Hello bookworms!

Today I am here with my March reading & blogging wrap-up.  As I’m sure you all can relate, March was a LONG month.

Let’s get into what I read & blogged in March…

March 13th was the day my entire life came to a halt.  This was the last day of school for my children, and the last day my library was open.  Since I live in Ohio, we’ve been practicing social distancing for close to a month now.  Ohio acted early in response to COVID-19 and seems to be faring better than many of the states surrounding us.

I have so much to be thankful for during this difficult time…  So far my family has avoided illness since we’ve been able to “shelter in place.”  My extended family has also managed to stay healthy, even my mother & sister-in-law who both work in the health care field.  Unfortunately, I have had a few friends fall ill, but thankfully they have recovered.  I still have my job, and am still receiving my hourly wage for all hours I would have worked had the library not shut down.  My husband is able to work from home during this time.  I fully realize how fortunate we are.  My heart aches for the world during these times of uncertainty.

What have I been doing over this month at home?  I’ve been helping my children while they are distance learning, spring cleaning my house, reading middle grade books, doing webinars, and making cloth masks to donate to local essential businesses & health care providers in need.  Basically I am keeping myself as busy as possible to keep anxiety at bay.

» The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo

A collection of deliciously dark short stories are inspired by classic fairytales & folklore.  I LOVED these stories!  They gave me Neil Gaiman vibes, so if you are a NG fan, I’d recommend these stories to you.  I also adored the illustrations throughout that really enhanced the story.

» What If It’s Us? by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera

This was a sugar sweet YA romance.  If you enjoyed Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, you’ll also enjoy this one too.

» The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

*4.5 Stars*

One of the best thrillers I’ve read, and I’m not a big thriller fan.  I did see one of the big twists coming, but it did not hinder my enjoyment.  I’m sure this will be turned into a movie at some point.

» Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts

*4.5 Stars*

This was a lovely historical fiction about Maud Gage Baum, wife of the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – L. Frank Baum.  I have never read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but this book made me want to read it ASAP!  This was a wonderful book to read for Women’s History Month!

» Girls Resist! A Guide to Activism, Leadership, and Starting a Revolution by KaeLyn Rich

This was a wonderful field guide for teens (and adults) to become involved in activism.  I found the information to be very practical, informative, and accessible.

» Beyond the Bright Seaby Lauren Wolk

This was a beautiful MG historical fiction book about identity & family.  I am a sucker for eccentric characters and unconventional families, so this book hit the right notes.

» Far From the Tree by Robin Benway

Far From the Tree is a beautiful YA contemporary about adoption, family, identity, and love.  Told in 3 different perspectives, I enjoyed the journey & development of each of these characters.

 » You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P! by Alex Gino

After reading George, I knew I wanted to read more of Gino’s work.  You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P! centers around Jilly, a young girl who is learning about hearing difficulties and ASL after it is discovered that her baby sister is hearing impaired.  The best part of this book was learning more about the deaf/hearing impaired and the difficulties that this community faces in a world that is geared towards the hearing.  The hearing impairment representation was well done and handled with care.

» Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove #1) by Shelby Mahurin

While I can definitely see why people are loving this book, it came up a bit short for me.  The storyline focused too heavily on the romance.  This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy the romance, just that I don’t care for fantasy books where the romance is the central plot.  The world-building was also lacking.

» We’re Not From Here by Geoff Rodkey

Don’t let the fact that this is a MG sci-fi fool you.  This was a powerful social commentary on immigration & the ways that media can skew perspective.

» The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan

I was pleasantly surprised with the depth to this book.  The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali  tackles heavy topics like problematic family dynamics, homophobia, discrimination, arranged marriage, cultural differences, identity, etc.  I loved seeing all the Bengali culture woven throughout the book – food, dress, customs, etc.  I had a few complaints with regards to the plot, Arianna’s characterization, and how things were tided up a little too nicely, but overall a solid read.

Technically I was at 35 books at the end of March, but I had already logged two books for April by the time I took a screenshot of my Goodreads challenge.

FROM CRUEL OPTIMISM BY LAUREN BERLANT, ANALYSIS OF “Was” (1992) by Geoff Ryman

What she comes back with is a lie, a wish. Her dog, Toto, had been murdered by her aunt and uncle, who hated him and who had no food to spare for him. But the story she hands in to the substitute is a substitute: it is about how happy she and Toto are. It includes sentences about how they play together and how exuberant he is, running around yelping “like he is saying hello to everything” (174). Imaginary Toto sits on her lap, licks her hand, has a cold nose, sleeps on her lap, and eats food that Auntie Em gives her to give him. The essay suggests a successful life, a life where love circulates and extends its sympathies, rather than the life she actually lives, where “it was as if they had all stood back-to-back, shouting ‘love’ at the tops of their lungs, but in the wrong direction, away from each other” (221). It carries traces of all of the good experience Dorothy has ever had. The essay closes this way: “I did not call him Toto. That is the name my mother gave him when she was alive. It is the same as mine” (175)...

In Was Baum goes on to write The Wizard of Oz as a gift of alternativity to the person who can’t say or do anything to change her life materially, and who has taken in so much that one moment of relief from herself produces a permanent crack in the available genres of her survival. In “What is a Minor Literature?” Deleuze and Guattari exhort people to become minor in exactly that way, to de-territorialize from the normal by digging a hole in sense like a dog or a mole (1990). Creating an impasse, a space of internal displacement, in this view, shatters the normal hierarchies, clarities, tyrannies, and confusions of compliance with autonomous individuality... For Dorothy Gael, in Was, the optimism of attachment to another living being is itself the cruelest slap of all.

It’s shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! Very clear sound throughout.

Tying New Orleans’ Threads

She was known among the Threadheads as rowEN, arguably a more intimate name than her real one, Michelle Bannister. That’s how it’s been with the Threadheads, people known to each other by their screen names, sometimes more than their real ones, though it’s not exactly a secret identity. Many Threadheads have met each other in real life. Well, at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the event around this social group coalesced. So not really real life.

Michelle’s Facebook page reflects that, a world as we’d want it, full of all that color, a vivid collection of music, friendship, vibrant clothing and flowers and hearts and blue skies.  But no matter how hard we hold onto that, the real real world intrudes. Floods happen. Illnesses. And deaths. Michelle/rowEN died earlier this month of liver disease. Threadheads mourned around the globe, from her Alabama home to Australia and the U.K., people with whom she had shared the joys of New Orleans, the love of music, the love of life. Tributes and notes of sorrow came on Facebook and on the JazzFest online forum, where the Threadheads came together in the first place and continue to commune. The very name of this community refers to the discussion “threads” on the site.

Well, rather than let the intruding real world mute the colors of Threadheadville, Threadheads work to brighten that outside world. Yesterday I spent a couple of hours on a conference call with a few Threadheads, poring over and assessing dozens of applications for grants to be given by the Threadhead Cultural Foundation. The applicants range from musicians — funk bands, jazz bands, singer-songwriters, a soul-gospel chorus — to dance troupes to filmmakers to authors to arts education camps and school programs to Mardi Gras Indians preparing for the next season’s parades and song battles. The grants aren’t huge, a maximum of $5,000 each to a total of $40,000 awarded. But each award represents a seed to the growth of New Orleans’ vital cultural landscape, a brick in the foundation of the city’s future, an act of faith and hope. And love.

It’s a manifestation of the spirit this ragtag bunch of people have had since they first started sharing tips on the forum about music, hotels, restaurants, life, from the first time nearly 20 years ago on a Tuesday between the JazzFest weekends they had a backyard party — “Patry,” as they came to call it in their own curious patois — at one of the local’s houses, getting a New Orleans brass band to play and collecting cash at the gate to pay the musicians. The Patry grew into a real thing, bigger each year. And so did the group’s purpose, with a broader view of support for the city, its attributes and its people.

Then the 2005 flood hit, and everything changed. Threadheads stepped up in various ways, with the foundation’s grants and even a record label — a pioneering micro-loan, fan-funded endeavor that allowed dozens of artists struggling to regain their lives to record and release music. Among the initial artists were former Cowboy Mouth guitarist Paul Sanchez (one of the city’s finest songwriters, who has become a mentor to many younger musicians), jazz-soul singer John Boutté (who became internationally recognized via his boisterous song “Treme,” used as the theme of the HBO series of the same name) and Susan Cowsill (yes, of the Cowsills). Sanchez even wrote a song, “Be a Threadhead” (see below), extolling the spirit of the community, and his and writer Colman DeKay’s songcycle based on journalist Dan Baum’s book “Nine Lives,” portraits of nine New Orleansians in the time from 1964’s Hurricane Betsy to 2005’s Katrina, expanded the Threadhead musical reach. (I connected with this as a journalist writing about the label and then became part of the label’s advisory board, and now serve on the grants screening committee.)

The label faded as crowdfunding grew (and CD sales fell), but the foundation is going strong. Funding comes via Patry tickets — the event has gotten big, with some top local acts and great food — and a related raffle of various items contributed by local business and Threadhead regulars, and of course just good ol’ regular donations to the cause. In recent years there’s also been a pre-JazzFest Threadhead Thursday concert in City Park. And at JazzFest itself, there’s a spot designated for (or commandeered by) Threadheads to meet up, to hang out, to connect the secret identity with the real one. Whichever’s which.

But, arguably, it’s what happens the rest of the year that gives this group meaning, as they share about their lives and loves, mark birthdays (and births, of kids, grandkids, great-grandkids), ask for healing wishes when there’s an illness and, yes, mourn deaths. And if you know New Orleans culture, you know that deaths are mourned but the lives of those gone are celebrated with verve and vigor, memories not allowed to fade, and works done in their honor. Death is greeted with singing and dancing and parades — the famed second-lines.

It’s with that spirit that the Threadhead Cultural Foundation every year makes one of its grants specifically for a live musical event, the award established in honor of a dedicated Threadhead, Buddy Mann, a musician himself, after his death, and in memory of all Threadheads who have passed on, rowEN just the latest in that august number. There are several candidates this year eminently worthy of those we know by their Threadhead names.

Oh, and speaking of: Call me Baconwrapped.

Seis rasgos que definen a un emprendedor

Parece un lugar común decir que todos podemos llegar a líderes o que con unos ajustes, es posible convertirse en empresarios

Lo cierto es que así es, aunque a veces, por dejar pasar el tiempo, no salir de la zona de confort, olvidamos que sí podemos soñar y superar los obstáculos. El experto en temas de liderazgo empresarial y editor principal de la revista Fortune, Geoff Colvin, identificó tres factores clave que pueden hoy hacer la diferencia para las empresas en tiempos de incertidumbre. Esos factores también los ven las organizaciones en quienes dirigen sus equipos y usted los puede adaptar para sacar adelante una idea de negocio propia. Así lo publica el portal web colombiano Finanzas Personales.

Colvin, que se ha dedicado a observar y estudiar el mundo empresarial, logró establecer, trabajando junto con los líderes de grandes empresas a nivel mundial, los tres factores presentes en las compañías exitosas: la innovación, la integración de todas las partes de la empresa y la construcción de nuevas herramientas de alto valor.

Según Colvin un modelo de negocio innovador es fundamental y logra impulsar los negocios en medio de un panorama de incertidumbre tanto a nivel político como económico. “Innovar es lo más difícil para las empresas, especialmente las más grandes y ya establecidas, pero cambiar el modelo es sin duda alguna exitoso” señaló.

En diferentes estudios se ha investigado qué tienen en su personalidad las personas innovadoras y emprendedoras. Le contamos algunas de las que parecen ser las más comunes y que salen a relucir en la mayor parte de las investigaciones. Las cualidades fueron tomadas de un artículo de Victoria Nadal y Olivia López Bueno, para el diario El País y que fueron replicadas por www.weforum.org.

1. Se motivan y logran cosas

Tienen en el ADN la disposición de aprender para superar los retos y alcanzar las metas. Un libro de Robert Baum, Michael Frese y Robert Baron sobre ‘Psicología del emprendimiento’ afirma que es uno de los pilares básicos para triunfar y explica que “es imprescindible tener en cuenta la motivación de logro si se quiere entender cómo se desarrolla el éxito”.

2. Son innovadores

Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, todos tienen en común que son empresarios del mundo digital y la innovación es un rasgo que los caracteriza. Este rasgo está asociado al éxito de los emprendimientos. Una persona que sobresale, crea, experimenta es alguien que desafía lo establecido. Quizá el mayor referente actual es Elon Musk, creador de Tesla, quien no se ha quedado quieto y ahora está pensando en viajes a la Luna o Marte, donde cree que las personas irán en menos de 20 años.

3. Autonomía

Si algo tienen en común los emprendedores es que con el paso del tiempo, dejan la empresa para la cual trabajaron. Yves Saint-Laurent, el famoso referente de moda, fue famoso porque decidió emprender y dejar atrás su antiguo empleador, nadie menos que Christian Dior. Pero son muchos los casos, según Baum y sus colegas. A diferencia de los empleados de una oficina, la gente que se atreve a tener algo propio tiene que tomar decisiones en ausencia de sus supervisores y definir objetivos y planes de acción para conseguirlos por sí mismos. Por eso, la gente con autonomía es perfecta para iniciarse en un emprendimiento.

4. Locus de control interno

Es la característica según la cual determina a quién atribuimos los resultados de nuestras acciones. Por eso, se suele atribuir a la gente negativa el hecho de que no son víctimas de lo que les pasa, sino que responsabilizan a los demás. Como cuando escuchamos decir “es que este fulano sí me amarga la vida”, “es que esta empresa vive menospreciando mi labor”. En vez de eso, hay que tener el control de lo que nos pasa, si tenemos un conflicto, preguntémosle qué toca hacer para resolver ese problema con alguien. Si la empresa lo subvalora, busque otro camino, emprenda su propio negocio. Un locus de control interno es el rasgo de un emprendedor. Los que no pueden controlar qué pasa a su alrededor tienen un locus de control externo.

5. Autoeficacia

Es la capacidad relacionada a sentirse capaz de realizar bien el trabajo o la labor que le fue encomendada. La iniciativa emprendedora implica importantes riesgos y dificultades, por lo tanto los emprendedores necesitan altos niveles de autoeficacia que les proporciona seguridad. "Cuando crees que tus acciones tendrán resultados alcanzables, tu incentivo para actuar es mayor", se lee en la investigación de José Carlos Sánchez. Si sientes que eres eficaz, es más probable que perseveres cuando los problemas crecen, busques oportunidades para arreglarlos y tengas más esperanzas de éxito.

6. Son propensos al riesgo

Si va a emprender, por definición tiene que tomar riesgos. En estudios de caso recientes han encontrado que la tolerancia y actitudes positivas hacia el riesgo predicen el éxito del emprendimiento. Si una persona es atrevida a perseguir sus ideas, es más probable que se acerque al éxito que las más cautas y medidas. El emprendedor asume que tiene que tomar las decisiones más complejas y que la incertidumbre es una constante en el mundo de los negocios. Warren Buffet es uno de los millonarios que pone en práctica la toma de decisiones arriesgadas, pero siempre incorpora en su toma de decisiones muchos elementos de análisis.

7. Son proactivos

Un líder inicia y mantiene acciones que alteran el ambiente. Es la definición de proactividad, lo contrario a la reactividad y que toma las decisiones solo cuando ocurren los momentos críticos. El proactivo arma escenarios y planes para diferentes situaciones. Tienen iniciativa, identifican oportunidades, actúan, no esperar, ni se desesperan. La proactividad implica “interés en anticipar y prevenir problemas y una interpretación creativa de las normas".

(Ich bin 31 auf dem Baum) Die folgenden Informationen sind nun ungültig, weil die Clowns bei Flickr die Funktion "Notizen" entfernt haben. Es hat Stunden gedauert, Dutzenden von Fotos Notizen zu machen, und aus einer Laune heraus haben sie alle gelöscht. Ich könnte vor Wut über ihre Aktionen spucken. Wenn Sie auf das Feld über dem Namen einer Person klicken und dann auf den Link klicken, sehen Sie alle Fotos, die ich von dieser Person habe. Wenn es keine klickbare Box gibt, dann habe ich im Moment keine Fotos von dieser Person.  . Später werde ich alle Informationen hinzufügen, die ich über jeden auf dem Baum habe. Alle Namen sind nur Vornamen mit meist einer Initiale für den Nachnamen Familienmitglieder, die Initialen nicht erkennen, sollten mich kontaktieren und ich werde Ihnen eine Liste zur Verfügung stellen. Wenn jemand Fotos hat, die noch nicht auf meinen Flickr-Seiten sind, würde ich mich freuen, sie zu sehen, und ich werde dann zu dem Baum hinzufügen.
