How do you know so many things? What do you read or how do you keep informed? Thx
I watch a couple of nightly news shows with my dad and read a few headlines on the AP news website once in a while. That’s mostly it on a day to day basis for news.
There’s also a couple issues relevant to me and my interests and hobbies like transgender healthcare or crypto scams and sometimes I go on Google and search a few key words related to that on the news tab, generally only clicking on trusted news sources and not random websites.
I also at least try to be pretty diligent about fact checking so when I see a claim on social media I usually do a quick google about it and can usually find out if it’s real pretty quickly. It’s a skill I’ve gotten pretty good at over time. I learn a lot from fact checking social media posts and YouTube videos.
The thing that actually initially taught me how to be so efficient at general fact checking is this series of videos from crash course about navigating digital information. I recommend it to people all the time. Taking a couple of hours to engage with this playlist I think is a great investment of your time because it teaches you how to efficiently engage with information in an informed way.
Also for information on certain things I study as a hobby I do in fact read books.
I’ve also learned other things by just engaging with the interests and backgrounds of people I care about. Like in recent years I’ve made a lot of friends from India. That’s made me more interested in Indian cooking and religion and politics. My brother is studying to be a software engineer and knows a lot about technology. I’ve learned a lot about digital privacy and the history of computers from him. I’ve got friends who speak Spanish and family members who speak German and in my efforts to learn their languages I’ve also learned a lot about the cultures that speak those languages. You can learn a whole lot of stuff by engaging with things that are important to the people that are close to you. And if they’ve got a similar attitude they can also learn a lot from you.

Well, I think the situation around the perception of iranian history and greek history in fandom is quite similar.
Let's be honest, for most people there is only Ancient Greece (by which they mean the history of the classical greek city-states + hellenistic period + roman period, we are not particularly touching on the dark ages and bronze age Mycenaean Greece, not to mention earlier times), which they - following the manga/anime canon - separate from modern Greece. And there is modern Greece, which, in general, began its independent existence in the first half of the nineteenth century, when a small piece of territory in the southern Balkans gained independence and was called “Hellas”. At best, they have ottoman rule as a kind of “preparatory period” when the canonical Iraklis grew up, did not understand anything and did not really decide anything. And at the same time, modern Greece is the son of Ancient Greece, who loves to be nostalgic about his cool mother, who did something great there more than two thousand years ago. Cool, yeah.
Likewise, for most people there is "ancient Persia" (before the conquest of the Islamic Caliphate in the 7th and 8th centuries AD) and "modern Iran", which they count from the Islamization of the Iranian plateau. In the manga canon, we have a character called "Persia", who people unthinkingly identify with the Achaemenid state, the Parthian Arsacid state, and the Sassanid state. In fanon, he (“Persia”) actively interacts (at war) with Rome, interacts with China and India in much rarer cases, and the mangaka also mentioned that he has descendants, one of which is “modern” Iran, yes. And, of course, there is an incredible amount of time devoted to the Achaemenid period (but not the greco-persian Wars, which shocked me when researching the fandom). Cool, yeah.
But you know what's surprising? None of this makes any sense.
If we take Greece... no, we take greek culture, we will understand that it has continuously developed, without gaps, from the time of the classical polis until the present moment, BUT, if you really want to find a watershed, then this is late antiquity. Why? Because in late antiquity, the pagan hellenes, living in their separate city-states as citizens, became christian rhomeans, subjects of the vast Eastern Roman Empire (which in fact is still perceived as a Republic). The roman "imperial" identity replaced the greek polis identity - although the greek language still dominated in the East, especially after the Avar conquest of the Balkans, when the Empire lost the latin-speaking provinces. The perception of “hellenic” identity was very complex, it experienced a revival, especially in the 13th century, when the roman/latin identity began to be associated with the germans/italians/franks, enemies of the Eastern Empire, but this is if we are talking about intellectuals - the people considered themselves rhomeans. And guess what? The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 did not change anything! There was no break or fracture! The Church of Constantinople continued to be the guardian of this identity even in the absence of christian imperial power! And the people who started the Greek Revolution in the 19th century did not strive to create a small national state, no, in their eyes ALL of Anatolia and the Balkans were the historical lands of the Eastern Roman Empire, which they considered their country. The fascination with ancient pagan Greece is something that was brought from the West, which despised “Byzantium”.
And if you look at Iran, the real boundary between "ancient" and "modern" history is the conquest of Alexander the Great. Because - this will amaze many - but until the second half of the 19th century in Iran itself they knew nothing about the ancient history of the country! The first historical event preserved in chronicles and art, say, the "Shahnameh" of Ferdowsi, is the conquest of Alexander, which has nothing to do with the real one (I will only say that Alexander is considered a descendant of the iranian royal dynasty there). In Iran, they knew almost nothing about the greco-persian wars, about the Seleucids, about the parthian Arsacids and the roman-parthian wars! The real history in Iranian perception began only with the Sassanids, who were at enmity with “Rum” - but, first of all, not with Western, decrepit Rome, but with Eastern Rome! It was “Byzantium” that was “Rome” for the Iranians and for the entire Middle East until the 19th century, while the Western “latins” were the “franks”. Moreover, I want to note that the complete forgetting of the history of the country before Alexander in Iran began even under the Sassanids - largely because ancient persian was a cuneiform language, and cuneiform was forgotten (as for the iranian epic, its oldest part is eastern iranian in origin, western iranian, persian, it becomes only from the time of Ardashir the First). But the arab conquest and adoption of islam did not have such consequences! And when the revival of iranian culture and the new persian language began in the 9th-10th centuries A.D., it was a revival, albeit rethought, of Sassanian identity.
In short, while it makes sense to separate Ancient Greece from "Byzantium", it makes no sense to separate "Byzantium" from modern Greece. And the history of modern Iran begins with the Sassanids, not Islamization.

Throughout Time & Space - Modern Jewish Languages (19 Shevat)
Everyone has heard of Hebrew, the official language of the Jewish people. With over 9 million speakers and 7 million learners, it is certainly the most important and well-known Jewish language as well. However, it is by no means the only one! Many Jews do know that there are other some Jewish languages besides Hebrew, such as Yiddish and Ladino, but did you know that there are actually dozens of other Jewish languages in 7 different language families that are still spoken to this day!? In this week’s edition of Throughout Time and Space, you will be introduced to the most widely spoken Jewish language from each of these 7 families, and the history and culture behind them.
Afro Asiatic: Hebrew. Well, I did just say that Hebrew is the official language of the Jewish people, and the one with the most speakers by far, so it makes sense that Hebrew would be on the list. The Afro-Asiatic language family contains all of the Semitic languages, such as Hebrew and Arabic, as well as the vast majority of North and Northeast African languages. However, Hebrew is by far the most unique language out of any of them, as it is the only language in all of human history to be brought back from the “dead”, meaning that Hebrew is the only language to ever regain native speakers after having none at all for thousands of years. Of course, it is no coincidence that this has only ever happened to the language of Hashem’s chosen people!
Austronesian: Judeo-Malay. Judeo-Malay is (or, was, as it may have recently gone extinct) the only Judeo language in the Austronesian language family, which includes a huge diversity of languages from Maritime Southeast Asia. It is spoken by Jews in the Northern Malaysian state of Penang, and is very closely related to the Malay language of that same region. All surviving manuscripts in this language exist in the notebook of Rahamim Jacob Cohen, an Iranian Jew, and are currently being kept by the British Library.
Tumblr media
Dravadian: Judeo-Malayalam. Judeo-Malayalam is also the only Judeo language in its language family (the Dravidian family, spoken in southern India and Sri Lanka), and is spoken by the Cochin Jews (the oldest Jewish community in India, perhaps tracing back to the time of King Solomon) in both Israel and Kerala India. Since this language is extremely similar to Malayalam, it is considered by some to be a “dialect” rather than a language, but some argue that there are enough Hebrew loanwords and unique features in Judeo-Malayalam for it to be considered a unique language. Unlike other Judeo languages, Judeo-Malayalam is not written using the Hebrew alphabet. Unfortunately, this Judeo language may not be around for much longer, as the vast majority of its speakers now live in Israel, where they mainly speak Hebrew. Indo-European: Yiddish. Yiddish is perhaps the most well known Jewish language aside from Hebrew, as it was the primary Jewish language in Europe until very recently. However, it is certainly not the only Judeo language in its family. The Indo-European language family also includes the somewhat well known Jewish language of Ladino (also known as Judeo-Spanish), as well as dozens of lesser known languages such as Judeo-Persian (Jidi), Judeo-Portuguese, and Judeo-Italian. Yiddish originated in what is now Germany as a West Germanic dialect, but quickly became a language in its own right. Although many of Yiddish’s speakers were murdered in the holocaust, it is by no means an endangered language. Every year, the number of Yiddish speakers actually increases (it’s currently at about 1 million) due to its use as a primary language in Haredi communities in pretty much every country with Haredim. Many famous Jewish authors, such as Shalom Aleichem, have written in Yiddish.
Tumblr media
Kartvelian: Judeo-Georgian. Judeo-Georgian (called Qivruli in the language itself) is one of two Kartvelian (South Caucasus) Judeo languages, the other being Judeo-Mingrelian which is nearly extinct. However, Judeo-Georgian actually has about 60,000 native speakers! It is spoken by Jews who live in the country of Georgia, a community which has been there for 2,600 years after escaping Babylonian captivity. Although Judeo-Georgian is mutually intelligible with Georgian, it has enough Hebrew loanwords to be considered its own language (a similar situation to Ladino and Spanish, or even Yiddish and German). The language is written using the Hebrew alphabet.
Tumblr media
Turkic: Krymchak. Krymchak is spoken in Crimea in the Krymchak community, which is mostly composed of Jewish immigrants. The language shares a lot of similarities to Crimean Tatar, which is the dominant language of the region. However, Krymchak is considered a language in its own right due to the amount of Hebrew loanwords it contains. In the past, the language was also written using Hebrew letters, but it is now written using Cyrilic (and during the time of the Soviet union was written in a modified Latin alphabet). Although this language once had quite a number of native speakers, it is now nearly extinct, with fewer than 800 speakers in Crimea and a couple thousand worldwide. There are single digit numbers of native speakers.
Tumblr media
Creole: Judeo-Papiamento. Judeo-Papiamento is a Jewish language with its roots in the Portuguese-based creole (creoles are languages that are formed by two or more distinct languages combining and simplifying. Many, including this one, were formed during the colonization of the Americas) language of Papiamento. The language was first spoken by Sephardic Jews in Curacao, which is where it is still most commonly used to this day. Judeo-Papiamento differs from Papiamento as it contains many Hebrew loanwords and is also pronounced slightly differently. Judeo-Papiamento is the only living Jewish creole language and also the only Jewish language with any ties to the Netherlands.
So, that was your first glance at Judeo languages across the world. The fact that Jews speak so many languages in so many different language families all across the world is truly a testament to how long we have been living in exile. However, the fact that many of these languages are now dying is a testament to another form of Jewish resistance. We no longer need to continue speaking languages tainted by our exile, as we have now revived the language of our ancestors for our children to become its native speakers. Normally, it is sad when languages die, but these languages are not dying because their speakers are dying - they are being laid to rest because their speakers are finally returning home to their motherland and mother tongue. Although these languages are fascinating to learn about, Iy”H they will soon be relegated to the history books while the people of Israel live.
Tell me in tags: How many of these languages have you heard of before? How many do you speak? Are you also a Hebrew speaker? Let me know in the tags!
Jew Joke:
What does a kvetcher always have for breakfast?
A (com)plain bagel.

I have no idea whether I sent this ask to you or another person by mistake so I’ll try again, sorry if this ends up a repeat ask. Do you happen to know the cultural inspirations behind the Black Dragon laguz? Thank you!
Nope! Haven't gotten this ask before. The short answer is: Maybe a little bit, however, we are probably better off for not having any firm answers.
The easiest place to start is the names. I've seen a lot of people say that the black dragons have a lot of South Asian/Indian influences in regards to names. For example, Almedha’s name in Japanese is Amrita, which is a Sanskrit name meaning immortality (Almedha seems to be similar to a Spanish name, Almeda, seemingly derived from an Arabic word for "the city"). Rajaion and Kurthnaga seem to have some influence from Indian languages as well. Raja coming from a Sanskrit word and means king or ruler and Naga being a creature in Hindu mythology (Kurth is a Germanic name, but both Kurth and Naga come from prior entries in the series).
However, Dheginsea doesn't seem to have the same influence to his name (a very clever redditor pointed out that his Japanese name, Dheginhansea, seems to be a combination of Degwin, from Gundam, and Hanse, which is Germanic.) If you're curious, Nasir is an Arabic name meaning helper or "one who gives victory," Ena is derived from an Irish Gaelic name meaning ardent or "little fire" while Gareth is a Welsh name meaning "gentle" that is from Arthurian mythology, one of the knights of the round (Gawain was also a knight of the round).
Culturally, however, Goldoa’s isolationism set into place by Dheginsea is more reminiscent of Edo Japan or other nations than India. Also of note, Kurthnaga’s host oriented hospitality speech in Path of Radiance feels very reminiscent of Ancient Greece to me off the top of my head, and as it conflicts with Ike's more guest oriented view of hospitality in the story, by confusing him a little, that could either be a real cultural difference between Goldoa and Crimea, or just Kurthnaga trying to justify his actions. (Of course, more cultures may also match what Kurthnaga said than Ancient Greece. I'm just not as familiar with them.)
As for clothes, as much as the short shorts and mini skirts seen in the Tellius games can relate to historical clothes, Dheginsea, Rajaion, Gareth, and Kurthnaga seem to be more generic European fantasy (tunics, boots, leggings), while Ena's outfit appears to have a far more Eastern Asian influence than the other dragons. We never see what Almedha wore before becoming the dowager queen of Daein, so I don't know if that's the norm.
Architecturally, I have no idea. The only shot we get of Goldoan Architecture is this of the capital city in Radiant Dawn and I have no idea what it may be similar to.
Tumblr media
All this to say that while you can make a case for South Asian/Indian inspiration for the three siblings in the royal dragon family, I'm not comfortable saying that for a fact, especially given Dheginsea's name not having a remotely similar etymology to his children. And, given how the developers of Fire Emblem have handled their depiction of "fantasy Europe," it likely wouldn't have been a 1 to 1 coding for the culture of "fantasy India" if we saw more of it in the game, moreso a very concerning blend of multiple cultures with a medieval European wash on top of it.

Prologue:
Ever since Elisabeth was born, she's known two things were absolutely true. One twin was destined for greatness. The other was destined to be his twin sister. Elias was a dream, or so his admirers would say. If anyone ever wanted to be her friend, even for a moment, it was so they could get a glimpse at her brother. Whilst he was heralded as a hero, Liesel was trapped under layers of pink and powder blue, forced to do all of the real work with their family. She was more a mother to her brother and sibling than their own mother was. Yet, as a people-pleaser by nature, she still sought the approval of her father, even if all she could get from the man was a solemn head nod every once in a while. It wasn't always so terrible, growing up. She had a great deal of fun caring for her younger siblings, getting to know them as they grew older and making little piece of embroidery for their clothes, handkerchiefs, and pillows to commemorate their proudest milestones. Of course, that would never be the case for her twin. While they had their friendly moments, she kept her distance as to not be swallowed up under his shadow. It gave her a great deal of free time to learn new embroidery patterns and even learn to study the stars, discovering the stories they tell and what they say about the future. It was a simple, almost-happy life, or at least that's what she told herself as she faded away into the background. Liesel did not shed a single tear when her father died. Well, maybe a few, but it was only for the lost chances she could have had to prove to him that she was the better choice for queen. She was smarter, kinder, and had a countenance that other nations could find more agreeable. But it didn't stand a chance against the golden boy. With betrothals already set for both her and her first younger brother, it seemed like there would be hell arriving at the doors of the German apartments once they arrived to India.
Chapter 1: Lal Qila
The apartments were abysmal. She was betrothed to someone she didn't much like at all. Was she being punished? Was this meant to be revenge for even suggesting to their father that she could wear the crown? Her patience wore thinner and thinner as the days went by. To her relief, the answers came sooner rather than later; Germany was broke and the only reason their nation stood a chance was because of Japan. Her brother was a joke of a king and it was only proven to her that day. Once a docile, sweet woman, her ambitions grew greater and greater to take the throne from him while he was still vulnerable. The Reckoning was less of a threat and more of an opportunity. The anger had boiled over so much to the point where she paid off what was left in her pockets to her captors to seize the German King in exchange for her and her siblings freedom. The plan was to pretend to negotiate for his release in exchange for abdicating the throne, but something unimaginable happened instead...
After The Reckoning... (tw; murder)
King Elias was dead. Her twin brother was dead and it was her fault. Liesel was beside herself, wailing and weeping for the grave mistake she had made. Thankfully, her shock and guilt was easily mistaken for an inconsolable, loving sister who had just lost her dearest brother. During the tribunal against the Hatzfeld royals, she could hardly get a word out through her tears. Though they were genuine, she had to admit she was quite grateful for them. No one suspected a thing. No one could have ever guessed that she cried day in and day out for months as she blamed herself for Elias's death. She wanted him dethroned, she wanted him to see her succeed past his mistakes. Being queen now wasn't quite the victory she had imagined it would be. Now, a year has passed since that horrifying day. Exonerated of all possible crime, Liesel is now Queen of Germany, by default, and she is determined to wipe out this stain from their family's history by restoring them to their former glory. Her siblings, of course, will need new betrothals that will give them happiness and money. Meanwhile, Liesel still remains betrothed to the same person she despised in Lal Qila... out of pure necessity for funds, of course. Perhaps, one day, she can bring herself to make the march down the aisle without retching at the thought of it. But, for now, she can set her sights on securing other alliances, ushering a new era of peace, and desperately trying to distract herself, and the rest of the world, from the lingering fact that her brother is dead... because of her.
TLDR; Elisabeth (or more commonly known as "Liesel") is like the invisible backbone of the family. Since she was old enough to take on responsibility, she's been the mother figure that her siblings needed in the absence of their real parents. She lived entirely under Elias's shadow, despite trying to people-please her way to the crown. It, obviously, didn't work. Instead, she got betrothed to someone she doesn't like and was shoved into a tiny crappy apartment in Lal Qila (because they were broke oof) and thought that Elias actually hated her. She got pissed and paid off her captors in The Reckoning to grab him so she could "negotiate his release" by abdicating the throne to her. It backfired when he turned up dead. She 100% blames herself and wept her way through the tribunal. Everyone pretty much thought she wasn't a threat and obviously cared about him because she's crying so much. It was all just guilt and shock, really. Now, with the crown on her head a year later, she's desperate to wipe this mistake from her ledger by trying to create peace. But this is a BIIIIG mess to clean up, phew.

More by Accident than Design
Today, we know that Buddha was born in the Himalayas in present-day Nepal, then spent his life wandering through the region of northern India that lies to the south of Nepal. Yet, three hundred years ago, after seven hundred years of Muslim rule, India had all but forgotten about the Buddha. Until, that is, a few eccentric British colonizers and tea estate managers fell under India’s spell and became fascinated by its native languages and culture.
In the course of their Sanskrit studies, they stumbled across the teachings of the Buddha. A British Army officer called Alexander Cunningham famously rediscovered Bodhgaya. Thanks to him, we can now visit the exact spot of the Buddha’s enlightenment.
Throughout the nineteenth century, European interest in the Buddha grew as reports of new discoveries in India became available. The first general historical account of Indian Buddhism, Introduction à l’histoire du Bouddhisme indien, was published in 1844 by French scholar Eugène Burnouf.
The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer famously described Buddhism as the “best of all possible religions” and even Friedrich Nietzsche became interested in Buddhism, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, wrote:
I have visited the holy places of Buddhism in India and was profoundly impressed by them, quite apart from my reading of Buddhist literature. If I were an Indian, I would definitely be a Buddhist. But in the West, we have different presuppositions.
Migration also played a major part in the spread of Buddhism throughout the nineteenth century. In the 1840s, Chinese Buddhists began emigrating to America; in the 1870s they were the first to take Buddhism to Australia. In the 1950s, Vietnamese refugees fled to America where they set up the first Buddhist institutions in the West.
By the time the Tibetans were relocating to India in the 1960s, Buddhism had begun to attract a great deal of attention, thanks in no small part to the hippies, the ‘hippy trail’, weed (ganj), the Beat Generation, the Beatles, transcendental meditation and the Vietnam war.
For centuries, Christian missionaries travelled to the East to spread the gospel and convert the natives. Asians have therefore never had to seek out the Christian teachings. For westerners it was the other way around. I have heard some very touching stories about the higgledy-piggledy routes Buddhism took to the UK, America and Europe – especially about the hippies who followed The Beatles to India, accidentally bumped into Buddhism, tuned into transcendental meditation and took up yoga. But few of those who took an interest in Buddhism at that time were specifically seeking enlightenment and so they did almost no research or fact-checking. All of which made Buddhadharma’s centuries-long journey to the West haphazard, at best.
Yet, in spite of its chaotic introduction, the results of having the Buddhist teachings in Europe, America and Australia have generally been good. The only real drawback is that quite a number of new Buddhists have been left with some quite hard-to-shake misconceptions and deeply rooted habitual patterns.
