Thursday 9 September 2021 – In the harsh yet beautiful Arctic landscape surrounded by snow and ice, Dorte Mandrup has designed Ilulissat Icefjord Centre on the edge of the UNESCO-protected Greenland wilderness.

Overlooking the Kangia Icefjord on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, the building blends effortlessly into the landscape and offers a unique vantage point from which to experience the astonishing Icefjord and understand the dramatic consequences of climate change on this remarkable landscape.

Described by founder and creative director, Dorte Mandrup as “a snowy owl’s flight through the landscape”, the aerodynamic, light structure of the building appears to levitate over the magnificent, rugged terrain – like an outstretched wing gently touching the bedrock. The shape frames the views towards the fjord while preventing snow build-up and creating a shelter from the snow and freezing winds.

“The Icefjord Centre offers a refuge in the dramatic landscape and aims to become a natural gathering point from which you can experience the infinite, non-human scale of the Arctic wilderness, the transition between darkness and light, the midnight sun, and the Northern lights dancing across the sky,” says Dorte Mandrup.

Designed as a year-round visitor centre and meeting place for local residents, companies, politicians, climate researchers and tourists, the centre will house exhibitions, a film theatre, a café and shop as well as research and educational facilities. It tells the story of ice, of humankind and evolution on both a local and global scale and relates to the history of time – sitting lightly on the Greenlandic bedrock – which is the oldest in the world.

The roof provides a natural extension of the area’s hiking routes, leading visitors onto one of the best look-out spots to see the massive icebergs in the fjord and the surrounding landscape. It Is created as a public space –a kind of gateway between the town of Ilulissat and the wilderness beyond. It is open to the public and free to access. At each end of the building there are also covered spaces, creating shelter, and gathering places.

When the first glimmer of light hits the horizon in January after six weeks of darkness, the community gathers in this area to celebrate the sun coming up for 40 minutes before leaving again. The hope is that the roof will become the place for this important gathering.

An important factor is that the building is as sustainable as possible. It is mainly constructed around a steel frame with the absolute minimum use of concrete – usually the main contributor to the carbon footprint – which also means the structure is extremely lightweight. The lightness of the structure makes the impact on the ancient bedrock and its fragile flora and fauna minimal.

Inside the centre, visitors can learn more about the nature and culture unfolding before their eyes. They can experience the journey of ice from the birth of the ice crystal in Greenland’s cold cloud layer, to when it becomes part of the inland ice and finally moves towards the glacier and breaks off in icebergs. Also, how different Inuit cultures lived under these harsh conditions and how climate change manifests itself in the Arctic landscape.

The exhibition, designed by JAC Studios, consists of a landscape of ice flakes where archeological objects and films are exhibited in ice prisms of glass that visitors can move between. The ice prisms are created from ice blocks collected in the Kangia Ice Fjord, 3D scanned, and mouth blown in glass. Central to the exhibition are authentic ice core drillings taken from the ice sheet, they tell the story about our culture and climate from 124.000 years BC to the present

The Icefjord Centre is funded by a partnership between the Danish philanthropical foundation Realdania, Avannaata Kommunia and Naalakkersuisut – the government of Greenland. The exhibition was furthermore funded by Nordea Foundation, Augustinus Foundation, Bloomberg Philatropies and OAK Foundation.

Studies in both sculpture and natural sciences have influenced Dorte Mandrup’s approach to architecture, which has always been ‘hands-on’. Shape and form constitute the company ethos – to create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, contextually relevant, and invite people to engage.

Dorte Mandrup graduated from the Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark in 1991. Eight years later she founded her Copenhagen-based studio where she continues to be Creative Director. Her design philosophy and artistic yet systematic mindset permeates the entire office as she is design responsible for all projects.

As a humanist with a distinct nonconformist outlook, Dorte Mandrup is well known for her commitment to the development of the architectural practice and her frequent participation in public debates. Receiving national and international acclaim for her work, in 2018 Dorte headlined at the curated international exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia.

Dorte is Vice Chairman of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, member of the Historic Buildings Council in Denmark, Chair of the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award 2019, Adjunct Professor at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and holds frequent visiting professorships abroad, in 2018 at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning and in 2021 at Mendrisio Accademia de Architettura.

Feb 27, 2021: Achterbahn - aber ich drehe weitere Runden!

Meine lieben Blogleserinnen und –leser: zuerst einmal ein riesiges Dankeschön für alle inspirierenden und aufmunternden Worte, die ihr mir über die verschiedenen Kanäle geschrieben habt zur Eröffnung des Marere College! Es tut einfach gut, die Unterstützung einer Community zu haben und – Internet sei Dank – ich fühle, dass ihr teilweise richtig mitfiebert und das gibt mir die Energie, die es braucht um das hier zu machen.

Ich bin in den letzten Wochen durch diverse Gefühle gegangen: von „Das ist das Coolste und Nachhaltigste, was ich je in meinem Leben gemacht habe“ bis zu „ich kann nicht mehr: ich schmeisse alles hin, packe meinen Mann unter den Arm und fliege retour in die Schweiz – für immer“!!!

Ich gehe nicht in jedes Detail ein, denn das würde euch langweilen, aber ich möchte euch ein bisschen Hintergrundinfos geben damit ihr sieht was es braucht und wie man manchmal auch ganz naiv in etwas Schlittern kann…

Pro Ganze hat ursprünglich die gesamte Bevölkerung von Ganze im Visier, daher auch der Name. Peter war ja als Member of Parliament für den ganzen Wahlkreis zuständig. So haben wir immer gemeinsam entschieden, welches Projekt als nächstes unterstützt wird von uns. Als Peter 2017 abgewählt wurde war für uns klar, dass wir unsere Projekte etwas einschränken würden und dass wir uns vor allem geografisch auf Jaribuni (Kauma) beschränken würden, da die Leute hier für Peter sind und ihn nicht auch noch bekämpfen wie in anderen Regionen. Einzig das Projekt Kindertagesstätte Goshene ist noch ausserhalb von Jaribuni, denn das Ehepaar Wieser hat sich von Anfang an dafür eingesetzt und konzentriert ihren Einsatz dort drauf. Als dann Olivia schwanger wurde konnte sie nicht mehr jedes Jahr nach Kenia kommen, auch Onkel Peter ist noch in Thailand und in seinem Wohnort Eglisau mit Freiwilligenarbeit aktiv und kann daher auch nicht jedes Jahr kommen und auch bei mir war es bis zur Frühpensionierung nicht so klar wie oft ich in Zukunft vor Ort sein kann. Und weil nur Projekte funktionieren, die auch begleitet werden haben wir uns entschieden, vor allem in Marere weiterzumachen und ein College aufzubauen. Dafür war auch die letzte grosse Sammelaktion für die neue Küche eingesetzt. Olivia, Onkel Peter und ich wollten dann, dass das College mit Nähen und Computer beginnt, da wir ja die Maschinen für beide Jobs haben. Wir mussten dann aber alle drei schnell merken, dass wir das Thema jetzt aus der Hand geben müssen, da sich die Leute vor Ort darum kümmern, sprich: Lizenzen einholen, Abklärungen machen, Lehrer rekrutieren, Bauten anpassen etc. etc. wir kriegten zwar Unterstützung von Peter’s Sohn John Baraka aber das war für uns alles ein bisschen zu weit entfernt. Weil wir unser College mit der offiziellen TVETA registrieren lassen wollen um anerkannt zu sein heisst es plötzlich, dass wir mindestens 10 Berufsausbildungen anbieten müssen und in jedem Beruf mindestens 10 Studenten haben müssen. Plötzlich schreiben wir also eine ganze Menge Berufe aus, wissen aber noch nicht, wie wir die Lehrer oder die Studenten dafür kriegen sollen. Aber alle sagen: don’t worry, wir kriegen die Lehrer, don’t worry, wir werden viele Studenten haben. Wenn wir erst mal registriert sind dann werden sie uns Leute aus dem ganzen Land schicken. Aber das ist ja gar nicht das, was wir wollen. Wir wollen der lokalen Bevölkerung helfen. Für mich geht das alles zu weit, aber wir stecken jetzt mittendrin.

Nebst diesen Hürden kommen noch die politischen Probleme dazu: viele können sich gar nicht vorstellen, dass in diesem Community Center wirklich ein College ist. Sie erzählen sich (bzw. die Gegner von Peter verteilen die Gerüchte), dass Peter das nur macht, weil er Stimmen fangen will, dass er das Geld selber einstecken will etc. Das ist für mich das Zermürbendste: nicht nur, dass wir etwas für die Bevölkerung machen, nein: die Bevölkerung selber (sprich die Gegner und die Politiker) zerstören ihre eigene Möglichkeit auf eine Ausbildung. Das bringt mich manchmal fast dazu zu sagen: wisst ihr was: bleibt doch in eurem Dreck hocken, wenn ihr nicht wollt, dann lasst es sein. Wir geben keine Handouts und Freebies mehr: ihr hattet die Chance, ihr habt sie nicht genutzt, jetzt suhlt euch einfach in eurem eigenen Elend. Und dann denke ich wieder: aber die jungen Menschen, die mit Recht auf eine bessere Zukunft hoffen, die haben es verdient, dass man ihnen diese Chance bietet und so raffe ich mich wieder auf und arbeite an dieser Vision.

Seit ich hier bin im Dezember wurde ich plötzlich zur Hauptverantwortlichen des ganzen College. Zuerst habe ich die Webseite erstellt www.marerecollege.com und hatte viel Spass dabei und sogar viel gelernt, was ich in Zukunft sicher auch brauchen kann. Ich berufe Sitzungen ein, ich organisiere die Buchhaltung, die Stundenpläne, ich kaufe Material, sponsore T-Shirts, organisiere alles Drum und Dran und merke: die sind hier vollkommen überfordert mit dem Thema. Das Dumme am Ganzen: ich habe ein viel zu grosses Verantwortungsgefühl. Ich kann die Dinge nicht einfach schlittern lassen und ich will dieses Projekt unbedingt zum Laufen bringen, denn es ist für diese Gegend auch dringend notwendig, dass es eine Bildung gibt, die funktioniert und die nicht einfach nur mit Pro Forma Zettel Zertifikaten funktioniert. Im Städtchen Jaribuni gibt es nämlich eine Computerschule, die von der lokalen Regierung finanziert wird und die haben nicht einmal Strom, geschweige denn Laptops – ja sie haben noch nicht einmal geeignete Räume und sie haben viele Studenten für eine Computerausbildung. Einfach, weil es von der Regierung bezahlt wird. Aber diese Leute werden am Schluss ihrer Ausbildung absolut nichts können und werden nirgends einen Job finden, wie sie unfähig sein werden einen Laptop aufzumachen!!! Wir hingegen haben Solarstrom, geeignete Räume, Laptops und Nähmaschinen für jede Studentin, Internet und ein Restaurant – es sind bereits schon Welten im Vergleich.

Ich habe mir jetzt gesagt: in der Zeit in der ich hier bin coache ich, bin ich Lehrerin für IT, Life Skills, Kommunikation und alles, was ich kann und dann müssen sie selber weitermachen. Ich möchte, dass dies eine Erfolgsgeschichte wird aber ich bin auch bereit zu sagen: wenn ihr das nicht selber schafft, dann ist es vielleicht auch nicht das Richtige für euch.

Wir kriegen noch ein bisschen Hilfe von links und rechts, müssen aber auch aufpassen, dass wir nicht über den Tisch gezogen werden von denen, die Hilfe anbieten und danach doch nur die hohle Hand machen. Es ist ein konstantes Abwägen, auch mal ein Reinfallen und immer wieder ein Krone richten, aufstehen und weiter gehen.

In der Nacht bevor wir begonnen haben schlief ich kaum. Ich sah noch so viele Probleme vor mir: Berge an ungelösten Problemen, offene Fragen, mangelnde Unterlagen. Aber alle, die mich kennen, bzw. schon Kurse bei mir besucht haben wissen: die müssen einfach „perfekt“ sein und das ist hier schlichtweg gar nicht möglich. Nur schon die klimatischen Bedingungen: ab und zu steigt der Strom aus und wir müssen auf Solar stellen (immerhin haben wir Solar!!!), während des Unterrichts im Raum ohne Fenster und Türen hörst du plötzlich die Kühe brüllen, weil sie zur Tränke kommen, dauernd fliegen riesige Krähen rum und machen dermassen Lärm, dass man sein eigenes Wort nicht mehr versteht und die Hitze, die killt mich fast. Wenn ich nach 10 Minuten Schule geben schon tropfe und mir die Kleider nur so am Leib kleben, dann ist es einfach ein ganz spezieller Effort, der zur nomalen Arbeit noch dazu kommt. Quasi „physical hardship“!!!

Aber – ich glaube es kaum – wir haben die erste Woche hinter uns. Alle Lehrer hatten wunderschöne Polo-Shirts gekriegt (meines wurde von der Nählehrerin in der Nacht vom Sonntag auf den Montag noch mit „Extensions“ versehen, weil meine Figur sich einfach nicht für T-Shirts eignet…), wir waren am ersten Tag alle da für die Einführung und die Schülerinnen und Schüler waren alle überpünktlich bis pünktlich – das ist für Kenia eine echte Leistung. Wir haben die Schweizer Kuhglocke geläutet und alle kamen immer wieder pünktlich nach der Pause retour.

Sie dürfen hier alle das gereinigte Wasser geniessen aber Essen müssen sie zuhause oder von zuhause bringen. Sobald wir jemand haben, der das Restaurant führt werden sie auch hier das Essen kaufen können. Aber wir bieten jetzt zuerst mal allen Studenten, egal ob sie später Elektriker, Schneider, IT Fachleute oder Beauty Therapists (für diese 4 Richtungen haben wir Einschreibungen gekriegt) werden wollen eine Einführung in Computer. Wir sind der Meinung, dass sie sich damit abheben können von der Konkurrenz und unser Ziel ist es, dass die Menschen selbstständig bzw. self-reliant werden nach der Ausbildung. Sie sollen selber ein Geschäft beginnen können und so ihre Lebensbedingungen aufwerten.

Da ich ja auch eine PC Supporterin bin gebe ich zusammen mit Neema die Einführung in Computer und coache gleichzeitig Neema, die eine so feine Stimme hat, dass sie nicht bis hinten im Raum gehört werden kann. Somit habe ich da gewissermassen eine Doppelrolle. Ich helfe den Lehrern, ihre Lektionen aufzubereiten, denn das System hier ist einiges anders als wir das kennen oder ich mir das vorstelle:

Alle sind hier mit einem Block und einem Kugelschreiber und schreiben Wort für Wort auf, was der Lehrer sagt: Simon sagt also z.B. A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. Das sagt er so, weil er es auch so gelernt hat. Und je nach Wissensstand liest er es auch genau so von seinen Notizen ab und kann es auch nicht weiter erläutern. Dann wiederholt er es oder schreibt es an die Wandtafel (die ihren Namen auch nicht wirklich verdient, weil sie ein Holperbrett ist mit schwarzer Farbe und man die Kreide darauf kaum sieht…). Sie fragen nochmal nach bis jede und jeder es genau so aufgeschrieben hat. Dann fragt er nach: A computer is a device that??? und die Schüler müssen wiederholen: „manipulates information, or data“. Was aber ein Device ist oder was Data ist – na ja, das bleibt dann offen. Jetzt könnt ihr euch vorstellen, wie sehr das Konzept von RAM oder ROM einsinkt. Aber ich kann jetzt nicht das System vollkommen ändern – ich werde da meinen Einfluss Schritt für Schritt einbringen.

Ich zeige ihnen also auch, dass sie Kurzfilme aus dem Internet zeigen können, dass sie Fotos aus dem Internet runterladen können und mit dem Beamer auf der Grossleinwand zeigen können. Aha, stimmt, das wäre auch noch eine gute Idee!!! Am 4. Tag schaffen sie es auf jeden Fall schon, ihren Namen, ihre Telefonnummer und ihre ID im Laptop in ein Dokument zu schreiben und es auf dem Desktop abzuspeichern. Erfolgserlebnis pur!!!

Wir machen in der ersten Woche sogar schon einen kleinen Test über die ersten Lektionen und ich bin überrascht, wie toll sie schon Antworten geben. Ich habe aber mindestens die Fragen auch auf Swahili übersetzt für alle, die der englischen Sprache nicht wirklich mächtig sind. Die coolste Antwort auf die Frage: What is a hardcopy war ja dann wirklich: A copy that is very hard. Ja gut, ich habe ihnen ja gesagt, sie sollen keine Antwort auslassen, denn das könnte ja noch Punkte geben.

Am Freitag sind jeweils „Life Skills“ angesagt und am Donnerstag wissen wir noch nicht, was wir dann sagen sollen und so biete ich an, dass ich einen Input über die Schweiz, das Bildungssystem etc. machen werde. Ok, das muss ich jetzt noch vorbereiten, denn ich bin ja ganz schlecht in Geschichte und auch über die Regierung kann man mich jetzt nicht im Detail abfragen. Aber nach unserer Pro Ganze Sitzung um 11.00 Uhr nachts mache ich die Präsentation noch bereit. Ich habe einiges vorbereitet über unser Land, die Exporte, die Tiere, den Sport, das Wetter und ich habe auch vorgerechnet, was ein Durchschnittsschweizer verdient und dass halt am Ende nicht viel Geld übrig bleibt und dass wir unsere Sicherheit und unsere Gesundheit irgendwie auch mit Geld „kaufen“ – dafür sind wir das 3. glücklichste Land in der Welt (Kenia ist auf Platz 83) und doch sind die Leute manchmal so saumässig unglücklich und motzen was das Zeugs hält… Aber es war doch auch gut, damit sie sehen: nicht jeder Muzungu, der ihnen begegnet ist einfach reich…

Das wird natürlich der beste Tag der Woche: für mich und für die Schüler und somit erkläre ich auch zu Beginn was TGIF (thank God it’s Friday) heisst. Sie sind froh, müssen sie nicht über Kabel lernen (shielded and unshielded Twisted Pair…) und ich kann aus dem Vollen schöpfen. Ich habe sie gebeten Fragen mitzubringen und davon haben sie eine ganze Menge: wie ist das Bildungssystem, das Government, was essen und trinken die Schweizer, wie verheiratet man sich, wie wird man begraben etc. etc. Dinge des Lebens halt. Ich habe in der Nacht noch die Idee, dass ich eine Zoom Session mit Olivia und Onkel Peter schalten könnte. Onkel Peter ist Rentner und daher ausgebucht aber Olivia bietet an, da mitzumachen. Um 13.00 Uhr kenianischer Zeit machen wir diese Zoom Session und die wird ein voller Erfolg, ja gewissermassen das Highlight der ganzen Woche.

Sie fragen sie dann gleich direkt, wie sie ihren Mann kennengelernt hat und sind erstaunt, dass die Eltern nicht im Prozess involviert waren und dass Martin auch nichts „bezahlen“ musste für Olivia bzw. für ihre Mitgift (eigentlich auch ein krass doofes Wort…). Ihr Sohn Lias kommt dann auch noch auf den Bildschirm und fragt: was sind das fürigi? Ach bin ich dankbar, so tolle Freundinnen zu haben. Ich würde übrigens auch in den nächsten 2 Wochen gerne solche Zoom Calls machen. Wenn du gut Englisch sprichst und irgendwann zwischen 08.00 – 12.00 Uhr etwa 20 Minuten Zeit hast an den nächsten 2 Freitagen dann melde dich gerne bei mir!

Aber als Abschluss gibt es natürlich noch ein 2. Highlight und das ist mein Rüeblicake. Der Magen muss gefüllt sein und dann gehen alle sehr sehr zufrieden nachhause nach einer ersten erfolgreichen Woche.

Adventures in America, the Beautiful | #46 | October 2020

With Thanksgiving 2020 here at the time of writing, I reflect with gratitude on adventures I've enjoyed this year in America. Not even a global pandemic keeps me from finding moments to love and to share.

In these tales, I bring you on journeys around America's West!

As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I’d often received questions from community members asking me about my country, the States. It's so big with such diverse people from diverse places. One of my favorite aspects of America is its national and state parks. Of the former, I'd said in an interview, "These are bastions of treasured beauty."

Like my earlier October 2020 story, today's tale highlights many months! The pandemic has led me back to parks as a physically distant way to enjoy our nation's wonders with minimal risk. I loved how even within the States, one can travel just a fraction of the country to feel in someplace unique. I’ll share about journeys to natural places in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, California and Oregon.

May 2020 with Relatives and National Parks

My youngest brother, who’d turned 18 in November, graduated high school as my last sibling. To commemorate the occasion, an uncle and aunt on our dad’s side who were also my sisters’ godparents flew from Kansas into Vegas to see us.

Our relatives always brought such goofy cheer. When my siblings and I were little, they'd take us on adventures or out to eat at places where our parents usually didn’t. As we grew up, these began to include national parks trips. I felt so excited.

The last time our relatives had visited when I was stateside, they visited when I was graduating college. At that time, they'd invited my younger siblings on a trip to parks I wanted to see, but I didn’t get to go. They might have thought that I was busy, packing and goodbyes. They were probably right, though I really love a good trip.

Well, with the pandemic, my time’s been freer, so I felt grateful to get to come!

With Memorial Day in Week 12 (May 22–28), we witnessed distant stars and trees hundreds-of-years-old at Great Basin National Park (Nev.), hiked by towering cacti in Saguaro (Ariz.) and saw epic rock formations of Capitol Reef (Utah). As usual, I took copious photos.

In Arizona, we also visited the family of another of Dad's siblings, who’d moved there. Our aunt had just received her doctoral degree! I felt reassured about grad school aspirations. A cousin and uncle were kind as ever, too.

Overall, I loved the trip and our conversations. My siblings and I had this wild time when we drove in an area so remote that it reminded me of Mongolia. (Eek!) In many ways, I'd still felt centered in Mongolia, just visiting the States. After all, I’d only been back a couple months.

Pentecost into June

The next week we had Pentecost, so I reflected on joys and renewals God brought through travels with family. Behind the Holy Triduum and Incarnation, I tend to consider Pentecost my favorite Christian holiday. I love how despite our shortcomings, God renews us to keep striving. 2020's Pentecost Monday fell on the fourth anniversary to when I decided I'd start journaling.

In the following week, I spent my days cleaning through the garage while rewarding myself on mornings with treadmill walks and attempts through a sister’s copy of “Fire Emblem: Three Houses.” Week 14 (June 5–11) ended with Dad’s announcement that he’d married his fiancée, and shortly after I returned to Reno, Nev.

June Memories, Reno and Abroad

During Week 14 (June 5–11), while helping my sister and our friend move into the new house in Reno, I felt a sense of how my primary identity have changed over my life.

With my black sandals, blue jeans and pine/mint green flannel, I felt back in Shanghai. In elementary school, I grew up feeling like a Midwestern American. In junior high and high school, I felt like an Asian American. And by uni, I felt more like a Catholic, Chinese American. Nowadays, though, I feel more like just an American, part of a diverse whole.

When I think about (or people ask me about) places where I might like to live, Shanghai often comes to mind. Though, I feel like given time, I'd like Taipei plenty, too. To my delight, the week after, a friend treated me to local Taiwanese food.

I insist, studying abroad is among the most important activities in which an undergraduate can participate. I suppose this is why, even as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I helped locals and others any time they expressed interest in studying outside their countries.

Moments like these made me realize, perhaps I hadn’t readjusted back to the States much.

Counseling, August 2020

Mental health is a theme of my Honors College alma mater’s 2020-21 academic year. Week 23 (Aug. 7–13) ended with me finally getting a chance to use Peace Corps’ mental health readjustment sessions. I got to see a psychologist and chat about the communications challenges within my family and neurodiversity.

We sat outside at a Starbucks table. At one point, the counselor gestured me to look around, taking in the many around us talking and going by, the cars on the nearby main road, those stopping and starting in the parking lot and entering the drive-through. The counselor described how we’re surrounded by people who struggle to wholeheartedly listen to each other.

My counselor mentioned that sometimes the best choice we can make is to leave those who bring us down, even if they’re our loved ones.

He’d asked how accepting my immediate family was of difference. I hesitated to answer. Still, I remembered my younger sister had been kinder to me in recent months. She’d been studying cognitive science as an undergrad, plus she’d studied in Greater China before the Hong Kong protests evacuated her home. I felt like she was an Ally.

Since I mentioned that I’m Christian, the counselor still advised that I work on my weaknesses if I felt called to it. But, he insisted more that I remember the importance of grace. People do not change people. God changes people.

On a trip to hike around Tahoe, I discussed my findings with my siblings. I've still a tricky time ahead. But, we’ve all tricky times to brave. Wholehearted vulnerability helps us.

National Parks, North

I like the quote, "You must go on adventures to find out where you belong" (Sue Fitzmaurice). Years ago, my high school student council had a wall-sized poster with the quote, which I moved into our writing center after the event. Years later, I still consider adventures vital.

I'd reconnected with friends who had been like mentors to me in high school and uni. Turns out that they've been doing national parks trips. One of the guys had a parks pass. I got an invite and brought my family friend! I recount now our inside joke-laden adventures.

Californian Wonders, September

The weekend starting Week 28 (Sept. 11–17), we saw Lassen Volcanic, Burney Falls and Tahoe’s Emerald Bay. Shockingly, we drove closer to the fires’ sources, but the national parks had better air quality than Reno.

On the drive, my friends and I felt quite impressed any time we passed Smokey Bear labeling Today’s Fire Danger as “Very High” instead of the more common “Extreme.” To some degree, I wondered if apocalyptic skies resemble these.

We witnessed a comically colossal number of national and state forests but also devastated areas. I felt awed to see trees that fires so recently blackened. The sights resembled what I imagined could be a setting fitting for a climactic battle between warriors of good and evil. We drove on.

At Lassen Volcanic, we hiked the scenic Bumpass’ Hell trail. I enjoyed the trees then how Sulfur Works gashed the land. I spoke in Chinese with some folks from San Francisco! Overall, I enjoyed the freedom and exploration with my friends. My family friend brought rice balls, so we had those as our snack by Lassen’s an Emerald Lake. We didn’t find a Cathedral Rock, though.

By sunset, we considered Burney Falls our journey’s highlight. Those colossal falls beneath the world had water pouring from seemingly every pore of the rocks. I loved the soaring trees and the feeling of fresh mist. I remembered a national forest park in Hunan, China, to which my relatives brought me in the summer of 2017. Here and there, we took many, many photos.

Weed, California, and Beyond

Our stop in the college town for “higher learning,” Weed, Calif., was rather comical since the Air Quality Index was 336 (considered ‘hazardous’). But that night that will live in infamy, my friend and I really wanted to catch the legendary Pokémon, Cresselia. So, face masks on, we ventured beyond our motel to raid and capture it. My uni alma mater friend’s refrain about me: “fearless.”

The next morning, we all wanted to see Crater Lake, but with reports of incredibly thick smoke, we accepted that this was not our time. Instead, we returned to Reno, rested, then the last morning visited Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay instead.

I got to hug giant trees, which filled me with joy. I love towering trees. As another of my friends said, their “fat bottom[s] … make the rockin' world go 'round.” We enjoyed listening to Queen, the Beatles and Bon Jovi on our trip.

Coming Home

After the national parks adventures, I’d returned to Vegas. My luggage had returned from Mongolia, so I’d all my belongings once more. Sorting these and Mom’s old belongings, I listened to a Marie Kondo book.

I also had more yard work to do, which gave me more time to reflect on my counselor’s advice to take time away from my family. Living away again could help. I noticed that I often enjoy working with people younger than me. I suppose this relates to my affinity for teaching, during which I usually spend time with young folks. Well, here’s a story.

Pleasant Lil’ Story

A warm Vegas day in Week 30 (Sept. 25–Oct. 1), I was out in the front yard here clipping our palm trees when a large red van approached and parked at my neighbor's. As I continued to work my way around the palms, my back to their yard, I overheard doors rolling back and adults asking children to take inside groceries. I recalled the years when my family was like this before I'd left for college.

“What's your name?” came a high voice. I paused from my trimming and turned. I saw a short blonde girl sitting at the street curb in front of the house, hugging a watermelon.

“Daniel,” I called. Turning back to the palms, I add, "And you?”

She replied her name, which had a long /ā/ sound. For privacy, I’ll refer to her as Rachel. She asked, “Do you have kids?”

Turning to her, I smiled and said no—That's a funny question, I thought to myself. I just live here with my parents, but they're away, I explained.

Still with the child in view, I continued to clip palms. I recalled my Peace Corps service. Children would often ask if I had a girlfriend, haha. Such wonderful curiosity, they have.

Moments later, the girl called inquisitively, “Do you need some help?”

Larger than a beachball looked the watermelon to which the girl's arms clung, so I doubted she could help much. Still, I'd little left to do. I thanked her but respectfully declined.

She still sat at the curb, so I paused. I decided that I might as well chat. I asked how old she was. 8, I learned. She learned I'm 23. I smiled, commenting how it’s easier to remember a name like, “Rachel, eight,” than “Daniel, twenty-three.” The girl giggled.

She went on to number her siblings. She had many. I numbered mine and included my step-siblings. So, she added her parents to prove her family's larger than mine. Ah, children...

She said how her family's having a pool party today, adding that they have a pool. She felt excited because it was their first party.

I worried a little given that we're in a pandemic, so I simply reminded her to stay safe.

I imagined her family must be new here if this was their first party. I asked how long she's lived here. The girl scrunched her face with her head tilted up and turns toward the street, thinking. Then she turned back and said, about a year.

Her house's front door opened, and a woman (perhaps her mother) appeared and called the girl inside. I smiled and waved to both, resuming my work on the palms. Turns out I'd gotten new neighbors during my Peace Corps service.

More interesting to me, though, I felt touched by the girl's simplicity. No wonder we must be like children to enter the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 18:3). Children make better neighbors than us grown-ups.

I’d shared this tale with a few friends later that afternoon, Sept. 26. But, I’d enjoyed this moment enough that I wanted it to come through in a blog story. May it brighten your way, whether you’re religious, spiritual or neither~

Oregonian Crater Lake in All Seasons

Not long after the encounter, I’d returned to Reno for my sister’s confirmation. Starting Week 32 (Oct. 9–15), my national parks friends and I reconvened for another parks weekend. We made this round 2 (and 3) seeking to see Oregon’s Crater Lake.

American weather is wild. When we first came back, not smoke but fog and rain obscured our view. On third and final try, wind and snow challenged our view. Still, we waited. At lucky moments, we glimpsed Wizard Isle within the volcanic crater’s center. We still hiked the epic mountain trail to Garfield Peak. I loved its pine snow, low clouds and whimsy of the outdoor adventure. This reminded me of a trip my siblings and I took this summer to hike near Tahoe.

Amid our Crater Lake challenges, we’d hardly places at which to eat. Thankfully, the day when my friends at driven by my folks’ Reno home to pick me up, my Filipina stepmom was just finishing baking a cake. She insisted that we take the whole cake with us, which one of my friends, also Filipino, recognized as a familiar cultural thing. Well, Tita’s cake staved our starvation.

One more note on diversity! Since my friends and I were traveling through more conservative areas of the county, we decided to watch FOX News. Admittedly we’re fairly liberal, but we value political opinions different from ours. With less than a month before our national elections and the president having just gotten COVID-19 the week before, Americans wondered about his health.

Familiar liberal ideas aren’t the only solutions, nor are they inherently the best ones. By mitigating my biases, I hope to more clearly recognize alternatives. Biblically, one might compare this to Luke 6:42—addressing our faults before faults of others. Well, the trip gave us quite a break from our norms!

My Own Space

After the weekend trip and Fall Retreat at my college parish, I returned to Vegas to continue the yard work and resettling in. Having more to do helped me to feel fulfilled.

Ever since I’d left home for uni during August 2015, I’d no longer had my own bedroom at my family’s house. For the past five years, any time I’d visited home, I’d slept in the guest room, on a living room couch or on beds of my siblings who were away. Even since my return from Peace Corps this has been the case. I suspect on some deeper level, this contributed to why in the months since I’d evacuated from Peace Corps, I still felt this sense that I’m abroad and not quite home.

Well, with word late September that my oldest brother might move home with his girlfriend, the boys’ room would become their room. With our younger siblings in Los Angeles and Reno, that left another room open. So, I began to move into it for my remaining months in America.

Fast-forwarding to early November, I’d brought out my warm thick blanket and felt a touch of my childhood. I hadn't slept with it in this house surely since high school. Dad had bought it in Afghanistan when he was gone, serving the U.S. Army National Guard there.

My blanket’s depiction of the sun in the night became my symbol after Mom’s death. Mom had often called me a sunny boy. Though I’m a morning person, the blanket features too my favorite color, midnight blue. Amazing how these relate.

Good stories are like many Psalms—They end on proverbial high notes.

Holiday Hope

I began October accepting that it may be my last month in the States for a while. I ended it realizing I may have coming some of the best three months in a while!

A stay-inside pandemic Hallowe’en led up to remarkable national elections. The States had had record voter turnout. I think it's wonderful that in this nation people can seek justice when we have disputes. Our country's checks and balances keep society stable.

In other joyful news, my oldest stepsister's son is due mid-December. I imagine his dad will say many a, "Luke ... I am your father." I know I would! Well, both my father and stepmother will be grandparents to grandsons. Since last year, I’d met my half-nephew, from December, I’ll have a step-nephew! Lovely indeed.

And, although I consider driving among my most stressful activities, I’ve committed to retaking my permit test this December. For, I cannot let fears hold me back. I can embrace a fuller life.

Alright, for November’s story, I’ll touch on the national elections and Thanksgiving. Pleasant times! Still, my heart goes out to Mongolia, where they had their first community transmissions of COVID-19. Prayers for acceptance.

I wish you warm feelings this holiday and quote Bon Jovi (2020), “Although I'll keep my social distance, what this world needs is a hug.”

17. Dezember. Nussknacker im La Guardia Performing Arts Center gesehen. Kommt mir spektakulär, fast transhuman vor. Die Asphaltwüste von Queens mit den verrenkten Eisenkonstruktionen vom Subway-Viadukt, die Bühne ist im Community College, groß wie ein Einkaufszentrum, Architektur eines verwahrlosten Flughafens. Die hageren Mütter mit ihren hageren Töchtern, die sich konzentriert über das Programmheft beugen, nicht unähnlich einem NASA-Kontrollzentrum, sowas wie ein Generationenraumschiff. Den Körper auf ein Niveau bringen, das eigentlich menschenunmöglich ist. Und wieder ist kein Aufwand zu hoch, um alles spielend leicht aussehen zu lassen. Ich versteh' es sofort, diesen Traum, in einem anderen, irgendwie gültigeren Universum zu leben, und wenn's nur für die paar Minuten auf der Bühne ist. Es ist überhaupt nicht anders als dieser Wunsch, einen Text zu schreiben, in dem die Wörter endlich richtig zusammen passen.

Liverpool loses Unesco World Heritage status

Liverpool stripped of UNESCO World Heritage status

Liverpool has been stripped of its World Heritage status after a UN committee found developments threatened the value of the city’s waterfront, reports the BBC News. The decision was made following a secret ballot by the UNESCO committee at a meeting in China.

UNESCO had said that the developments, including the planned new Everton FC stadium, had resulted in a “serious deterioration” of the historic site. The decision was described as “incomprehensible” by the city’s mayor.

“Our World Heritage site has never been in better condition having benefitted from hundreds of millions of pounds of investment across dozens of listed buildings and the public realm,” Joanne Anderson said. The decision comes a decade after UNESCO last visited the city to assess building developments in the city centre.

Liverpool becomes only the third site to lose its World Heritage status since the list began in 1978. The other two were Oman’s Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in 2007 and the Dresden Elbe Valley in Germany in 2009.

A total of 20 votes were cast with 13 in favour of deleting the city, 5 against the proposal and 2 ballot papers being invalid.

8 Mar 2019 Groundbreaking construction hub launched to build future workforce News

The City of Liverpool College has been awarded £500,000 by the Government’s Construction Skills Fund to create Liverpool’s first on-site ‘Construction Hub’, which will bridge the gap between skills training and employment in the construction industry.

The college will be working in partnership with Liverpool Waters, Peel Land and Property’s £5 billion waterfront development scheme, to bring the hub to the currently disused Collingwood Dock.

The Liverpool Waters project includes the development of numerous residential, commercial and leisure facilities across five distinct neighbourhoods, starting at Princes Dock and travelling north to Northern Docks.

With the creation of 9,000 homes, 315,000 sqm of business space, a Cruise Liner Terminal, an Isle of Man Ferry Terminal and an accompanying hotel, the demand for skilled construction workers in Liverpool will be greater than ever.

By working together, The City of Liverpool College and Liverpool Waters will cater to this demand by providing unemployed adults and young people not in education or training (NEET) with work ready skills to enter jobs within Liverpool’s growing construction industry.

Work is now underway to create the portable facility at Collingwood Dock, part of the Liverpool Waters site, which will consist of three separate areas, two of which will be used for teaching space, with the third used for welfare and office space. In addition, the hub will provide the opportunity for college students to receive practical, work ready site-specific training in a real construction site environment.

The Hub will be open to unemployed people and young people who are NEET seeking a job in construction. The project will also provide taster opportunities to people in declining industries and in under-represented groups in the sector to promote construction as a career option.

Learners will have access to skills training to make them work ready for the construction industry. This includes access to site ready training, CSCS cards and ACS Gas Accreditation. The Hub will also provide a gateway to construction qualifications and at all levels and apprenticeships up to degree level.

Employers working with the Hub will have direct access to the college’s extensive work ready and motivated talent pool to support their recruitment needs.

29 Sep 2018 Partnership between Liverpool Waters and The City of Liverpool College Liverpool Waters, the £5 billion regeneration project, and the city region’s biggest college, The City of Liverpool College have announced a partnership that will provide local students with apprenticeship opportunities on the project’s various developments.

Liverpool Waters which is owned and managed by Peel Land and Property, will regenerate over 60 hectares of Liverpool’s dockland, which spans over 2.3 kilometres of waterfront, starting at Princes Dock and heading towards North Liverpool.

With multiple developments already taking shape, including the residential apartment buildings Plaza 1821 and The Lexington at Princes Dock, as well as international developer Romal Capital’s Quay Central at Central Docks, the demand for skilled apprentices is increasing at a rapid rate.

By forming this partnership, Liverpool Waters’ development partners will have access to The City of Liverpool College’s skilled apprentices, who will in turn benefit from working on one of the biggest regeneration projects in Europe.

Professionals gather in Liverpool to discuss waterfront regeneration

Built environment professionals gathered at RIBA North in Liverpool for an event focused on the regeneration of waterfront environments through urban and landscape design.

Part of the Albert Dock InterPro175 lecture series, and organised on its behalf by Landscape Institute and Urban Design Group, speakers were Pete Swift – partner, landscape architect and urban designer at Planit-IE; Ben Palmer – director and landscape architect at Optimised Environments (OPEN); Peter Siöström – programme director at Sustainable Urban Design Master Program, Lund University, Sweden; and Ashwin Karjatkar – part of the design team at Municipality of Gothenburg. Executive director at Turley and visiting professor at Liverpool University, Stephen Gleave, acted as chair for the event.

InterPro175 seeks to celebrate Albert Dock as an exemplary heritage-led regeneration project, acknowledge the range of built environment professionals involved in its continuing success, look to the future and the lessons learnt, and examine a range of comparison projects.

The latest event was the fourth in the series so far, part of Albert Dock 175 – a robust strategy that will assert the Dock’s position as a world-class, leisure destination, counting up to a year of celebration in 2021 – 175 years since the Dock was officially opened by Prince Albert.

Sue Grindrod, chief executive of Gower Street Estates, freeholders of Albert Dock, said: “The InterPro175 lecture series was set up to examine the regeneration of Albert Dock and highlight the significant impact it continues to have on the wider city region and internationally. It remains an important element of Albert Dock 175, never more so now as we enter a new and exciting chapter in the Dock’s life where serious investment will dramatically transform the infrastructure of the Dock making it fit for the visitors of tomorrow.

At the event, Pete Swift gave a fascinating talk focused on Planit-IE’s ambitious masterplan for Albert Dock, which sets out a vision which will revitalise the historic landmark through new public realm proposals and the creation of a new, gateway into the Dock, and improve the overall visitor experience.

Ben Palmer frequently leads OPEN teams, collaborating on a variety of projects including Manchester Museum, the £11m Foster + Partners Quartermile Masterplan in Edinburgh, and most recently acted as the project director on the V&A Museum of Design Dundee public realm. Ben discussed the regeneration of the Dundee waterfront, place-making and the technical challenges they encountered, as well as drawing out potential comparisons with the regeneration of Albert Dock.

Peter Siöström shared with the audience his expertise and interest in sustainable environments, and how Albert Dock can learn from other successful waterfront regeneration projects in Scandinavia – namely Western Harbour, Malmo, and North Harbour, Copenhagen.

Ashwin Karjatkar’s is currently working on the largest urban development project in Scandinavia – RiverCity Gothenburg. Ashwin’s presentation explored the redevelopment of Frihamnen, a former working dockland area of Gothenburg, that will become a new city district and a test arena for various design alternatives including ambitious social, environmental and traffic strategies.

Planning granted for Liverpool waterfront super-apartments

Conditional planning permission has been granted for a two-storey rooftop extension to Strand Plaza, the luxury apartment development on Liverpool waterfront.

Councillors at Tuesday’s planning committee voted unanimously to extend the total number of apartments from 123 to 135 with the additional 8 apartments housed in a two-storey rooftop extension, and a further upper ground floor extension on Moor Street providing an additional three apartments. This takes planning permission for Strand Plaza to a total of 135 apartments.

The existing concrete parapet will be replaced with a ninth storey, increasing the building’s height by 1.8 metres. This will consist of six apartments, each with two bedrooms.

A further lightweight storey will be constructed to form the tenth floor, which will house two luxury penthouses, dubbed “super-apartments”, each with outdoor terraces, and a square footage of 2153Ft2 and 2203Ft2 respectively. One of the penthouses has already been bought for £1.25m.

This top level will be set back from the current edges of the building to avoid overlooking or overshadowing nearby properties, affording privacy to both residents and neighbours. It was decided in the planning meeting that this “would not have a significantly greater impact on the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage site, the Castle Street Conservation Area, or the Grade II* listed Albion House.”

With an estimated Gross Development Value (GDV) of £28 million, Strand Plaza will be comprised of luxury studios alongside one and two-bedroom apartments, and will encompass views of the famous Three Graces: the Liver Building, the Port of Liverpool Building and the Cunard Building.

Primesite Developments, the Liverpool-based company behind Strand Plaza, expect building to be completed in Summer 2018. The development is one of the most sought-after in the city with half of the apartments already sold ahead of completion.

Bobbie Johnson, sales director at Primesite Developments, commented: “This latest planning decision is great news not only for Strand Plaza itself, but also for Liverpool waterfront. The UNESCO site is iconic, yet the eyesore building has stood empty for years – we’re proud to be transforming it into some of the highest quality apartments in Liverpool. It is particularly challenging to develop sites of enormous significance, but when done sensitively and considerately, it becomes an asset to the surroundings.”

He adds: “We believe that Liverpool is entering the next phase of luxury homes for the area, spurred on by the progression of these first super-apartments in the City. Just as important however are the first-time buyers with equally high standards and expectations. Strand Plaza provides for these also, with studios from £99,000. It is a new era for the quality of residential properties and we aim to exceed the high expectations of future residents, showcase the best views of the city, and most importantly turn a literal waste of space into something that brings huge investment and boosts regeneration in our hometown.”

Primesite purchased the disused former Ministry of Defence building in January 2017, with works rapidly taking place over the year. The ground floor show apartment and reception were recently completed and are open for public viewing by appointment.

Strand Plaza is in close proximity to many of the city’s amenities and attractions, including Liverpool One (0.2 miles) Albert Dock (0.3 miles), Baltic Triangle (0.4 miles) as well as easily accessible transport links in and out of the City Centre. Conditional planning permission was granted at Liverpool City Council’s Planning committee on Tuesday 19th December 2017.

5 Sep 2017 Major Conference on Dementia-inclusive Design

A landmark national conference in Liverpool will explore how the design of buildings, places and spaces can exclude people with dementia.

As well as affecting the memory, dementia causes problems with how colours, patterns and textures appear so that people with the condition can have difficulties making sense of their surroundings. Better design can help make the environment less frightening and dangerous.

Doing Dementia Design will promote solutions to remove barriers to living well with dementia. The two day conference starting on Thursday 14th September 2017 is taking place at Liverpool John Moores University’s John Lennon Art and Design Building.

Architects, developers, housing and care professionals, academics, students and local government officers will hear from a wide range of expert speakers and they will work together to produce ideas and proposals for improvements to the way places are designed.

Topics include research into home design, creating dementia-friendly neighbourhoods, government and council policies, latest technological innovations and implications for the arts and business.

People living with dementia and their family carers will play an important part in the programme, relating their own experiences of hazardous and dangerous situations.

A spokesman for organisers Liverpool Dementia Action Alliance said “This conference will be a challenge and an opportunity for everyone involved in decisions about the design of the built environment and how they affect people living with dementia. We hope it will play a major part in bringing about real change.”

Liverpool John Moores University are hosting and supporting the event, at the John Lennon Art and Design Building on 14/15 September.

Other sponsors include Alzheimer’s Society, Kier Construction and Mersey Care NHS Trust.

‘Final warning’: Liverpool’s UNESCO status at risk over docks scheme

This is the final warning shot,” says Henrietta Billings, director of the campaign group Save Britain’s Heritage, reports The Guardian. She’s talking about Liverpool and the oversized buildings that are threatening to do a lot more damage to the city than just clog up its waterfront. “Losing world heritage status because of crass planning decisions would be an international embarrassment, as well as a hugely costly mistake.”

Henrietta Billings wants the city planners of Liverpool to heed the warnings of UNESCO who have threatened to remove the city from its coveted list of world heritage sites unless it reconsiders the regeneration plans for its historic docks.

In it strongest warning to date, the international watchdog has announced that this could happen as early as 2018. If the site is struck off, it will only be the second such deletion in UNESCO’s history.

The Liverpool Waters Development is singled out as the main culprit.

Billings identifies a trio of buildings as the principal “crass planning decision”. The Guardian’s architecture critic, Oliver Wainwright, describes them as “resembling a row of gaudy crystal ornaments”.

The developers, Peel Group, advise that Shanghai was the model – notably the skyscrapers of Pudong. They were also inspired by Vancouver and Hong Kong.

Tim Groom Architects receives planning for two apartment schemes in Baltic Triangle and Ropewalks, Liverpool

On 28 March 2017 Manchester-based architecture practice, Tim Groom Architects received planning approval from Liverpool City Council for two, separate residential schemes for property developer Iliad Group – New Bird Street and St Michaels II – located in The Baltic Triangle and Ropewalks areas of Liverpool respectively.

New Bird Street is a 156 apartment development. The design draws from the historical industrial use of the Baltic Triangle area and the many mills that occupied it.

New Bird Street Liverpool buildings:

The building looks to restore the urban edge to the surrounding streets and sets up a perimeter block with an internal courtyard. The pitched roof form incorporated into the design is a distinctive element within the area both historically and now, through the modern industrial sheds of the Baltic Creative Units. The dense massing is broken down through a series of larger carvings creating external terraces and deep balconies.

The ground floor will be commercial space, specifically aimed at creative industries which looks to relate to the nearby Baltic Creative. The units will form a relationship with the internal courtyard creating a vibrant space for residents and commercial occupiers alike.

St Michaels II is the second phase of the St Michaels development and will act as an opening link from Bold Street, through the Ropewalks and ultimately to the Baltic Triangle and historic waterfront.

St Michaels II Liverpool development:

Comprising 120 apartments, the predominant material in St Michaels II is brick, which is synonymous with the Baltic Triangle. Significant details such as the entrance foyer will be accentuated with bronze aluminium, while the brickwork will comprise of two tones, with a warm buff/grey to the majority of the building and a darker grey/blue brick forming a plinth element to the lower portion of the blocks.

Tim Groom, Tim Groom Architects said: “The two schemes follow previous projects delivered by us for Iliad Group in the Baltic Triangle area. We’ve drawn upon the warehouse typography found within The Baltic Triangle and careful consideration has been given to the materiality of each scheme with particular attention being paid to detailed design and refined craftsmanship, building on the ethos of Iliad Group to provide high quality developments.”

ich hab dir nie gesagt, wie es für mich war, als du gestorben bist. Als ich es erfahren hab konnte mein Gehirn die Information nicht verarbeiten, nicht aufnehmen. Ich wusste nicht, was es heißt, wenn jemand stirbt. Und ich wusste nicht, dass ich dich jemals verlieren würde. Zu oft hatten wir darüber geredet, wie wir uns wieder sehen, wenn wir beide herausgefunden haben, was wir im Leben nicht wollen. Zu oft, hab ich mich gefragt was du machst und wie weit du wohl kommst. Vielleicht wärst du nicht ASAP geworden, wie wir es uns immer vorgestellt hatten in den Nächten im Zelt und den Nachmittagen im Bett von Joeys Schwester.

Erst hast du über mich gerappt.

Ich erinnere mich noch, an den ersten Tag, an dem du Morgens, in der Schule zu mir kamst und sagtest: Joey und ich, wir haben gestern gerappt. Du hast es mir erzählt wie ein kleines, aufgeregtes Kind, was grade zum ersten mal Riesenrad gefahren ist. Erst war es irgendwie nur ein Witz. So nach dem Motto; ich bin immerhin schwarz, alle schwarzen Kids müssen irgendwann mal rappen. Aber eigentlich bin ich zu schlau dafür. Eigentlich bin ich in einer Indie Band mit meinen beiden besten Freunden aus der Middle School. Eigentlich bin ich nicht dieser schwarze Junge im Basketball Jearsy und der Snapback. Eigentlich gehe ich auf eine Privatschule. Eigentlich trage ich Hosenträger und Kordhosen, färbe mir die haare blond und weine am Ende von „Of Mice and Men“. - Oder dachtest du doch, du müsstest das sein, was dein Schicksal immer versucht hat aus dir zu machen?

- Eigentlich weil mein Papa abgehauen ist bevor ich alleine aufs Klo gehen konnte. Eigentlich weil meine Mama erst 16 war als sie mich bekommen hat. Und jetzt muss sie 40 Stunden die Woche an einer Bar stehen und sich von Männern anfassen lassen, damit du später mal aufs Community College gehen kannst. Könntest. Gekonnt hättest. Du hättest gekonnt weil obwohl du das schwarze Kind ohne Dad, mit Teenie Mom ohne High School Abschluss warst, nicht das Bild warst, was das Schicksal aus dir gemalt hat. Du warst der Physik Nerd, du hast mir mit Fingerfarben den Pferdekopfnebel auf Leinwand gemalt. Du hast mir bei gebracht wie man Musik macht. Du hast mir meine erste Ukulele geschenkt, mein erstes Skateboard. Dustyn, du bist alles, jede einzelne Sache, die ich jemals sein wollte. Du bist nicht der Junge von der Straße im schwarzen Kaputzenpulli der noch am Tatort stirbt. Noch am Tatort. Die Kugel Springt von deinem Schlüsselbein direkt durch deine Rippen und durchfährt deine Lunge. Du erstickst an deinem eigenen Blut, weil du dich im Zimmer von deiner weißen Freundin versteckt hast. Weil du ASAP sein wolltest? Weil du an diesem einen Tag mit Joey diese Idee hattest, dann Soundoff gewonnen hast und auf einmal ganz Seattle wusste wer du bist? - Nein. Du wärst auch gestorben als Community College Student, mitten im Physik Studium, mit den besten Aussichten und einer stolzen Mom. Dec 31, 2020: Ein Lob auf die Handwerker und alle Talente: gelernt ist gelernt!

In Kenia wollen alle, die einen einigermassen guten Abschluss in der Sekundarschule machen an eine Universität. Dort lernen sie dann alle Anwälte, Ärzte, Procurement Officers etc. zu werden aber am Schluss haben die wenigstens einen Beruf. Und vor allem kehren sie nicht in ihre Heimat zurück, wo ihre Skills extrem gefragt wären.

Es sind also meistens die, die weder Geld noch Gelegenheit hatten für eine Universitätsausbildung, die dann einen handwerklichen Job wählen. Oft sind es auch einfach Jobs, die vom Vater an den Sohn weitergegeben werden. Ich war vor Jahren schon sehr erstaunt über die Fähigkeiten von Ravasco, dem Baumeister. Dass es ihm gelungen ist, das riesige Projekt des Community Centers umzusetzen hat mich damals schon fasziniert. Und es ist nicht einfach nur umgesetzt, sondern es sind auch noch schöne Verzierungen an den Fenstern eingebaut worden, was es uns jetzt erlaubt das Haus noch gar nicht gemalt zu haben sondern einfach mit ein paar weissen Rahmen verschönert zu haben.

Es gibt auch andere Beispiele: der Maler, den wir für die meisten Arbeiten anstellen ist – gelinde gesagt – ein Schluderi. Er selber sieht immer aus wie ein getupfter Hund nachdem er gemalt hat aber er tropft die Farbe auch überall hin, ist nicht vorsichtig und die Details lassen zu wünschen übrig. Aber einen Maler zu kriegen ist in unserer Gegend schwierig und so kommt der Mann, denn sie „Arm einer Schlange“ nennen (das gibt dann immer ein Gelächter, weil ja Schlangen gar keine Arme haben – muss wohl eine kenianische Art von Humor sein) immer wieder zum Zug. In meinem Büro habe ich mir schon überlegt, dass ich selber nochmals nachstreiche aber das vielleicht erst nächstes Jahr. Zudem hat er in meinem Büro genau umgekehrt gemalt: ich wollte die Wände weiss und die Decke hellblau und jetzt ist es halt umgekehrt – aber alle haben Freude daran und zum Glück kann ich auch auf hellblau projizieren mit dem Beamer.

Dann gibt es auch noch Handwerker, die zwar an und für sich gut sind aber für gewisse Dinge einfach nicht gut genug. Das war beim Automechaniker aus Kilifi so. Er hat uns letztes Jahr zwar mitten in der Nacht auf der Strasse abgeholt und das Auto schnell geflickt – aber eben zu schnell oder nicht gut genug und so musste dann nachgebessert werden, was im Endeffekt eine teure Übung war. Der in Malindi ist wiederum supertoll, aber jedes Mal nach Malindi (87 Kilometer) zu fahren ist eine Tagesreise, auch wenn das nach einer kurzen Distanz klingt. Aber die Erfahrung die er hat ist unschlagbar und auch seine Preise sind sehr vernünftig.

Wir mussten grad kürzlich wieder hin, weil sich das eine Fenster nicht mehr schliessen liess und das Auto einen komischen Klopfton machte. Zudem muss man bei diesem “Traktor” unbedingt den Service regelmässig machen damit das Auto lange hält, denn die Torturen der Ganze Strassen sind nicht unwesentlich.

Dieses Jahr haben mich mehrere Mechaniker bzw. Berufsgattungen wieder verblüfft. Da ist der Schreiner: ein alter Mann (oder mindestens sieht er so aus), der mit seiner ganzen Crew eingefahren ist um die Decke in meinem Büro und im IT Raum zu machen. Die Offerte war unglaublich gut: KSH 20‘000 (ca. CHF 200) für mein Büro und KSH 15‘000 (ca. CHF 150) für den Computerraum. Da ich mir jetzt wirklich mein Refugium schaffen wollte habe ich zugesagt und dachte mir: diese CHF 200 sind gut investiert für mein Wohlbefinden. Aber was die Handwerker hier wirklich nicht können, das ist eine Offerte unterbreiten. Da müssten sie wohl mal einen KMU Kurs besuchen (oder ich muss für sie einen erfinden…) damit sie lernen Offerten zu erstellen. Der Schreiner hat nämlich schnell gemerkt, dass alleine das Material, das er braucht für die Decken etwa Ksh 28‘000 ausmacht und für ihn noch 7‘000 übrig bleibt. Das wäre ja nicht so schlecht, wenn das eine Raz Faz Übung gewesen wäre, aber sie haben geschlagene 3 ½ Tag dafür gebraucht, denn der Prozess ist sehr aufwändig.

Es müssen zuerst die Holzbalken gelegt werden. Daran werden dann die Panele befestigt. Da es sich bei dem Holz um Hartholz gehandelt hat war es auch sehr tough die Nägel einzuschlagen, nachdem sie gemerkt haben, dass sie dafür Spezialnägel benötigen, was alles wieder verzögert hat. Ich weiss, ich könnte sagen: das ist jetzt wirklich alles euer Problem. Aber wenn ich den alten Mann rumklettern und rumkriechen sehe für diese Arbeit und dann am Abend merke, wie sehr sein Kreuz schmerzt, da kann ich dann doch nicht so herzlos sein. Und obwohl ich fluche und sage, das sei so nicht fair lasse ich mich erweichen und gebe wenigstens noch ein bisschen mehr Geld dazu. Sozusagen Schmerzensgeld – aber sicher keinen angemessenen Lohn.

Genau dieser Schreiner hat sich auch bereit erklärt, die 7 Tische zu zimmern aus dem Holz, das Peter von einem alten Baum gewonnen hat. Alleine schon das Fällen des Baums und das Schneiden und schleifen der Bretter war ziemlich teuer, aber nie so teuer, als wenn man es hätte kaufen müssen. Der Baum ist ein ganz besonderer: er heisst Neem und Neem ist hier bekannt für seine positive Wirkung aller Teile: die Blätter werden für Tee verwendet und es ist schon quasi ein Arzneimittel. Auch in Europa ist Neem in vielen Schönheitsprodukten enthalten. Ich selber hatte eine Nagelcrème von Hauschka, die ich schweineteuer gekauft habe. Der zusätzliche Vorteil von Neem ist, dass die Termiten dieses Holz nicht zerfressen können. Das ist sogar ein Riesenvorteil in dieser Gegend, denn von verschiedenen Viechern hat es hier wirklich eine grosse Auswahl!

Und so macht sich die Truppe auf, die Tische zu zimmern. Weil er anscheinend auch noch andere Aufträge hat entscheidet er sich sogar, mit der ganzen Truppe die ganze Nacht durch zu arbeiten. Am nächsten Tag liegen sie wie tote Fliegen vor der Küche und sind total erschöpft. Die verschiedenen Schleif, Bohr- und Sägegeräte, die wir in den Brockenhäusern der Schweiz erstanden haben kommen zum Einsatz und es wird meterweise Schleifpapier aufgebraucht. Am Schluss machen die Maschinen dann auch schlapp, denn sie waren nicht für einen Dauereinsatz geplant aber ich bin sicher, die kann ein Elektriker wieder zum Leben erwecken.

Aber das Fertigstellen der Tische dauert so lange, dass der Schreiner mit seinem Sohn sogar den ganzen 25. Dezember weiter arbeitet, während wir am Tanzen und Feiern sind direkt vor ihren Augen. Er tut mir leid und ich will gar nicht wissen, für wie wenig Geld er das macht. Ich schiebe auch bei diesem Auftrag noch CHF 100 nach und dafür erhalte

ich dann eine Lobeshymne auf meine Grosszügigkeit und darauf, dass ich dafür im Himmel einen speziellen Platz haben werde! Hauptsache wir haben jetzt 7 Tische, die für das Café vor der Küche eingesetzt werden können. Solange das aber noch nicht so weit ist erhalte ich auf Weihnacht einen Tisch für mein Büro und einer kommt in das vorübergehende College Registration Office.

Der andere Handwerker, der immer wieder erstaunt ist Rawlings. Wir haben ihn kennengelernt, als wir noch vor Peter’s Wahl die Wasserreinigungsanlage von Trunz (ja genau die aus Steinach) vorgeführt haben. Er hat also Erfahrung mit Solar, Elektrizität und ist zusätzlich auch gleich noch ein Sanitärler. Das sind Fähigkeiten, die super zusammengehen. Er hat die ganzen Leiltungen im Community Center gelegt und auch alle Schalter für die Elektrizität und ich kann nur sagen: das funktioniert hervorragend. Jede Steckdose hat Pfuus und aus jedem Hahn fliesst Wasser (sofern es Wasser hat natürlich…) Wir haben ihn jetzt auch engagiert für die Installation der Aqua-Pura Anlage, die wir von einem Verein in der Schweiz gesponsort gekriegt haben. Die Anlage wird Trinkwasser produzieren und wir sind extrem dankbar dafür. Rawlings hat super Ideen um Geld zu sparen in der Installation und er kauft flache anstatt grosse und breite Wasserbehälter und montiert diese in einem Kraftakt im Dachstock des Gebäudes. Es ist dort so eng, ich weiss nicht einmal wie ein Mensch dort oben Platz hat, geschweige denn ein 5000 Liter Tank!Am Schluss funktioniert alles ausser der Pumpe: die ist zu schwach und muss ausgewechselt werden. Nochmals CHF 100.—mehr. Die Beträge läppern sich zusammen und manchmal ist das eine Schwierigkeit beim Spenden sammeln. Man weiss eben nie im Voraus wie teuer etwas kommt. Die Spenderinnen und Spender möchten immer gerne genau wissen, wofür wir das Geld einsetzen und das ist einfach manchmal schwer vorauszusagen und besonders in Corona Zeiten, wo die Preise in die Höhe schnellen. Der einzige Nachteil von Rawlings: er ist teuer und kommt vom Süden Mombasa’s. Aber Kosten-/Nutzen müssen wir auch hier abschätzen können. Und alle, die für Pro Ganze spenden wissen auch, dass wir kein Geld für uns persönlich rausnehmen – ganz im Gegenteil.

So war es auch bei der Küche: wir sind von den Ausgaben von Goshene (der Waisentagesstätte) ausgegangen. Die lagen so zwischen CHF 3000 und CHF 5000. Aber Peter hat durch eine benachbarte Schule jemanden kennengelernt, der aus Nairobi kommt und viel Erfahrung mit Kücheninstallationen hat. Dummerweise sind diese Installationen viel teurer, als einfach nur ein kleiner Ofen. Aber jetzt muss ich sagen: wir haben eine für die hiesigen Verhältnisse supermoderne Küche, die es uns sogar erlauben wird, Brot herzustellen und zu verkaufen und natürlich auch Cakes, die hier sehr beliebt sind. Die Investitionen sind also bestimmt CHF 5‘000 höher geworden für diese Chromstahlinstallation und das Geld ist nicht wirklich vorhanden – also jonglieren wir jetzt mit privatem Geld und hoffen immer noch auf den grossen Sponsor (vielleicht V-Zug, Siemens oder sonst ein grosser Hersteller von Küchengeräten…).

An Weihnachten wurde die grosse Pfanne zum ersten Mal für Pilau eingesetzt und letzte Woche haben wir eine Kuchenback-Challenge begonnen. Ich habe verschiedene Schweizer Cakes gemacht: Rüeblicake, Zitronencake und Bananencake (da wir so viele reife Bananen hatten). Es war ein Riesenfest für die Leute hier, so etwas Feines auszuprobieren. Samuel, der Koch, hat dann seine Variante gemacht, die mir auch gut geschmeckt hat. Etwas einfacher als meine Cakes, aber dafür mit einer schönen Kruste. Und diesen Geschmack kennen sie hier und das ist vollkommen ok so. Was mich erstaunt hat: pro Cake hat er 5 Eier!!! gebraucht. Auch hier müssten wir dann mal eine Vollkostenrechnung machen damit die Ingredienzen und auch ein bisschen Salär bezahlt sind beim Verkauf. Wir sprechen aber gerade von einer grösseren Vermarktung der Brote, die hier für leider nur Ksh 45 (CHF 0.45) verkauft werden können. Aber mit Sekundarschulen und mit der Masse könnte es schon rentabel werden. Ich habe auf jeden Fall grad kürzlich in der hiesigen Tagesschau ein Erfolgsgeschichte von Frauen aus Turkana gesehen die Kuchen und Brot backen und dann auch noch ein Nähatelier aufgemacht haben und die haben jetzt ein richtig gutes Leben!

Samuel wollte jetzt die 2. Stufe zünden und für Sylvester noch bessere Cakes machen: besser = schöner, denn das Rezept bleibt dasselbe. Aber jetzt wird fröhlich Lebensmittelfarbe eingesetzt und das Ganze wird mit einer hässlichen Buttercrème verziert. Für mich eine absolute Katastrophe, denn ich mochte das selber noch nie und die Buttercrème ist ja eigentlich eine Fettcrème und macht für mich null Sinn: ich finde sie fast ungeniessbar und noch schlimmer: total ungesund. Sie trägt meiner Meinung nach überhaupt nicht zur Verbesserung der Geschmacks- geschweige denn Lebensqualität bei. Aber wie kann ich ihnen das sagen: sie präsentieren mir ganz stolz das Resultat. Samuel hat dafür sogar noch seinen Lehrer mitgebracht, der ihm das Handwerk beigebracht hat. Und dann kommt der grösste Stolz: die quasi Hochzeitstorte, die jetzt eine Sylvestertorte geworden ist. Sie hätte eigentlich 3 Stöcke haben sollen aber weil das Gefäss Nummer 3 fast so gross war wie Nr. 2 sieht das Gebilde schon mal etwas schräg aus. Sie mussten sich auch mit Pfannen behelfen, weil in ganz Kilifi keine Backformen vorhanden waren. Das Ganze haben sie dann mit Schokolade überzogen – aber leider hat es nicht ganz ausgereicht für die ganze Torte. Wenn oben nicht Happy New Year stehen würde hätte ich auf eine Halloween Torte getippt aber ich bringe es echt nicht übers Herz, ihnen das zu sagen nachdem sie einen halben Tag daran gewerkelt haben. Und so sage ich blöde Dinge wie: “oh wow – that is really colorful” und “you are very creative”! Die Feedbackrunde muss ich wohl für ein anderes Mal aufsparen… Aber jetzt gilt es Werbung zu machen und daher werden diese Cakes morgen auch an die Besucher des Neujahrsfestes abgegeben als Teaser damit sie alle bestellen. In dieser Gegend ist das Problem, dass zwar alle solche Cakes möchten aber niemand dafür bezahlen kann. Aber die Rechnung muss halt aufgehen. Wir sind zwar ein Hilfswerk aber nicht wenn es um solche Dinge geht.

Im Gegensatz zu ihren Cakes nehme ich alle Zutaten, die ich auch in der Schweiz nehmen würde: Butter, Mandeln etc. Die Mandeln kosten mich ein Vermögen: ein Säckli von 100 g kostet über CHF 5!!! Da müsste ich den Kuchen für etwa CHF 10 verkaufen, was hier natürlich nach Wucher aussehen würde. Ich mache auch ein Experiment, weil wir so viele reife Mangos haben: ich finde ein Rezept mit Mangostücken aber das Resultat kommt nicht besonders gut raus: die Mangos waren zu saftig und die Ästhetik lässt zu wünschen übrig. Es ist eher ein Mango-Pfluder aber trotzdem sehr lecker zum Essen… Aber meine anderen Kreationen finden riesigen Anklang: zusätzlich zu den 3 bekannten Varianten, Zitrone, Rüebli und Banane mache ich auch noch den klassischen Mississippi Cake, da ich noch Schoggistängeli aus der Schweiz übrig habe. Ich bin natürlich auch froh um die Rezepte, die ich von meinen Social Media Freunden erhalten habe und bestimmt noch erhalten werde. Da wir gerade hohen Besuchen vom evtl. nächsten MP und seiner Entourage haben ist meine Fangemeinde exponentiell gestiegen: er werde öfter zu Besuch kommen meint er… Ja so Kuchen sind schon gute Lockvögel für viele Menschen!

Was ich aber aus den übrigen Mangos noch mache ist der absolute Hit und bleibt Insidern vorbehalten: ich habe mal in einer unüberlegten Shopping-Phase eine Glacémaschine gekauft in der Schweiz und gemerkt, dass das Ding für einen 1-Personenhaushalt viel zu gross ist. Vor etwa einem Jahr mit der letzten Palette-Lieferung habe ich sie dann nach Kenia schicken lassen und jetzt hat sie ihren grossen Einsatz: mein Gott – ich übertreibe nicht, aber die Mango-Eiscrème, die ich hier produziere ist einfach himmlisch: vollkommen natürlich mit reifen Mangos und einfach der „Treat of the year“!

Nachdem ich am Fest Müsterli von Kuchen verteilt habe um den Verkauf anzukurbeln kommt hier jetzt sogar das Gefühl auf, dass Barbara alles kann und wenn man das Niveau nicht allzu hoch schraubt kann ich sogar sagen: meine Vielseitigkeit zahlt sich hier in Kenia wirklich mehrfach aus. Vom Strategieplan schreiben, Budget für ein College erstellen zum Computer installieren, über Kochen und Backen und Basteln und Tanzen und Singen – alles, was man lernt kommt irgendwann zum Einsatz! Danke an alle, die mir in meinem Leben das eine oder andere beigebracht haben – hier gibt es dankbare Abnehmer für alle meine Talente!

In diesem Sinn: nutzt eure Talente, baut sie aus und macht einfach das, was euch am meisten Spass macht. Auf ein 2021 mit optimaler Talenterkennung und -nutzung!
