GERMS: Nerawareta Machi is a first-person open world, survival-horror adventure game developed by KAJ for the PlayStation in 1999. It's a surreal and strange-looking game, sometimes evoking LSD: Dream Emulator with its uncanny environments and the low poly characters, some of whom have face textures, while others are just blank. The game just recently got an "unfinished, but mostly playable" English translation, and while it apparently isn't 100% finished (the site lists it as version 0.5), it at least seems beatable in this state. There's also a complete Spanish translation.

Hey everyone! This week's Rat King Rec is going in a slightly different direction; we're recommending that you take the time to play the recently released English translation for Germs: Nerawareta Machi.
It's a little bit rough around the edges, but the stilted dialogue adds to the spectacularly creepy vibe of this open world survival horror cult classic PS1 game by developer KAJ.

Germs: Nerawareta Machi (1999)

Germs: Nerawareta Machi
Coming up a year after the PS1 adventure game Mizzurna Falls, Germs: Nerawareta Machi (“The Targeted City”) is an open-world mystery adventure game, though this is one played entirely from the first person perspective, similar to the Kings Field games. You control a newspaper reporter who has returned to their hometown to investigate mysterious occurrences regarding strange mutated creatures. The city is quite large, and you can navigate by walking, driving a car, or taking a bus. Though much of the game consists of exploring, there is some combat, and getting killed will actually turn you into one of the creatures, though a quick trip to the hospital will change you right back into a human. When you kill anyone – mutant, human , or otherwise – you can view their remnant thoughts, which may give some clues on how to proceed.
