Low-budget films driven by fads were the forte of producer Sam Katzman (Rock Around the Clock, 1956). Pair that with director Fred F. Sears (Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, 1956), who is known for bringing films in on time and under budget. Now add Clay Campbell, makeup artist for The Return of the Vampire (1943); Don Megowan, the on-land Gill-Man in The Creature Walks Among Us (1956); and a cast filled with extraordinary character actors, and you get The Werewolf (1956), a surprisingly good science fiction version of lycanthropy! The Grue-Crew had great fun in their talkabout of this lesser-known werewolf film that preceded I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957).
At the time of this writing, The Werewolf (1956) is available to stream from Tubi and PPV from Amazon and AppleTV. It’s also available on physical media as one of 4 films included in Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam Katzman (4-Disc Standard Special Edition) [Blu-ray] from Arrow Video. The other films included are Creature with the Atom Brain (1955), Zombies of Mora Tau (1957), and The Giant Claw (1957).
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Next in their very flexible schedule – this one chosen by Doc – is The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966)! Yes, the last of the Beach Party movies starring Deborah Walley, Tommy Kirk, and a bit of Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff. Eric von Zipper, anyone?

Billy The Kid Vs Dracula (1966) brings a Transylvanian twist to the rootin' toothin' Vild Vild Vest! #Dractober #Review
Over a quarter of a century before SyFy transformed high concept into low art, prolific Hollywood director was churning out such mash-ups as “Billy The Kid vs Frankenstein’s Daughter” and “Billy The Kid vs Dracula”. In fact, those two would turn out to be the final feature films he directed, capping off a career which began in the silent era and spanned over 250 credited movies.
Dracula (John…

Nightfall **** (1956, Aldo Ray, Brian Keith, Anne Bancroft, James Gregory, Jocelyn Brando, Frank Albertson, Rudy Bond, George Cisar) – Classic Movie Review 5216
Director Jacques Tourneur’s tense, suspenseful and involving 1956 cult classic film noir thriller is too little known. It stars Fifties screen tough guy Aldo Ray, who successfully triumphs over his unusual casting against type as James Vanning, a guiltless victim finding bank heist loot belonging to gangsters.
Falsely accused of both bank robbery and murder, he is being pursued both by the real…

The subgenre of horror-westerns is not often used. In 1966, however, Embassy Pictures released a pair of this mixed breed on a groovy double feature. Joining Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter (1966) is tonight’s feature discussion, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula (1966). Both of these genre mashups are directed by William Beaudine. Once again, Dracula is portrayed by John Carradine (House of Frankenstein, 1944; House of Dracula, 1945) and you might also recognize Chuck Courtney, who plays Billy the Kid, from (Pet Sematary, 1989). From there the cast becomes a who’s who of TV and Film Westerns character actors, putting Jeff in his happy place!
Carradine once said this film was “the worst movie he ever acted in.” The Grue-Crew may have other thoughts. Check it out now and let us know what you think of this bizarre and fun blend of genres.
At the time of this writing, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula is available for streaming from several different sources. The Grue Crew found the best resolution on the Classic Horror Movie Channel and Kanopy, but, among others, it can also be found on Tubi and Plex. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Jeff, is Beyond the Time Barrier (1960), directed by Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934) and starring Robert Clarke (The Hideous Sun Demon, 1958).

Character Actor
George Cisar (July 28, 1912 — June 13, 1979) Actor who performed in more than one hundred roles in two decades as a character actor in film and television, often in prominent Hollywood productions.  He frequently played background parts such as policemen or bartenders.

Mooney, a tough-minded banker on Lucille Ball's second sitcom, The Lucy Show.
Cisar appeared in a 1965 episode of The Cara Williams Show with Cara Williams and portrayed character Donald Hollinger's father in That Girl, the Marlo Thomas sitcom which aired on ABC, and Cyrus Tankersley on CBS's The Andy Griffith Show and its sequel Mayberry, R.F.D.
