I have to instead shape the nail over those gold guide stickers which I burned through VERY fast in trying to figure out how to do this.

I do prefer the brush that came in the DouborQ set over the one from Phoenixy. It’s sturdier and longer.

There is absolutely a learning curve to using this stuff.

I had the HARDEST time spreading it out smoothly and reshaping it and etc. etc. Most pros use a rotary tool but I only have the two emery boards that came in the kit.

Eventually I did manage to have both hands done at once (oh boy working this stuff with my non-dominant hand is a struggle) and had it looking semi-decent with my favorite of the gels that came in the kit.

You may be able to see from this that the product in reality doesn’t look like the example photo. It’s not a pink gel heavily loaded with glitter, it’s a clear gel with a smattering of pink glitter. It’s still very pretty, but doesn’t hide the signs of poor health on my natural nails as much as I’d like it to. The pinks also aren’t as opaque as they look in the example, but I guess that’s necessary because this is a UV curing polymer.

Of course these nails can be painted, too.

Polygel is STICKY. You have to moosh it around with a brush soaked in Slip Solution, but I did see people saying to use rubbing alcohol instead of buying slip solution and have to say that it really does work VERY well.

Rubbing alcohol thins the gel, though, and can make it run a little which makes it a bit more difficult to control.

The biggest issues I’ve had with these is peeling up which could be due to the texture of my natural nails, human error (don’t get it on your cuticles or it peels up faster), the kit not coming with two more products I’ve seen recommended (nail drying solution and a primer that goes under the base coat), or the fact that I’m constantly using my hands and they tend to be wet pretty often.

Also they’re very difficult to trim if you don’t have a really good set of clippers that open wider than usual, and I didn’t.

I am very impressed by these.

Because I liked that pink glitter gel so much I ended up burning through it pretty quickly because I kept having to re-re-redo my nails due to not knowing what I was doing.

So, since Phoenixy doesn’t appear to sell individual gels, I ordered another smaller set of gels by Meet Across that looked to have a similar color in it.

Again, sales pictures tend to be deceiving.

This is the pink (CU14), which isn’t pink at all. It’s clear gel with clear holographic glitter.

While I am disappointed in the color, I do like some holohexies, and Meet Across’s gel is a little dryer which meant that it took a little more pressure to spread with the brush, but wasn’t nearly as sticky and was overall easier to maneuver.

... Ignore where I missed a spot. I’m still figuring this all out and the clear gel is difficult for me to see. I also should have cut all of my natural white off before applying but was happy that it had grown at all.

Of course, the biggest question for me was whether or not polygel nails would cause my natural nails to separate from my nail bed.

Yes, after a while my nails did start to peel off.

🕊️- 3 habits you have?

I'll start off with my makeup routine! I have a particular way I like to do it: after skincare, sunscreen → primer → concealer (usually my under eyes and a little bit around my nose since I'm a little reddish in that area). I let that sit for a minute then move to  → brows, usually a tinted brow gel or sometimes a pencil if I don't feel like using gel  → back to concealer. After it's been sitting, I blend it out with a sponge  → (optional) eyeshadow if I have extra time or feel fancy that day, but I usually keep it light with one color. I'm medium skin-toned so I usually do a light brown or a mauve   → (optional) liquid liner. I've been using Asian-owned or Asian beauty brands like Em Cosmetics or Kiss Me (Heroine Make) for eyeliner because I have smaller eyes, and I need a really fine tip liner (0.1mm) to get a wing. I have oily skin so pencil smudges easily, and the tip is usually too fat for my eyes since I have small eyes. I find liquid works best.  → mascara! Takes me some time because I always get it on my eyelids lol, but that's what q-tips are for to clean up after. I normally do one coat but sometimes I'll do two if I want something extra.  → blush! Even though I'm oily-skinned, I prefer cream blushes because they blend out nicer for me, but I do use a powdered blush on top for extra staying power. Sometimes I'll use my lipsticks as blush too!  → (optional) small highlighter if I'm feeling fancy  → lip liner. I have smaller lips but I stick to nude shades like a mauve or a pinky one  → lip balm/lip gloss. I don't wear lipstick as much as I used to, and I've been really liking tinted lip balms. Or I might use a clear gloss on top. A trick I use to not get my clear gloss stained with my lip liners, I add a bit of it on the back of my hand and then use my finger to tap it on.  → (optional) lipstick/lip tints. If I want more staying power I'll do lipstick, usually a warm terra cotta brown, or a rosy mauve shade. On special occasions I have a vintage warm blood red shade from Besame that I love to use.  → powder, powder, powder! I'm oily-skinned and if I don't powder then everything will be melted off by lunch. Even on days I don't wear makeup, I still powder because I will look like a disco ball by noon. I have tried the dewy K-beauty look and I look like a grease ball, even with powder. I'm stacking on powder as if it's still 2016. → setting spray. I haven't used one in a long time but a friend of mine got me a Nyx setting spray and it really helped keep my makeup on, even with how oily I get. While it's not 100% matte, it doesn't melt my makeup off which I appreciate. In total it takes me anywhere from 10-20 minutes. 10 if I'm doing the basics and getting ready for work, 20 if I have extra time and I take my time, especially doing eyeshadow.

Second- every few days, I like to journal in my bullet journal. I write about 2-3 pages every few days to talk about what I did the past few days so I can remember everything, or even just to write my feelings out. I use my bujo as a personal journal since I'm not in school anymore, but I like decorating it with washi tapes and stickers.

Third - I clean out my junk mail in my email. Most of it is from department stores or other stores that I get weekly newsletters from. Most people delete them right away but I like to skim through them before deleting because sometimes I'll find a coupon or early access sale. Even if I don't get anything, I like to keep them handy just in case before deleting it. I also hate seeing the notifications in my inbox

Ooh this is a good one! I didn't realize how important smell was until I got COVID for the first time in November and I lost my sense of smell for almost two months (I was still able to taste a little bit). Not to be a ✨California Girl✨ but sea salt- I don't live far from the beach and the smelling the salt from the ocean breeze is comforting to me. I'm not a big beach person because our water is cold since it comes from Alaska, but the smell of it is comforting to me and reminds me of the times when I was a kid that my parents would take my sister and me to have picnics at the beach.

💖- have you ever been in love?

I might have. When I was 15, I had a crush on one of my friends. We were both so young and honestly I see myself as heteromantic, or demisexual. I'm attracted to men but I did feel something for my friend that time that I can't quite explain- it wasn't quite romantic where I wanted to be her gf, but it was deeper than platonic for sure. We fell out of touch a few years ago and I think about her from time to time, and I hope she's doing okay.

There was a guy I dated in college when I was 21. I don't like to talk about him much, but now that I'm 26, I realize there were a lot of things in our relationship that was not okay that I would actively deny because I didn't know how to cope. He was my first relation/situationship, and I'm not even the same age as he was when he met me. I think the best way to describe my relationship with him is the entirety of All Too Well (both 5 and 10 minute version) by Taylor Swift (Red is my comfort album). I was 21 and I did briefly envision a future with him before the heartbreak.

I was talking to one of my high school friends yesterday about it and how I didn't tell anyone my trauma for 2 years, and she said something that struck with me where she said "maybe you didn't say anything for 2 years because you needed to grieve. 2 years isn't long, but 2 years of grief can feel like a lifetime."
